BASS- With the rising water temps, the top water bite has finally started. Pop R’s, Buzz Baits, Walking Baits and Wake Baits will all draw explosive strikes from hungry bass. Fish around willow grass, stump fields, boat docks and rip rap. Day break until a couple of hours later will be the best times, however, you can still catch them throughout the day from boat docks. They will charge out from under a dock to smash a slow moving walking bait or popper.

Look for spawning bluegill and herring as well. Lots of fish will key in on this opportunity to grab an easy meal. Soft jerk baits, poppers, spinnerbaits and buzz baits are all great choices. Shallow crankbaits fished around bluegill beds will also draw strikes for you.

Once the morning feed is over, it is time to slow down. Shakey head rigged soft plastics are very hard to beat. Crankbaits that will dive down to 10 feet, spinnerbaits fished in and around the willow grass and Jig & Pig Combos will all catch fish. Rocks and boat docks in the Pamunkey arm fished with plastics or crankbaits are hard to beat.

There are lots of fry guarders out there at this time, if you catch one of these smaller male bass, please be sure to put him right back……..HE IS PROTECTING OUR FUTURE!!!!!!!!!
CRAPPIE-   The crappie have finally finished their spawn and are either headed back to deeper water or they are already in place for the summer. Look for them around the uplake bridge pilings, deep brush and deep boat docks. Small minnows rigged on a slip bobber will be the best way to catch them.

STRIPER-  The striper are now beginning to school up very well and are aggressively chasing baitfish to the top at first light. Broken back redfins, zara spooks and small swimbaits are all catching fish. After the feed is over, look for them to go deep and locate them with your electronics and drop toothache spoons to them.
If casting and jigging is not your thing, the trolling bite will begin to pick up with the rising water temps. Deep diving red fins with a 1/4-1/2oz  bucktail trailer or a Norman DD22 are my baits of choice.
Look for them from 208 to the splits and in front of Dike 1 & Dike 2. Lots of smaller fish in the Dike 3 area, lots of fun to cxatch if you are just looking for some rod action.
The Hybrid Striper (Wiper) are also getting really close to being the legal minimum length of 20 inches to keep. Pound for pound,  these fish are more aggressive and stronger than the striper.
