Buck Tail Johnny’s
Buck Tail Johnny’s is an up and coming lure company based out of the Eastern Shore. Recently, I had the pleasure to do some testing of some of their lures. They offer an all natural fishing lure for the angler, from the beginner to the seasoned veteran. When I say All Natural, I mean they use all natural animal hair, fur, feathers, etc for all lures. This gives each lure a very special and unique appearance, something bass rarely see. They offer Spinnerbaits, buzz baits, jigs, the Buck Tail Wobblerz (Buck Tail Clatter Baits), and soft plastics.
The first bait I had the opportunity to test was their Buzz Bait. The clear blade offers a very unique sound and the natural materials give it a truly different look. The first time out, I made a short stop, just to test out the action and to see how the bait cast and the sound it made. I really liked it, but was sad to see no takers. I then got out for a second trip and the 2nd cast missed a really nice bass. I then proceeded to catch bass after bass, some bass just slurping it down and others really smashing it.
It comes in 3 sizes, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce. You have the option of a single or double blade at an addition $.50 cost. The colors are amazing, with 24 options. In 24 colors, Bluegill, Red Breast Bream, Green Bream, Warmouth, Pumpkinseed, All American, Slime Ball Bass, Charred Tiger, Golden Shiner, June Bug, Red Baron, Red Camo, Goldfish, Sexy Shad, Silver Dollar, Black and Blue, Red and White, Tennessee Shad, Pork and Beans, “31”, Pumpkin Spice, Candy Corn Bream, Pumpkin Patch, and The Witch, you have lots of amazing choices to meet your taste. And they are only $7.50 a piece.
I also tested out the BTJ jigs. They come in 4 sizes, 1/4 ounce, 3/8 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 3/4 ounce and 8 different styles, from Skipping, Ned Rig, Flipping, to Cranky Slow Fall. They are also available in the same 24 colors as the buzz baits. In addition, you may add a living rubber skirt to the jig as well for an additional $.80 per jig. And they are only $5.00 per jig.
I had the opportunity to work the jig into my arsenal as I flipped it to bass that were guarding fry on the bed. Watching the jig as it worked, you could really see how it flared and pulsed in the water. I watched as the bass stared at it as it nested into their bed. And then I watched as 4 bass, opened their mouth and sucked the bait in, only to instantly spit it back out past the bed. It happened so quickly that I could not set the hook. The 5th time was the charm as I saw the bass eat the lure and it stayed for a second to long, and I buried the jig home into the roof of the mouth. I truly loved the action the natural material added to the jig, as did the bass.
