Sufix® line innovations help anglers land more fish, lose less

Fishing line can be the difference between landing and losing a fish of a lifetime. Sufix, a Rapala® Respected Brand, has innovated in all line categories – monofilament, fluorocarbon and braid – to prevent the dreaded one that got away.

In recent years, Sufix has revolutionized fishing line tech, from its release of 832 Advanced Superline and Nanobraid a few years back, to the unveiling last year of Advance Monofilament and Advance Fluorocarbon this year. Familiarize yourself with these innovations to ensure you’re spooling up the line the gives you the best opportunity to put the most fish in the boat, no matter the conditions or your quarry.

Sufix® Advance® Monofilament for Walleyes
For many years, Mille Lacs walleye guide Tony Roach fished reaction baits like Rapala Rippin’ Raps, X-Raps and Shadow Raps on 10-pound-test Sufix 832 Advanced braided line with a one- to two-foot leader of 10- to 12-pound-test Sufix Invisiline 100% Fluorocarbon. But in the last year, he’s “fallen in love with” 10-pound-test Sufix Advance Monofilament – especially when fishing in ultra-clear water.

“If you haven’t fished mono for a while, try the new Advance Mono,” Roach says. “There’s so many good qualities to that line – there’s no memory; there’s no coiling. It fishes more like a braid than a mono. There’s little stretch and you can feel everything with that line.”

Sufix Advance Mono is a durable, low-stretch line that combines HMPE molecules with Hyper Copolymer. The result is superior, long-lasting abrasion resistance that doesn’t make the line stiff and unmanageable.

Angling legend Al Lindner is another recent convert to Sufix Advance Mono, especially for shallow walleyes. And he’s not alone, he says.

“In the walleye world, so many guides and professional anglers I know have swung, full-tilt, back to monofilament, especially in shallow water,” Lindner says. “So they’re really going to get excited about Sufix Advance.”

Additional features of Sufix Advance Mono include enhanced castability, unrivaled knot strength and 50-percent lower stretch and UV absorption than standard monofilament.

“What’s cool about that mono when you’re fishing a jerkbait is you get a rubber-band effect – really bouncing that bait,” Roach says. “So, I go back and forth between Advance Mono and braid-to-fluoro, letting the fish tell me what they want.”

If your preferred angling method relies on spinning gear – as do most walleye tactics – you can count on Sufix Advance to put more fish in the boat, Lindner says. “On spinning gear, fluorocarbon can come off the reel like a slinky,” he explains. “Advance mono has abrasion-resistance like fluoro, but comes off the reel smooth.”

Sufix Advance Mono is available in two colors, clear and low-vis green, and nine strengths, 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 17-, 20- and 25-pound test.

Sufix® Advance® Fluorocarbon for Bass
Bass baits that work best fished on or near the bottom will work even better when fished on Sufix’s new Advance Fluorocarbon, says 2019 Major League Fishing World Championship winner Jacob Wheeler.

The most supple, sensitive and strong fluoro Sufix has ever engineered, Advance Fluoro features a higher density index than traditional nylon lines, a quality that helps anglers feel bottom and bites better. Getting such valuable “intel of what’s going on down there” on the bottom, Wheeler says, “can be the difference of having a bad day or having a great one.”

Wheeler appreciates also that Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon is more invisible underwater than any other fluoro line he’s fished. “Knowing that the fish aren’t seeing it is a huge thing,” he says.

Another benefit of a higher-density line like Advance Fluorocarbon is that it will convey your bait four times faster to the strikezone than will old-school nylon line.

A proprietary Gel Phase Technology process allows Sufix to maximize fluorpolymers to create a 100% fluorocarbon line that so out-performs other fluoro lines that it merits its own category. It’s extremely durable, but also extremely limp, allowing it to spool off your reel well, without line coils.

“I can put it on that spool for months, pull it out of my rod locker, make a cast with it and it comes off of there without those coils,” says Rapala Pro Seth Feider, a Bassmaster Elite Series competitor. “It really clears up some of those headaches you have with fishing straight fluorocarbon on a spinning reel.”

Advance Fluorocarbon does not achieve increased suppleness by sacrificing strength or feel. Wheeler’s confidence in Advance Fluorocarbon includes “knowing that when I pitch into that heavy cover and I hook that big one, I’m going to be able to get it in.”

Sufix® Nanobraid® for Finicky Fish
When fish of any species get finicky or spooky, throw small baits on Sufix Nanobraid. The super-sensitive micro-braid casts a mile, increases hook-up ratios, works well in the wind and doesn’t require a special knot to tie.

“It’s all about throwing small baits and getting them further distances,” Wheeler says.

It’s easier to throw tiny baits on Nanobraid – and feel bites on it – because it’s ridiculously thin. Ten-pound test Nanobraid measures only 3/500th of an inch in diameter; 2-pound test measures a mere 1/1000th of an inch. That makes for less wind resistance, which makes for better bite detection and a better hook-up ratio.

Casting into the wind with a traditional braided line often creates a huge arc that makes it all but impossible to feel your bait and detect bites. But Nanobraid’s much smaller diameter creates much less wind resistance, allowing a much tighter line between your rod tip and your bait. For best results, attach a Nanobraid main line via  uni-to-unit knot to a leader of Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon or Sufix Invisiline 100% Flurocarbon.

Made from 100 percent Dyneema fibers, Nanobraid boasts increased abrasion resistance and superior knot and shock strength. Its uniform, ultra-thin diameter delivers extreme sensitivity and long casts without sacrificing strength. Wide-angle braiding technology gives it a tight weave, resulting in a super strong, silky-smooth line.
