Around this time of the year, anglers are forced to deal with fewer bites due to the weather conditions and season but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to catch them. You simply just have to know what you’re doing. It’s important to find late fall and early winter bass first and then use the proper techniques on them. The most popular and arguably the best technique to catch bass around this time of the year is to jig soft plastic baits. This way you’re able to cast into and fish deeper structures and catch much bigger bass than usual! As the water temperatures drop into the 40s bass will leave the shallow flats and move into the deeper water haunts in order to survive the harsh weather conditions winter has to offer.

One Bait we love to use in these situations is our Fresh Scorpion because it offers a revolutionary new look to soft plastics. This bait not only appears natural to fish but gives them something to become curious about. Each Fresh Scorpion has a unique and exclusive 3-axis tail design that is engineered like no other soft plastic bait. Made from high-grade non-salt plastic to provide superior life-like action that triggers MORE strikes! Scented for complete attraction! Our Fresh Scorpion paired with a Stand-up jig is deadly. The Scorpion will actually sit upright in a defensive stance!

You must be careful when fishing a jig in deep water this time because it has to be cold enough. If you’re too early and the fish are still in the shallows you might not get too many bites. You can pay close attention to the daily weather conditions and determine when it’s a good time to fish the deep waters. A cold night will not cause the bass to move and they will only move once the cold stays for a few days straight. Depending on where you live this could have already started in October or will start sometime going into late December. Bass don’t like to move into deep water hideouts but do it when they have to. The bass will use all sorts of covers that are available for them. This could include weed lines and rocks that can be found in tapering points and creeks.

Another bait we always find success using jigged is our CrayCraws. Our Fresh CrayCraws imitate Crawfish which are a Bass favorite food source. We offer 17 different crucial colors and recently released Natural, Poison, White Lightning, and Ox Blood which are now available! The Fresh CrayCraw delivers a realistic profile that excels in a wide variety of rigging techniques. The unique claw design with a thick tapered outer wall produces a flapping action with every movement of the rod! During the Fall we like to use all of our newest colors listed above along with Green Pumpkin, Black & Blue, and even Smoke Purple Shad. These CrawCrays can be rigged exactly how you’d rig any other craw-styled bait!

It’s best to find a mix of hardcover, weathered rocks, and some type of brush. In most southern reservoirs cold water deep spots can be found at the end of a ditch, creek, or some type of river channel. Most are on the steepest side and will make it to where the bass are covered and protected from the ongoing current. As an angler, you must think about where the bass will be in a few months from now. They’ll be in spawning flats and will work their way into the main lake. We always recommend doing your own research and printing pictures of the spot you’re fishing. This way you’re really able to see the best locations where the bass could be hiding at. Bass really are conditioned and limited by their environment. The footage deep you should be fishing all depends on the topography and the location where you’re trying to fish at.

Our Fresh Beetle delivers ultimate versatility in a soft plastic bait. We’ve recently released Green Pumpkin and Watermelon Red Beetles. Its slim yet wide body design and four claws are engineered to naturally glide and wobble as it moves through the water. The hyper-active swimming claws are designed thin with non-salt plastic to make them come alive with the slightest movement. The Fresh Beetle offers an enticing 4-inch profile and is scented for complete and total attraction! In Fall the best colors to use are Poison, Natural, Black & Blue, Ox Blood, White Lightning, and Green Pumpkin Beetles. You can rig these Beetles as a Jig/ Chatter Trailer, Flippin/ Punching, Texas Rig, Swing Jig, and even a Carolina Rig.

You always want to be prepared and set yourself up for success especially when you’re fishing in cold weather conditions. You never want to waste precious fishing time getting absolutely no bites. If you’re fishing on a boat it’s crucial to maneuver correctly. You’re able to position yourself to cast perfectly into a spot every time and can move to drag your jig along the bottom and through the different covers. When you cast out you always want to wait and let your jig fully sink before trying to move it around. Keep the line constantly running so it’s able to sink all the way to the bottom. You know you’ve reached the bottom once your line is fully slacked and not pulling anymore. It’s important to have a natural-looking jig because the big bulky ones can be unattractive for the bass and lead you to get fewer bites.

We have a wide variety of terminal tackle to choose from. Our favorites for worms are always the Block Head Jig, Shakey Ultrahead, and Mosquito Hooks. The Block Head Jig is on sale and is perfect for ned rigging with its mushroom-style head that matches seamlessly to a wide variety of soft plastic worms and other small baits. The Shakey Ultrahead can permanently secure baits by inserting the pin in the center and screwing the twist lock coil spring for perfect rigging every time! Mosquito Hooks work for drop-shotting and are designed to accommodate a wide range of soft plastics. For the Beetles and CrayCraws we love to use the Stand-Up Jig because it sits your bait up-right in a defensive stance!
