Around this time of the year, anglers are forced to deal with fewer bites due to the weather conditions and season but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to catch them. You simply just have to know what you’re doing. It’s important to find late fall and early winter bass first and then use the proper techniques on them. The most popular and arguably the best technique to catch bass around this time of the year is to jig soft plastic baits. This way you’re able to cast into and fish deeper structures and catch much bigger bass than usual! As the water temperatures drop into the 40s bass will leave the shallow flats and move into the deeper water haunts in order to survive the harsh weather conditions winter has to offer.

You must be careful when fishing a jig in deep water this time because it has to be cold enough. If you’re too early and the fish are still in the shallows you might not get too many bites. You can pay close attention to the daily weather conditions and determine when it’s a good time to fish the deep waters. A cold night will not cause the bass to move and they will only move once the cold stays for a few days straight. Depending on where you live this could have already started in October or will start sometime going into late December. Bass don’t like to move into deep water hideouts but do it when they have to. The bass will use all sorts of covers that are available for them. This could include weed lines and rocks that can be found in tapering points and creeks.

It’s best to find a mix of hardcover, weathered rocks, and some type of brush. In most southern reservoirs cold water deep spots can be found at the end of a ditch, creek, or some type of river channel. Most are on the steepest side and will make it to where the bass are covered and protected from the ongoing current. As an angler, you must think about where the bass will be in a few months from now. They’ll be in spawning flats and will work their way into the main lake. We always recommend doing your own research and printing pictures of the spot you’re fishing. This way you’re really able to see the best locations where the bass could be hiding at. Bass really are conditioned and limited by their environment. The footage deep you should be fishing all depends on the topography and the location where you’re trying to fish at.

You always want to be prepared and set yourself up for success especially when you’re fishing in cold weather conditions. You never want to waste precious fishing time getting absolutely no bites. If you’re fishing on a boat it’s crucial to maneuver correctly. You’re able to position yourself to cast perfectly into a spot every time and can move to drag your jig along the bottom and through the different covers. When you cast out you always want to wait and let your jig fully sink before trying to move it around. Keep the line constantly running so it’s able to sink all the way to the bottom. You know you’ve reached the bottom once your line is fully slacked and not pulling anymore. It’s important to have a natural-looking jig because the big bulky ones can be unattractive for the bass and lead you to get fewer bites.
