Gamakatsu Pro Chris Johnston Claims Dominant Bassmaster Elite Victory at Santee Cooper
Tacoma, WA- Gamakatsu proudly congratulates pro angler Chris Johnston on his commanding victory at the Yokohama Tire Bassmaster Elite at Santee Cooper Lakes, where Johnston showcased one of the most dominant performances of the Bassmaster Elite Series season.
Johnston amassed an incredible four-day total of 113 pounds, 12 ounces to secure his second Bassmaster Elite Series title, his second career Century Belt, and the $100,000 top prize. His winning margin of 19 pounds, 12 ounces underscored just how dialed in he was throughout the event.
For Gamakatsu, the victory highlights the continued success of one of the sport’s premier anglers and reinforces the confidence top professionals place in Gamakatsu terminal tackle when every bite matters.
“Chris put together an absolutely incredible performance this week,” said Gamakatsu Sales Manager Ted Thibault. “To watch him consistently land giant largemouth under intense tournament pressure speaks volumes about his talent and decision-making. We’re proud to have Chris representing Gamakatsu at the highest level of professional bass fishing.”
Johnston’s winning pattern revolved around skipping a Hideup Coike Fullcast beneath shallow main lake docks where resident largemouth were positioned. To rig the bait, Johnston utilized a Gamakatsu treble hook paired with an internally inserted tungsten weight, creating a unique presentation that triggered reaction strikes from some of Santee Cooper’s biggest bass.
Throughout the week, Johnston relied on the hook’s strength and penetration to handle multiple bass exceeding the 5-, 6-, and 7-pound class around heavy dock cover.
One of the tournament’s defining moments came on Championship Sunday when Johnston hooked a massive 7-pound, 7-ounce largemouth around dock pilings, a fish that ultimately helped seal the victory.
“I set the hook and it didn’t move,” Johnston explained. “It started going sideways and it must have gone around four different poles. Somehow, it swam back through all the poles and to the boat.”
Moments like that demonstrate why professional anglers trust Gamakatsu hooks in high pressure situations where landing every fish is critical.
Known across the industry for premium sharpness, strength, and reliability, Gamakatsu hooks continue to play a major role in victories at every level of competitive fishing. Johnston’s latest Elite Series triumph adds another major win to the brand’s long history of success on the tournament trail.
