Catch More Bass in September!

September bass are often more mobile than they were during the peak of summer because changing conditions begin pushing baitfish and predators into new areas. Instead of assuming fish will remain on the same deep structure or cover they used a few weeks earlier, anglers should be prepared to search. Covering water efficiently helps reveal which shorelines, flats, vegetation edges, pockets, and other areas are currently holding active fish. Pay attention to signs of life such as baitfish flickering near the surface, birds feeding, bass chasing prey, or sudden changes in water clarity and vegetation. When you encounter activity, make several casts through the area before deciding whether to continue moving. The goal during the search phase is not necessarily to thoroughly fish every piece of cover, but to identify stretches where bass and forage are concentrated. Once a productive section is found, you can spend more time breaking it down with slower and more precise presentations. Avoid getting locked into one depth or type of cover simply because it produced fish earlier in the summer. September conditions can change quickly, and bass may shift from one productive area to another within a short period of time. Staying mobile until you consistently contact fish can help you locate the most active part of the lake faster. Our Fresh HellaMite is designed to imitate a major aquatic food source, delivering a realistic profile of an insect larva that fish can’t resist. We dropped 6 new “Just the Tip” series HellaMite, including Black & Blue with Blue Tip and Black with Methiolate Tip, along with a Chartreuse Tip in Brown, White, and Green Pumpkin! Each is scented for complete and total attraction underwater, along with being made in the USA by real fishermen. We also just released new high-visibility magenta-red Methiolate HellaMite and restocked Hot Sauce, Alabama, Midnight, and HellaMite Fun Pack, which is loaded with 18 HellaMite baits in all six proven colors, plus it comes with three Owner Block Head Ned Jigs. This bundle pack has everything you need to stay rigged and ready year-round. Grab our newest Lil Bass, Hot Sauce, Glow, 10w30 Synthetic, and Slimer Green HellaMite colors. We’ve also restocked our Green Pumpkin and Smoke Purple HellaMite. The solid body and hyperactive ribbed tail produce a life-like quivering action with every twitch of the rod. Its unique flat underbelly detail enables this bait to be fished as a drop shot, Ned rig, neko rig, and even a small Carolina-rig, making it the ideal bait in any condition year-round. When the water is clear, the fish can see the bait and look like real food, causing strikes. Each cast becomes an opportunity for a nice catch, thanks to the superior performance and versatility of the HellaMite.
Covering water is important for locating September bass, but slowing down becomes valuable once you begin getting bites. A group of active fish often indicates that the surrounding area has the right combination of forage, cover, depth, and water conditions. Instead of immediately continuing down the bank, work nearby targets more carefully to determine whether additional bass are holding there. Worms, craw-styled baits, lizards, beetles, and other soft plastics can be worked slowly around individual pieces of cover. Allow the bait to remain near productive targets long enough for less aggressive fish to react. Some bass may be willing to chase prey while others in the same area prefer to stay close to cover and wait for food to come to them. Switching from a search approach to a slower presentation can help anglers catch fish that would otherwise be missed. Make repeated casts to the most productive pieces of cover instead of assuming every fish will bite on the first presentation. Small changes in casting angle, retrieve speed, or where the bait falls can help trigger bass that were initially hesitant. Thoroughly working a productive area before moving on can often turn a few quick bites into a much better fishing spot.We use our Fresh Scorpion because it closely imitates a crawfish. If you’re quick, you could secure a pack of our new high-visibility magenta-red Methiolate Scorpion or improved Summer Bug! The popular 10w30 Synthetic, Slimer Green, and Barbie Pink Scorpion colors also work wonders. The Fresh Scorpion is a revolutionary new look to soft plastics. Its intricate detailing and texture mimic the nuances of a real crawfish, making it hard for bass to resist. Water clarity always plays a role in color selection but in any season, you can’t miss using colors such as Green Pumpkin Seed, Brown Bark, and the Magneto. This bait not only appears natural to fish but gives them something to become curious about. The Scorpion paired with a stand-up jig is deadly because the jig actually sits the bait upright in a defensive stance. The slight color variations across the bait further enhance its appeal, mimicking the natural color shifts found in live prey. Each Scorpion has a unique and exclusive 3-axis tail design that is engineered like no other soft plastic bait. Our Scorpions are made by anglers from high-grade non-salt plastic to provide superior life-like action that triggers strikes!
Not every bass moves with a large school during the early fall transition. Some fish, including quality bass, may remain positioned around a single dock, stump, laydown, rock, grass clump, or other isolated target. These pieces of cover can act as small feeding stations where bass can hide and ambush passing prey. Even while searching quickly, it can be worthwhile to stop and make several accurate casts around particularly good-looking targets. A compact worm, craw-styled bait, beetle, lizard, or insect larvae imitation can be especially useful for fishing these areas carefully. Place the presentation close to the cover and give it enough time to fall naturally into the strike zone. Consistently checking isolated cover allows anglers to catch individual fish without completely abandoning an efficient search pattern. Focus especially on cover that is close to deeper water, current, shade, or nearby forage because these features can make a single target more productive. It can also help to approach quietly and make your first cast count, since isolated fish may be easier to spook than bass grouped in a larger school. A few extra seconds spent fishing the best individual targets can produce some of the largest bass you encounter. The new FreshBaitz Lizards deliver a realistic profile that excels in both power and finesse techniques. Act fast, we’ve recently just released new Hot Sauce, MidNight, Ghost, and 10w30 Synthetic Lizard designs! The unique forward-facing leg design creates drag that holds it in the strike zone longer or produces wild flapping action with every pull of the rod. Additionally, its slightly ribbed solid body and large head hold your hook in place and provide much better weedless performance making it the ideal bait to use in any condition. Water clarity always plays a super big role in color selection but in any season year-round, you can’t miss when using colors such as Watermelon Red, Black & Blue, or Green Pumpkin. Its flexible tail design ensures added movement, tempting even the most cautious fish. The superior 5.5-inch profile stretches to a whole 7 inches which is perfect for predatory fish including bass year round. Made from long-lasting durable high-grade non-salted plastic for total and maximum attention-grabbing action underwater.
September bass often become heavily focused on whatever prey is most abundant in their environment. The dominant forage can vary considerably between lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and even different sections of the same body of water. Watching the shoreline, vegetation, surface activity, and stomach contents of caught fish can provide clues about what bass are currently eating. Select soft plastics with a size, profile, movement, and color that reasonably resemble the available prey. Small worms, beetles, insect larvae imitations, craw-styled baits, and compact lizards can imitate many of the food sources bass encounter. Natural colors often work well in clear water, while slightly stronger contrast can make a presentation easier for fish to locate in stained conditions. Matching the general appearance of the available forage can make your presentation look like an easy feeding opportunity rather than something unfamiliar. Pay attention to both the size and behavior of the forage, since bass may ignore a presentation that looks noticeably larger or moves differently from what they are currently chasing. If bites are difficult to generate, experimenting with a smaller profile or a more natural color can help better match the available food source. The closer your presentation resembles what bass are already feeding on, the easier it can be to trigger strikes. Our Fresh Beetle delivers ultimate versatility in a soft plastic bait. Its slim yet wide body design and four claws are engineered to naturally glide and wobble as it moves through the water. This design ensures they remain enticingly active longer than conventional baits. Its unique texture also provides a realistic feel, making bass hold on longer once they bite. Water clarity plays a big role in color selection but year-round you can’t miss when using go-to colors such as Chocolate Mint, Ox Blood, or 10w30 Synthetic beetles. The hyper-active swimming claws are designed thin with long-lasting durable non-salt plastic to make them come alive with the slightest movement. The Fresh Beetle offers an enticing 4-inch profile and is scented for complete and total attraction! You can rig these Beetles as a Jig/ Chatter Trailer, Flippin/ Punching, Texas Rig, Swing Jig, and Carolina Rig. Making the beetle beyond perfect in any weather condition year-round!
A large portion of the forage available to bass in September may consist of young-of-the-year prey that hatched earlier in the season. These smaller baitfish and other food sources can create situations where bass become particularly focused on compact meals. Using an oversized presentation around fish feeding on small forage can sometimes reduce the number of bites you receive. Downsizing to smaller worms, beetles, insect larvae imitations, compact craw-styled baits, or shorter lizards can create a better match. Smaller presentations can also be easier for bass to inhale when they are feeding quickly in schools. Keep the overall profile compact while still using tackle strong enough to handle the cover you are fishing. Paying attention to forage size rather than automatically using your normal presentation can make a significant difference during the early fall transition. If bass are following a bait without committing, reducing the size of the presentation can sometimes make it appear more natural and easier to catch. A smaller profile can also be especially effective when fishing pressured water or around schools of small forage. Matching the size of what bass are already feeding on can help turn hesitant fish into aggressive bites.Using a stick-styled worm is the most tried and true ways to catch fish. September often brings the beginning of a gradual movement from deeper summer locations toward shallower feeding areas. Shorter days and slowly changing water temperatures can influence both baitfish movement and bass behavior. Shallow flats, creek arms, vegetation, docks, shoreline cover, and protected pockets can become increasingly productive as forage moves into them. Anglers who continue fishing only their deepest summer locations may overlook bass that have already started transitioning. Look for shallow areas that combine available food with nearby cover or access to slightly deeper water. Soft plastics such as worms, craw-styled baits, lizards, beetles, and insect larvae imitations can be worked around these areas once bass are located. The shallow movement does not happen everywhere at the same time, so let current conditions and fish activity determine how aggressively you make the transition. Areas with healthy vegetation, shade, and nearby depth changes can be especially productive because they give bass both feeding opportunities and easy access to security. If one shallow area appears inactive, continue searching rather than assuming all of the fish are still deep. As more forage shifts toward the bank, shallow patterns can become increasingly consistent.Introducing the Newest 8-Inch MagDingo Worms! These are the ultimate game-changer in bass fishing! Healthy vegetation can remain one of the most productive places to find bass during September. Grass provides shade, oxygen, ambush cover, and habitat for the insects, small fish, and other organisms that make up the bass food chain. The best presentation often depends on how thick the vegetation is and where the bass are positioned within it. Around scattered grass, work soft plastics through openings, along outside edges, and beside isolated clumps where bass can easily ambush prey. When vegetation becomes dense or forms a mat, a compact craw-styled bait, beetle, worm, or other streamlined soft plastic can be presented directly through the cover. Enough weight may be necessary to penetrate thick vegetation and reach fish holding underneath it. Adjusting the presentation to the density and shape of the grass allows anglers to fish vegetation efficiently without overlooking bass buried deeper inside the cover. Pay particular attention to irregular features such as points, holes, inside turns, and transitions between thick and sparse vegetation because these areas can concentrate feeding bass. If the outside edges are not producing, work progressively deeper into the grass to determine whether fish are positioned farther underneath the cover. Let the location of each bite help reveal which part of the vegetation bass prefer so you can focus on similar areas throughout the lake.We have a wide variety of terminal tackle to choose from, but the All Purpose Hooks are built with an extra-wide gap and are made to accommodate a wide range of soft plastics.
