Lowrance® Anglers Claim Top Two Spots in Bassmaster® Elite Rookie of the Year Race
Lowrance Pro Dustin Connell Claims the 2017 Title

[print_link]

Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, announced today that Lowrance Pro Dustin Connell claimed the Bassmaster Rookie of the Year by finishing 24th in points overall with 60 pounds, 13 ounces on Sunday, September 17, 2017. Connell’s closest competition, Lowrance Pro Jamie Hartman finished in 48th place with 41 pounds, 7 ounces. That allowed Connell to win the Rookie of the Year race by the thinnest of margins, 765-764 – the fifth time in the last six years a Lowrance angler has received Bassmaster Elite Rookie of the Year honors.
“When going to new bodies of water, my Lowrance units help me get dialed in quickly and find fish faster,” said Connell. “My Lowrance units helped me have an incredible rookie season on the Bassmaster Elite Series. I used my Lowrance units as much as I used my fishing rods, whether it’s in 3-4 feet or 20 feet of water. First I look for the baitfish, then the bass; and once I see bass on my screen, I throw the bait in and catch them.”
Connell’s first victory as a Bassmaster Elite pro came at the Academy Sports and Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Ross Barnett earlier this year, where he finished with a total weight of 64 pounds, 13 ounces.
“Whether a beginner, long-time professional or an angler starting out on a successful career, Lowrance is proud to be the fishfinder/chartplotter of choice, selected by so many to enhance their time on the water,” said Leif Ottoson, CEO, Navico. “We’d like to congratulate Dustin, Jamie and all of our professional anglers.”

YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE FINALE PRESENTED BY BASS PRO SHOPS SET FOR MISSISSIPPI RIVER

[print_link]

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (Sept. 26, 2017) – YETI FLW College Fishing is headed to the Mississippi River Oct. 7 for the third and final regular-season event in the Central Conference. The tournament, presented by Bass Pro Shops, will feature college fishing teams casting for a $2,000 club scholarship and an invitation to compete in the 2018 College Fishing National Championship.

“The river is low and not as clear as you’d like it be, but the fishing will be good,” said FLW Tour pro Matthew Stefan, of Junction City, Wisconsin, who finished eighth when the Tour visited the Mississippi River in May. “Smallmouth will definitely be a player, but I think a mixed limit will win this event. This time of year you hope to get a couple of good smallmouth in the boat early and then target largemouth the rest of the day.”

Stefan said that unseasonably high water temperatures have affected bass’ fall migration patterns. Normally, he noted, teams could sit in one area and get plenty of bites but this year that may be more difficult to do.

“Water temperatures are in the low 70s which is very unusual,” said Stefan. “Usually largemouth are following shad into backwaters and smallmouths are in wing dams, but a lot of them aren’t – they’re scattered. Guys are going to have to bounce around from spot to spot until they find one that produces more than a few bites.”

Stefan said he expects many teams to reach for topwater baits. He also listed umbrella rigs, swimbaits and jigs as strong bets.

“Smallmouth will be relating to main-river wing dams, sand drops and current seams,” said Stefan. “Largemouth will be mixed in too, but they’ll also be in backwaters where shad are migrating. Deep water, near trees and weeds, make great ambush points and will likely hold fish.”

The Wisconsin veteran went on to predict that a five-bass limit weighing 18 pounds will be needed to win the tournament.

Competitors will take off from the Washington Street Ramp, located at West Washington & North Main in Prairie du Chien, at 7 a.m. CDT Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the ramp beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Bass Anglers For Saltwater Conservation Leads To Victories For Anglers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Bass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation, a grassroots advocacy effort developed by B.A.S.S., achieved a major milestone this month: Since its inception, more than 75,000 advocacy letters have been sent to Congress by anglers nationwide through its website, BassforSalt.com.

Launched in June 2015, anglers have regularly leveraged BassforSalt.com to contact their Congressmen about policy issues affecting the recreational fishing community.

“We want to say thank you to every angler who has expressed their concerns to Congress through BassforSalt.com over the last two years,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “This progress is only possible when you have a base of grassroots anglers consistently reaching out to their legislators. We encourage all recreational anglers to join the effort by sending pre-written letters to their Congressmen on BassforSalt.com. Together, we will protect the sport we love for our children and grandchildren.”

During the past two years, anglers nationwide have sent letters to their representatives in Washington, D.C., through BassforSalt.com in support of the Modern Fish Act, the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the extension of the Gulf of Mexico red snapper season and Everglades restoration, among other sportsmen’s issues.

Recreational fishing advocates have experienced several major victories in recent months. In June, the U.S. Department of Commerce extended the private recreational fishing season for Gulf of Mexico red snapper from a record-low of three days to 42 days. This summer, several recreational fishing leaders were appointed to key fishery management councils, including Phil Dyskow, immediate past president, Yamaha Marine, who was appointed to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council. In addition, the U.S. Senate has held several hearings on recreational fishing issues during which industry leaders have been able to testify about the positive economic impact of the recreational fishing and boating communities.

“Although our 500,000 B.A.S.S. members are primarily interested in bass fishing, we know that many of them also fish in saltwater,” said B.A.S.S. National Conservation Director Gene Gilliland. “More importantly, as an organization of anglers, we need to stand together with our saltwater counterparts to advocate for public access to public fisheries. When any of us loses ground — or water — we all suffer.”

All recreational anglers are encouraged to advocate on recreational fishing issues through BassforSalt.com. It takes less than 30 seconds to send a pre-written letter to legislators through the site.

KENTUCKY LAKE TO HOST T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

KENTUCKY LAKE TO HOST T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

[print_link]

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 26, 2017) – The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) is heading to Kentucky Lake Oct. 5-7 for the first of six BFL Regional Tournaments. The three-day event, presented by Evinrude, will feature the top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers from each of the Hoosier, Illini, Mountain, and Ozark BFL divisions.

The winning boater will receive a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and a check for $20,000, while the winning co-angler will receive a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard. The top six boaters and co-anglers at each regional will advance to one of the longest-running championships in bass fishing – the 2018 BFL All-American, which will be held May 31-June 2 on Cross Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Kentucky Lake last hosted a BFL Regional Tournament in 2016 when Chris Aswegan of Tiffin, Iowa, took top honors with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 47 pounds, 4 ounces. Aswegan targeted bass on a shallow flat 50 miles south of Gilbertsville, and cited a shad-colored Heddon Zara Spook topwater as his most productive bait.

Anglers in this year’s event can expect another excellent weekend of bass fishing. Local fishing reports indicate water temperatures still being found in the low 80s and a strong topwater bite, especially targeting schooling fish near main-lake bars and shallow cover. Throwing spinnerbaits and crankbaits near wood will likely be a good bet. For others, flipping jigs and worms to brush piles will be the deal.

Anglers will take off from Moors Resort & Marina, located at 570 Moors Road in Gilbertsville at 7 a.m. CDT each day. Weigh-ins will be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. each day. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The T-H Marine BFL Regional Tournament on Kentucky Lake is hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2018 All-American will be held on Cross Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana, May 31-June 2 and is hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier City Sports Commission and the Red River Waterway Commission. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 25, 2017) – Casey O’Donnell of Langston, Alabama, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on the Barren River Sunday with a two-day cumulative catch of 10 bass weighing 23 pounds, 15 ounces. O’Donnell pocketed $5,082 for his efforts.

O’Donnell said he spent the majority of the tournament working through one area on the south end of the river.
