RICHMOND, Va. — Thirty years of fishing the James River paid off for Virginia pro Rick Morris, who won the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open No. 2 on Saturday.

The Lake Gaston, Va., angler weighed in a 16-pound, 11-ounce five-bass limit and finished with a three-day total of 43-15 to clinch the pro division title. Morris received the top prize of a $45,000 Skeeter bass boat/Yamaha outboard rig and $6,784 in cash. He also qualified for the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, contingent upon him fishing the Northern Open finale at Douglas Lake in September.

The former Bassmaster Elite Series competitor ran to the Chickahominy River Saturday morning and noticed a “dead low” tide when he got there.

“So, the bite was pretty fast and furious, and I caught a lot of fish early because the water is clean when it is low,” he said.

Morris’ vast experience on the river helped him put together the patterns that produced all three competition days. He caught his fish on a Texas-rigged 6-inch Riverside ring worm (grape and powder blue) and Ditto worm in black and blue, a 3/4-ounce War Eagle spinnerbait and a 1/2-ounce War Eagle jig tipped with a Strike King Rage Craw. He knew bass on the James River feed on blue crabs, so he decided to use blue worms throughout the tournament to mimic the forage.

The worms produced best for Morris early Saturday morning. “I caught a good one of about 3 1/2 pounds and lost a real giant in a brush pile,” he said. “Then the tide started coming back in and the water was getting dirty, so we went to pitching the War Eagle spinnerbait and caught a few more.”

During midday, Morris moved out to the main river and started fishing dock blinds and barges with the War Eagle Jig and Strike King Rage Craw in various colors. Morris said he caught his fish the first two days running about the same spots and fishing with the same lures.

Henrico, Va., angler Jeff Hamilton finished second in the pro division with 42-14. He decided to stick close to home Saturday and fished around the Osborne Landing area.

“I feel real comfortable fishing there so that is what I did,” he said. “I just kind of grinded it out.”

The 40-year-old car salesman caught most of his fish Saturday on a Zoom Trick Worm. He also caught fish throughout the week on a Rapala DT6 crankbait, a Chatterbait and a Rebel Pop-R.

The other Top 5 finishers in the pro division were Shin Fukae, Palestine, Texas, third, 40-14; Garrett Paquette, Canton, Mich., fourth, 39-14; and Greg Dipalma, Millville, N.J., fifth, 39-7.

Jon Jezierski of Troy, Mich., caught only one keeper Saturday, but he still won the co-angler division with 20-5 and earned the grand prize of a $30,000 Triton bass boat/ Mercury outboard rig. The 49-year-old finish carpenter was bolstered by a Day 2 catch that included an 8- 9 largemouth he caught on a shaky head worm while fishing with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike Iaconelli. Jezierski’s big fish earned him the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award on the co-angler side.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 on the boater side went to Rick Shannon of Woodlawn, Tenn., with an 9-3 bass.

Pete Gluszek received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for being the Day 2 leader in the pro division. Jezierski received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 in merchandise for being the Day 2 leader in the co-angler division.

Morris earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $500 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

How To Study A New Lake’s Map To Find Fish – MTB

How To Study A New Lake’s Map To Find Fish

[print_link]

Doing your homework is essential when planning to fish a new body of water.

Research and map study go hand-in-hand when you want to formulate a plan for fishing unfamiliar waters, and most importantly, to find fish.

Before looking at a map of a new body of water, go online and gather as much information as you can about the fishery. Finding out the best patterns for the time you plan on fishing the unfamiliar waters helps you pick out the hot spots when looking at a contour map of the fishery. Website like Fishidy.com have the best resources for this type of research.

Looking at a paper map from a distance helps you quickly determine the largest areas of deep and shallow waters and how a river channel winds through a reservoir. You can also refer to the electronic maps from your boat because these maps are usually more accurate than the paper maps. You can also go online to look at a Google Earth map of a fishery to search for spots on the satellite photo that might be missing on the paper map.

find fish

Reading a topographic map requires the ability to form a mental picture of what lies below the surface of a body of water. You have to visualize that the contour lines represent drop-offs, rock ledges, creek channel bends and other structure.

A good map will show you where the bottom changes from rocks to sand or muck to rocks. Those transition zones hold fish and if you can identify those ahead of time, you are going to be way ahead of the game.

Interpreting contour lines is the most important aspect in the map reading process because it helps you define structure. Tight lines close to the shoreline represent a steep-dropping bank or bluff, while lines bunched in the middle of a lake indicate deep-water structure such as an underwater ridge or channel bend. Tight contour lines also disclose the productive deep bends of river and creek channels that are ideal spots for bass in the summer and winter. Wide bands of contour lines usually signify gradual sloping banks or flats that hold bass in the spring and fall.

With a good map you can isolate coves and bays that have the right water depth for staging prespawn bass by looking at the contour lines and the water depths on those contour lines.

So studying a map helps you find fish and thus spend more time catching and less time searching for bass on unfamiliar waters.

BASS- Largemouth are now in their summer time pattern and are deep. They are holding on brush piles, bridge pilings, rock piles and deep boat docks in 12-30 feet of water. At first light, you may find them schooling and chasing pods of bait fish fry.

After the feed is over and the sun is well above the tree line, it is time to start probing deeper water. Shakey head rigged plastics like the Zoom Trick Worms and Deep Creek Lures six inch floating MT Worm are all great choices. Try to keep your colors natural…….Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Seed, Watermelon Candy and Watermelon Red are my go to colors. I rig these on a 3/16oz SG’s Shakey Head.

Deep Diving crank baits are also catching their fair share of fish. Bill Norman DD22’s and 6XD’s are two of my favorite choices. You want to bump into the cover of a brush pile or make that bait dig into the lake bottom in order to get reaction strikes. My color choices are Chart/Blue, Gizzard Shad, Blue Back Herring and Sexy Shad.

Jig & Pig combinations, Yamamoto Hula Grubs and creature baits like the Double D Bay Bass Bug or Kracken also work very well during the summer months, especially if you venture to the up lake region. Pitch your baits in the willow grass and under boat docks, make sure you put it right up against every pole on the dock, willow grass will also hold fish, in the hot water temps, the grass will hold the coolest water and have the highest concentration of oxygen. Put you baits into open pockets of grass and hop it a few time after it settles to the bottom. Be very careful to watch your line, sometimes these fish will inhale the jig and not move and inch.

STRIPER- With the water warming into the mid to upper 80’s, the striper are actively chasing baitfish at first light and aggressively taking trolling baits after sun up. If you see schooling fish, nothing beats a top water strike! Pop R’s, Zara Spooks and Torpedos all are great choices, but if they are playing volley ball with your bait, it is hard to pass up a Cotton Cordell Broken Back Redfin. Just wake the bait under the surface to create a disturbance they cannot resist!!!!
After the top water feed evaporates, stay on the school with your electronics and drop spoons or blade baits down to them. If trolling is more your speed, Deep Diving Red Fins trailed with a 1/4 or 3/8 bucktail will provide all day action for you. DD22’s and 6XD’s are also great choices, Colors should be Chart/Blue or a Natural Shad for best results.

CRAPPIE- The Specks are a little more challenging at this time of year. They go to deep water and can get finicky. Bridge pilings, deep boat docks and brush piles will all hold fish. Small minnows rigged either on a slip bobber or a jig head will produce the best results.

Gluszek Will Lead Northern Open Field Into Saturday’s Championship Round On The James River

Gluszek Will Lead Northern Open Field Into Saturday’s Championship Round On The James River

[print_link]

RICHMOND, Va. — Armed with a lucky penny, touring pro Pete Gluszek jumped into the lead of the second Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open Friday at the James River.

After having some engine troubles and landing in 37th place with 10-14 Thursday, the Mount Laurel, N.J., pro caught 20-2 Friday and took over the lead with a two-day total of 31 pounds. His Friday catch was the biggest single-day limit of the event so far.

The service crew worked until after dark Thursday to help Gluszek get his motor running again, and his lucky penny kicked in next.

“Before I left to come down here, my little boy Jake gave me a lucky penny,” Gluszek said.

Jake rubbed the penny and told his dad to carry it with him the whole week. “And it’s working,” Gluszek said.

Playing a weather pattern also helped Gluszek.

“I am always looking for the developing pattern,” he said. “In practice, the rain came through, and it changed things on the bay because the bay gets sweltering hot and the fish do a certain thing (in the heat). Then the rain comes (again) and cools things down, and it can scatter the fish.

“But now we are back into heat waves again, and it is grouping them back up for me. So, I caught them way better today than I did yesterday.”

He has also noticed the low tide is getting better for him every day. “I think the tide is going to be better tomorrow for everybody,” he said.

Second place in the pro division is a logjam with three anglers, Garrett Paquette, Matt Madlener and Greg Dipalma all weighing in with 28-11.

The 22-year-old Paquette from Canton, Mich., is a Lake St. Clair guide who missed fishing the right tide on his spots Thursday.

“Today, I went into my prime areas a little earlier and that was really the biggest adjustment,” he said. “After that, I kind of got on a deal that I think not a lot of guys are doing. No one is in my area, and I am fishing with a bait that maybe only five guys in this tournament have.”

During Thursday’s opening round, Madlener traveled by boat from Richmond all the way to the Chickahominy River and back and ran out of gas. As a result, the Lake Villa, Ill., angler failed to complete his five-bass limit.

“I really focused on fishing a lot cleaner (Friday),” he said. “It was tough. I didn’t have a 12-incher by 12 o’clock and then got down to the Chickahominy and the tide was all wrong. But, I got lucky and hit a little stretch and got three quick ones.”

Then he ran back to Richmond with enough fuel to complete his limit.

Dipalma’s main area tapered off throughout the day, so he went to another spot with about an hour left and caught two quality fish to improve his bag. The Millville, N.J., angler said he is fishing “South Jersey style” since the James River fishes similar to his home waters.

“We are used to fishing mud basically, in real shallow creeks — and there is a lot of that here.”

First-day leader Shin Fukae of Palestine, Texas, caught a 12-pound limit today but dropped into fifth place with 28-10.

Catching an 8-9 largemouth while fishing with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Michael Iaconelli helped 49-year-old Jon Jezierski of Troy, Mich., take the lead in the co-angler division with a two-day mark of 19-3.

“Today, I had three keeper bites, and Mike helped me get all three of them into the boat,” Jezierski said.

The finish carpenter said he caught the big bass at around 11 a.m. and later caught a 2-pounder to complete his three-bass limit. His big catch leads the co-angler side of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award.

Leading the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award in the pro division is Rick Shannon of Woodlawn, Tenn., with a 9-3 largemouth.

Friday’s launch will begin at 6 a.m. ET from the Osborne Park and Boat Landing, 9530 Osborne Turnpike in Henrico. The final day weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops at 11550 Lakeridge Parkway in Ashland and will begin at 3:15 p.m.

The event is hosted by Visit Richmond.

6 Frog Fishin’ Tips To Catch You More Bass – MTB – August 4,20177

6 Frog Fishin’ Tips To Catch You More Bass

Frog-style baits have the perfect design for working over weed mats. Unlike lures with exposed hooks that bog down in the slop, the lightweight, weedless frogs smoothly glide over the vegetation.

While it ranks as one of the best topwater lures for fishing in weeds, the frog is another option the pros use for fishing open water and around other cover. Here are six tips on how to go frog fishin’ like the pros.

Skimming Across Weeds

This is the most popular way to fish a frog and probably the most frustrating way as well. Bass blow up on the frog when you skim it across matted vegetation with steady twitches of your rod, but the fish frequently miss the bait. You have a better chance for a solid hook set if you skim the bait over the mat and then let it sit still in the openings of the mat.

Key On Weed Edges

When fishing short patches of mats or lily pads, skim a frog across the weeds and continue to work it in the same fashion once it slides into open water. Constantly twitching your rod when the lure hits open water will cause the frog’s legs to kick and thrust to imitate the real thing.

Try Wood Targets

Lay-downs, overhanging willows and cypress trees are also ideal spots to throw a frog bait.
Rapidly twitching the frog close to wood is similar to the commotion created by a buzz bait. But the buoyant frog has a distinct advantage over the buzzer since you have to keep a buzz bait moving or it will sink, whereas a frog you can stop and let it sit to trigger a strike

Select The Right Head

Use a hollow-body frog with a pointed nose for skimming across thick mats, but switch to a frog with a popper-style head for twitching through sparse weeds or in open water.

Frog Fishin’ Color Options

Select frogs in black or dark hues for fishing in muddy water or sunny days in clear water. The best frog colors in clear or stained water with overcast skies are chartreuse and white.

Choosing The Right Gear

When fishing in thick vegetation, throw a frog on a 7 1/2-foot heavy action rod and baitcast reel filled with 50- to 80-pound braided line. Work a frog in open water with a 7-foot medium-heavy rod and baitcast reel filled with 17-pound monofilament.

Japanese Angler Fukae Leads Tight Race At Bassmaster Open On James River

Japanese Angler Fukae Leads Tight Race At Bassmaster Open On James River

[print_link]

RICHMOND, Va. — Shin Fukae, a Texas angler who is originally from Japan, learned some quick lessons on the James River Thursday as he moved into the lead in the pro division of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open. His five-bass limit weighed 16 pounds, 10 ounces.

Fukae credited his co-angler partner, Andy Semonco of Chester, Va., with helping him figure out how to catch bass on the James. Semonco, who fishes a local tournament series on the river, also did well with a three-bass limit of 7-13 to move into second place on the co-angler side.

Fukae mentioned that he had an “okay” practice a couple of weeks ago. But, when he returned to the river to practice this week, he mainly looked around at spots he fished in past tournaments on the James and stayed out of the areas he pre-fished to prevent burning those fish.

“I couldn’t find a new spot (in practice), so I decided to fish exactly what I fished two weeks ago,” Fukae said.

Fishing the high tide in the morning produced best for Fukae and Semonco. “We caught our fish pretty quick,” Fukae said. The Texas pro was puzzled, though, because he thought he would catch fish better later in the day on the low tide.

Fukae has proven his versatility in catching bass in different types of waters. He won the 2014 Northern Open fishing shallow and deep in August at New York’s Lake Champlain. On Thursday, he made a long run and fished four different lures in 10 spots to catch his fish in the tidal waters of the James.

Lanexa, Va., angler Steve Colgin relied on his experience on the river to move into second place with a 16-5 limit.

“It was just river fishing — hitting and missing,” Colgin said. “I would pick up one bait and throw it for an hour and catch a fish and thought I had something going. Then I would pick up something later on and catch another one and then just do the same thing over.”

The 56-year-old Colgin caught his fish on the high tide early and on the outgoing tide late. The retiree, who works some at Green Top Sporting Goods, said he ran the “whole river” and tried about 40 spots.  “I went way down and then worked my way back up,” he said.

The local angler noticed the fishing has slowed down lately due to a recent hot spell. “The fish were on really good about two or three weeks ago and then it got really hot and they just shut down some,” he said. “They are just not as active and aggressive as they normally are.”

Fukae and two other Japanese anglers made the Top 5 of the pro division. Ken Iyobe of Tokoname-Shi, Japan, is in third place with 16-2, followed by Cameron Smith of Mashpee, Calif., in fourth with 16-1 and Seiji Kato of Shiga, Japan in a tie for fifth with Jake Whitaker of Fairview, N.C. Both anglers have 15-10.

Taking over the lead in the co-angler division was Chad Franklin-Buckey with a three-bass limit that weighed 9-1. Fishing in his first B.A.S.S. event, the 30-year-old merchant marine from Portsmouth, Va., said he caught his fish targeting “anything that had a little shade and had current running with it.”

Iyobe leads the Phoenix Big Bass Award in the pro division with a 7-10 largemouth. Tyler Woolcott of Port Orange, Fla., leads on the co-angler side with a 5-14.

Friday’s launch will begin at 6 a.m. ET from the Osborne Park and Boat Landing, 9530 Osborne Turnpike in Henrico. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 2 p.m.

The event is hosted by Visit Richmond.

America’s Top Amateur Anglers To Converge In Northern Minnesota For College Championship

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Ninety of the best collegiate student/angler teams representing 59 of the nation’s universities will meet for the 2017 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, August 10-12 on Minnesota’s Lake Bemidji.

College anglers can compete in one of five regionals and in a wild card qualifier for the opportunity to advance to the national championship.

After three days of championship competition, the best team will be crowned national champions.

Bemidji State University and Visit Bemidji will join with B.A.S.S. as the host of this prestigious competition.

“Both here at Bemidji State and across the community, people are truly proud and excited to welcome these collegiate anglers,” said Scott Faust, director of communications and marketing for BSU. “It’s an honor to share the quality of our fishing and the beauty of northern Minnesota.”

From there, the Top 4 teams will advance to the College Bracket to be held at an undisclosed location, Aug. 14-16. At that point, team members will fish solo and be pitted against one another in a bracket-style, win-and-advance competition.

The eight anglers will vie for a berth into the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, scheduled for South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, March 16-18.

“Visit Bemidji is excited to partner with B.A.S.S. and Bemidji State University for the 2017 Bassmaster College Series National Championship,” said Susan Goudge, executive director for Visit Bemidji. “The event will be second to none with our university campus being located on the shores of beautiful Lake Bemidji.”

Goudge said the scenic lakes and local amenities provide an ideal venue for the nation’s top college anglers.

“Lake Bemidji and area lakes are naturally connected to multiple waterways that include the Mississippi River,” she said. “Bemidji, First City on the Mississippi, looks forward to welcoming the fishing teams, families and B.A.S.S. staff to our beautiful community. And, we’d like to wish the best of luck to all the young anglers.”

Following the tournament briefing Tuesday night, Yamaha Pro Night will take place when several of the stars on the Bassmaster Elite Series will offer seminars. Pros will include Minnesota native Seth Feider, Dustin Connell, Josh Bertrand, Justin Lucas and 2017 Classic champion and former college champion Jordan Lee.

Lee will also be the keynote speaker during Sponsor Night, which is set to take place Wednesday evening before official competition kicks off Thursday morning.

The 2012 Bassmaster college champion Matt Lee, the older brother of Jordan Lee, said fishing at the college level and winning the national championship helped mold and prepare him for a career as pro angler on the Elite Series.

“I sat there in the briefing before the 2012 college championship began, and I was thinking about how difficult it would be to win that tournament,” Matt said. “But I was ready for it, and it was a dream come true to actually win it. That time really prepared me to make smart decisions on the water, interact with the media and fans and what it meant to be a champion.”

Matt also said finishing college is paramount.

“As much as I wanted to skip out on finishing school and start fishing the Bassmaster Opens working for an Elite invite, earning my degree was critical,” he said. “You never know what life is going to throw your way, and having a degree will lay the groundwork for a successful life regardless if you decide to fish as a pro or not.”

Daily takeoffs for the championship will be at 6 a.m. CT from Paul Bunyan Park, and weigh-ins will occur back at the park each day beginning at 2:30 p.m. However, fans can come out early and enjoy the Bassmaster Outdoors Expo featuring interactive sponsor displays and free giveaways beginning at 1 p.m. All activities are free and open to the public.
