CARTHAGE’S WAGGONER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OZARK DIVISION EVENT ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS

Kansas’ Sloan Earns Co-angler Title

WARSAW, Mo. (June 26, 2017) – Joe Waggoner of Carthage, Missouri, caught a five-bass limit weighing 18 pounds, 15 ounces, Saturday to earn top honors at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Ozark Division tournament on Lake of the Ozarks. For his efforts, Waggoner pocketed $4,672.

“I focused on main-lake and secondary points with brush, from mid-lake down to the lower end,” said Waggoner, who earned his first career-victory as a boater in BFL competition. “I probably hit 12 areas and revisited the ones that were the most productive.”

Waggoner said his primary points were littered with bait after local authorities pulled water to bring the lake level down.

“My Lowrance units helped me see the bait on the points, which gave me more confidence to stop and fish them,” said Waggoner. “I caught almost all of my weight by 8 (a.m.) and after that it died off. They actually stopped pulling water the morning of the tournament, and I think that’s what scattered them.”

Waggoner said he caught his limit on a plum-colored Zoom Ol’ Monster Worm with a ½-ounce Bullet Weights tungsten slip sinker.

“In the afternoon I caught three good ones on points that were across from each other to finish out my day,” said Waggoner. “I guess I just ran the right points at the right time.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Joe Waggoner, Carthage, Mo., five bass, 18-15, $4,672

2nd:         Stan Tucker, Festus, Mo., five bass, 18-11, $2,236

First Look: Buckeye Lures G-Man Ballin’ Out Jig By Walker Smith June 20,2017

First Look: Buckeye Lures G-Man Ballin’ Out Jig

Walker Smith

June 20,2017

This bass fishing jig was designed to be an all-purpose option for anglers all around the country. From what we’ve experienced thus far, it accomplishes just that.

The tricky part of jig fishing is selecting one that’ll work for your preferred style of fishing. There are countless options out there in regards to head shape, weed guards, skirt materials and hooks which can make the purchasing process pretty daunting.

Buckeye Lures teamed up with Gerald Swindle to create the G-Man Ballin’ Out Jig in order to reduce confusion and cover your bases. It’s a roundball jighead that is specifically designed to work in nearly every situation.

I’ve been testing this jig for roughly two months. I cut off every other jig I own and made myself become familiar with its strengths and weaknesses.

Fourth-Year Boater Bests 195-boat Field – Largest in Northern Division History – to Earn Second Career Victory, $93,200

[print_link]

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 24, 2017) – Pro Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, who started the day in third place, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 18 pounds, 9 ounces to jump to the top of the leaderboard and win the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Champlain presented by Power-Pole. Nelson’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 54 pounds, 9 ounces, was enough to earn him the win by a 10-ounce margin and the first place prize package worth $93,200, including a new Ranger Z521C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

Nelson weighed a mixed bag of three largemouth bass and two smallmouth bass on each of the three days of competition and was the only competitor to surpass the 18-pound mark on Saturday. On Thursday, Nelson started off sight-fishing smallmouths and targeting largemouth later in the day. On Friday, he did the opposite, ditching the early smallmouth and heading to his largemouth grounds. Then, with better weather in the afternoon, the Michigan pro culled twice with smallmouth caught off beds. Saturday, Nelson again targeted the largemouth early, before moving to the bedding smallmouth, then back to the largemouth.

“When I was fishing for the smallmouth I threw an (Poor Boy’s) Erie Darter on a stand-up head jig,” said Nelson, who earned his second career FLW Series event – the first coming on Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake in 2013. “For the largemouth I threw a Beaver, the Darter and a Yamamoto Senko. It didn’t matter what color I threw, they were biting pretty much anything. I found a couple of largemouth on beds and they were as aggressive as the smallmouth were.

“The Costa FLW Series events are always extremely tough and a lot of fun,” Nelson went on to say. “I enjoy fishing all over the country and the challenge of figuring each lake out. Lake Champlain fishes pretty similarly to my lakes back home and I knew that I was going to be able to come here and just have fun. I was glad just to be in the top 10, but to come out of here with a win is pretty special.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Champlain were:

1st:          Ron Nelson, Berrien Springs, Mich., 15 bass, 54-9, $93,200

2nd:         Chris Adams, Shrewsbury, Vt., 15 bass, 53-15, $19,600

3rd:         Thomas Lavictoire Jr., W. Rutland, Vt., 15 bass, 52-3, $14,000

4th:         Chris Johnston, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, 15 bass, 52-3, $12,000

5th:         Brett Carnright, Plattsburgh, N.Y., 15 bass, 52-0, $11,000

6th:         Shayne McFarlin, Martin, Ga., 15 bass, 51-14, $9,000

7th:         Neil Farlow, Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada, 15 bass, 51-8, $7,800

8th:         Ryan Latinville, Plattsburgh, N.Y., 15 bass, 51-8, $6,800

9th:         Scott Dobson, Clarkston, Mich., 15 bass, 50-12, $5,800

10th:       Rob Lamoy, Chazy, N.Y., 15 bass, 48-13, $4,400

Kurt Mitchell of Milford, Delaware, caught a bass weighing 5 pounds, 11 ounces Thursday – the biggest of the tournament in the Pro Division. For his catch, Mitchell earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $300.

Daniel Weaver of Macon, Georgia, won the Co-angler Division and a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. Weaver earned his win with a three-day total catch of 15 bass weighing 44 pounds, 1 ounce.

The top 10 co-anglers on Lake Champlain were:

1st:          Daniel Weaver, Macon, Ga., 15 bass, 44-1, $28,100

2nd:         Bill Spence, Saint Albans, Vt., 15 bass, 44-0, $6,000

3rd:         Tom Stark, Angola, Ind., 15 bass, 40-5, $4,800

4th:         Mike Mueller, Berryville, Va., 15 bass, 39-13, $3,900

5th:         Greg Mauldin, Archdale, N.C., 15 bass, 39-9, $3,450

6th:         Gary Haraguchi, Redding, Calif., 15 bass, 39-7, $2,900

7th:         John McBride, Mount Airy, N.C., 15 bass, 38-13, $2,400

8th:         Greg Tesch, Middlebury, Conn., 15 bass, 38-8, $1,950

9th:         Edward Pecore, Plattsburgh, N.Y., 15 bass, 37-13, $1,580

10th:       Tim Saylor, Johnson City, Tenn., 15 bass, 37-10, $1,330

Jason Bezio of Plattsburgh, New York, caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Thursday, a largemouth weighing 4 pounds, 9 ounces, and earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $200.

The Costa FLW Series on Lake Champlain presented by Power-Pole was hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau. Floyd, Gibbons Overcome Adversity To Win Bassmaster High School National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Despite fishing a man short the first competition day, the South Florence High School team of Tommy Floyd Jr. and James Gibbons won the abbreviated Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods at Kentucky Lake.

The South Carolina anglers weighed in a two-day total of 43 pounds, 3 ounces to win the national championship and collect $5,250 in scholarship money from DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Fishing in the championship for their second straight year at Kentucky Lake, Floyd and Gibbons had an idea of what they wanted to do in practice from last year’s experience on the lake. They did well last year fishing shallow, but the high school anglers noticed the shallow bite wasn’t as strong this time. Floyd said he didn’t catch a bass over 3 pounds during practice. “We figured out there were some fish shallow and some deep but the bigger fish were deeper,” he said.

Before the first competition morning, adversity struck the team when Floyd contracted a gastrointestinal infection and taken to the emergency room at the local hospital. The 17-year-old Gibbons had to fish by himself that morning. “He held his place,” Floyd said of his partner.

Gibbons sure did as he caught five-bass limit weighing 20-1 to move the team into a tie for 13th place. The 17-year-old angler keyed on ledges with a green pumpkin 3/4-ounce Go Get Em jig and a green pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw and caught a limit by 8 a.m.

He had no trouble getting bites but he had a few problems getting fish in the boat. “I never could figure out how to net fish at the same time as I was reeling them in,” he said. “I just had to kind of swing them in the boat. I lost a few fish that morning from swinging them in when the jig would come out of their mouths.”

The strong wind and rough water also made it difficult for him to hold on to his spot after catching a fish. “The wind was so bad when I caught a few and had to go back and cull,” he said. “I would drift about 100 to 150 yards off of my spot every time because I didn’t have anybody else to run my trolling motor for me. It was very hard.”

The team got a break when a forecast of severe weather from tropical storm Cindy caused tournament officials to postpone the second day of the championship. “I was actually kind of glad they postponed it,” Floyd said. The off day gave Floyd a chance to recover from his illness and get ready for the final day. Gibbons said he spent his day off shopping at a local tackle store, cleaning the house where they were staying and doing laundry.

With both teammates fishing on the final day, the South Florence High anglers both threw the jig and craw to catch a 23-2 limit and clinch the national title. “We flipped some shallow bushes but most of the bites were deep,” the 18-year-old Floyd said.

Their deep fish were hugging the bottom along ledges 22 to 23 feet deep. Floyd said they had their limit by 7:30 a.m., and he estimated they caught about 40 to 50 keepers throughout the day.

Floyd is a senior so it was his last chance to win the championship while Gibbons, a junior, has one more year of eligibility. They decided to “swing for the fences” on the final day. “We threw as many times as we could and fished as hard as we could and never quit,” Floyd said.

Rounding out the Top 5 of the championship were the Henry County High School team of Shawn Burkhart and Gavin Gordon in second place with 42-15; Logan Milsaps and Spencer Childers of the Pickens Bass Fishing team, third, 42-5; Zachary Featherston and Adrian Murar, Yuba Sutter Fishing Club, fourth, 40-15; and Samuel Vandagriff and Matthew Vandagriff, Warren County Pioneer Anglers, fifth, 40-6.

Winning the $500 scholarship for catching the Big Bass of the championship was Stephen Cross Mathis of Broome High School. Mathis caught a 9-0 largemouth on a black-and-blue 9/16-ounce jig while flipping to a dock in about 8 feet of water at about 1:30 p.m. today.

The tournament included 461 anglers on 231 high school teams from across the nation and Ontario, Canada.

The high school competitors were awarded $22,750 in scholarship funds from B.A.S.S. and its sponsors. Bethel University presented $48,000 in scholarship money to the winners if they choose to attend the school in McKenzie, Tenn.

The local hosts for the event were the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, Henry County Tourism and Bethel University.

Building on the Power of the BioBase Cloud Mapping Platform, New Product Generates Full Inventories of Shallow Water Habitats

C-MAP®, a leading supplier of digital navigation products to the maritime market, in partnership with a global leader in remote sensing services, EOMAP GmbH & Co KG, announced today the launch of EcoSat.

A new semi-automated wetland and coastal habitat mapping product that is part of the BioBase Cloud Mapping Platform, EcoSat uses the unique reflectance properties of vegetation and sea bottoms from high resolution satellite imagery and creates distinct polygon objects with spatial properties like area and perimeter. EcoSat’s power is doubled when combined with its sister product EcoSound which uses sonar and GPS data files to map depth and submerged vegetation. EcoSat complements BioBase’s core functionality of submerged habitat mapping with sonar with new capabilities to inventory habitats in vast nearshore areas of aquatic environments. Aquatic habitat managers across the globe can use EcoSat to quickly assess and monitor changes in wetland complexes, shallow lakes, tidal estuaries and marshes, and benthic habitats. EcoSat will also be an invaluable tool for the assessment and monitoring of invasive aquatic plants. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) is currently using EcoSat and EcoSound to generate full aquatic vegetation inventories in high profile Florida lakes.

“The combination of the latest habitat image classification procedures and the high-performance of the BioBase Cloud environment brings significant benefits to all users that don’t have access to large data processing capacities,” said Marcus Bindel, EOMAP data analyst.

Leveraging the expertise of a team of remote sensing experts at EOMAP, EcoSat rapidly processes raw satellite imagery and creates unique habitat classifications (e.g., polygons in a shapefile). Shapefiles and raw imagery – that are often hundreds of megabytes – are uploaded and processed by BioBase’s powerful cloud-based servers. Shapefiles and imagery are stored in a user’s or organization’s private online account for easy access and sharing. BioBase customers can interact with these detailed EcoSat files simply with any internet-enabled device. Users can also export custom charts of the EcoSat classifications to their Lowrance or Simrad chartplotter and navigate directly to a habitat of interest.

“BioBase is a first-of-its-kind, off-the-shelf cloud solution for organizations and businesses that need full aquatic habitat inventories quickly,” said Greg Konig, head of product, C-MAP. “Prior to BioBase automated mapping technologies, aquatic managers and researchers would spend countless hours at high costs just to produce a map. But not anymore.”

Powerful Tools for finding Fish and Structure

Axiom with RealVision 3D Sonar:

Powerful Tools for finding Fish and Structure

[print_link]

WILSONVILLE, OR (June 21, 2017) – During a recent sea trial for Axiom™ Multifunction Displays with RealVision 3D™ Sonar, Raymarine’s UK-based test boat Raymariner came upon an interesting underwater target. The M/V Margaret Smith was a coal dredger that capsized and sank near Yarmouth, UK in 1978. The wreck is part of the New Forest National Park and has become a popular feature for fishermen and scuba divers alike. Known to locals as “The Maggie”, the ship is now home to a wide array of different fish species. It’s also a great structure for testing and calibrating sonar equipment since it’s a relatively young shipwreck that is well documented in both photo and video.

M/V Margaret Smith, as she appeared shortly before her sinking.  Photo courtesy of calshotdivers.com.

Anglers everywhere know one of the best places to locate fish is around bottom structure. Structure provides shelter and protection to smaller fish, and attracts food that larger fish feed on. Structure can be natural objects like rocks, fallen trees, or underwater ledges. It can also be man-made objects that find their way into the water intentionally or unintentionally like shipwrecks and artificial reefs.

Raymarine’s Axiom RealVision 3D sonar system comes with an awesome array of tools for finding bottom structures and their fish inhabitants.

Sphere Mode enlarges the size of individual 3D sonar returns for better visibility.

3-D sonar technology brings a whole host of benefits to anglers, divers and even cruising boaters too. With a simple swipe of your finger across the screen you can pan and tilt the 3D image to visualize the underwater seascape from any angle. 3D imaging makes it simple to understand the size, depth and distances between objects. The RealVision 3D image is also gyro-stabilized. A sophisticated sensor in the RealVision 3D transducer measures the motion of the boat and automatically counteracts it to produce a stable and accurate sonar image.

RealVision 3D also offers 2 different ways to visualize targets. The default setting is called Sphere Mode, which uses round spheres of uniform size to represent individual returns. Sphere Mode helps make smaller targets (like bait and predators) look larger in the overall 3D presentation. This can be especially helpful when you’re looking for individual fish rather than large clusters, or if you are looking at the display from a distance.

Point Mode (left) provides the highest resolution 3D imagery of underwater objects. CHIRP SideVision (right) provides photo-like details.

RealVision 3D can also render images in Point Mode. Point mode uses tiny pinpoints to show each sonar return in 3D space. While a lone contact will appear small in point mode, larger contacts and underwater structures will appear in very high resolution because the individual points will show the size and shape of these objects with extreme detail.

In either point or sphere mode you can also control how coloring is applied to targets. When set to Depth mode, targets are colored according to their depth in the water, using a rainbow scale (that cycles every 50-feet). In Intensity mode, targets are colored according to the strength of their sonar return. Stronger returns are indicated by brighter colors. RealVision 3D also offers 5 different target color palettes to choose from, along with options for background color and bottom color, too.

Raymariner is Raymarine’s test platform used for on-the-water testing of Sonar, Radar, GPS and much more.

RealVision 3D transducers are all-in-one solutions with 3D, DownVision, SideVision and High CHIRP elements plus a fast-response water temperature sensor. They also contain a solid-state gyro sensor that counteracts vessel motion for improved image clarity.

When hunting for bottom structure, Axiom’s RealVision 3D sonar gives you several other powerful tools too. In addition to 3D sonar, Axiom also has high resolution CHIRP DownVision and CHIRP SideVision sonar built in too. These options provide photo-like images of structures and fish, and allow you to see even more detail. Axiom even has a Conical High CHIRP sonar channel that is optimized for finding fish. You can view these channels individually, or at the same time on your Axiom multifunction display.

With Axiom, finding and visualizing underwater structures and wrecks is easier than ever. That’s something that fishermen, divers and even cruising boaters and explorers will truly enjoy!

Alabama High School Team Grabs Early Lead In Bassmaster High School National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Steven Swann and Logan Henderson picked up where they left off back in April when they won the Costa Bassmaster High School Southern Open.

Swann and Henderson of the Springville (Ala.) Anglers team won the Southern Open with 24 pounds, 1 ounce — setting a record for the heaviest winning weight in a Bassmaster High School tournament — and followed up today with a five-bass limit weighing 23-12 to take over first place in the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods at Kentucky Lake.

The anglers believed the change in the weather from hot and sunny to cloudy and windy today helped their pattern. “We got a lot of little bites in practice, but today it seemed like the bigger ones were all fired up,” Swann said.

Despite the weather change, the team didn’t have to make any adjustments to catch fish. The wind and waves, however, did limit them to fishing only one of the 10 spots they found in practice. “It was rough,” Swann said of the waves. “We both felt like we were going to get seasick.”

Henderson noted they caught their limit by about 7:45 a.m. and had bites in 30- to 45-minute intervals throughout the day. “We caught fish early, and it just seemed like when the wind picked up the baitfish got moving and the bass just started eating,” he said.

The Springville Anglers team is making up for a disappointing finish in last year’s Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship. They weighed in 10 pounds the first day last year and blanked the next day.

The leaders are among 461 anglers from 231 high school teams competing for the national title. The teams qualified for the national championship through a series of state and regional tournaments.

Two high school anglers are teamed in each boat with a coach, who serves as a mentor for the high school anglers and operates the outboard motor.

Henry County High School anglers Shawn Burkhart and Gavin Gordon moved into second place with a 22-11 limit.

“The weather conditions limited us to where we could go,” Burkhart said. “We threw pretty much the same stuff that we threw in practice. We had a really good practice, and it really showed out today.”

They tried some of their best places in the morning and had a limit early — they left to try some other spots where they knew schools of bass started biting later in the day. However those spots failed to produce, so they tried to go back to their early morning areas. When they found those spots were already full of boats, they tried some new places and finished the day culling through about 35 keepers.

Gordon said he and his teammate caught about 25 pounds worth of bass in practice and are confident they will have plenty of places to try if the weather cooperates the next two days.

The Moody Fishing team of Jackson Isbell and Trent Robinson weighed in a 22-7 limit to take over third place. Isbell said they had to move around to different places today because of the weather. “It was perfect conditions in practice for what we were doing but today it wasn’t there,” he said.

Robinson said they caught most of the fish early and late in the day. “We got most of our bites in the morning and then right before we weighed in,” he said.

The rough water and wind apparently worked in favor of some teams as 14 limits of 20 pounds or better were weighed in. Rounding out the Top 5 teams were Reese Jones and Dalton Johnson of the Arkansas Youth Anglers and the Brentwood High School team of Luke Byerly and Bryson Mills, with both teams weighing in 22-1.

The full field of teams will compete again on Friday, but the field will be cut to the Top 12 for the final day of fishing on Saturday. The teams are vying for $70,750 in scholarship money. B.A.S.S. and its sponsors are awarding $22,750 to the competitors, and Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., will be presenting the remaining $48,000 to the winners.

Tournament officials are consulting with National Weather Service authorities to determine whether weather conditions will be suitable for fishing Friday. Thunderstorms with heavy rains were predicted as tropical storm Cindy moves inland. If conditions permit, the prep anglers take off at 5:30 a.m. CT from Paris Landing State Park and return at 1:45 p.m. to weigh in at the same location. The final weigh-in will switch locations to downtown Paris at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Henry County Tourism, Carroll County and Bethel University are hosting the national championship.
