Tungsten Goes Tactical By: Joe Sills May 26, 2017

Joe Crumrine knows the deal with sinkers—they need to be durable, they need to be affordable, and most of all, they need to work. At ICAST 2017, the president of Bullet Weights will debut an all-new tungsten sinker that comes with a tactical twist: a matte black build that’s impervious to wear. It’s called Tactical Tungsten, and it hits the market at a time when alternatives to the age-old lead sinker couldn’t be hotter.“The finish isn’t painted on,” says Crumrine. “It’s a tarnish on the metal that we fuse into the sinker during the pouring process. It can’t chip off. It can’t scratch. That sinker is matte black for life.”Bullet Weights knows that different situations call for different sinkers. “Some fishermen want bright colors at times. Some fishermen want glossy colors, but other times you don’t want to bring as much attention to the weight, and for those times, we’ve created Tactical Tungsten.”

Memorial Day is this Monday, May 29th. Here at Mystery Tackle Box we have been spending the month of May generating awareness for various causes we care about that combine veterans and active military with fishing, two things that we believe go well together.  Causes like Wounded Warriors on the WaterHero’s on The Water and Take a Warrior Fishing are fantastic organizations that are doing their part to provide support to our hero’s.  Check out our Instagram or visit their website’s to learn more.

This week we want to highlight another great cause that combines another thing we love, boxes – Check out HeroBox. HeroBox is an organization that supports deployed, injured, aging and homeless veterans. Their mission is to ensure that every American hero receives the physical and moral support they deserve.

HeroBox Founding Story

HeroBox came from one family’s efforts to support one single hero. Founder Ryan Housley learned the sad truth during his brother’s deployment that many members of our service don’t receive any support from home. Whether it be care packages or friendly reminders from home, he didn’t want any soldiers going unattended to, and developed a web platform to connect the American people with their heroes, online and instantly.

Rather than pack up generic care packages that don’t apply to a specific hero’s needs, HeroBox allows service members to request specific needs and specific wants to make their care packages as tailored as possible. HeroBox.org was launched in May 2008 to support this vision. They now has volunteers in all 50 states who help us support tens of thousands of deployed service members each year. In 2013, they expanded the programs to include injured, aging and homeless veterans.

Team MTB Getting Involved

We spent yesterday afternoon packing up 21 boxes, one for each team member at the MTB home office. These boxes will be shipped directly to a military unit we’ve sponsored.  The boxes, like the Mystery Tackle Box, are jammed packed with a whole bunch of goodies that we hope bring a little bit of joy or comfort to the members of the military that receive them. It’s our small way of saying thank you to the men and women who serve away from their families and the comforts of home.  HeroBox made it easy and fun to organize this event with our whole office. Check out the pictures below:

How You Can Get Involved

There are a ton of ways to support this awesome organization, and the best part is its easy. You can sign up to Sponsor a hero  or Donate directly to Herobox.

HeroBox Facts

  • You can sign up for as little as one month, or for as long as you want.
  • The myHero program is a commitment to send one HeroBox a month to your hero.
  • Your hero will tell you exactly what they want to receive.
  • If your hero has not requested anything, you can send some of the most commonly requested items found here.
  • You should expect to pay between $25-$40 to pack and ship a HeroBox. You are welcome to spend more but do not feel obligated to purchase expensive items.
  • You are sending the HeroBoxes directly to your Hero, not to the HeroBox office.

New incentives for high school anglers

Little Rock, Ark. (May 26, 2017) – The Arkansas Hospitality Association is excited to announce the Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza of Arkansas is set for June 23 – 25, 2017.

With a few words at 6 a.m., June 23, participating fishermen up and down the Arkansas River will cast their lines in hopes of reeling in the top prize in the 2017 Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza of Arkansas.

Raymarine Dragonfly 7-Pro Sonar/GPS fish finder is one of many special youth prizes.

The Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza is the state’s largest amateur fishing tournament, and this year’s guaranteed cash prizes include: $50,000 for the largest fish overall; $10,000 for the largest fish overall in each of the remaining four pools; and place money for overall winners per pool, with $900 for second place, $700 for third and $400 for fourth.

Hourly prize money for first, second and third place will be the top priority after the guaranteed prizes are awarded; however, Montine McNulty, Arkansas Hospitality Association’s Executive Director says, “The hourly amounts will be determined by the number of tournament registrants.”. In addition, if the hourly winners purchased and are wearing a Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza t-shirt and cap, they will receive an extra $100 in bonus money.

LIVETARGET lure kits are one of many special youth prizes.

“All high school age anglers will be eligible to win some serious fishing gear,” says tournament director Jill Thiel. “Our sponsors really stepped up to give high school anglers a chance to not only fish for the $50,000 grand prize and the multiple hourly prizes for big fish, but also the chance to upgrade their gear while they’re at it.”

Thiel says anglers grades 6th – 8th and 9th – 12th will have the chance to win one of multiple Raymarine Dragonfly 7-Pro Sonar/GPS fish finder units, Aqua-Vu Micro-II underwater cameras, Bass X fishing rods from St. Croix Rods, lure prize packs from LIVETARGET lures, BaitCloud fish attractant canisters, and a free Thickburgers every week for a year from Hardees.

Aqua-Vu Micro-II underwater cameras are one of many special youth prizes.

The Simmons Bank Big Bass Bonanza tournament is a popular three-day tournament that spans about 300 miles of the Arkansas River, with pools and official check-in stations at Fort Smith, Dardanelle, Little Rock/North Little Rock, Pine Bluff and the Pendleton Bridge near Dumas. The Big Bass Bonanza is open to all ages, and last year, it attracted amateur anglers from around the country.

The tournament begins Friday, June 23 and runs through Sunday, June 25, with fishing starting each morning at 6. The first weigh-in is at 8 a.m., with subsequent weigh-ins at the top of each hour until 1 p.m. each day.

Entry is $80 per person each day, and the winners will be announced Sunday, June 25, at 4 p.m. at the awards event at the Riverfront RV park pavilion, North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Bigger Displays Highlight Strong Start to 2017 For Lowrance® Elite-Ti Fishfinder Series

Bigger Displays Highlight Strong Start to 2017
For Lowrance® Elite-Ti Fishfinder Series

[print_link]
Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, recently reported that fishing consumer trends are clearly indicating that – as with TVs – “bigger is better” when it comes to selecting a new fishfinder display.
Following a record-setting year in 2016 with the Elite-7 Ti – the top-selling fishfinder/chartplotter display globally – early sales reports for 2017 indicate that the Elite-9 Ti is showing signs of being the new frontrunner – another indicator that fishing consumers are continuing to make room for bigger, brighter and easier-to-view displays.
Designed for anglers looking for one unit to do almost everything, the Elite-Ti is poised to meet the current and future demands of the market. With the amount of proven fishfinder and chartplotter features being packed into a single, affordable display, users are requiring the largest screen available to allow them to easily and effectively view all the most important data at once. And with the easier to use touchscreen, anglers are getting more out of their fishfinders, because the units are easier to learn and use. Whereas 5-inch displays used to be the strongest sellers in terms of volume, recent trends show that 7- and 9-inch displays are the current favorite, and this will likely grow to 12-inch displays in the next two years. The Elite-12 Ti models started shipping to consumers in March of this year.
Including cutting-edge features like an easy-to-use touchscreen interface, Bluetooth® and wireless connectivity, proven Lowrance navigation technology and high-performance sonar – including CHIRP, Broadband Sounder™ and StructureScan® HD with SideScan and DownScan Imaging™ – the Elite-Ti Series displays offer incredible value at an affordable price. CHIRP sonar offers improved fish-target separation and screen clarity, while the StructureScan HD sonar imaging system with exclusive Lowrance® DownScan Imaging delivers photo-like images of fish-holding structure on both sides and directly beneath the boat.
For the ultimate in on-the-water navigation, Elite-Ti displays feature a highly accurate, built-in GPS antenna that displays position on a detailed C-MAP Insight map, with thousands of lakes and rivers and detailed coastal contours to 1,000 feet. Optional chart upgrades include Lake Insight HD by C-MAP, C-MAP MAX-N, Navionics HotMaps® Premium, Navionics+ and Fishing Hotspots® PRO.
Bluetooth and wireless connectivity also provide control of single or dual Power-Pole® shallow water anchor installations, as well as access to the GoFree Link App, which allows anglers to view and control the display from an iPad® or Android® tablet.
With enhanced sonar performance, trolling motor control, built-in- high definition charts, waypoint sharing and advanced charting options, the Elite-Ti Series offers features and a price point that competitors such as the Humminbird HELIX G2N can’t match. The easy-to-use touchscreen is a Lowrance exclusive, as is the TotalScan transducer capable of Broadband, CHIRP sonar, StructureScan HD and DownScan Imaging, all in one unit. The enhanced sonar performance of the Elite-Ti offers better clarity of targets than the Helix G2N and greater sonar range where it counts. Simply put, the Elite-Ti finds fish faster than all the rest. The Elite-Ti Series is also priced $300-500 less than comparable units.
“We are very excited about the reception of the Elite-Ti Series, both by recreational and professional anglers alike,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “This product line hits the sweet spot of hard-hitting features and tremendous value. Our competitors are obviously taking notice, but they just can’t match our advanced technology and value. When you look at a side by side comparison, there really is no other option but Lowrance.”
Protected by the Lowrance Service and Support program, the Elite-5, Elite-7 Ti, Elite-9 Ti and Elite-12 Ti can be purchased from authorized Lowrance dealers and distributors throughout the United States and Canada, and are priced at $599, $799, $849 and $1,849 respectively.
For more information on the Lowrance Elite-Ti product family or the entire Lowrance line of marine electronics, visit www.lowrance.com.
