STURTEVANT, Wis., May 12, 2017 – BRP, a world leader in powersports, announced today Evinrude will be the engine sponsor of John Gillespie’s Waters and Woods television program. The program provides a current news source on local Midwestern fishing. Resource preservation is an important focal point of each show as well as providing tips, techniques and the latest products to help viewers be more successful on their outdoor excursions.

“After many years in this industry, we are very excited to work with Evinrude,” said John Gillespie, host and principal, Waters and Woods. “Our new Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines have incredible torque which gives such a rush and adds a level of excitement to the show. The fuel efficiency makes it a practical matter, as we can stay on the water filming while using less fuel than any other outboard we’ve used. The fact that they also produce the lowest emissions of any engine available, fits right in with the purpose of the show, which is to inform our viewers techniques and products that protect and preserve the environment while they go out and enjoy the beauty of nature. Evinrude is the perfect partner.”

“Environmental protection is important to Evinrude, which is why our engines have up to 75% lower emissions than any combustion outboard available,” said Olivier Pierini, Evinrude director of global marketing and strategic planning. “Waters and Woods’ commitment to conservation and protecting our resources makes our partnership a natural fit. We are happy to support John and his show as he helps his viewers get the most out of their outdoor activities.”

Tennessee Tech Extends Lead At Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional

Tennessee Tech Extends Lead At Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Sam Carris and John Berry of Tennessee Tech University brought 15 pounds, 15 ounces to the scales and maintained their lead with a two-day total weight of 31-7 at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Cherokee Lake Friday.

Although the morning period was tough on the duo, they persevered and caught the biggest five-bass limit of the tournament.

For Carris and Berry, decision making was critical on Friday as they arrived at their first spot of the day only to find several other boats congregated on their offshore smallmouth haven. The teammates only fished around one competing team on Thursday, but a late boat draw prevented them from setting up on their starting spot in a prime position.

“Good decisions made our day,” Berry said. “Unfortunately, there was another boat directly on top of the fish we were casting at.”

With only one bass at 9:30 a.m., the pair made a wise adjustment based on the knowledge of the lake they acquired in practice.

“This is the most we’ve ever practiced for a tournament,” Carris said. “We may not be fishing spots we found in practice, but our local knowledge has helped us bounce around and find a spot without pressure from other anglers.”

The Golden Eagle duo extended their 3-ounce lead to 2 pounds over Garrett Enders and Cody Huff of Bethel University. Enders and Huff will know exactly how the leaders are doing on the final day, as both teams have shared their starting area and are fishing within sight of one another.

“We were able to get more bites than the crowd around us because of our bait selection,” Enders said. “Cody has been throwing a moving bait and getting some key bites, and I’m throwing something a lot of anglers have utilized, but mine is altered just slightly.”

“We’ve been able to bounce around to other areas, but they have been beat up so bad that our best population of fish is where we’ve been starting,” Huff said. “We just need a 4-pounder on Saturday. We caught fish that size in practice, but we haven’t gotten that big bite in the tournament yet.”

Nathan Bell and Cole Sands of Bryan College hold the third place spot and trail by 2-6 heading into the final day. The 2016 College Classic Bracket Champion, John Garrett, and his teammate Brian Pahl of Bethel University are in fourth with 28-15. Rounding out the Top 5 are Lee Mattox and Anderson Aldag of the University of Alabama with 28-0 after two days.

The Top 21 teams advance to Championship Saturday and have already punched their ticket to the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops to be held later this summer.

Tristan Thomas and Ty Johnston of the University of North Georgia were the last team to make the Top 21 with a two-day total weight of 23-7. Jacob Foutz and Jake Lee of Bryan College landed the Bassmaster Big Bass of the event so far — a 4-6 smallmouth.

For leading on the second day of the tournament, Carris and Berry received the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award of $500 in merchandise.

The Top 21 teams will launch from the Cherokee Lake Dam and TVA Boat Ramp at 6:30 a.m. ET. The final weigh-in festivities will move to Carson-Newman University (1645 Russell Ave. Jefferson City, TN 37760) beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The event is hosted by the Economic Development Alliance of Jefferson County, Tenn. and Carson-Newman University.

PH Custom Lures Lowen Dollar Bill Crankbait Review By Jason Sealock May 10,2017

PH Custom Lures Lowen Dollar Bill Crankbait Review

Jason Sealock

May 10,2017

Bill Lowen designed the ultimate small flat side for catching limits in pressured fishing conditions.

Homemade flat sides were a well guarded secret among touring professional bass anglers for decades. But now that the cat’s out of the bag, I’ve had a lot of fun this year with one in particular from PH Custom Lures called the “Lowen’s” Dollar Bill that was designed by bass fishing professional and shallow crankbait guru Bill Lowen.

Lowen is a master at catching bass shallow on a crankbait and he’s done it with an intimate knowledge of actions and retrieves with various crankbaits from wide wobbling balsa square bills to tight running plastic crankbaits and finally got to put his stamp on a limit getting small flat sided balsa bait.

First Look: River2Sea Double Plopper Buzzbait By Walker Smith May 9,2017

First Look: River2Sea Double Plopper Buzzbait

Walker Smith

May 9,2017

This buzzbait is a unique twist on the original Whopper Plopper.

The popularity of the original Whopper Plopper is something that hasn’t been seen in the fishing industry for quite a while. To this day, anglers are catching giant bass with it all over the world. I can remember sitting in a hotel room, filling up my Tackle Warehouse cart when they were first available for purchase. I don’t do that often.

The River2Sea Double Plopper Buzzbait is an interesting spin on the Whopper Plopper and I’ve been testing it a lot over the past few months. Essentially, instead of a single buzzbait blade, it’s designed with two counter-rotating plopper blades on either side. It also floats on the pause, which is a unique feature for this type of topwater lure.

Here’s what I discovered while testing it.

Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles Soar In Bassmaster College Regional

[print_link]

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — In a tough opening round of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on Cherokee Lake, Tennessee Tech University teammates Sam Carris and John Berry weighed 15 pounds, 8 ounces of bass to take an early lead.

The leaders were challenged by two Bethel University bass fishing teams with five-bass limits weighing within ounces of theirs.

Carris and Berry started the action soon after they left takeoff at the Cherokee Lake Dam as they had four bass in the first 45 minutes of competition. After losing a bigger bass early, they rebounded well enough to upgrade their weight throughout the day, making that lost fish seem insignificant by day’s end.

Another pair of college anglers is fishing within sight of Carris’ and Berry’s hot spot, but the leaders were able to work out an agreement they hope will prevent the school of bass from being depleted.

“We had an open line of communication with the other nearby team today and we both agreed to leave the area after catching our limits,” Berry said. “By the looks of it, we both held up that end of the deal and it should work out just fine on Friday.”

This isn’t the Cherokee Lake that Bassmaster Elite Series anglers experienced in February, when it took almost 70 pounds in four days to win. The lake level is 25 feet higher than it was three months ago, and fish-holding cover like brushpiles and rockpiles are at the optimum depth for bass.

As a result, the 160-boat field has ample water to fish.

Tennessee Tech’s success has stemmed from one predominant pattern and lure, which the anglers aren’t ready to divulge.

“We are concentrating on one thing and one thing only,” Berry said. “If we ever switch up, we switch colors, but that’s it.”

With boats shuffling spots and the pressure of qualifying for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, anglers tend to get in a hurry. Berry and Carris aren’t letting anything speed them up and their slow approach has paid off.

“We got an early boat draw and caught a 3-plus pounder on our third cast,” Berry said. “We didn’t get in a hurry and only caught 10 fish or so today. The biggest key was keeping them all alive, because not having a ‘fish-care penalty’ was equally important to our success.”

A 4-ounce penalty, assessed if a bass isn’t alive at weigh-in, is crucial with the second-place team of Evan Owrey and KJ Queen of Bethel University just 3 ounces behind.

With a first-round catch of 15-5, Owrey and Queen headline a strong lineup of teams from Bethel University, which claims three teams in the Top 5 and six in the Top 13 after today’s competition day.

The Bethel duo brought a mixed bag to the scales, which featured three good largemouth and a heavy smallmouth. One of their largemouth took the lead for the Big Bass Award as it registered at 4-4, the only fished over 4 pounds weighed on the first day of competition.

With the high water, Owrey and Queen knew there would be a solid shallow bite, and they were able to capitalize on that. Add in some spotted bass and that smallmouth and you can classify their day as “junk fishing 101.”

“We did a lot of map study and saw photos of what the lake was like when it was low,” Queen said. “Adding 25 feet on top of some cover narrowed down some of our offshore spots, but fishing what looks good really paid off today.”

Close behind them in third place are teammates John Garrett and Brian Pahl of Bethel. Garrett is the reigning College Classic champion and represented the College Series at the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods as well as the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens.

The duo managed second in the 2016 National Championship and are one step closer to qualifying again here this week.

The full field of teams will launch Friday at 6:30 a.m. ET from Cherokee Lake Dam Boat Ramp, and the weigh-in will be held in the same place at 2:30 p.m.

The event is hosted by the Economic Development Alliance of Jefferson County, Tenn. and Carson-Newman University.

Cody Shuffer & Chuck Ward Win Piedmont Bass Classics 115 Team Bass Shootout Results..Jordan Lake..May 6th

Saturday May 6th, 2017 ~ Jordan Lake ~ Farrington Point Wildlife Ramp

[print_link]

Well, the weatherman kinda missed it for the morning checkin and blastoff for our fishing boats with 11 horsepower or less, but the day ended nicely! 20 teams fought the early cold wind and rain and around 10am it got better even though the wind still blew steady at about 10 mph. Jordan had been drawn down to about 220, so it was a little high but good for fishing this time of year. Surface temps ranged from

68 to 73 and air temps topped out at about 69. A right nice day all in all. Cody Shuffler (on left) & Chuck Ward took top honors with 5 bass weighing 17.86 lbs. The also won the
Tournament Within A Tournament (TWT) and caught the big bass for the day (6.43 lbs.) for a winning total of
$1,210 !!

1st..Shuffler on left…

Second Place went to Josh Hooks and T.J. Smith. They caught 5 bass weighing 16.23 lbs. and got $430 for their
work! Jesse Wise, fishing alone, took 3rd place with 15.38 lbs. and took home $275 in cash. 4th Place was won
by Manny Lenau, also fishing alone, with 5 at 14.72 lbs. and he won $175.

52 fish were weighed in for a total of 156 pounds for an average of 3.00 lbs. each. Most of the fish were caught
flipping worm rigs or Creature Bait Jig Combos or casting chatterbaits and swimbaits in anywhere from 2 to 10
feet of water in cove pockets around cover. It was tough fishing due to the weather situation, dropping water
and plenty of regular food for the bass due to the shad spawn. Some bass are still on the bed, so it’s still tough
fishing right now.

I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail. Our next tournament
is Saturday May 13th,  the Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Qualifier #5,  at Falls Lake
out of Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp. Following that will be the Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass
Trail Qualifier #6, Saturday May 20th also at Falls Lake. All the info can be found at this link:
