ALABAMA’S WEIDLER WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHEASTERN DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

ALABAMA’S WEIDLER WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHEASTERN DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

Bessemer Angler Bests 196-boat Field to Earn First Career Victory, $48,200

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. (May 6, 2017) – Alabama angler William Weidler of Bessemer, brought a five-bass limit weighing 22 pounds, 3 ounces to the scale Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division finale on Lake Chickamauga presented by Lowrance. Weidler’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 45 pounds, 2 ounces, was enough to earn him the win by a 1-pound, 7-ounce margin and a check for $48,200.

Normally a three-day event, the tournament was shortened to two days of competition after Thursday, Day One, was canceled due to strong winds and dangerous conditions. The tournament resumed Friday and Saturday with the full field fishing each day. The pro and co-angler winners were determined by the cumulative weight of two days of competition instead of three.

“I think I’m still in shock,” said Weidler, who was fishing in just his third career Costa FLW Series event. “I wasn’t even entered in this tournament and I just decided to get in on Tuesday, this week. To come up here and get the win… I am blown away.”

Weidler said that he made the decision to enter the tournament after a strong 6th place finish in the B.A.S.S. Open event just one week prior.

“After my finish last week, I figured I might just have a chance. I’m a shallow-water fisherman – I caught all of my fish this week swimming a jig in 18 inches of water or less,” Weidler said. “I caught around 35 keepers on Friday and around 30 today. I was fishing transition areas, spawning bays and bluegill beds.”

Weidler said that his most productive area this week was just five minutes from the launch ramp – near the lower end of the island at the mouth of the Hiwassee River. He said that every fish that he caught came on the jig, a black and blue-colored ½-ounce Dirty Jigs No-Jack Swim Jig with an H&H Lures Swamp Frog.

“The frog comes black with white feet, but I dye the feet blue to match the black and blue of the swimjig,” Weidler said.

“The key for me this week was just having patience,” Weidler went on to say. “Around 1 (p.m.) today I didn’t have much weight in the livewell and I started hearing the little voices in my head. But the sun came out and it warmed up, and then some clouds moved in and it got a little overcast. I just knew that they were going to start biting, and they did. I was fishing a bluegill bed and I ended up culling everything in my livewell. It was a magical spot.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Chickamauga were:

1st:          William Weidler, Bessemer, Ala., 10 bass, 45-2, $48,200

2nd:         Barry Wilson, Birmingham, Ala., 10 bass, 43-11, $19,500

3rd:         Brian Merriman, Falkville, Ala., 10 bass, 43-4, $14,000

4th:         Taylor Ashley, Warrior, Ala., 10 bass, 42-12, $12,200

5th:         Brent Butler, Vonore, Tenn., 10 bass, 41-1, $11,000

6th:         Tim Frederick, Leesburg, Fla., 10 bass, 40-14, $9,000

7th:         Joe Thompson, Clayton, Ga., 10 bass, 40-11, $8,100

8th:         Wes Logan, Springville, Ala., 10 bass, 40-2, $6,800

9th:         Hensley Powell, Whitwell, Tenn., 10 bass, 39-0, $5,800

10th:       Anthony Ford, New Smyrna, Fla., 10 bass, 38-2, $4,400

A complete list of results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Mike Miller of Trinity, North Carolina, caught a bass weighing 9 pounds, 15 ounces Friday – the biggest of the tournament in the Pro Division. For his catch, Miller earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $300.

Also decided Saturday, pro Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia wrapped up the Costa FLW Series Strike King Angler of the Year Title in the Southeastern Division. With finishes of 8th place at Lake Okeechobee, 1st place at Lake Seminole and a 36th place showing at Lake Chickamauga, Gross accumulated a total of 708 points to take home the title and the $2,000 prize package.

Chase Whisenhunt of Trussville, Alabama, won the Co-angler Division and a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. Whisenhunt earned his win with a two-day total of eight bass weighing 28 pounds, 7 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers on Lake Chickamauga were:

1st:          Chase Whisenhunt, Trussville, Ala., eight bass, 28-7, $28,100

2nd:         James Wegmann, Fruitland Park, Fla., eight bass, 27-8, $6,050

3rd:         James Stowers, Narrows, Va., 10 bass, 26-6, $4,800

4th:         Mark Guhne, Hixson, Tenn., 10 bass, 25-10, $3,900

5th:         Nick Cupps, Chattanooga, Tenn., nine bass, 25-1, $3,400

6th:         Craig Rozema, Simpsonville, S.C., eight bass, 24-13, $2,900

7th:         Bruce Griffin, Jasper, Ala., 10 bass, 24-11, $2,400

8th:         Zac Smith, Cleveland, Ala., seven bass, 24-9, $1,950

9th:         Eddie Walker, Pinson, Ala., eight bass, 24-1, $1,580

10th:       Ray Puckett, Wetumpka, Ala., six bass, 23-14, $1,530

Puckett caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Saturday, a massive largemouth weighing 10 pounds, 7 ounces, and earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $200.

Co-angler Craig Rozema of Simpsonville, South Carolina won the Costa FLW Series Strike King Co-angler of the Year Title in the Southeastern Division. With finishes of 42nd place at Lake Okeechobee, 2nd place at Lake Seminole and a 6th place finish at Lake Chickamauga, Rozema accumulated a total of 703 points to take home the title and the $800 prize package.

The Costa FLW Series on Lake Chickamauga was hosted by the Rhea Economic & Tourism Council. It was the third and final regular-season Southeastern Division tournament of 2017. The next Costa FLW Series tournament will be a Western Division event, held May 11-13, on the California Delta in Bethel Island, California. For a complete schedule, visit FLWFishing.com.

Toyota Texas Fest On Sam Rayburn Expected To Become Instant Favorite For Fishing Fans

Toyota Texas Fest On Sam Rayburn Expected To Become Instant Favorite For Fishing Fans

[print_link]

LUFKIN, Texas — Sam Rayburn Reservoir is on a very short list of the all-time best fisheries to host a major bass tournament. Not surprisingly, more professional Bassmaster tournaments have been held on the 111,400-acre impoundment in east Texas — 31 — than on any other fishery in the United States.

Beginning with the 1968 All-American won by Bill Dance and continuing through more recent victories by current stars like Rick Clunn, Kevin VanDam, Edwin Evers and Shaw Grigsby, the events have thrilled and entertained fishing fans for nearly five decades.

But none, it is safe to say, have offered bass fishing fans the wealth of things to see and do and experience that will be available at the upcoming Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), to be held May 17-21.

That’s not surprising, since Texas Fest is the result of a merger of the fan-friendly Bassmaster BASSfest Elite Series tournaments of recent years and the uniquely formatted Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC), conducted on Texas lakes for the past 10 years.

“We’re excited to develop Texas Fest into one of the biggest events in competitive fishing while featuring the great work Texas Parks & Wildlife Department does to ensure the quality of outdoor recreation for the future,” said Brent Hillyer, vice president/Marketing for Gulf States Toyota, which created and sponsored TTBC from the beginning.

“Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest will combine the best features of the Toyota Texas Bass Classic and our own BASSfest tournament — both of which had become immensely popular among anglers and fishing fans,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “Texas Fest will host a special Fan Appreciation Day offering anglers and their families opportunities to meet, greet and learn from the world’s best professional anglers.”

And, borrowing a page from TTBC, the event will feature a catch-weigh-release format. Anglers’ catches will be weighed on identical scales by judges assigned to each boat. Immediately after being weighed, the fish will be released back into the lake. The Top 5 weights will be counted in each competitor’s daily catch, and the pros will bring in their largest bass, if 21 inches or longer, to the weigh-in stage at the George H. Henderson Jr. Expo Center in Lufkin each afternoon.

Dave Terre, Texas’ chief of Inland Fisheries Management and Research, said Texas Fest will showcase the catch-weigh-release system, which can enhance fish survival.

“This is a big deal for tournament bass fishing, no doubt,” Terre said. “We did it in TTBC for 10 years, and it really has its feet now. It presents an alternative format for the world of professional bass fishing and has moved the needle in the direction of fish care and conservation.”

Terre is also grateful that the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest continues a tradition of providing funding for his agency. Over the years, TTBC has generated more than $2 million for TPWD.

“We now have Gulf States Toyota, Toyota Motor North America and B.A.S.S. all coming together to provide this new tournament to benefit Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,” Terre said. “The tournament is under a new sponsorship arrangement — and a new name — but the funds that are generated out of this event will continue to build and continue to support youth fishing outreach initiatives in the state.”

With a $1 million payout available to the 109 Bassmaster Elite Series pros, including $100,000 to the winner and a $50,000 Toyota Tundra truck to the angler who catches the heaviest bass of the week —  along with an automatic entry into the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods — competition can be expected to be fierce.

Fans onshore will be able to follow all the action as it happens on Bassmaster LIVE and through the BASSTrakk leaderboard. Plus, they’ll have plenty to occupy their time — and their children — between LIVE updates.

On Friday and Saturday at the George H. Henderson Jr. Expo Center site, a “Get Hooked On Fishing” interactive children’s program will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Activities include casting lessons, fishing in the Bass Pro Shops Catch & Release Pond, and a chance to meet bass pro and former NFL wide receiver Kendall Newson, founder of the Teach a Child to Fish Foundation. School children from Lufkin area schools will be taking part in activities as part of a special field trip opportunity on Friday.

Youngsters will also be able to test their abilities to fish, pitch and cast on the popular Toyota CastingKids range, which will also be in operation during the Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo through Sunday.

Fan Appreciation Day is Saturday, May 20, when the Elite anglers take a day off fishing to participate in activities at the Expo and in Bassmaster University seminars, all taking place at George H. Henderson Jr. Expo Center. Festivities begin each day, Saturday and Sunday, at 10 a.m. Sunday is Military and Public Safety Personnel Day.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Adventures Area at the Expo is designed to entertain outdoor sports enthusiasts while teaching them about activities and resources. Among displays and hands-on activities are Archery, Boater Education, Casting, Coastal Fisheries Expo, Daisy Air Gun, Fish Fundamentals Aquarium, Invasive Species Awareness, Operation Game Thief Trailer — Wall of Shame, River & Stream/Texas Paddling Trails, Vamos a Pescar/Take Me Fishing Trailer — Learn to Fish, Texas State Fish Art, Texas State Parks, Toyota ShareLunker Trailer, TPW Bass Management, Water U Doing Road Trip and Wildlife Crime Scene Investigations.

In addition to its CastingKids course, Toyota is offering an experience geared to adults: the Toyota Ride and Drive obstacle course, open to qualified drivers 18 and over. Fishing families in the market for a new bass rig can take part in demo boat rides provided by Skeeter, Yamaha, Nitro, Triton and Mercury at Cassels-Boykin Park. Free shuttle transportation is provided between the Expo Center and the park.

Among dozens of vendors at the Outdoors Expo, leading manufacturers will be displaying and/or selling their products. Fishing fans will certainly want to tour the Berkley Experience Trailer. In addition, they can check out products and displays from Huk Performance Fishing, Power-Pole, Humminbird, Minn Kota, Phoenix Boats, Carhartt, Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels, Livingston Lures, Phoenix Boats, Shimano, T-H Marine and many others.

Also on Saturday of Texas Fest, the most exclusive high school bass tournament will be held on a nearby body of water. To qualify, students have to be named one of the 12 members of the 2017 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. In addition to being honored as one of the most outstanding student anglers in the nation, the All-Americans will get to participate in a one-day fun-fishing tournament as the teammate of one of the Elite anglers.

The standout anglers were selected from among more than 380 nominations of students in grades 10-12 representing 40 states across the nation. After reviewing tournament résumés, community service activities, academic achievement and recommendations from coaches and school officials, a panel of judges selected the Top 12 high school anglers in the country.

From watching the first boats take off from Cassels-Boykin Park at 7 a.m. CT on Wednesday, May 17, to the final weigh-in at the Henderson Expo Center on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. — and including the family-friendly activities and seminars in between — all venues are free and open to the public.

ASHLAND RESIDENT WINS $5,000 PRIZE PLAYING FANTASY FISHING

ASHLAND RESIDENT WINS $5,000 PRIZE PLAYING FANTASY FISHING

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (May 5, 2017) – Rick Whitt of Ashland, Kentucky, accumulated the most points of any Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Fantasy Fishing player worldwide to win $5,000 after last week’s FLW Tour event at Beaver Lake presented by General Tire in Rogers, Arkansas. Whitt won by assembling a team of anglers and earning points based on their performance in the FLW Tour fishing tournament.

“As a tournament-angler myself, I think this was probably the easiest victory I’ve ever had,” said Whitt. “I used the FLW website to see who had momentum heading into this event, put together my team, and with a little luck I won it all.

“I chose Bryan Thrift, because momentum-wise, he’s a no-brainer,” Whitt continued. “I also picked Cody Meyer because I figured Beaver Lake would be fishing tough, and he’s a finesse guy. I took John Cox, a couple of others, and ended up picking four of the top-10 finishers.”

Whitt said he hopes he can rack up enough points to win the $10,000 grand prize, which is awarded to the top player overall at the end of the 2017 tournament season.

“I’ve been playing FLW Fantasy Fishing since 2014 and that’s what I’m shooting for,” said Whitt.

Finishing in second place was John Deak of Phillipsburg, Ohio, who took home $1,000, and in third place was Michael Brown of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, who won $500.

Another contingent of winners from across the globe was awarded prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The 2017 Fantasy Fishing season consists of eight tournaments surrounding the FLW Tour regular season including the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the seven tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.

To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of eight anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights.

Megabass Destroyer FMJ Casting Rod Review By Jason Sealock May 3,2017

Megabass Destroyer FMJ Casting Rod Review

Jason Sealock

May 3,2017

A very impressive jig rod from the new Megabass Destroyer line for 2017.

The Megabass Destroyer line of bass fishing rods have become iconic in a short amount of time. The innovation and craftsmanship produced a performance not often found in a fishing rod. These rods, first released in 1996 in Japan, quickly created a legendary following, and now they have brought a new line of Destroyer Rods to the US in 2017 that incorporate brand new technologies to make some of the most innovative rod designs.

The first rod I fished from the new line was the Megabass Destroyer FMJ rod. The design of the Megabass Destroyer Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) sought to produce the ultimate jig rod. That sounds easier than it really is. A precision casting jig rod is one of the more difficult rods to make well. A little background will help you understand why.

First Look: Strike King Tour Grade Skipping Jig By Walker Smith May 2,2017

First Look: Strike King Tour Grade Skipping Jig

Walker Smith

May 2,2017

The newest addition to Strike King’s stout jig lineup is a must-have for shallow-water dock anglers.

I fish docks all year long; my home lakes are covered with ‘em. Without any question in my mind, the best way to catch more dock bass is by learning to put your baits in places other anglers cannot reach. If you’re simply making the “easy” casts, your catch rate can and will suffer.

Making the more difficult casts depends heavily upon your jig selection. I’ve spent years testing different skipping jigs and the Strike King Tour Grape Skipping Jig is one of my favorites for this application thus far.

Here’s why I say that.
