Bassmaster Elite Series To Visit Mississippi’s Ross Barnett Reservoir

RIDGELAND, Miss. — As 110 of the world’s best bass anglers converge on the central Mississippi fishery, thick-shouldered largemouth bass will be the center of attention at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Ross Barnett, April 27-30, out of Ridgeland.

With a $100,000 first-place prize and valuable Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points on the line, the fourth of nine regular-season Bassmaster Elite Series events will put the top-tier, competitive-angling spotlight on the picturesque 33,000-acre reservoir.

“We’ve had several years of very successful shad spawns — both gizzard and threadfin shad — that, in turn, have produced several impressive year classes of Ross Barnett bass,” said Ryan Jones, Central Region fisheries biologist for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP). “The fishery as a whole is very healthy, and the bass population is in tremendous shape right now.”

Jones said water levels have begun to stabilize following periods of high water, and he believes the Elite anglers should be in for some exciting fishing.

“Based on our fall sampling and survey data, the average largemouth bass weighed during tournaments in 2016 was about 2 1/2 pounds,” he said. “Thanks to a healthy forage base and adequate habitat for both predator and prey, the lake is more than capable of kicking out limits in the low 30-pound range.”

Although weights that heavy are unlikely during a postspawn event because the bass tend to lose weight during the annual breeding phase, Jones believes several five-bass limits exceeding 20 pounds will be a daily occurrence.

“In recent years, Ross Barnett was an average lake, at best. Tournament anglers would need to catch 12 to 15 pounds of bass per day to win a multi-day event, but I fully expect to see a big improvement with the world’s best bass fishermen on the water,” he said. “I believe we’ll see a big bass in the 8- to 9-pound range, and a fish exceeding 10 pounds would not surprise me at all.”

Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., won a 2013 Bass Pro Shops Central Open on Ross Barnett with a three-day total of 41 pounds, 15 ounces, or about 14 pounds per day. But the Elite Series veteran is excited to get back to the improved Mississippi bass lake and compete for another coveted blue trophy.

“I’ve heard the lake has improved dramatically, and as I’ve monitored tournament weights during the pre-practice period, I’ve been impressed with the size of bass regularly brought to the scales,” said Tharp. “Other than the Open I won there, I don’t have a lot of other experience to draw from, but I do know that anytime I can flip a jig I’m happy. And, you can bet a jig will play this time around.”

Takeoff will begin daily at 6:15 a.m. CT from Madison Landing in Ridgeland, Miss., and weigh-ins will be held each afternoon at Old Trace Park beginning at 3:15 p.m.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will also take place at Old Trace Park on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The expo will feature boat and motor demo rides by Skeeter, Yamaha, Nitro, Triton and Mercury, live music, food trucks, beer garden and arts and crafts vendors. Toyota and Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will also be onsite with activities such as an archery range, video game competitions, disc golf, putt-putt and more.

The event is hosted by the Ridgeland Tourism Commission.

Chad Garrison & Casey White Win Hurricane Creek Bass Trail April 15,2017

Chad Garrison & Casey White took home 1st place with a 14.24lb bag for $435 and big fish of 4.58lb for $100 landing them a 6 hour $535 payday
Ethan Dale Oakley & Daniel Bond left in 2nd place with also a 14.24lb bag to tie for 1st place unfortunately their big fish was only 3.54lb which knocked them down to 2nd for a $195 payout.
Scott & Ryan Gastley landed themselves in 3rd place with 10.40lb for a payout of $75
It was one of those hit or miss days. You either got on a good spot or you didnt. 5 boats in the field zeroed out and only a few boats actually found the quality fish. Fish were sitting out in the 10′ range mostly being caught on jigs/plastics.
Fish still seem to be in the pre spawn pattern but with steady weather and water temps rising the spawn will come soon.

Ark Rods Invoker Series Casting Rod Review By Jason Sealock April 12,2017

Ark Rods Invoker Series Casting Rod Review

Jason Sealock

April 12,2017

New rod company building solid sticks out of the gate.

The folks at Ark Rods sent me the Invoker Series 7-foot, 3-inch Mag Medium Heavy casting rod to test recently. When the truck arrived with my rod, he carried it up to my porch like a dead body, two broken ends of the rod tube dangling, broke at an angle but somehow supported still. I had never seen a rod tube flop like that before. They had marked it locally as received in damaged condition. So I had little hope I was actually going to get to test this rod.

I opened the end and carefully slid the rod Ark Rods Inovker Series rod out of the tube and discovered it was completely intact. In fact there was no noticeable blemish or scuffs anywhere on the rod. So the tube was broken in two places, but somehow the rod was unscathed. A pretty good testament to a rods durability, and it hadn’t even been on the water yet.

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE READIES FOR YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE OPENER

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE READIES FOR YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE OPENER

[print_link]

BEDFORD, Va. (April 18, 2017) – YETI FLW College Fishing is headed to Smith Mountain Lake April 29 for the first of three regular-season stops in the Northern Conference. A full field of college fishing clubs will be competing for $2,000 and an invitation to the 2018 College Fishing National Championship.

“Smith Mountain Lake is full of fish and this is a good time of the year to catch them,” said FLW Tour pro Billy Shelton of La Crosse, Virginia, who has two top-10 career finishes on Smith Mountain Lake in FLW competition. “Right now bass are in all three phases of the spawn. This will be one of those events where anglers are able to do whatever they want to catch a limit.

“For those anglers who have never fished Smith Mountain before, you can’t go wrong targeting docks,” Shelton continued. “There are thousands of them on the lake. Obviously, teams will have to pattern which docks bass will be on. They are usually in the backs of pockets or the mouths of pockets.”

Shelton said that finesse-type baits, wacky-rigged worms and jigs should produce some quality bites for anglers.

“Teams may also run up the Blackwater and Roanoke Rivers to find a little stained water,” said Shelton. “Crankbaits and spinnerbaits will do well in shallow-water areas, but the majority of the lake is pretty clear.”

Shelton went on to say that swimbaits may also play a role for competitors, but it will depend on weather conditions.

“If there is wind and clouds, they may be able to catch them on rocky points near the mouths of pockets,” said Shelton. “The conditions will have to be right, though. If it turns out to be a calm, bluebird sky kind of day, a wacky-rigged worm around docks will be the way to win it.”

The Virginia pro said he expects the winning team to bring a five-bass limit nearing 20 pounds to the weigh-in stage.

Anglers will take off from Parkway Marina, located at 16918 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston, Virginia, at 7 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Why You Should Cast Parallel for Spring Bass By Luke Stoner April 13,2017

Why You Should Cast Parallel for Spring Bass

Luke Stoner

April 13,2017

Casting angles can be a huge difference maker throughout the spring. Wired2Fish contributor and accomplished angler Luke Stoner explains the importance of utilizing parallel casts to maximize your effectiveness.

Spring has sprung and bass are moving to the shoreline throughout the entire country. This process is in different stages depending on how far north or south you live, but no matter where you reside the bass in your area are going to be somewhere around the bank.

One simple, yet effective way to up your spring catch rates is to utilize parallel casts
