Nominations Being Accepted For 2017 Bassmaster High School All-Americans
[print_link]
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. is seeking nominations for the best and brightest high school bass anglers in the country.
The Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods recognizes the 12 best high school anglers in the nation. The program is designed to reward young athletes for their performance in tournaments, leadership in their communities and involvement in conservation efforts.
“We’re thrilled to be part of such a great program for young anglers,” said Dave Natale, director of sports and event marketing, DICK’S Sporting Goods. “Ensuring that our youth have the opportunity to be involved in sports and outdoor activities that teach them lifelong lessons such as leadership and service is something that we are very passionate about as a company.”
Applications for the team, which is now in its third year, will be accepted today through Feb. 17.
To be considered, a student must be nominated by a parent, coach, teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10 through 12 with a current grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible.
Judges will select up to two student anglers in each state. These All-State Fishing Team members will become semifinalists in the selection of the 12-member All-American Team. Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments and involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities.
The anglers chosen will compete in a one-day Bassmaster All-American High School Tournament to be held in conjunction with the 2017 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department — one of nine regular-season Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments being held this year. Elite Series anglers will serve as “coaches” for the student anglers in the one-day fishing event near Lufkin, Texas. The high school standouts will be honored before the weigh-in crowd, and each will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine, which has 4.4 million readers per issue.
“We are so proud of our High School All-American program and the students it has recognized over the years,” said Hank Weldon, senior manager of the Bassmaster High School program. “Many have gone on to enjoy successful careers on college bass fishing teams. In fact, the All-American team selection has become an important tool for universities looking to offer bass fishing scholarships, and we’re honored to spotlight young ambassadors of the sport.”
All students who compete in high school fishing events are eligible, regardless of whether they are affiliated with B.A.S.S. or another fishing organization.
Notices have been sent to youth fishing directors of the B.A.S.S. Nation and other organizations, as well as leaders of state high school fishing programs. Adults can nominate students by filling out an online form at Bassmaster.com/allamerican. Nominations must be submitted before midnight, Feb. 17.

Wiggins Earns Second Career B.A.S.S. Victory At Southern Open On Florida’s Harris Chain
Jesse Wiggins of Cullman, Ala., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #1 held on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla. Wiggins brought 21 pounds, 5 ounces to Saturday’s weigh-in, giving him a three-day total of 59-4.

Wiggins Earns Second Career B.A.S.S. Victory At Southern Open On Florida’s Harris Chain
[print_link]
LEESBURG, Fla. — If Jesse Wiggins is going to keep winning fishing tournaments, someone is going to have to put a rush order on his pro fishing jersey.
While most professional anglers are outfitted in fishing jerseys adorned with more patches than you can count, the Bassmaster Elite Series rookie sported a plain red T-shirt Saturday when he climbed from fourth place to the top spot in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 1 on the Harris Chain of Lakes with a final-day catch of 21 pounds, 5 ounces.
Wiggins’ three-day mark of 59-4 was just over a pound better than that of second-place finisher John Pollard (58-1).
In many ways, Wiggins’ simple red T-shirt was symbolic of his meteoric rise in professional fishing — it’s straight talk, and no frills. The clothing choice was even more appropriate though, considering the only insignia on it (besides a B.A.S.S. patch) was a Jenko Fishing logo.
Jenko is the maker of the crankbait Wiggins used to win the first Bassmaster tournament of the 2017 season. For the 27-year old Cullman, Ala., native, it was his second Opens victory in 10 months. His first came in last year’s Southern Open on Alabama’s Smith Lake.
“I expected to win that one on Smith Lake (close to home,)” Wiggins said to the crowd gathered at the Orlando Bass Pro Shops for the final weigh-in. “This one, I had no idea. I’m shaking like a leaf on a tree up here.”
Wiggins earned a package, including cash and a Nitro boat valued at $51,400 for his victory Saturday. He also claimed a spot in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods with the victory, which is the first berth awarded for the event this season.
During Saturday’s final weigh-in, Wiggins was in the Hot Seat and was waiting for Friday’s leader and Elite Series pro Justin Lucas to bring his bag to the scales. Lucas feigned that he might have a bag big enough to supplant Wiggins in the top spot, but he only had 9-9, which left him in fourth place overall with 53-2.
That made Wiggins’ Saturday limit of 21-5 not only the largest of the day, but the eighth-heaviest of the entire Southern Open. Combined with his weights on the first two days (17-5 Thursday and 20-10 Friday), it was more than enough to win.
“It’s a great bag to finish with and a perfect way to start the season,” he said. “I’m absolutely speechless.”
Wiggins found several spots that held quality bass using his Lowrance electronics during practice. But when most of his competitors were either working grass beds or trying to sight fish for spawning females on beds, Wiggins turned to the Jenko crankbait in the deepest areas of Lake Eustis — about a 15-minute run from the launch point in Leesburg’s Venetian Gardens.
“I was using a jighead with a worm,” he said. “It was a shaky head 6-inch finesse worm in green pumpkin on the first day, and I got some good bites. Then I’d go to the Jenko CD20 in citrus shad. That crankbait was the key. In shallower stuff, I’d throw the CD15. The fish were both on top of the drops and right below them. I was fishing in about 20 feet of water, looking for drops.”
Wiggins said going with fishing styles (cranking, floating worms) he uses back home in Alabama was important. While he admitted the techniques might be unusual during the beginning of the spawn in central Florida, they are the ones with which he is most comfortable — kind of like the red T-shirt.
“If I have one word of advice, it’s always bring with you something you know from home,” he said. “I’m used to cranking on the Tennessee River at ledge fish, and I’m used to throwing a worm on Smith Lake. I used both here. You don’t always win, but I knew that if I found the right stuff offshore, no one else was going to be doing it and I’d have it all to myself.”
Wiggins said the Opens victory was the perfect start to a season that will include his debut on the Elite Series next month on Tennessee’s Cherokee Lake.
“I never figured it would happen this fast,” he said. “This just blows my mind. I just wanted to survive. This means so much to my career. It’s hard out there trying to get the sponsorship money.”
Which leads us back to his pro jersey.
“I’ve got it ordered,” he said. “It should be in next week or so.”
Behind Wiggins and Pollard in the Top 12 were: third, Hunter Shryock, 56-4; fourth, Lucas, 53-2; fifth, Marty Robinson, 52-10; sixth, David Kilgore, 46-8; seventh, Scott Canterbury, 44-13; eighth, Brandon Card, 43-9; ninth, Derek Hudnall, 42-15; 10th, John Cox, 41-11; 11th, Joshua Stracner, 40-11; 12th, David Hudson, 39-8.
Fred Rigdon of Belleview, Fla., won the co-angler division with a three-day total of 26-11. Co-anglers were allowed to catch three fish per day. Rigdon won a Nitro boat package.
The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 went to Jordan Lee of Guntersville, Ala., with a 9-4 bass. Larry Maring of Minneola, Fla., weighed in a 7-0 bass to earn the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award on the co-angler side worth $250.
Justin Lucas of Guntersville, Ala., received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Day 2. Finishing as the Day 2 leader on the co-angler side, Rigdon received a Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250.
Brandon Card of Knoxville, Tenn., earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $500.

DICK’S Sporting Goods Joins GEICO Bassmaster Classic As Presenting Sponsor
[print_link]
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — DICK’S Sporting Goods today announced an expanded partnership with B.A.S.S., as the retailer became the presenting sponsor of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic through 2019. This year’s Classic is to be held on Lake Conroe, outside of Houston, Texas, March 24-26. DICK’S has sponsored the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo for nine consecutive years, and will continue to do so for the 2017-2019 championships.
“DICK’S has been a vital part of the Bassmaster Classic for almost a decade now, so it is exciting to see the relationship grow at what we believe will be a historic championship,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “With its name associated with the highest-profile fishing event in the world, DICK’S will be reaching the most avid of bass fishermen. And Bassmaster fans can be assured that DICK’S is dedicated to supplying all the gear needed to create a successful day on the water.”
The 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods is the 47th annual championship of professional bass fishing. The three-day competition will pit 52 of the world’s best anglers against each other for the Classic’s overall payout of more than $1 million. The playing field will be Lake Conroe, located an hour north of Houston.
“We’re excited to expand our partnership with B.A.S.S. in a way that will allow us to connect with a passionate fishing audience,” said Dave Natale, director of sports and event marketing, DICK’S Sporting Goods. “At DICK’S, we believe in creating meaningful relationships with our customers. Events like the Bassmaster Classic allow us to do that year after year.”
The anglers will bring their catches to Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, for the weigh-in. This exciting venue is expected to house record-breaking crowds to watch what many believe will be record-breaking weights across the stage. All Classic activities are free and open to the public.
“We couldn’t be more impressed with the commitment DICK’S has made to bass anglers. This retailer has proved it cares about the future of our sport through its support of our High School programs, as well as our marquee events. This company’s passion mirrors that of our fans, and I think the entire sport will benefit from this commitment,” Akin said.

Lucas, Robinson Will Lead Field Into Final Day Of Southern Open On Florida’s Harris Chain
[print_link]
LEESBURG, Fla. — The sun was about to slip below the horizon by the time Justin Lucas came to the stage for Friday’s weigh-in of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 1.
At that point, about 360 of the 400 anglers already had weighed their bass in front of a healthy crowd at Venetian Gardens. If you had asked just about any of them, they probably would have said it was practically certain that Thursday’s leader, Marty Robinson, would hold onto the top spot heading into Saturdays’ final day of fishing on the Harris Chain of Lakes.
But Lucas had other plans.
The Guntersville, Ala., resident and California native swooped in at the 11th hour with a five-fish limit that weighed 21 pounds, 14 ounces. That gave Lucas a 43-9 total for two days, and has him more than 2 pounds ahead of Robinson heading into the final round.
Lucas was the only angler of the 200 in the pro division who caught 20-pound bags the first two days of the tournament. He’s never won an Open, and he told the crowd he’s itching to add to his trophy collection.
“I already have two on the mantle from the Elite Series,” Lucas said, referencing his wins on the Potomac River in 2016 and the Sacramento River a year earlier. “But no Open trophies … We want them all.”
Robinson, the Elite Series pro who led after Day 1 with 23-11, was undeterred by losing the lead. He said he’s repeating a familiar saying to himself this week to stay focused.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” Robinson said. “And I’ve got the will.”
It certainly appears he’s on the right track. Robinson followed with a strong five-fish limit of 17-13 Friday, and his two-day total of 41-8 puts him in a solid second place with one day remaining.
The field was cut to 12 after the Friday weigh-in. Also surviving to fish Saturday were Hunter Shryock (third, 40-8); Jesse Wiggins (fourth, 37-15); John Pollard (fifth, 37-5); Brandon Card (sixth, 36-9); John Cox (seventh, 35-13); Scott Canterbury (eighth, 34-4); Derek Hudnall (ninth, 34-1); David Kilgore (10th, 33-4); David Hutson (11th, 32-15); and Joshua Stracner (12th, 32-14).
Like Lucas, Robinson has been impressive on the Harris Chain. He caught two 6-pounders sight fishing early Thursday, but windier weather Friday forced him to employ alternate strategies. He fished both offshore and along shorelines and said he may consider a mix of methods in the final round when there’s less pressure on the water.
“Today I was kind of scared to go looking for some sight fish at the end of the day because guys had been in and out of those canals all day,” Robinson said. “That’s made them skittish and real hard to catch. But now that it’s down to 12 guys, why not expand a little bit?”
Robinson said he’d love to have weather just like anglers enjoyed Friday — temperatures in the 80s, partly cloudy skies, and (perhaps most important) winds about 8 to 10 mph out of the southwest.
“I think a little bit of wind and cloud cover helped fishing,” he said. “I lost a great old big one, and I caught a limit fairly quick. We’ve got a front rolling in here (Sunday,) and the day before the front is usually a good day for fishing. I’m in the 12, so I know I’ve got a shot.”
So does Shryock, who has been a model of consistency this week. After weighing a 22-11 limit Thursday, he followed with 18-7 Friday.
Shryock also caught some sizable bass sight fishing early Thursday morning, but his spot wasn’t productive Friday with brisk winds prevailing. But as he did Thursday, the Newcomerstown, Ohio, resident turned to an alternate shallow spot that he said has him “ecstatic” about the possibility of a big bag Saturday.
Regardless of what’s to come, Shryock already is guaranteed at least the second-highest finish in his fourth year on the circuit (he finished fifth at a Bass Pro Shops Northern Open on Lake Erie in 2013.)
“It’s not so much a pattern that I’m fishing, but the spot itself,” Shryock said. “There’s a whole lot of fish and activity in there. There were a couple of other anglers there with me today, and I’m not sure what they caught. If they don’t finish in the Top 12, there could be less pressure in there tomorrow, and more places for me to hit.”
Wiggins also has found success in this Southern Open. After bagging a 17-5 limit Thursday, he’s in the Top 12 after following with a 20-10 haul on Friday. Wiggins said he didn’t even consider sight fishing this week, and instead, he’s fishing offshore in about 8-10 feet of water.
“I have two spots, and I haven’t even been to one of them,” the Elite Series rookie said. “I got a limit two days off of just one of them. It’s a great way to start the season.”
Florida’s Fred Rigdon leads the co-angler field after Day 2, with a total of 23-4.
The winner in the pro division will earn $51,400 in cash and prizes, including a Nitro boat package. The top co-angler also wins a Nitro boat package.
The final day’s launch will take place at 7 a.m. ET at Venetian Gardens. The weigh-in will be held at Bass Pro Shops, 5156 International Drive in Orlando at 4:15 p.m.

FLW TOUR READIES TO KICKOFF 2017 SEASON AT LAKE GUNTERSVILLE
Big Weights Expected in Internationally-Televised Bass Tournament featuring 330 Anglers
[print_link]
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Jan. 19, 2017) – The first tournament of the 22nd season of the FLW Tour, the most competitive Tour in professional bass-fishing, kicks off Feb. 2-5 with the FLW Tour at Lake Guntersville presented by Lowrance. Hosted by the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the tournament will feature 330 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

“Guntersville is setting up a little differently than it has the last couple of years,” said local FLW Tour pro Alex Davis of Albertville, Alabama, who has 12 top-10 finishes on Lake Guntersville in FLW competition. The weather has been warm, so the fishing has been a little tough. The fish are still here, but I think they are just doing stuff a little different and anglers haven’t been able to figure it out yet.”
Davis said that the tournament anglers will have to make a decision on how they want to approach the event – fish the grass or battle the boat traffic on the community bridges and creeks.
“It’s really no secret anymore,” Davis said. “Those major bridges and big creeks play a big factor in tournaments held here and they have for years. South Sauty Creek, North Sauty Creek, Brown Creek – all of them hold large quantities of quality fish. But, if you go to those bridges you’re going to have to get in there and join the crowds.
“People that don’t fish a bridge are going to be fishing some sort of grass, whether it’s the deeper hydrilla or shallow milfoil,” Davis continued. “The last few years, every major tournament that has fished here I have predicted that there was too much pressure on the bridges and there was no way that the tournament would be won there. But, every year I have been wrong.”
Davis said that jigs, crankbaits and swimbaits would be popular on the bridges, whereas anglers fishing the grass would be throwing rattle baits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and bladed jigs.
“I think that the winner is going to weigh in a four-day total around 85 pounds,” said Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury of Springville, Alabama. “The lake is fishing a little tough but Guntersville is legendary for big bass and huge weights and I know the big ones still live there.”
“I think we’re going to see 85 to 90 pounds,” added Davis. “There are going to be some huge limits weighed in. If a guy can average 20 to 22 pounds a day, he’s going to be right there at the end.”
Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. CST each day from the Guntersville City Harbor located at 201 Blount Ave., in Guntersville. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, Feb. 2-3, will also be held at the Guntersville City Harbor beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, Feb. 4-5, will be held at the Guntersville City Harbor but will begin at 4 p.m.
Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at Guntersville City Harbor from noon to 4 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.
Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at Guntersville City Harbor on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 9-11 a.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to area youth 15 years of age and younger and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one.
As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit elementary students at Cherokee Elementary School in Guntersville on Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 8-9:30 a.m. to introduce students to fishing and outdoor activities in their community. During the presentations the pro anglers will reinforce how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) relate to outdoor activities as well as boating safety. Another contingent of FLW Tour pros will visit patients at the Marshall Medical Center in Guntersville at the same time to interact with guests, snap photos and sign autographs for patients and share fishing stories.
In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of 330 anglers competes in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 20 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.
Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2017 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina Aug. 11-13.
The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Guntersville presented by Lowrance is more than $800,000, including $10,000 through 50th place in the Pro Division.

Trapper Tackle reins in a trifecta of bass fishing talent to spread the gospel of Trapper Hooks

Palm Beach Gardens, FL (January 19, 2017) – Fresh off a whirlwind introduction in 2016, including best-in-show accolades at ICAST 2016 and the Pitman Creek Wholesale Show, and rounding out an award trifecta with terminal tackle best-in show honors at Big Rock West, the industry barnstormers at Trapper Tackle have stocked their pro team shelves with established anglers and up-and-comers from coast to coast. Through both outreach and high-level competition, these new Trapper teammates are poised to show the world the bait-holding and fish-securing power of the innovative, patented Trapper Hooks.
West Coast tournament angler Ken Mah is a 20-year veteran of the fishing industry, boasting several tournament victories across California and eight FLW Outdoors Top 10 finishes. “I pride myself in always looking for an edge in tournament fishing, and the Trapper Box gives me just that,” Mah stated. “I’ve been fishing Trapper Hooks for the past two months, side-by-side with traditional J-shaped hooks. During that time, I’ve noticed that once I hook a fish, I land a higher percentage of them with Trapper Hooks – they’re simply superior.” In 2017, Mah will compete in FLW Costa Del Mar series events, the Wild West Bass Trail, US Open, and the Clear Lake Open.
Louisiana-based Derek Hudnall offers a lifetime of outdoor experiences and a solid tournament fishing resume to the Trapper Tackle team. Hudnall fished his first BFL event at the age of 16, and was the points leader in the Southern Division by the ripe age of 18. Fast forward 10 years to 2015-2016, when Hudnall fished 9 B.A.S.S. Open Series events and racked up 2 top-30’s, one top-20 and one top-10 finish. When considering the unique attributes of Trapper Hooks, Hudnall states that, “I had never fished with a product that instantly increases my bass hook-up ratio…until I tied on my first Trapper Hook.” Hudnall is setting the bar high in 2017, when he will compete in all three B.A.S.S. Open Series – Central, Southern and Northern – with the B.A.S.S. Elite Series in his sights.
Samantha Gay brings a unique combination of competitive fishing and youth outreach experience to the Trapper Tackle team. A member of the North Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation State Team, Gay also has a passion for providing fishing and outdoor experiences to children: she is the founder of Fishers of Kids Angler’s Academy, an outreach program that teaches life lessons, promotes healthy living and has the potential to change lives, through fishing. Trapper Hooks will be a big part of helping these kids to catch their first fish, lighting the fire of fishing passion in young anglers throughout North Carolina.
Derek Hudnall
Trapper Tackle CEO, George Catuogno notes, “Ken Mah, Samantha Gay and Derek Hudnall are anglers that understand both the sport and the business of fishing. In 2017 it’s not enough just to be a great angler; you also have to know how to be an effective promoter and use the tools of the trade. These three gifted anglers are great additions to the Trapper family, and have the right combination of skills and passion to help build our brand.”
Now available at retailers across the country and on-line, the award-winning Trapper Hooks make use of the exquisitely engineered Trapper Box to help baits stay rigged correctly, and to help keep fish pinned to the hook after the strike. Compatible with a wide variety of soft plastics as well as live and natural baits, Trapper Hooks are designed to help anglers land more fish, and have more fun, every time they are on the water.

Robinson Grabs Day 1 Lead As Big Names Sack Big Bass At Southern Open On Florida’s Harris Chain

Robinson Grabs Day 1 Lead As Big Names Sack Big Bass At Southern Open On Florida’s Harris Chain

LEESBURG, Fla. – Florida bills itself as the “Fishing Capital of the World,” and the Harris Chain of Lakes
is one of its crown jewels.
On Thursday in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 1, the acclaimed Florida fishery showed off a bit – for mid-January, at least.
From the time Alabama pro Deron Patrick started the 3 1/2-hour weigh-in with a 16-pound, 2-ounce limit, until the last of the field of 400 checked in, a steady stream of fish came across the stage. It made for an impressive display and for a momentous first day in the first Bassmaster tournament of the 2017 season.
Bassmaster Elite Series pro Marty Robinson of Lyman, S.C., had the heaviest bag among the 200 boating anglers, with five bass that weighed 23-11. The total gave him a narrow lead in the three-day tournament being held on this 80,000-acre network of lakes.
But he wasn’t the only one who was successful Thursday. Thirty-three pro anglers boated at least 15 pounds of bass, and eight of those bags weighed more than 20 pounds. Closest to Robinson are Hunter Shryock (second place, 22-1) and former Elite Series pro Ken Iyobe (third, 21-14). Others catching 20 pounds or more were fishing legend Paul Elias (fourth, 21-12); Justin Lucas (fifth, 21-11); Jordan Lee (sixth, 21-0); John Pollard (seventh, 20-11); and Chris Heath (eighth, 20-8).
A couple of options were available to the anglers Thursday, as both prespawn and bedding fish were located. Partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the low 80s and light winds made conditions similar to what the rest of the U.S. finds in spring.
Robinson had the right mix. His bag included two 6-pounders he caught sight fishing and three other sizable bass caught by other means later in the day. He said he’ll have to start someplace different Friday, because it’s likely the beds he hit Thursday won’t replenish in time for him to turn the trick on back-to-back days.
Still, being in the lead is a nice problem to have.
“I wasn’t sure I would be able to get to my big fish because of my draw (number 95 of 200 boats to launch this morning),” Robinson said. “But I was able to reach them in time, and the spots were pretty close together. I didn’t have to run far at all after I got the first one. That helped to be able put those two in the boat early.”
Shryock was one of the pros taking advantage of the near ideal conditions. Like Robinson, he caught
some big bass while sight fishing, and then lit into the rest of his limit in several different areas he found productive in practice. He was encouraged by what he saw Thursday.
“I didn’t get to go to the area I wanted to today, being in Boat 165,” Shryock said. “So I went to a backup area and it turned out to be better than I expected it to be. I was around a lot of activity and a lot of shallow fish.”
Lee, another Elite Series pro, weighed the biggest bass — a 9-4 monster which is the largest he’s ever caught. The catch came at about 10 a.m. when he only had a few small bass in the livewell.
“I was just pitching a worm around, and all of a sudden, line was coming off,” Lee said. “Then ‘Boom!’ I was shaking a little bit. You can’t help it when you catch one that big … It wasn’t bedding, so it was a bit of good fortune, for sure. I just went to an area where I had caught a few fish (in practice). But the rest of them were small. I’ll have to go back to work tomorrow.”
As will all 400 of the anglers in this event. They know they have to keep grinding, as all it takes is a couple of monster bass to vault someone from the back of the pack to a place among the leaders.
“I love coming to Florida this time of year to fish,” said Elite Series pro Chad Morganthaler, who was in 33rd place with a 15-1 total after Day 1. “When these fish are in the prespawn and spawn mode, you can make up a lot of ground in a hurry. I’m excited about getting out there tomorrow.”
The winner on the boater side will be awarded $51,400 in cash and prizes. The champ also will earn a berth into the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic, provided he or she fishes in all of the three Southern Open events this year. On the co-angler side, Louisiana’s James Simmons is in first place with a three-fish limit of 12-15. Alabama’s Richard Arnold is in second with 11-3, and William Gaston is third with 10-14.
All 400 anglers and co-anglers will launch Friday from Venetian Gardens, 250 Ball Park Road, in Leesburg. The Day 2 weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. ET at Ski Beach Park on Lake Harris Drive, also in Venetian Gardens.
Saturday’s championship weigh-in, which will feature the Top 12 anglers after Day 2, will be held at Bass Pro Shops, 5156 International Drive, in Orlando beginning at 4:15 p.m. ET.

North Carolina Woman Wins Trip For Two In The Fish With Bobby Lane Sweepstakes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. member and avid angler, Rhonda Conway of Star, N.C., will get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to fish with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Bobby Lane, next month, after winning the Bassmaster Fish In Florida With Bobby Lane Sweepstakes presented by Visit Florida.
“I didn’t believe it at first, and I am still in shock,” Conway said. “I think I have cried twice already.”
Conway will take a trip to Lake Toho in Kissimmee, Fla., after the second Bassmaster Elite Series event is over. Her husband, Steve, will go along with her. The trip includes airfare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations and $500 spending money.
In addition to getting the chance to fish with Bobby Lane, Conway also won a Humminbird Helix 10 SI fishfinder, Minn Kota Ultrex trolling motor, Yamaha PW3028 pressure washer and a Power-Pole Micro Anchor with spike. She also received prize packs from Abu Garcia and Spiderwire, Phoenix Boats, Bob’s Machine Shop, Yozuri, Gillz and two pairs of Costa Del Mar Sunglasses. The total value of her winnings is $12,000.
Conway and her husband own a Triton boat, and after winning the sweepstakes, they are excited to add to it.
“I have been on a boat since I was 2 years old. I fished my first small tournament when I was 7 years old. I still fish wildcat and benefit tournaments in my hometown.
“My uncle used to babysit,” Conway said, “and that meant he was going fishing, and we were going with him. So to me fishing is everything; it’s all I really know.”
Conway was selected by random drawing out of 325,000 entries.
Fishing fans will have another chance to win by entering now in the Fish With Toyota Bassmaster Angler Of The Year Gerald Swindle Sweepstakes.
The lucky winner will receive a trip to fish with Gerald Swindle, including hotel accommodations, round-trip airfare, ground transportation and $500 cash. In addition, the winner will receive a Triton 17TX Boat with Mercury 60HP 4-stroke and more. The total value of the prize package is $32,500.
Users can enter every day until Friday, March 31 at Bassmaster.com/Sweepstakes.

Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing Is Ready To Roll In 2017
[print_link]
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — With more than $74,000 on the line for 2017, including a Triton bass boat, Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing presented by Toyota is now officially open for team selection. It all kicks off with the season opener Bassmaster Elite at Cherokee Lake, Feb. 9-12.
And, it’s free.
In recent years, Fantasy Fishing has created a viral following of hardcore and dedicated tournament anglers and Bassmaster fans that come together to compete during each Elite Series event and the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. Each player selects from five buckets to create a team of five anglers, hoping their selections will perform the best at each event.
And it’s not just for bragging rights either; there are some sweet prizes on the line.
The individual event first-prize winners will receive a $2,500 Bass Pro Shops Gift Card; there will be 11 of these winners.
If that individual event first-place prize winner is a B.A.S.S. member, he or she will receive an additional $500 Bass Pro Shops Gift Card.
The individual events second-place prize winner will receive a GoPro Hero4 Black POV action camera valued at nearly $350.
In other words, you have an opportunity to win pretty big at each event, while still accumulating points toward the season-ending grand prize.
The Fantasy Fishing competitor who earns the most points and beats the entire field of Fantasy Fishing competitors across the whole 11-event season will receive the grand prize. The grand prize is a Triton 189TrX with a 150-horsepower Yamaha (VF150LA). The boat will be rigged with a 24-volt, 70-pound MotorGuide X3 trolling motor and a Lowrance Mark 5 fishfinder.
If the Fantasy Fishing champion is a B.A.S.S. member, he/she will receive an additional $500 Bass Pro Shops gift card on top of it all.
During the 2016 Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing season, B.A.S.S. experimented with a new autofill feature. It was set in place for those players who may have accidently forgotten to fill out their roster or missed a tournament due to unforeseen circumstances.
Players disapproval of the autofill feature led to a unanimous decision to remove it for 2017.
Now on an event-by-event basis, players must physically evaluate each bucket and fill out the roster prior to each tournament cutoff. If not, players won’t collect any points for that event.
Another change this year is the Classic will now count as a regular event in the lineup of tournaments. In the past, it was a stand-alone tournament that didn’t impact the final, season-ending tally. Now it does.
