Sportfishing and Boating Community Launches Campaign to Increase Angling Participation

Washington, DC – The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) unveiled a campaign called “60-in-60” during a policy briefing on Capitol Hill this morning, hosted by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF). This campaign aims to increase numbers of anglers in the United States from 46 million to 60 million in 60 months by 2021.

Representatives from the angling and boating community as well as Members of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) attended the policy briefing to learn about the campaign, focusing on ways to reassess the nation’s approach to recruiting, retaining, and reactivating anglers, especially younger segments of the population. While angler numbers have remained relatively stable, the average age of those who buy a fishing license is getting older.

Bryan Schmitt Claims Bassmaster Victory At Champlain

[print_link]

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Bryan Schmitt fed Lake Champlain bass a steady diet of bogus crawfish this week to win the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open finale.

Fishing in only his fourth Bassmaster Open, Schmitt won the pro division title and took home the top prize of $52,278, including a Triton TR-19X with a Mercury 200 Pro XS outboard worth $45,000. He finished with a winning total of 15 bass weighing 59 pounds, 13 ounces.

Schmitt said he lost one “giant” fish today, but he boated everything else to finish the day with an 18-14 limit. The Deale, Md., angler caught a heavyweight limit of smallmouth Thursday, but the rain and clouds slowed down his smallmouth bite today. He still concentrated on smallmouth but his limit included a mixture of two green and three brown bass. “I had to adjust a little bit,” Schmitt said. “I fished one spot today that had largemouth and smallmouth.”

The Chesapeake Bay charter guide stuck with a 1/2-ounce Riot Baits Minima Jig in a green pumpkin/black color, tipped with a green pumpkin Riot Baits Fuzzy Beaver all week to catch both largemouth and smallmouth. Noticing that bass were spitting up crawfish in his livewell inspired Schmitt to use the jig throughout the tournament.

“I was throwing some swimbaits and did some Carolina rigging, but once I caught all the largemouth from one spot, I went to my smallmouth spot. I tried the swimbait, Carolina rig and drop shot, but as soon as I picked up the jig, it was just game on,” he said.

Schmitt keyed on shoals with a mixture of rocks and weeds to catch both largemouth and smallmouth. Most of his fish were holding near the bottom at 10 to 12 feet deep. After making a long cast to his spots, Schmitt would hop the jig about 5 feet off the bottom and let it drop. He said most of his strikes occurred on the fall.

Bartlett, Ill., angler Stephen Mui caught a 20-8 limit today to climb from ninth place into second in the pro division. He spent the week drop shotting a hump with a Strike King Dream Shot and Missile Baits Fuse about 16 feet deep for smallmouth and flipped a homemade jig later in shallow cover for largemouth to catch a three-day total of 58-3.

The remaining Top 5 finishers in the pro division included Alton Jones Jr., Lorena, Texas, third place, 56-6; Chris Molineaux, Hope Valley, R.I., fourth, 56-3; and David Gaston, Sylacauga, Ala., fifth, 55-0.

Winning the co-angler division and a $30,000 Nitro Z18/Mercury Pro XS rig was Eric Stecker, who caught nine bass weighing 34-13. Fishing in only his second Open, the Quakertown, Pa., angler relied on a green pumpkin football jig all three days to catch bass in depths of 6 to 15 feet on boulders along large flats.

Schmitt also earned the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Thursday. Nicholas Sokolowski won the Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250 for finishing as the top co-angler on Thursday.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 on the pro side went to Molineaux, with a 6-9 fish. Robin Roystan, Bath, N.H., weighed in a 5-6 bass to earn the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award in the co-angler division.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Adrian Avena earned the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $500 for being the highest placing angler using A.R.E. products.

Schmitt earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $500 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible, and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

Central Open Has Pennant Race Pressure

Central Open Has Pennant Race Pressure

[print_link]

SHREVEPORT/BOSSIER CITY, La. — Pressure builds every year, like a Major League Baseball pennant race, when the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Series schedule continues after the conclusion of the Bassmaster Elite Series season.

The Central Open on the Red River, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, represents the first game of a season-ending Louisiana doubleheader. The third and final Central Open, originally scheduled for February but canceled due to high water, will be held Oct. 27-29 at Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin.

“To fish these next two tournaments, it’s almost like an old school team tournament,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Cliff Crochet of Pierre Part, La.

Crochet failed to qualify for the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro through the Elite Series. These final Central Opens are his only avenues to the Classic.

“For me, there’s really nothing involved except for winning,” he said. “It’s kind of refreshing.”

The floods that roared through this area in March, and then again in August, have created an unfamiliar playing field, even for the many Louisiana residents entered in this anticipated 182-boat field pairing pros and co-anglers.

“It’s different because of the floods,” Crochet said. “The river has a new personality.”

Elite Series pro Stephen Browning of Hot Springs, Ark., liked the old personality of the Red River. Two of his three B.A.S.S. victories have come on the Red River, in the 2013 and 2014 Central Opens. But both of those tournaments were in April, so Browning was expecting a different scenario this time anyway.

“I felt like it was going to fish a lot differently just because it’s fall instead of spring,” Browning said. “It may help me. Instead of fishing my history, I’ll fish the conditions.”

Teb Jones of Hattiesburg, Miss., finished second by 1 ounce to Skylar Hamilton in the first Central Open, which was held on the Arkansas River at Muskogee, Okla., in early June. Jones has spent a few practice days on the Red River, and he confirms what everyone suspects — the Red River is different now.

“The water looks great,” Jones said. “The water clarity is good. But there’s a whole lot of new stuff that wasn’t there before. Of the areas I’d fished before, it wasn’t as predictable as I expected it to be.

“I don’t expect it to be a slugfest. I think if you consistently catch 12 to 13 pounds for three days you’re going to be in great shape, based on what I’ve seen so far.”

When Browning won in the spring of 2013 his three-day total was 40 pounds, 10 ounces. In his 2014 win, it was 44-3.

The pro field is dominated by Louisiana anglers, as you might expect with the Central Open tournament schedule featuring two events in their home state. Many of the competitors’ names aren’t well-known outside the region, but Crochet is familiar with them.

“There’s 60 or 70 people from Louisiana fishing the Central Opens (on the pro side),” Crochet said. “Some of them I’ve been fishing against for years. They aren’t slouches.”

Provided he or she fishes all three Central Opens, the winner receives a berth in the 2017 Classic, which will be held at Texas’ Lake Conroe. With the Elite Series concluded, the Southern Opens division long over, and the Northern Opens concluding Sept. 23, the focus of the Bassmaster tournament world falls on Louisiana now.

It’s a good, old-fashioned pennant race that’s going down to the wire.
Anglers will take off each day at 7 a.m. CT at the Red River South Marina. Weigh-ins will be held at 3 p.m. at the Red River South Marina the first two days, with the final weigh-in on Saturday taking place at the Bass Pro Shops in Bossier City, La., at 4 p.m.

REVIEW: Old Town Loon – K.F.B

0

20 years ago Old Town Canoe launched the Loon, a kayak that changed the way people thought about taking to the water. This year Old Town Canoe changed the way people thought of a kayak. The Loons re-introduction could be called the most modern kayak on the water today in my opinion.

Old Town Loon ReviewMeeting today’s demands from kayakers and anglers Old Town has introduced a removable dash that has a USB connector that can be powered with a 12-volt power supply to keep your phone, camera or blue tooth device going for hours. The compartment is waterproof and has a holder that has a bungee to hold your phone securely. Convenient trays for the angler and at bottle holder underneath and a recessed holder on top.  This tray easily removes by just flipping two levers to the unlock position and off it comes and just as easily installs. Once locked I actually was able to lift up on it and pick the kayak up without the dashboard coming unattached or loosening.

The Classic Bass Fishing Hook Redefined

Trapper Tackle lifts the lid on the new Offset Wide Gap Hook

[print_link]

Palm Beach Gardens, FL (September 22, 2016) – Few pieces of terminal tackle SCREAM bass fishing like the offset wide gap hook. This perennial, versatile lip-piercer serves as the foundation for a wide variety of soft plastic delivery systems – such as Texas and Carolina rigs – and is equally effective when adorned with a fluke, Senko, topwater toad and a myriad of other offerings.

While garden-variety offset wide gap hooks are typically dressed with soft baits for snag-less presentations, they are also associated with two persistent problems that plague every angler. Firstly, is the frustration that comes with the task of adjusting baits that slide out of position.  Whether it happens as a result of contact with cover or occurs from the forces applied when casting and retrieving lures, every angler knows that when lures aren’t rigged straight, they don’t swim straight.

Secondly, once a fish is hooked on any variety of round bend hook, Big Mama can readily leverage herself against the weight of the lure and make the hook rotate out of her mouth or simply slide past the barb.  Every angler has lost fish after the hook set and experienced the agony that follows.

The virtuoso hook designers at Trapper Tackle have cultured a unique solution to these pervasive problems, revealing a pointy panacea that promises to revolutionize fishing with all manner of baits.

Welcome the Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook from Trapper Tackle. Forged from quality hi-carbon steel and sporting both a traditional Z-bend below the line tie and a sticky-sharp Piercing Point™, the Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook redefines bass fishing expectations by incorporating the patent-protected Trapper Box™. This unique set of right-angle bends at the bottom of the hook locks lures in place, and perhaps more importantly, locks the fish in place by eliminating the pivot point on the hook and limiting the fish’s ability to leverage itself out of the Trapper Box™.  This ingenious change in hook geometry not only means that anglers will spend less time re-rigging, but they will also experience a higher percentage of fish landed.  For the recreational angler that means a more enjoyable fishing experience, for the tournament angler increased efficiency and productivity on the water means everything.

Trapper Tackle pro Vince Hurtado, a veteran of the Bassmaster ELITE Series and California Delta bass legend, offers some field-tested insights on picking the right Trapper Hook: “The standard-gauge Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook shines when conditions call for presentations made on lighter line. When anglers are faced with clear water or high pressure conditions, or the mood of the fish calls for smaller baits, they should turn to the Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook.  I rig up with 12-lb test monofilament or fluorocarbon depending on the depth, and then dress my Trapper with any number of baits including custom hand poured worms, flat reapers, zipper style grubs and small to midsize creature baits.”

Indeed, the new Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook was designed for full compatibility with the broadest possible selection of soft plastic baits, and sizing matches industry standards so there’s no need to adjust your hook size preferences.  Do you fish Senkos on a 4/0 hook? Choose a 4/0 Offset Wide Gap Trapper Hook and fish with the confidence that your bait is locked in the Trapper Box and your making perfect presentations, cast after cast.

Anglers will find the Trapper Offset Wide Gap Hook in five sizes ranging from 1/0 to 5/0 and two wire gauges (Standard & X-Heavy), in packs of 4, 5 or 6, depending on size and wire gauge (MSRP $4.99) and in Pro Packs of 25 (MSRP $17.19-$27.99), with retail and online availability in December 2016. Until then, visit us at http://TrapperTackle.com to sign up for free samples and to learn more about game-changing Trapper Hooks from Trapper Tackle.

Bryan Schmitt Climbs Into First In Bassmaster Open On Lake Champlain

Bryan Schmitt Climbs Into First In Bassmaster Open On Lake Champlain

[print_link]

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Bryan Schmitt had planned on catching a mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth bass on Lake Champlain, but it was a limit of five smallmouth that nudged him into the second-round lead in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open.

When the lake’s surface turned slick in the afternoon, Schmitt knew what to do. He knew Lake Champlain smallmouth liked to feed on calm, sunny days.

“I leaned on the smallmouth as hard as I could, and that really helped me out,” said Schmitt, who took over the lead with 40 pounds, 15 ounces. “I had a lot of fun out there today. Hopefully, I’ll have one more day of it.”

The Deale, Md., angler caught a five-fish limit of smallmouth bass weighing 20-6, almost exactly the same weight as his mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth from Wednesday, which totaled 20-9.

The first morning, Schmitt concentrated on largemouth and caught a couple of keepers but had to switch over to a smallmouth pattern to complete his limit. Today, he decided to stick with brown bass, especially when the weather turned favorable for a smallmouth bite.

Both days he has keyed on three spots, and he said he never saw another competitor’s boat. “I really sat on those spots a long time and tried to work them the best I could,” said the 35-year-old Chesapeake Bay charter guide. “Tomorrow, I can go lean on the smallmouth again the rest of the day. I am hoping a couple of things that I am doing will work because there shouldn’t be anybody there.”

A couple of missed fish plagued first-day leader Jesse Tacoronte, who slipped into second place with 40-8.

“I jumped two 4 1/2-pounders off,” Tacoronte said. “I had one of them in my hand, and it jumped over my hand and broke the line.” The 49-year-old owner of Enigma Fishing Co. used different baits and a different approach to catch smallmouth today. He had most of his 19-5 limit by 9:38 a.m.

The Orlando, Fla., angler plans to focus on two spots that are loaded with smallmouth for the final day.  “I haven’t seen a single boat anywhere near my water,” he said. “So who knows how many hundreds of thousands of fish I have to myself. With smallies, you can throw into the same spot a hundred times and catch 40 fish.”

Rounding out the Top 5 in the pro division are Chris Molineaux, Hope Valley, R.I., third place, 40-4; Wil Hardy II, Harlem, Ga., fourth, 38-14; and Alton Jones Jr., Lorena, Texas, fifth, 38-5.

Drop-shotting with one of his own lures helped Nicholas Sokolowski, Brewerton, N.Y., move into first place in the co-angler division with 23-4.  The 22-year-old construction worker and owner of Soco Baits caught three keepers weighing 12-5 today with a Soco Baits Large Fry, a 2 1/2-inch minnow bait that he rigged on a drop shot.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass award is currently held by Chris Molineaux of Hope Valley, R.I., after catching a 6 pound, 9 ounce bass Thursday.

The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau (www.goadirondack.com) is the host for this week’s Northern Open. The final-day launch and weigh-in featuring the Top 12 anglers in the pro and co-angler divisions will be held at Dock Street Landing at 5 Dock Street in Plattsburgh.

The ‘G-Man’ Unmasked: Bass Pro Bares His Soul

Humminbird® pro Gerald Swindle talks brass tacks about 2016 Bassmaster Elite AOY

Racine, WI (September 21, 2016) – It’s the story of a win that almost wasn’t…

Alabama’s Gerald “G-Man” Swindle says there were points in the 2016 season when he struggled, like the first two days of the 2016 Toyota Bassmaster Elite Angler of the Year Championship on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake.

Still, the funniest man in bass fishing persevered… a little voice told him to follow his heart. Or maybe it was the note his wife Lulu puts on his brown bag lunch each tournament day. Regardless, on Day 3 of the 2016 Toyota Bassmaster AOY Championship the G-Man turned on his Humminbirds and tried to have some fun.

“The key to success in bass fishing is fishing because you love it and have fun,” says Swindle.

Now a two-time Bassmaster AOY champion, the G-Man talks brass tacks about his season and fishing philosophy in this candid video.

Congratulations, G-Man, on a great season!

Two-year BASS Elite pro wins 2016 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship with a little help from Humminbird®

Racine, WI (September 21, 2016): Bassmaster Senior Editor Thomas Allen says the turnout at the recent 2016 Toyota Angler of the Year Championship on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake was “probably our best ever at an Elite event, second only to the Classic.”

The enthusiasm was contagious. While droves cheered on their favorite pros, many more (even state officials) closely monitored the numbers and quality of smallmouth bass produced by the sport’s top anglers.

The results? Incredible.

Following myriad big bass caught during practice, by Day 1 word was out, confirming what many Midwestern bass anglers already know: Mille Lacs Lake smallmouth bass are giants, with high numbers of five-pound-plus fish.

Four-time Bassmaster Classic Champion Kevin VanDam and Bassmaster emcee Dave Mercer extolled Mille Lacs as the world’s finest big smallmouth bass fishery, good press for the struggling region as state officials continue working toward walleye management solutions.

Jaws dropped as anglers started carrying 25-pound bags to the scales. “Had the fish grouped up into fall patterns, we could’ve seen 30-pound mega-bags,” says tournament champion Seth Feider, a Bloomington, Minnesota, native. “There are times when you can go out and catch 50 fish all over five pounds. When Mille Lacs is good, guys will be throwing back five pounders. They definitely live here. This place is full of five, six, seven pound smallies.”

Still riding the wave of a second-place finish at the Plano Bassmaster Elite event in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the two-year pro made a stellar performance at Mille Lacs, weighing 25-8 on Day 1, 24-11 on Day 2, and 26-2 on Day 3 for a 76-5 total. Feider trumped Humminbird pro Brent Ehrler’s 69-13 by over six pounds.

“I thought I blew my season last month on the Potomac. I really didn’t know if I’d be fishing next year. So I definitely went into La Crosse with a way different attitude. The poor finish at Potomac was a blessing in disguise. Now I’m fishing how I fish locally in little 50 boat tournaments, running around and trying to cut everybody’s head off and win the thing,” says Feider.

He continues: “My first year and half in the Elites were rough. I was definitely lacking confidence. These are the best fishermen in the world and it’s a little intimidating. It started changing for me the last two tournaments. I came in with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude and started for fish aggressively for big fish instead of a limit. Fish for 50th place and you’re going to finish 80th.”

Lucky for Feider, he finished in 50th place, the cut-off to fish the Mille Lacs AOY. One place lower and this Cinderella story would’ve come to a very abrupt end.

Finding Fish

Feider’s BassCat is rigged with three Humminbird 1199ci HD SI combos—one at the bow, two in the console. “Side Imaging was the deal. I was looking for giant boulders. Mille Lacs has rock from one end to the other. If you stopped everywhere you saw rocks it’d take you a month to fish the lake. My deal was finding super-big boulders in 15 to 20 feet with fish on them. And sometimes the fish were hidden, so I’d just drop on big rocks. The fish were in transition from summer spots, not quite on the fall stuff yet,” says Feider.

While idling, he’d mark waypoints on big boulders that appeared on his Side Imaging screen, which also appeared on his Humminbird LakeMaster Minnesota map view of 1-foot HD lake contours.

“Then I’d go back with my 2D Sonar to look for fish and drop right on their heads. You had to put it right on the edge of the big boulders with steep sides. Hit the boulder top or two feet off to the side and you wouldn’t get bit. You had to put your bait right where the side of the rock meets the bottom.”

Not only did Feider have to put his bait spot-on-the-spot, the abundance of crawfish in the system made catching fish difficult. Patiently dead-sticking his drop-shot for minutes at a time proved key to catching some of his biggest fish.

“Wasn’t like I dropped down and they ate it right away. They aren’t feeding real aggressively right now. There’s so much food down there … if you dove down you’d see something like 10 crawfish on every rock. They’re not going to run something down to eat it, especially the big ones. They’re big, fat and lazy. Patience was key. It was almost like bed fishing. I kept the bait in their face until they were eating just to get it out of their face.”

He continues: “There was one six-pounder I caught on Day 3 that I saw on my Humminbird… I dropped to him, backed up the boat and was shaking it for what seemed like forever. I was just about to reel up, but I motored up to him again, looked at my graph and could see him still sitting there. So I backed up again and about a minute later he bit. I spent a good five minutes on that fish.”

There’s much to be learned from the nuances to Feider’s drop-shot routine. For example, use of Sufix hi-vis braid, which allows him to monitor where his line is at all times, especially in wind and waves. Attached to the main line is a 16- to 18-foot 6-pound Sufix fluorocarbon leader, to which he ties in a #2 VMC Neko Rig hook about 12 inches up and impales a 4-inch stick worm. The light-weight leader and ½-ounce cylindrical VMC tungsten drop shot weight allows him to get down quickly to the fish he sees on his Humminbird 2D sonar and also prevents snagging.

Minnesota Pride

Reflecting on his win, Feider is honored to keep the AOY Championship trophy in Minnesota. “It was fun to go fish my favorite lake and show the world what it’s capable of doing.”

But he has some concerns for what many are now calling the greatest smallmouth fishery in the country.

“We’ve gotta protect it. I’d like to see it go back to catch and release. I don’t know if that’s possible. They have to get the walleye deal figured out, but keeping and filleting 20- to 25-year-old smallmouths is going to end badly. After these fish are dead and gone we’re going to have a big void.”

Asked about the 2017 season, Feider says he’s going to continue fishing every tournament like he’s got nothing to lose.

Not a bad idea, it’s working out nicely for the young gun.

Tacoronte Takes The Lead At Champlain Open

Tacoronte Takes The Lead At Champlain Open

[print_link]
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Guessing his primary spot would be taken, Jesse Tacoronte went to his Plan B spot and took over the pro-division lead at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on Lake Champlain.

“Since I was the last boat (during takeoff), I figured I would go to my worst water first, but it turned out we were done there by 9 o’clock,” Tacoronte said. The Orlando, Fla., angler quickly caught his limit of smallmouth bass and culled to accumulate 21 pounds, 3 ounces by 9 a.m.

“I didn’t expect that quality of fish to be in that one spot because that was my ‘B’ water,” he said. The rest of the day Tacoronte “dinked around” because he wanted to save the best spots he found in practice for the rest of the tournament.

“God willing those spots will be there for me tomorrow,” he said.

Tacoronte found a spot loaded with bait during practice Monday, and he noticed the baitfish were still there on the first competition day.

“As long as the bait stays there the big fish will be there,” he said. Even though he will be the first boat out in Thursday’s takeoff, he plans to start again on his “B” spot since it produced so well.

Despite a long drive to reach Champlain and limited practice time, Adrian Avena still managed to catch a 20-15 limit to move into second place. Avena and his dad drove 30 hours from the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. They made it to Champlain on Tuesday so the Bassmaster Elite Series pro could practice for four hours before the Open.

Avena relied on a junk fishing pattern that produced a victory for the Vineland, N.J., pro at Champlain in a Rayovac tournament in 2011. “It’s a grind,” said Avena, who had a mixed limit of smallmouth and largemouth.

“I had a couple of really good largemouth bites and that‘s what you need out here are those kickers to put you over the top.”

The Elite Series pro had about a 10-pound limit by 10 a.m. and then started catching kicker largemouth. “From there on every hour I got a 4-pound-plus bite,” he said.

The rest of the Top 5 contenders in the pro division are Bryan Schmitt, Deale, Md., third place, 20-9; Scott Pellegrin, Eau Claire, Wis., fourth, 19-13; and Brett Carnright, Plattsburgh, N.Y., fifth, 19-9.

Paired with Elite Series pro Carl Jocumsen, Robin Roystan caught a three-fish limit weighing 11-15 to take over the lead in the co-angler division. The 54-year-old retired logger from Bath, N.H., frequently fishes Champlain and was happy Jocumsen allowed him to catch bass on his favorite Champlain lure. “I got to fish my jig all day long,” said Roystan, who weighed in two largemouth and a smallmouth.

Hosting this week’s Northern Open is The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau (www.goadirondack.com). The launches and weigh-ins each day will be held at Dock Street Landing at 5 Dock Street in Plattsburgh.

As I go through some old footage, I often go through stuff that I overlooked at the time. I am going to start sharing some those and I hope that you all enjoy them. I have a few more from old videos of Austin and some new ones that I will be sharing soon.
