Early Fall Bass Fishing Baits and Techniques by Greg Blanchard

Alrighty guys, this is probably one of the longest videos I’ve uploaded but I wanted to include most of the content from my day on the water. I had full intentions on making this an “Early Fall Bass Fishing” video, and it is, but I definitely ended up fishing a way that I did not anticipate (mainly due to the floating grass throughout the river). That aside, the fact of the matter is that the bass are grouping up here in New York at least and have started to move shallow and are chasing/feeding on bait in anticipation for the cooler months to come.

HIXSON, Tenn. (Sept. 19, 2016) – FLW Tour pro Alex Davis of Albertville, Alabama, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 10 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division Super Tournament on Lake Chickamauga, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 28 pounds, 6 ounces. For his victory, Davis earned $8,006.

“I spent the tournament targeting smaller, isolated grass mats on the lower end of the lake,” said Davis, who earned his third win in FLW competition. “In the fall, on a grass lake, you’re going to win by either flipping, punching or throwing a frog, and that’s what I did.

On Saturday, I caught four keepers by 9 a.m. on a Bluegill-colored Jackall Iobee Frog out of a 40- by 40-yard mat,” Davis continued. “After that, I caught my fifth punching a mat with a black-and-blue Jackall Archelon. I probably had 15 pounds by noon.”

Davis said he made the same milk run on Sunday, using the same baits on the lower end of the lake.

“I caught a keeper on the Iobee, and then two more from a punching spot with the Archelon,” said Davis. “By 1:30 p.m., I only had four in the boat and a storm was on the way. I decided to run back to my frogging area for one more chance. I threw out the Iobee and a fish blew up on it. That was my fifth, and I headed into the scales.”

CLEWISTON, Fla. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Robert Crosnoe of Inverness, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 9 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Gator Division Super Tournament on Lake Okeechobee, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 43 pounds, 13 ounces. For his win, Crosnoe took home $8,254.

“I caught all of my fish flipping a Hematoma-colored Reaction Innovations Kinky Beaver,” said Crosnoe, who earned his third career BFL win as a boater in FLW competition. “I had it rigged with a 1½-ounce tungsten weight on a 7’8” Fitzgerald Titan HD rod. I was also using PermaLine Braid Paint from Fitzgerald Fishing. I was painting my braid from the hook to 4 feet up the line, camouflaging my line. I believe the Braid Paint was the difference maker.”

Crosnoe said that he flipped super heavy cover in several areas at the very back of Harney Pond. He estimated that he caught around 40 fish throughout the two-day event but only one area produced his bigger fish. Crosnoe caught four 7-pounders from the same spot.

“I caught two 7-pounders on Saturday and two more on Sunday,” Crosnoe said. “It was a ¼-mile stretch of the muddiest, slimiest, deadest water that you could find. There was some hyacinth that had recently been sprayed and was blown in. The bluegill were popping in the hyacinth and the big bass were there eating the bluegill.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:           Robert Crosnoe, Inverness, Fla., 10 bass, 43-13, $8,254

2nd:          George Kapiton, Inverness, Fla., 10 bass, 37-9, $3,627

4th:           Kyle Monti, Okeechobee, Fla., 10 bass, 36-4, $1,693

5th:           Mason Boylan, Melbourne, Fla., 10 bass, 34-1, $1,451

6th:           Gary Milicevic, Labelle, Fla., 10 bass, 33-13, $2,625

Lovely wins co-angler title

GALLATIN, Tenn. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Michael Delvisco of Dandridge, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 1 ounce, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Music City Division Super Tournament on Old Hickory Lake, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 28 pounds, 14 ounces. For his win, Delvisco took home $4,037.

On Saturday I started shallow in the back of East Fork Station Camp Creek using a white Z-Man ChatterBait with a Yamamoto Shad Shape Worm,” said Delvisco, who earned his first win in BFL competition. “I caught some keepers, and then went out deep to fish mid-lake drops.”

Delvisco said he topped off Saturday’s limit using the ChatterBait and a VMC Swinging Rugby Jig. He said he wrangled a 5-pounder – the heaviest bass weighed in the event – toward the end of the day.

On Sunday I went straight to my stretch of drops instead of going shallow,” said Delvisco. “I returned periodically to the most productive hole, which was a little ditch on a drop, and caught four good keepers. I had to be patient. I only had five bites Sunday compared to 12 the day before.”

Delvisco said he built his final-day limit using a football–head jig rigged with a crawdad, and the Swinging Rugby Jig with a green-pumpkin Yamamoto Creature Bait trailer.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Michael Delvisco, Dandridge, Tenn., 10 bass, 28-14, $4,037

GROVE, Okla. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Benjamin King of Garnett, Kansas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 2 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division Super Tournament on Grand Lake, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 7 ounces. King pocketed $8,349 for his victory.

King said he split his tournament between two patterns – dragging a worm near flats with docks and flipping a creature bait to willows. He said his areas were spread out between Sailboat Bridge and Drowning Creek.

“I used a Mesu Baits Shaky-Head Jig with a worm on the flats, and I flipped a green-pumpkin Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver in the willows,” said King, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I dragged the worm on the bottom from 6 inches to 2 feet of water.”

King said he moved a lot, fishing 15 to 20 areas each day of the event.

“I kept running because I wasn’t catching much,” said King. “The first day I had five keeper bites, and the second day I had six.”

King said his Ardent Apex Elite reel and 7’6” Medium-Heavy Ardent Edge rod were essential to his victory.

“The Ardent equipment was really the difference maker for me,” said King. “It loaded up well, even with that little bait. I felt like I could cast a mile. If I saw one blow up on the flats, I was able to reach it.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

LA CROSSE’S BRUEGGEN WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE GREAT LAKES DIVISION FINALE ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER PRESENTED BY MINN KOTA

Leno wins co-angler title

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Local angler Mike Brueggen of La Crosse, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 5 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Great Lakes Division Super Tournament on the Mississippi River presented by Minn Kota, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds, 6 ounces. For his win, Brueggen took home $8,011.

“I fished the majority of the tournament in Pool No. 8, but also a little bit in Pool No. 9,” said Brueggen, who earned his fourth career BFL win. “I started out the tournament fishing for smallmouth, but by 10 a.m. on Saturday I scrapped that plan. In certain areas of the river as the weeds die off it exposes a clean, sandy bottom. I ended up targeting largemouth in those areas.

“My numbers were good – I caught between 20 and 40 fish each day,” Brueggen continued. “The majority of them were 2-pounders, but I caught a couple of big ones each day.”

Brueggen said that he caught his fish on three baits – a ¼-ounce swimjig with a yellow, silver and blue-colored twister tail, a Kureiji buzzbait and a protoype frog from Kureiji.

“The frog really is a prototype – I have the only two that currently exist,” said Brueggen. “This win should help speed up the release process, though.

“I think the key to my win was just fishing with confidence,” Brueggen went on to say. “I’ve been fishing on this river for more than 15 years and I didn’t even figure out the clean bottom pattern until mid-way through that first day. When you completely scrap the pattern that you have planned, it takes confidence in your abilities.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:           Mike Brueggen, La Crosse, Wis., 10 bass, 32-6, $6,011 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:          Jason Howland, Albert Lea, Minn., 10 bass, 32-0, $3,006

3rd:          Chris Aswegan, Tiffin, Iowa, 10 bass, 31-8, $2,827

4th:           Brandon Gann, Sparta, Wis., 10 bass, 31-4, $1,603

5th:           Brian Fitzpatrick, La Crosse, Wis., 10 bass, 30-3, $1,502

6th:           Jeff Ritter, Prairie du Chien, Wis., 10 bass, 29-7, $1,202

7th:           Devin Teigen, Eau Claire, Wis., 10 bass, 29-4, $1,002

SENECA, S.C. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Andy Burgess of Greenville, South Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 14 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division Super Tournament on Lake Keowee, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 27 pounds, 3 ounces. For his win, Burgess took home $4,931.

“I caught seven keepers on Day One fishing mid-lake docks,” said Burgess, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I probably hit 40 of them. They were shallow and on sandy flats. It was sunny, so bass were seeking shade under them. That was crucial – the docks had to be on sandy flats and providing shade.”

Burgess said he used a bream-colored swimjig, and caught his entire limit from the docks.

On Sunday I started running the same pattern, but I couldn’t get a bite,” said Burgess. “I proceeded to the north end of the lake and ran along banks with chunk and natural rock using a bream-colored Greenfish Tackle Prop Bait.”

Burgess said he hit 40 to 50 areas, stopping to fish 30-yard stretches before moving on.

“It was cloudy, so the bass weren’t positioned and it was hard to pinpoint them,” said Burgess. “That’s why I had to keep running. I ended up catching 10 keepers.”

WEST FRANKFORT’S SHORAGA WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE SHELBYVILLE

Dobill wins co-angler title

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Dan Shoraga of West Frankfort, Illinois, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 1 ounce, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division Super Tournament on Lake Shelbyville, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 23 pounds, 14 ounces. For his win, Shoraga took home $8,204.

“I caught my fish this week in areas around the State Park,” said Shoraga, who earned his second career win in BFL competition. “I would start my mornings fishing a rock pile in Eagle Creek and would fish my way down to the Finley area. I would leave the rock pile between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and fish laydowns for the rest of the day.

“I didn’t have many bites,” Shoraga continued. “I only had 7 or 8 keepers on Day One, and only 5 keepers on Day Two. The rock pile that I would start on was a community hole, but I had a good boat draw and was one of the first boats there. Then I had around 4 or 5 different laydowns that I would cycle through.”

Shoraga said that he caught the majority of his fish on a Texas-rigged black and blue Yamamoto Senko, but also managed to put a few fish in the boat with a green-pumpkin-colored tube as well.

“I think the Senko was the key for me,” Shoraga went on to say. “I was fishing around a dozen or so other boats and they were not catching them as good as I was. I think the Senko was the difference.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:           Dan Shoraga, West Frankfort, Ill., 10 bass, 23-14, $6,204 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
