GROVE, Okla. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Benjamin King of Garnett, Kansas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 2 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division Super Tournament on Grand Lake, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 7 ounces. King pocketed $8,349 for his victory.

King said he split his tournament between two patterns – dragging a worm near flats with docks and flipping a creature bait to willows. He said his areas were spread out between Sailboat Bridge and Drowning Creek.

“I used a Mesu Baits Shaky-Head Jig with a worm on the flats, and I flipped a green-pumpkin Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver in the willows,” said King, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I dragged the worm on the bottom from 6 inches to 2 feet of water.”

King said he moved a lot, fishing 15 to 20 areas each day of the event.

“I kept running because I wasn’t catching much,” said King. “The first day I had five keeper bites, and the second day I had six.”

King said his Ardent Apex Elite reel and 7’6” Medium-Heavy Ardent Edge rod were essential to his victory.

“The Ardent equipment was really the difference maker for me,” said King. “It loaded up well, even with that little bait. I felt like I could cast a mile. If I saw one blow up on the flats, I was able to reach it.”

LA CROSSE’S BRUEGGEN WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE GREAT LAKES DIVISION FINALE ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER PRESENTED BY MINN KOTA

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Local angler Mike Brueggen of La Crosse, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 5 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Great Lakes Division Super Tournament on the Mississippi River presented by Minn Kota, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds, 6 ounces. For his win, Brueggen took home $8,011.

“I fished the majority of the tournament in Pool No. 8, but also a little bit in Pool No. 9,” said Brueggen, who earned his fourth career BFL win. “I started out the tournament fishing for smallmouth, but by 10 a.m. on Saturday I scrapped that plan. In certain areas of the river as the weeds die off it exposes a clean, sandy bottom. I ended up targeting largemouth in those areas.

“My numbers were good – I caught between 20 and 40 fish each day,” Brueggen continued. “The majority of them were 2-pounders, but I caught a couple of big ones each day.”

Brueggen said that he caught his fish on three baits – a ¼-ounce swimjig with a yellow, silver and blue-colored twister tail, a Kureiji buzzbait and a protoype frog from Kureiji.

“The frog really is a prototype – I have the only two that currently exist,” said Brueggen. “This win should help speed up the release process, though.

“I think the key to my win was just fishing with confidence,” Brueggen went on to say. “I’ve been fishing on this river for more than 15 years and I didn’t even figure out the clean bottom pattern until mid-way through that first day. When you completely scrap the pattern that you have planned, it takes confidence in your abilities.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:           Mike Brueggen, La Crosse, Wis., 10 bass, 32-6, $6,011 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:          Jason Howland, Albert Lea, Minn., 10 bass, 32-0, $3,006

3rd:          Chris Aswegan, Tiffin, Iowa, 10 bass, 31-8, $2,827

4th:           Brandon Gann, Sparta, Wis., 10 bass, 31-4, $1,603

5th:           Brian Fitzpatrick, La Crosse, Wis., 10 bass, 30-3, $1,502

6th:           Jeff Ritter, Prairie du Chien, Wis., 10 bass, 29-7, $1,202

7th:           Devin Teigen, Eau Claire, Wis., 10 bass, 29-4, $1,002

8th:           Jeff Benson, Holmen, Wis., 10 bass, 28-7, $902

3rd:          Rick Ragner, La Crosse, Wis., eight bass, 17-2, $1,004

4th:           Chad Smith, Davenport, Iowa, six bass, 17-0, $901

5th:           Ben Fisher, Waterloo, Iowa, six bass, 16-15, $1,013

6th:           Benny Stutzman, Caledonia, Minn., six bass, 15-5, $551

7th:           Dan McAdams, Nekoosa, Wis., seven bass, 15-0, $501

Swaim wins co-angler title

SENECA, S.C. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Andy Burgess of Greenville, South Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 14 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division Super Tournament on Lake Keowee, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 27 pounds, 3 ounces. For his win, Burgess took home $4,931.

“I caught seven keepers on Day One fishing mid-lake docks,” said Burgess, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I probably hit 40 of them. They were shallow and on sandy flats. It was sunny, so bass were seeking shade under them. That was crucial – the docks had to be on sandy flats and providing shade.”

Burgess said he used a bream-colored swimjig, and caught his entire limit from the docks.

On Sunday I started running the same pattern, but I couldn’t get a bite,” said Burgess. “I proceeded to the north end of the lake and ran along banks with chunk and natural rock using a bream-colored Greenfish Tackle Prop Bait.”

Burgess said he hit 40 to 50 areas, stopping to fish 30-yard stretches before moving on.

“It was cloudy, so the bass weren’t positioned and it was hard to pinpoint them,” said Burgess. “That’s why I had to keep running. I ended up catching 10 keepers.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Andy Burgess, Greenville, S.C., 10 bass, 27-3, $4,931

3rd:          Brock Taylor, Pendleton, S.C., 10 bass, 24-10, $1,644

4th:          Greg Glouse, Liberty, S.C., 10 bass, 23-13, $1,151

5th:          Jeremy Strong, Elberton, Ga., 10 bass, 23-0, $1,286

6th:          Greg Willimon, Pickens, S.C., 10 bass, 22-7, $904

7th:          Tra Dumit, Greenville, S.C., nine bass, 21-4, $822

WEST FRANKFORT’S SHORAGA WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE SHELBYVILLE

Dobill wins co-angler title

[print_link]

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 19, 2016) – Dan Shoraga of West Frankfort, Illinois, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 1 ounce, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division Super Tournament on Lake Shelbyville, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 23 pounds, 14 ounces. For his win, Shoraga took home $8,204.

“I caught my fish this week in areas around the State Park,” said Shoraga, who earned his second career win in BFL competition. “I would start my mornings fishing a rock pile in Eagle Creek and would fish my way down to the Finley area. I would leave the rock pile between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and fish laydowns for the rest of the day.

“I didn’t have many bites,” Shoraga continued. “I only had 7 or 8 keepers on Day One, and only 5 keepers on Day Two. The rock pile that I would start on was a community hole, but I had a good boat draw and was one of the first boats there. Then I had around 4 or 5 different laydowns that I would cycle through.”

Shoraga said that he caught the majority of his fish on a Texas-rigged black and blue Yamamoto Senko, but also managed to put a few fish in the boat with a green-pumpkin-colored tube as well.

“I think the Senko was the key for me,” Shoraga went on to say. “I was fishing around a dozen or so other boats and they were not catching them as good as I was. I think the Senko was the difference.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:           Dan Shoraga, West Frankfort, Ill., 10 bass, 23-14, $6,204 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

Gerald Swindle Wins Second Angler Of The Year Title At Mille Lacs Bassmaster Championship

[print_link]

ONAMIA, Minn. — Gerald Swindle of Guntersville, Ala., clinched his second Angler of the Year title since 2004 at the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota.

A total purse of $1 million was paid out to the Top 50 Bassmaster Elite Series pros, along with berths to the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro. Swindle collected $100,000, and the remaining 49 anglers earned shares of the remaining $900,000.

The Top 39 anglers at this event will be competing in the Classic next March on Lake Conroe near Houston, Texas.

Swindle, a 15-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier, struggled to catch competitive limits on Mille Lacs Lake during the first two days of the championship, but he figured out the fish on the final day of the championship today, bringing in a five-fish limit of smallmouth bass that weighed 22 pounds.

“The last thing I wanted was to win this title without catching the kind of fish that Mille Lacs is known for producing,” Swindle said. “I left the docks this morning with the full intention of going out and catching them how I wanted to catch them. I threw a jerkbait and a vibrating jig and had an awesome day. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut.”

Swindle said a 7-pound largemouth he caught during the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala., in late April was the turning point for his season.

“When I caught that fish, I knew that I was back in the AOY race, and I decided right then and there to ride that momentum to the end of the season,” he said. “Of course it was long from over at that point, but looking back, that fish changed the season for me.”

An emotional Swindle, with his wife LeAnn by his side, explained how humbled and grateful he is for the opportunity to earn a title of this magnitude.

“My parents were in the crowd to watch me win AOY,” Swindle said. “And my wife has stuck by me, through thick and thin — she’s kept my head in the game and helped me stay focused when it was most important. I’m so thankful for the support I receive from her and my family. This is a team sport for the Swindles, and it’s a victory we all get to celebrate together.”

While Swindle was surrounded by media, LeAnn talked about how much this title means when compared to the 2004 AOY title.

“Honestly, I really had no idea back in 2004 how hard it was to win Angler of the Year, and how highly respected the title is,” she said. “He puts his heart and soul into this sport, and not because he has to, but because he loves it. We’re so blessed to be here, and no one is more proud of him than I am.”

The objective of any bass tournament is to catch the most and the biggest bass, but this tournament was won by points accrued throughout the season.

However, Seth Feider of Bloomington, Minn., wowed his hometown crowd after producing an enormous limit of smallmouth bass that weighed 26-2 — his largest limit across the three days, and the best performance of the tournament.

“After the Potomac River event in August, I wasn’t sure fishing this tournament was going to be a possibility,” Feider said. “It’s really a dream come true, and I’m very proud of Minnesota for showing off the best smallmouth bass fishery in the world.”

Last week, Feider was able to make a solid comeback during the Plano Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing out of La Crosse, where he finished in second place.

“To beat these guys anywhere is an accomplishment not to be overlooked, but to do that at home on two fisheries I care deeply about means the world to me,” he said. “Having my friends and family here made it even sweeter.”

Feider caught all of his bass on a drop shot rig near large rocks. He said the key was being patient and fishing slowly.

“There were times I’d leave my bait on the bottom for several minutes and not move it,” he said. “It took time, but thanks to my Humminbird electronics, I knew the fish were there.”

Rounding out the Top 5 in AOY points were Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas, (881); Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., (852); Jacob Powroznik of Port Haywood, Va, (830); and Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., (830).

The Top 5 in weight at Mille Lacs included: Feider (76-5); Brent Ehrler of Newport Beach, Calif., (69-13); Dave Lefebre of Erie, Pa, (67-12); Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., (67-5); and James Elam of Tulsa, Okla., (67-3).

Feider earned the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500 for leading on the second day.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $1,500 was presented to Ehrler for weighing in the overall biggest bass of the event — a 6-10 bass caught on Sunday.

Ehrler earned the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $1,000 for being the highest placing angler using A.R.E. products.

The Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 was given to the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program. The second-highest-placing eligible entrant received $2,000.

Dick Cepek Rolling Forward Award of $1,000 will be presented to the angler who makes the largest gain in Toyota Angler of the Year points from tournament to tournament.

THRIFT WINS WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON LAKE NORMAN PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 17, 2016) – Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 11 pounds, 11 ounces, Saturday to win the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational at Lake Norman presented by Lowrance. Thrift’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 34 pounds, 12 ounces earned him the win by a slim 6-ounce margin over second place angler Scott Beattie of Lincolnton, North Carolina, in the first FLW Tour Invitational event of 2016. For his win Thrift earned $71,000 and became the second angler – joining 2016 Forrest Wood Cup champion John Cox – to punch his ticket to the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup.

“This is the lake I learned how to fish on,” said Thrift, who also won an FLW Tour event on Lake Norman in 2010. “I’m able to run to specific areas where I know fish are supposed to be. If I don’t get a bite, I can go somewhere else. This week I ran through what I normally run on this lake.

“Most of my fish came from docks and rocks – a lot of bank-related areas,” Thrift continued. “My biggest catches came from the docks. I fished the entire lake all three days and I burned around 35 gallons of gas each day.”

Thrift said he used 10 different baits throughout the week, citing a 4-inch Pearl Blue-colored Damiki Anchovy Shad, a handtied jig and a white buzzbait as his key lures.

“A River2Sea Whopper Plopper and a crankbait also came in handy,” said Thrift. “I had 15 rods on the deck and used every one of them. That’s what makes fishing on Lake Norman so fun. I can go from throwing a buzzbait on a rocky bank to skipping a jig under a dock to throwing a swimbait out deep. It was an awesome week.”

The top 20 pros finished the tournament:

1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 15 bass, 34-12, $61,000 + $10,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

Swindle Still On Top At Angler Of The Year At Mille Lacs Bassmaster Championship

[print_link]

ONAMIA, Minn. — Another impressive day of hefty smallmouth astonished fans during the second round of the $1 million Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Minnesota’s famed Mille Lacs Lake.

On Thursday, the Top 50 qualifiers from the Bassmaster Elite Series produced 23 limits exceeding the 20-pound mark. Today’s field did one better by bringing 24 limits to the scales exceeding 20 pounds.

While that’s an impressive turnout yet again, the angler who catches the heaviest three-day limit of bass does not win this tournament; rather points are the key to victory this week.

Gerald Swindle of Guntersville, Ala., held onto his Angler of the Year lead after weighing 15 pounds, 13 ounces, which brought his two-day total to 25-6. He improved on Thursday’s performance, but Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas, is within 28 points of Swindle in the AOY race.

Things are heating up.

Swindle again struggled to locate and catch the quality smallmouth many of the other anglers are catching with consistency.

“I’ve tried to not think about Angler of the Year, and I’ve done well at focusing on catching fish until I got to Mille Lacs,” Swindle said. “Now I know what’s on the line, and I need to perform here. It’s frustrating to see how well all the guys are doing, while it takes everything I’ve got to catch a small limit. But that’s fishing, and I’m still mad at the fish.”

Every keeper bass the Alabama angler can catch this week will help push him closer to his second AOY title and the $100,000 first-place prize. The remaining $900,000 will be handed out to the other 49 pros based on where they finished in the points. However, Swindle was hoping it wouldn’t come down to the final day.

“My heart is in the game; my mind is in the game,” said, Swindle, who won his first AOY title in 2004. “But I’m a competitor, and it doesn’t matter if a title is on the line or not, I want to win this derby. Right now, I’m not far from dead last, but I’m keeping my eye on the prize, and if the right fish will bite on Sunday, I think I’ll have a good shot at taking home AOY — a title that I have a tremendous amount of respect for.”

Seth Feider of Bloomington, Minn., took the lead in the weight category from Japanese angler Takahiro Omori with a bag of smallmouth that weighed 24-11 — the day’s heaviest limit.

The 31-year-old angler’s two-day total was pushed to 50-3, which is less than 2 pounds ahead of Matt Herren of Ashville, Ala., who weighed 24-9 for a total of 48-7.

Feider did exactly what he said he would by catching almost 25 pounds again, and he is confident he can do even better in Sunday’s final round.

On Sunday it’s supposed to be windy, and I like the wind — it helps the bite,” Feider said. “I’m having a lot of fun, and I’m excited that we’re able to showcase how good Mille Lacs really is.”

When asked if he can repeat his performance again on Sunday, he didn’t hesitate.

“I’ve actually been saving a few of my best spots for Sunday,” he said. “Several of the fish I weighed today came from new spots. But, I’ve narrowed down the pattern, and I’m excited to get back on the water to prove it.”

After today, the unofficial Top 5 in AOY points is as follows: Swindle still in control (905 points); Combs in second (877); Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., is in third (863); Randall Tharp of Port St. Joes, Fla., is in fourth (844); and Jacob Powroznik moved into fifth (835)

Rounding out the Top 5 in weight are Brent Ehrler of Newport Beach, Calif., is in third with 46-3; Hackney is in fourth with 45-15; and Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., in fifth with 45-10.

There will be no fishing on Saturday, as Bassmaster University will take place at Grand Casino Mille Lacs beginning at 11 a.m. Bassmaster fans will have an opportunity to visit sponsor exhibits, attend angler seminars and gather autographs from their favorite pros. The event is free and open to the public.

Competition will resume on Sunday with takeoff beginning at 6:40 a.m. CT from Eddy’s Resort in Onamia, Minn. The final weigh-in will take place at Grand Casino Mille Lacs at 3:45 p.m.

CANTERBURY TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON LAKE NORMAN PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

CANTERBURY TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON LAKE NORMAN PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 16, 2016) – Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury of Springville, Alabama, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 12 pounds, 1 ounce, Friday to take the lead after Day Two of the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational at Lake Norman presented by Lowrance. Canterbury, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 24 pounds even, will bring a slim 6-ounce lead over second-place angler Scott Beattie of Lincolnton, North Carolina, into the third and final day of competition. The field is now cut to 20 in the event that features competitors casting for a top prize of up to $85,000 and a coveted spot in the world championship of bass fishing – the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup.

“I’ve got an area that I’m fishing slowly, and another 30 spots that I’m hitting as quickly as I can,” said Canterbury, who won the regular-season FLW Tour event on Beaver Lake earlier this year. “I wouldn’t say I had a better day than yesterday, but I did bring in two more ounces of bass.

“I spent three hours working through my primary area today,” Canterbury continued. “Yesterday I caught a good limit there and culled twice before leaving. Today I only culled once. I don’t think it has the bigger fish, but they’re quality-sized. I’m finesse fishing for a limit and then going and looking for a big one.”

Canterbury said the bigger bass are feeding on bream in areas scattered around the lake.

“The bream are in shade and under docks,” said Canterbury. “A lot of bass are up shallow eating them. I’ve been throwing a buzzbait and fishing fast, just trying to get one or two bites. One of those bites gave me an additional two pounds this afternoon. I would love to be able to go after them all day, but I don’t think I could get five bites.”

The nine-year FLW Tour veteran said he plans on following the same route tomorrow.

“I’m going to run and catch as many bass as I can and try to win this thing,” said Canterbury.

The top 20 pros heading into the final day of competition on Lake Norman are:
