New Yorker Yund Takes Over Lead At Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open On James River

RICHMOND, Va. — New York B.A.S.S. Nation member George Yund faced a dilemma Friday after weighing in his fish during the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open at the James River.

The 43-year-old fireman for the City of Albany found out he took the lead in the pro division with 30 pounds and had to notify the fire department that he would have to miss work on Saturday.

“I am supposed to be at work at 8 o’clock in the morning, and I have to figure out how to take off,” said Yund. He later disclosed that the department gave him the extra day off, but it was “going to cost” him later.

Playing the tide was the key to Yund catching a 20-pound limit after weighing in a 10-pound bag the first day.

“I made a wrong turn (in the morning) and fished half the day without the right tide in front of me, but I got down to what I had to do and had the tide working for me for at least half the day,” he said.

The Glenmont, N.Y., angler understands how to work the tide because he lives near the Hudson River and also fishes the Connecticut River.

“This is my first time here, and I basically practiced for two days,” he said. “I just looked for hard structure like rock and wood, which I am used to doing on the Hudson.”

Yund made a milk run and found bass on spots where he failed to catch them in practice. “I just kind of looked at the spots and said I was going to fish there because it’s similar to what I do back home,” he said.

Tied for second with 29 pounds each are Lynchburg, Va., pro David Dudley and Cody Pike of Powhatan, Va. Dudley believes timing the tide right helped him catch his fish. Making the long run to the Chickahominy River, Dudley caught his limit early and then culled several times throughout the day to get to 14-14.

“My pattern is whatever comes in front of me,” he said. “If I see a dock, I am throwing at a dock. If I see lily pads, I am throwing at lily pads. I am not doing anything special.”

Pike caught a limit early but ran into motor problems around 11 o’clock. “So I kind of limped my way back (to the takeoff site),” he said. Stopping on a place he had never fished before, Pike caught about a 5-pounder that kicked his limit up to 14-8.

Rounding out the Top 5 in the pro division are Charlie Hartley of Grove City, Ohio, in fourth place with 28-2 and Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, in fifth with 27-9.

Taking the lead in the co-angler division with 18-3 was Francis Martin, a 58-year-old general contractor from North Chesterfield, Va. His familiarity with the river has helped vault him into the lead. “I fish here almost every weekend,” he said.

Hosting this event is Richmond Region Tourism. Saturday’s final launch will be held at the Osborne Boat Landing, 9530 Osborne Turnpike in Henrico at 6:30 a.m. ET. The final-day weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops at 11550 Lakeridge Parkway in Ashland and will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Only the Top 12 remaining anglers in each division will compete.

A unique cool new patented craw trailer design that might change how you think about fishing craw trailers.

One of the cooler crawfish trailers I’ve seen in a bit has to be the Lau Lures Chief Craw. Lau Lures is famous for it’s Death Shimmer spinnerbaits but this craw might even be a cooler design. The Chief Craw features two legs that really do float putting the pinchers in the defense position whenever you stop the jig.

It looks very sexy in the water on the back of a rubber-skirted jig. As the jig opens up, the pinchers rise up slowly into the fighting position. It looks like a craw on guard. A very natural presentation for sure.

Dillow Positioned For A Repeat On The James River

RICHMOND, Va. — Local favorite Chris Dillow dialed up the heat for the competition on a hot opening day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on the James River.

A cold front and storm passed through the area the night before, but the Northern Open competitors still had to contend with temperatures climbing up to 94 degrees. The heat didn’t faze Dillow as he caught a five-fish limit weighing 18 pounds, 3 ounces to take the lead in the pro division and position himself for another victory on the James. The 58-year-old real estate agent won last year’s Open at the James River to qualify for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro and is gunning for a repeat.

“I just went fishing today and only caught one of them on my jig,” Dillow said. The Waynesboro, Va., angler disclosed he caught six keepers on five different lures throughout the day.

While several competitors made the long run to the Chickahominy River, Dillow decided to fish his usual 10-mile stretch close to the takeoff site. When his boat batteries went dead at about 10 a.m., Dillow was restricted to only a few areas for the rest of the day.

“I didn’t have any depthfinders or anything, so I was jump-starting my engine all day long,” he said.

During practice Dillow caught a bunch of 2-pounders, but decided to leave his big fish areas alone.

“I knew it was going to be a grind-it-out thing, but who knows if I will even catch a fish tomorrow,” he said. “It is hard to tell.”

The heat was on, but the fishing was still a lot of fun for Grove City, Ohio pro Charlie Hartley who moved into second place with a 16-15 limit.

“There are so many days when it is not fun, so when it is good I am going to enjoy it,” Hartley said. “I am down so often after tournaments that it feels so good to be up.”

The former Bassmaster Elite Series pro is gunning for his first B.A.S.S. victory.

“I caught some really good fish in practice, so I started there today and had my limit in the first hour,” Hartley said. “Then I culled twice and I thought I had a really good bag.”

He had been catching his fish on a low tide and thought his day was done when the tide changed, but he still caught one more quality fish on a high tide.

“I am flipping a cricket (undisclosed soft plastic) in little tight places which is one of my favorite things to do,” Hartley said.

The remaining Top 5 pro division anglers include Brian Kelly, Liverpool, N.Y., Alvin Shaw, Roaring Gap, N.C. and Vinny Troiano, Chesterfield, N.J., all tied for third place with 15-12.

Taking over the lead in the co-angler division with three fish weighing 12-13 was Chesterfield, Va., angler Mark Ludwig. The 56-year-old construction superintendent is a member of the Shady Tree Bassmasters B.A.S.S. Nation club.

Hosting this event is Richmond Region Tourism. Tomorrow’s launch, weigh-in and the final-day launch will be held at the Osborne Boat Landing, 9530 Osborne Turnpike in Henrico. The final day weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops at 11550 Lakeridge Parkway in Ashland.

WJ LINDEQUE CC SIGNS EXCLUSIVE LICENSING AGREEMENT TO RUN FLW BASS-FISHING TOURNAMENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 17, 2016) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced an exclusive licensing agreement with WJ Lindeque CC, of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, to begin sanctioning FLW bass-fishing tournaments in South Africa. The agreement was signed by FLW President of Operations Kathy Fennel and Hannes Lindeque, a managing member of WJ Lindeque CC.

South Africa will run a series of FLW tournaments that advance anglers, who are citizens of the host country, to the International Division at the Costa FLW Series Championship beginning in 2017. Two anglers will compete as pros, with FLW providing Ranger boats, and two will compete as co-anglers.

“I’m very excited to be part of such an internationally-focused tournament organization,” said Lindeque, who has competed in FLW tournaments in the United States. “I know that South Africa has some of the world’s best anglers and it is a dream come true to give them an opportunity to compete at a high level. I look forward to seeing how they fare at the Costa FLW Series Championship in 2017.”

The top pro award at the Costa FLW Series Championship is $95,000, including a Ranger Z518C boat if the pro is Ranger Cup qualified, and the top co-angler award is a Ranger Z117 boat. The highest finishing pro from the International Division at the Costa FLW Series Championship will advance to the following year’s Forrest Wood Cup for the chance to compete on the sport’s biggest stage. FLW will also provide a Ranger boat for use in the Forrest Wood Cup.

South Africa is the fifth country to sign on for the international sanctioning program, joining Canada, South Korea, China, and Mexico.

“We are thrilled to add South Africa to our growing list of countries offering FLW events,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW president of operations. “The global bass fishing community has embraced FLW as a unifying force as we strive to provide unsurpassed opportunities for anglers, fans and sponsors worldwide. South Africa has incredibly dedicated anglers that we are pleased to welcome into the FLW family.”

Named after the founder of Ranger Boats, Forrest L. Wood, FLW introduced its Fishing League Worldwide tagline in 2014 to better reflect its status as the world’s largest tournament fishing organization. In early 2015, FLW expanded its presence on the world stage with the introduction of a sanctioning program allowing international partners to license the iconic brand and run FLW tournaments abroad.

Arguably one of bass fishing’s best shallow-water habitats, water willow gives anglers an opportunity to catch giant bass even in the heat of the summer.

It grows just about anywhere and while even hardcore bass anglers often fail to know its name, what they know for sure is that from mid-spring through autumn it’s unequivocally one of the best shallow water largemouth habitats on the planet.

Water willow—or scientifically—Justicia americana.

“When I see it, I immediately think about how many bass they catch out of it along the Coosa River on swim jigs,” said former Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Champ, Matt Lee of Alabama. “Year after year, swimming a 3/8-ounce jig with a bluegill-colored Strike King Menace as a trailer is one of the most reliable shallow water bites you can get on.”
