Buckeye Flick-It Review Walker Smith August 2,2016

Buckeye Flick-It Review

Walker Smith

Tuesday at 1:19 AM

This football-shaped jighead is an great tool for wacky-rigging your favorite finesse and stick worms when the bite gets tough.

When everything else fails to produce, anglers around the world rely on wacky-rigged worms to get the job done. By hooking a stick worm or finesse worm through the middle, you’re able to show the bass something totally different than they’re accustomed to seeing. This technique doesn’t just catch small ones either; some of my biggest catches have come on a wacky-rigged stick worm.

I’ve spent the last several months testing the Buckeye Flick-It jighead. After catching bass with it in in several different bodies of water, it has become a major confidence technique for me.

Bethel University And Texas State Square Off In Bassmaster Classic Bracket Finals

PARIS, Tenn. — It was a bad day for Kansas State. But the Wildcats’ loss was the gain of Bethel University’s John Garrett and Texas State’s Evan Coleman, who both reached the final of the 2016 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Garrett, who attends Bethel, which is just a few dozen miles from Kentucky Lake where this tournament is taking place, once again was the dominant angler in the head-to-head tournament that started with eight collegiate fishermen on Thursday. The No. 4 seed in the College Classic Bracket, Garrett defeated second-seeded Taylor Bivins of Kansas State with a tremendous 19-pound, 7-ounce limit of bass that was more than 10 pounds heavier than any of the other three student anglers fishing on Friday.

Garrett topped Bivins, who had only one bass on Friday that weighed 4-3.

“They’re pulling current on (Kentucky Lake), and where I’m fishing is a real sloping point, and there’s a hot spot on top of it,” he said. “In my mind yesterday, I thought they would bite on the tip of that point, and it’s not really deep there on top of it. That’s where they were today.  The place I caught a lot of 2 pounders yesterday, I skimmed over it and the fish grew in numbers and in size. I made one cast, and caught a 4-pounder.”

Bivins said the key to surviving the semifinal round was to put five bass in the livewell. He was right, and with only one fish (albeit a nice one) to his credit on Friday, the magical run that included a National College Championship win with Kyle Alsop last week, came to an end.

“Today was slow and obviously, John Garrett had a huge bag of fish,” Bivins said. “When I get back home, and my mind is off fishing for a little bit, it will finally sink in that we won a National Championship. You can’t take that away.”

Coleman, the No. 6 seed from Texas State, is the last man standing between Garrett and a  berth in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro. Though he hadn’t fished on Kentucky Lake until practice for the College Classic Bracket began, he has shown a tremendous amount of creativity and is cruising all over the water in search of bass.

He had four fish that weighed 8-3 on Friday, which topped Alsop’s two fish that totaled 3-5. Alsop was the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Coleman said he was undeterred facing the top seed, and won’t be intimidated fishing against Garrett on his home water.

“I’m rolling, and covering miles and miles of shoreline,” Coleman said. “I’m comfortable doing that. I had a really good sack on Day 2 of practice and I think if I can mimic that, I’ve got a shot. I have to see if I can figure out what I was doing then, and what I’m not doing now, and make the adjustments accordingly. But I’m never intimidated. It’s kind of unfortunate (that Garrett knows this lake better than I do), but I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do.

“I want it, and I want it bad,” Coleman said.

Alsop knows Coleman is an extremely capable angler who can win the Classic Bracket Saturday, whether it’s familiar water or not.

“Anything can happen in fishing,” Alsop said.

Garrett and Coleman are scheduled to launch at 5:30 a.m. Saturday at Paris Landing State Park. Weigh-in is scheduled to begin in downtown Paris, Tenn. at 2:30 p.m. CST.

Pell City Takes High School Championship Lead

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. — When all else fails, “junk fishing” often prevails. Fishing both shallow and deep paid off for Ean Davis and Grayson Hanson, giving them the second-round lead in the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship.

The team, representing Pell City High School in Alabama, caught five bass weighing 21 pounds, 12 ounces Friday for an overall total of 38-13. The catch stands as the heaviest single day weight caught during the tournament underway on Barkley and Kentucky lakes.

Junk fishing is a last resort when there is no prevailing pattern in a lake. The junk term comes from the attempt to catch a bass from any casting target or cover encountered along a given stretch of shoreline. You are basically using everything in the tacklebox and casting at anything.

“In August on the Tennessee River everybody talks about fishing the ledges,” said Zeke Gossett, the team captain who coincidentally is a 2014 graduate of the high school located near Birmingham, Ala.

“That’s how it’s going for us and we’re making the most of it,” said Davis, 18, a senior. “At least in our junk pattern the areas have produced at least one quality bass on both days.”

Today that was a largemouth weighing 7-5. Thursday the pair anchored their catch with a largemouth weighing 6-13.

“We’re not getting a lot of bites but they are quality fish,” added Hanson, 17, a junior. “There is at least one good one in there and we’ll need it again tomorrow.”

They will indeed need it. The junk spot didn’t give up the 7-pounder until 1:30 p.m. Tomorrow will take swinging for the fences since the Top 12 teams will compete for college bass fishing’s national championship title. Weekend anglers and a large-scale local tournament will replace the fishing pressure created by the high school teams eliminated after Day 2.

The Panthers bass fishing team is fishing two areas. Those include deepwater ledges and a key 700-yard stretch of shoreline.

“We are just rotating between the two areas but the shallow spot is the best,” said Gossett.

Austin Hamner and Aaron Reed, the Day 1 leaders, dropped to second with a total weight of 35-7. Samuel and Matthew Vandagriff of Warren County High School in Tennessee dropped to third with 33-8. Ryan Wood and Turner Mason, fishing for the Front Range Bass Club in Colorado, pulled into fourth with 32-9. Colton Didion and John Hutson of the Hartley Hawgs in Ohio hold down fifth place with 32-6.

The leaders behind Pell City continue finding success using a traditionally popular method of fishing here during summer. That is finding tight schools of bass offshore on the lake’s underwater ledges. Those drop off into the deep, cooler water of the Tennessee River channel.

That is where the bass find a comfort zone and source of food. The current and cooler water also attracts baitfish. Timing is everything. The bass follow the bait and there are no guarantees they stay in the same spot. Even so, it’s a gamble worth taking.

“Today we didn’t have enough current,” admitted Hamner, referring to the flow created by the release of water from Kentucky Dam. “We need it to run all day to be good.”

The Northside High School team from Tuscaloosa, Ala., duplicated their fishing strategy today by fishing shallow and then going to the deepwater ledges.

“We are fishing shallow to catch a quick limit and then moving deep for the bigger bite,” said Reed.

The limit came again by 8:30 a.m. and the anglers replaced the smaller catch with bigger bass caught on the ledges.

The lack of current and calm winds played into the favor of the strategy chosen by Wood and Mason, students at Legacy High School in Broomfield, Co.

“Current doesn’t matter at all to us because we are fishing in shallow water,” said Wood, who was on the 2015 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team.

Coincidentally, shallow water produced the winning catch for three consecutive days for the winning team last year. That high school championship was held on Kentucky Lake in early August.

A coach, whose role is mentoring the anglers, accompanies them in the boat. Teams must take a 15-minute half-time break after four hours of fishing. One-minute timeouts are optional.

Teams are eligible to win $70,250 in scholarship funds. B.A.S.S. is contributing $21,000 and sponsors are providing $9,250. The remaining $40,000 will be awarded by Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. The school has the distinction as the first to offer academic scholarships for members of a collegiate bass fishing team. Triton will also provide an additional $500 scholarship to each angler through sixth place.

Saturday, the Top 12 teams take off at 5:30 a.m. from Paris Landing State Park. The final weigh-in, when the Costa Bassmaster High School Champions will be crowned, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on the Henry County Court House square in downtown Paris.

Forrest Wood: The Man Behind the Bass Boat

Terry Brown

07/29/2016

Equally as impressive as his popular Ranger bass boats is Forrest Wood’s wisdom, cerebral demeanor and dedication to fisheries management.

Believe it or not I was once an athlete. I lived for sports—mainly baseball and basketball—and found that sports centered me. They were something that I had to work hard in for success and due to my small size, I had to be twice as good as those I competed with to get playing time.

The men I looked up to in my childhood were my dad, uncles and grandpas and my heroes were all sports figures. The game of the week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese was mandatory. As my skills waned athletically I found that competition was still important to me and fishing competitively filled that void.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Aug. 4, 2016) – Fifty of the best bass anglers in the world converged on Wheeler Lake in Huntsville, Alabama, this morning for the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world-championship of professional bass fishing. The four-day competition, which awards a top cash prize of $300,000, will feature a full field of anglers Friday before cutting to the top 20 on Saturday, and to the final 10 on championship Sunday.

Pro John Cox of Debary, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 11 ounces, to take the early lead after Day One on the water. Cox holds a slim 1-pound, 13-ounce, lead over Brandon McMillian of Clewiston, Florida, who caught five bass weighing 14-14, good for second place.

Cox said he spent his day on the south end of the lake dissecting a 300-yard creek arm off of the main river. He said it was one of four arms that he had hit during practice.

“I was on my way into a hole that I figured no one could get to, and I ended up catching them on the way back there,” said Cox, who won the FLW Tour event on Lake Hartwell earlier this season. “It took about 40 minutes to get in there. There were a lot of logs I had to go across.”

Cox said he caught 10 fish along his path using a variety of baits including a buzzbait, spinnerbait and a Yamamoto Senko.

“I saw some duckweed in a tree and caught one on a frog, and then another from a clump nearby,” said Cox. “I flipped and casted all day. I caught my largest fish in the morning – a 3-pounder – when I finally got to the back of the creek.”

Heading into Day Two, Cox said he is confident that some sizeable bass will still be in his area.

“I’m thinking I can go back in there tomorrow and catch them again,” said Cox. “The fish were healthy, thick and eating good. I like how the area was setting up. I don’t know if I can get the same weight as today, but 13 pounds is a definite possibility.”

Country music superstar Dustin Lynch will perform a free concert on the Walmart weigh-in stage at the Propst on Sunday starting at 4 p.m., prior to the final weigh-in. The concert is presented by WDRM 102.1 radio. Lynch occupies a unique place in today’s country music. Thanks to his classic sensibilities, he’s been heralded as the heir to George Strait’s throne. Yet with one listen to, “Where It’s At” it’s obvious the young Tennessee native knows how to combine his traditional influences with an edgy intensity that places him at the vanguard of today’s contemporary country scene.

The Folger’s Morning Takeoff, FLW Expo, Bass & BBQ event, live concert and weigh-ins are all free and open to the public.

Coverage of the Forrest Wood Cup will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) when “FLW” airs October 18 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. EDT. Alabama Anglers Lead High School Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Aaron Reed and Austin Hamner were among the last boats to leave the dock this morning, and the Alabama teens returned with the heaviest catch of the first round of the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship.

The two anglers from Tuscaloosa, Ala., caught five bass weighing 20 pounds, 3 ounces, to lead high school bass fishing’s national championship, underway this week on Kentucky and Barkley lakes.

“We had a good practice, catching mostly 3-pounders, and carried it over into today,” said Hamner.

“Being in the last flight of boats to leave didn’t hurt us, and we know that our takeoff time tomorrow will be earlier,” added Reed. “Our fish bite best in the morning.”

Reed and Hamner are members of the Northside High School Fishing team in Tuscaloosa. They are among 348 teen anglers from 175 high school teams competing for the national title after qualifying through a series of state and regional tournaments.

Not far behind the leaders with 19-6 are Samuel and Matthew Vandagriff, brothers fishing for Warren County High School in McMinnville, Tenn. Cody Stahl and Tate VanEgmond, of CrossPointe Christian Academy in Georgia, hold down third place with 19-4. Zach Vielhauer and Remington Wagner, fishing for Kickback High School in Kansas, are fourth with 18-13. And in fifth place with 18-6 are Bobby Bauer and C.J. Guest of Carson City High School in North Carolina.

The leaders are following a familiar fishing pattern on the lakes impounded by the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. During summer the bass gravitate to Kentucky and Barkley lakes’ offshore ledges. Those border the river channels and two of the bass’ key needs: food and comfort.

Cooler water is there, and so are schools of baitfish for sustaining their diet. The bass follow the food, making success hinge on the angler being at the right place at the right time.

Hamner and Reed are fishing early in the morning with topwater lures to catch actively feeding bass in shallow water. As the water temperature increases with the sunlight, the anglers are moving into deeper water.

“We have separate areas for catching limit fish and big bass,” explained Reed. “It’s a combination of being there when they are feeding.”

The anglers can weigh five bass per team measuring a minimum of 15 inches in length. The leaders are confident they can repeat the feat on Friday.

“We didn’t catch our limit until 10:30, but that was because of the late takeoff,” added Hamner. “We have four or five really good spots to try tomorrow.”

Like the leaders, the Vandagriff brothers are beginning the day shallow and then moving deeper.

“We culled up to bigger bass from our initial limit,” said Samuel. “We should be able to do it again tomorrow.”

The Vandagriffs caught their limit by 8:30 a.m. and then were able to cull those smaller bass with bigger ones that added up to the weight they brought to the scales.

“We only have two key areas, but that’s all we need,” added Matthew. “We didn’t need to fish the second area, it was that good.”

Fifth-place anglers Guest and Bauer are following the leaders by technique, fishing shallow early and then moving to deep water.

“We’re cranking ledges just like everyone else,” said Guest. “It’s all about being there at the right time and tomorrow we swing for the fences.”

That will be a good idea. After Friday, the field is cut to the Top 12 for the final day of fishing and to determine the national champion.

A coach, whose role is mentoring the anglers, accompanies them in the boat. Teams must take a 15-minute half-time break after four hours of fishing. One-minute timeouts are optional. Hamner and Reed landed their fifth keeper shortly after concluding the break.

Teams are eligible to win $70,250 in scholarship funds. B.A.S.S. is contributing $21,000 and sponsors are providing $9,250. The remaining $40,000 will be awarded by Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. The school has the distinction as the first to offer scholarships for members of a collegiate bass fishing team.

Triton Boas will also provide an additional $500 scholarship to each angler through sixth place.

Cap Massey, 14, of Animas, N.M., caught the big bass of the day weighing 8-5. He declined to comment on the lure used to catch the largemouth, saying only that it came from deep water.

The anglers take off at 5:30 a.m. from Paris Landing State Park and return for the weigh-in at 1:45 p.m. Paris Landing hosts the Day 2 weigh-in, while the final weigh-in, including crowning of the national champions, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in downtown Paris.

College Anglers Advance To Second Round Of Classic Bracket Event on Kentucky Lake

College Anglers Advance To Second Round Of Classic Bracket Event on Kentucky Lake

PARIS, Tenn. — Bethel University’s John Garrett already had a limit of fish in his livewell early on Thursday morning before he decided to head to another of his favorite spots on Kentucky Lake.

He figured that if he was going to survive the first day of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops, he’d need a lunker in his boat, instead of the steady stream of 2 1/2-pounders he found just after sunrise.

But when he got to that next spot, he found the unexpected.

“There were a bunch of (U.S.) Marines out there with helicopters and parachutes,” Garrett said. “There were rubber boats out there and people were diving in and catching them. I went over there, and they told me I had to leave. I went back a little later on, and they were gone. Then they came right back and told me to leave again. I kept trying to sneak in (but they weren’t having it.)”

Garrett may have been outmaneuvered during the military exercises, but it turns out that he didn’t need anything more than the five 2 1/2-pound bass he boated to start off the tournament. He was fishing head-to head against Texas State University’s Sam Stone, and only the winner of that pairing would compete on Friday when the eight-man field was winnowed to four.

Garrett’s limit of 12 pounds, 5 ounces put him in that number. He was the only angler in the College Classic Bracket to catch five keepers on Thursday, and he next will fish Kansas State University’s Taylor Bivins, who defeated Auburn University’s Austin Handley in another bracket.

Kyle Alsop, the K-State teammate with whom Bivins paired to win the college national championship last week, beat Auburn’s Caleb Wozniak, and also advanced. The fourth semifinal spot went to Texas State’s Evan Coleman, who knocked off Bethel University’s Brian Pahl. Alsop and Coleman will face off in another head-to-head matchup on Kentucky and Barkley lakes on Friday.

Individual members of the Top 4 teams from the college national championship were seeded 1 through 8 for the College Classic Bracket. The winner of the unique event earns a spot in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro in Houston in March.

Garrett, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, beat No. 5 seed Stone, who only caught one fish on Thursday that weighed 2-1. Stone’s schoolmate Coleman, however, survived to fish on Friday with a three-fish total of 8-2. His first round opponent, Bethel’s Pahl, didn’t weigh a fish on Thursday at Paris Landing State Park.

Coleman had never fished Kentucky or neighboring Barkley Lake before practice for this tournament, but he had enough weight to make the second round.

“I’m just going out there and finding out what to do,” he said. “I know this is a ledge lake, but I’m not the best offshore guy. So I fished shallow some, and I got on fish today. I didn’t have five, but I did have three quality bites. Because of this format, you can’t save anything on any day. If I have to go out searching, I’ll have to do a lot of map work and cover a lot of water. I caught 30 fish today, but 15 of them or so were short by 1/8 of an inch. If those are just grow an inch, I can catch 12 or 13 pounds fast.” Bass must be at least 15 inches long to count in this tournament.

Alsop and Bivins both talked about having momentum coming into this event, after having won the Carhartt College Series National Championship in Kentucky last week. They now are one step closer to making the Classic — a dream for both of them.

Alsop caught three fish weighing 7-10 to beat Wozniak, who had one fish for 1-12.

“I had three fish at 7:40 this morning,” Alsop said. “I was on a roll. I started bouncing around, and covering new water, but I didn’t catch another fish until 12:50 or so … I’ve got another day of fishing. When you look at it, I’ve got two guys in between me and the Classic.”

One of those guys could be Bivins, who had three fish for 5-2 on Thursday to beat Handley who zeroed. The K-State teammates will meet in the finals if Alsop can beat Coleman on Friday, and Bivins can outlast Garrett.

“Today was a straight-up grind,” Bivins said. “I had a lot of hook sets for the camera, but a lot of undersized fish … I’ve got another day of fishing, though. Getting the ball rolling for Kyle and me was important. I think getting five fish in the boat is still the key. If you get that, you’ve got a good chance. If it happens, it happens.”

The second round of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops will begin with launch Friday at 5:30 a.m. at Paris Landing State Park. Weigh-in will begin at 1:45 p.m. The final two anglers will duke it out on Saturday for a spot in the 2017 Classic.

The Great Fishing Pyramid … but not the one in Memphis

One of these days I’m going to sit down and write a diatribe about how we in the sportfishing industry lie to ourselves about the size and avidity of our audience. I’m going to call it “The Big Lie.” Perhaps luckily for you, today is not that day.Instead I want to write about a related matter — the customer pyramid that exists in any hobby- or leisure-based industry, like fishing.
