BASS-  The largemouth are now in a summer pattern that will last through the mid September transition. You will be able to catch them on top water baits early in the morning. before the sun comes up. If you wish to continue with the top water bite, then you must…….”CHASE THE SHADE!”

Look for fish to move back out to deep water as the sun gets higher in the sky. Follow them and continue to catch them. Lots of fish will stay deep even through the night, deep brush piles, bridge pilings, rock piles and deep boat docks will all have fish on them.

Typical summer time baits include………

Top Water- Buzz Baits, Poppers, Prop Baits, Walking Baits

Mid Range- Crank Baits, Swim Baits, Soft Jerk Baits

Bottom- Texas Rigs, Carolina Rigs, Shakey Heads, Jigs, Drop Shot

My typical day in the summer will go like this….Look for a top water bite around boat docks and chasing the shade with a Damiki MTB Noisy Buzz Bait or a Paycheck Baits Repoman in the Mid lake Area.

If running uplake, I will start fishing willow grass with a Damiki Air Frog or Spro Popping Frog. I maket a point not to try and force feed them top water baits, after about 30 minutes with no bites, I will make the move to slower presentations.

After the sun comes up and is penetrating the water, the fish will either move to deeper water of will push back further into the grass and under boat docks. At this time I will skip shakey head rigged worms under boat docks and pitch Double D Hybrid Jigs into the darkest areas of the willow grass.

If in the mid lake area, I will move out to off shore brush piles and fish them slowly with shakey heads, big texas rigged worms and deep diving crankbaits, Norman DD22’s, Strike King 5XD’s & 6XD’s. I look for bait around the brush before i make a cast into it, although you can catch fish from brush without bait fish present, the fish will much less active.

I will fish deep docks with drop shots and shakey heads. Be sure to skip your shakey head as far underneath the dock as you can get it. Fish the shady side of the dock with a drop shot, fish can be found anywhere ubder and around the docks during the summer.

I will stick with fishing slow the rest of the day. Bites will normally be few and far between, the only way to continue to catch fish during the dog days of summer is to keep grinding away!!!!!!!!  One this is for sure, YOU CANNOT CATCH THEM SITTING IN THE LAZY BOY WITH THE AC BLOWING ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

CRAPPIE-   The crappie have finished their spawn and are back in deep water for the summer. Look for them around the uplake bridge pilings, deep brush and deep boat docks. Small minnows rigged on a slip bobber will be the best way to catch them.

STRIPER-  The striper are now beginning to school up very well and are aggressively chasing baitfish to the top at first light. Broken back redfins, zara spooks and small swimbaits are all catching fish first thing in the morning. After the feed is over, look for them to go deep and locate them with your electronics and drop toothache spoons to them.

If casting and jigging is not your thing, the trolling bite will begin to pick up with the rising water temps. Deep diving red fins with a 1/4-1/2oz  bucktail trailer or a Norman DD22 are my baits of choice.

Look for them from 208 to the splits and in front of Dike 1 & Dike 2. Lots of smaller fish in the Dike 3 area, lots of fun to cxatch if you are just looking for some rod action.

The Hybrid Striper (Wiper) are also getting really close to being the legal minimum length of 20 inches to keep. Pound for pound,  these fish are more aggressive and stronger than the striper.

How to Catch Bass Suspending off the Channel Edge David A. Brown

How to Catch Bass Suspending off the Channel Edge

David A. Brown

June 29,2016

FLW Tour pros Jason Lambert and Randy Haynes share their insights on catching suspending bass off of channel or other structure breaks in the summer.

Aside from the ones in another angler’s livewell, most agree that some of the toughest bass to catch are suspenders. This time of year, anglers fishing offshore occasionally face the frustration of bass floating off the structure and often sliding out to adjacent deeper water and holding in general lethargy.

Suffice it to say that catching your fish in that perplexing suspension mode, requires a shift in strategies. Indeed, you’ll do well to replace those traditional ledge tactics with a few apropos targeting moves designed to tempt a few more bites from a scattered school.

Terminator Walking Frog Review by Walker Smith June 29,2016

Terminator Walking Frog Review

Walker Smith

June 29,2016

After months of fishing with this topwater frog, we’ve found it to be incredibly effective in a wide range of situations.

Every red-blooded angler loves topwater frog fishing. These unique lures give us the unique ability to make bass react in the thickest of cover, resulting in outrageous blowups and most importantly, huge catches. Even when the conditions aren’t exactly ideal for this technique, I often have a hard time putting a frog down in favor of other lures. It’s that fun.

To my knowledge, I’ve tested nearly every hollow-bellied frog on the market and after spending a lot of time fishing with the Terminator Walking Frog, I’ve noticed some unique characteristics that make it an excellent choice for topwater fishing in heavy cover.

Hardy Rides One Good Area To Bassmaster Northern Open Win On Oneida Lake

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Milking one spot for three straight days made a winner of Wil Hardy II at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open on Oneida Lake.

The Harlem, Ga., angler caught 18 pounds, 4 ounces of smallmouth bass — his second straight catch of 18-plus pounds —to win the pro division and the grand prize of a $45,000 Nitro Z20 with a Mercury 225 Pro XS and $8,491 in cash.

The 26-year-old Hardy finished with a three-day total of 15 bass that weighed 53-13 to win his first B.A.S.S. tournament and claim a berth in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic, provided he fishes the remaining two Northern Opens.

Each day, Hardy caught his limit early while Carolina-rigging a green pumpkin Zoom Speed Craw and dragging a 3/4-ounce Greenfish Tackle Creeper jig tipped with a green pumpkin Zoom Speed Craw along the bottom. “I had a limit pretty early again (about 7:30 a.m.) today, but it was a whole lot slower than it has been,” he said. “We didn’t catch many small ones. It seems like most of the ones we caught were pretty decent. Then we culled up three or four times after that.”

Hardy said the area he fished had a “whole lot of everything” including scattered gravel, zebra mussels and cuts of grass. “I found that spot last year (during the Northern Open held on Oneida in August 2015), but I never really caught them that good there,” said Hardy, who caught a quick limit there during the first day of this year’s event. Most of the fish he caught were about 11 to 13 feet deep.

Indianapolis, Ind., pro Jacob Wheeler chased smallmouth again and caught a limit that weighed 16-6 to take second place with 50-9. “Today was a lot of fun,” Wheeler said. “I went out there and caught a lot of fish. That is the cool thing about Oneida Lake. It is getting better and better every single time we come here.”

Wheeler found smallmouth roaming in the holes of grass and along breaklines where the fish were 10 to 13 feet deep. His strategy was drop-shotting with a green pumpkin finesse worm to catch a limit and then switching to a Carolina-rigged Larew Punch Out craw or Larew Biffle Bug Jr. for catching larger fish.

The rest of the Top 5 in the pro division included Jamie Hartman of Newport, N.Y., with 50-6, Kurt Dove of Del Rio, Texas with 50-4 and Larry Mazur of East Aurora, N.Y., with 48-11.

The co-angler top prize of a $30,000 Triton 179 TRX with a Mercury 115ELPT Four Stroke package went to Joel Willert who finished with 29-9. The 32-year-old Burnsville, Minn., angler caught all of his fish on a Ned Rig and drop-shotting a soft plastic goby bait.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 on the pro side went to Mike Shumanis of Bethlehem, Pa., with a 5-4 largemouth. Jeremy Jones of Big Rapids, Mich., weighed in a 5-0 to earn the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award on the co-angler side.

Hardy also received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Day 2. Darryl Halbert, Enoree, S.C., won the Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250 for finishing as the top co-angler on Day 2.

Wheeler earned the A.R.E Top Angler Award of $500 for being the highest-finishing angler using A.R.E products.

Wheeler also won the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $500.

ALX IKOS Fishing Rod Review By Terry Brown June 28,2016

ALX IKOS Fishing Rod Review

Terry Brown

June 28,2016

Terry shares his experiences with the ALX IKOS bass fishing rod he’s been using for a few months.

The minute you put a well-constructed rod in your hands, you can just feel it. The weight, the balance, the power and the cosmetics just seem to work in concert. Because there are so many rod companies in fishing, choosing one that has the right action, the perfect length and the right price can be a difficult task at times.

I use the blind test on just about every rod. I never look at price until the end of the test when evaluating them, and I do that for a reason. I want the rod to be judged on the quality versus how much it costs, and it’s amazing to me just how many great rods are priced from $100-200 based on that test. I found exactly that with the ALX IKOS Promise 73 rod.

Missile Baits Releases the Craw Father and New Colors

[print_link]
Salem, Va. – July 1, 2016 – Missile Baits has just released their all-new Craw Father. The new bait is a 3.5” compact craw with action in the claws. The Craw Father covers a wide variety of applications such as flipping, punching, Carolina rigging, and as a jig trailer. The new craw will come in 8 of Missile Baits’ top selling colors including Green Pumpkin Flash, Bruiser Flash, and Superbug.
Company owner and pro angler, John Crews said, “The Craw Father was a bait that came out of necessity like all our other baits. I kept finding myself looking for a compact craw with the action I wanted so I just designed it. I love how it turned out.”
Fellow pro angler and Missile pro staffer, Ish Monroe added, “John sent some prototypes before I went to Toho in January. The bite was tough but I got tons of bites when I switched to punching the Craw Father. I caught a bunch of fish behind other guys and ended up with a top 5 on it!”
New colors in the D Bomb, D Stroyer, and Baby D Stroyer are also being released. The D Bomb is coming out in El Diablo, a triple laminate with black red on top, red on bottom, and an orange vein in the middle. The D Bomb and D Stroyer will come in Copper Chopper, which is a laminate with a green pumpkin with copper shimmer on top and a smoke with heavy blue shimmer on the bottom. The Baby D Stroyer will come in the bluegill and perch imitating, Shrapnel.
The Craw Father and all of the new colors is shipping to dealers and distributors so be sure to look for them in stores and online during the month of July.
