Hardy Heads The Pack In Bassmaster Oneida Open

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Georgia angler Wil Hardy II has proved during the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open at Oneida Lake that he can catch smallmouth bass even though he rarely fishes for them.

Hardy says the only time he ever fishes for smallmouth is during the Northern Opens. Despite his lack of fishing experience for brown bass, the Harlem, Ga., angler has taken the lead in the pro division with a two-day catch of 10 smallmouth weighing 35 pounds, 9 ounces.

“Hopefully it will be all smallmouth for me tomorrow,” said Hardy, a 26-year-old fishing tackle company co-owner. “If I have largemouth (tomorrow), I either got really lucky or something really bad happened.”

Hardy’s smallmouth game plan worked perfectly for him the first two days of the tournament. Thursday, he caught his limit early and then went hunting for more schools of bass the rest of the day.

“Today I wasn’t sure how the weights were going to be so we just sat there and hammered on them and tried to cull up for the ounces that we could,” Hardy said. “We caught about all of our fish before 10 o’clock and I think I culled out one fish after that.”

Bassmaster Elite Series qualifier Jacob Wheeler has also chased after smallmouth both days and moved into second place with 34-3. He credits teaming up with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Adrian Avena to stay on top of the roaming smallmouth.

“Changing up tactics has been the big thing for me this week,” Wheeler said.

The Indianapolis, Ind., pro noticed the smallmouth on this lake tend to be on one place one day and might be 300 yards away the next day.

“These smallmouth tend to roam on Oneida a lot,” Wheeler said. “They roam around the grass. They roam on the flats. It’s not like Lake Erie smallmouth fishing, where you pull up to a rockpile and (know) the fish are going to be on that rockpile.”

Rounding out the Top 5 in the pro division are Jesse Tacoronte, Orlando, Fla., third place, 33-9; Mike Shumanis, Bethlehem, Pa., fourth, 33-8; and Larry Mazur, East Aurora, N.Y., fifth, 32-14.

Today was a reunion of sorts for co-angler Darryl Halbert, who was paired with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike Iaconelli. The 55-year-old dentist recalls fishing with Iaconelli during a Bassmaster Invitational back in the early 1990s.

“That was back when he was a scrawny little kid,” said Halbert. The Enoree, S.C., angler took over the co-angler division lead by catching six bass weighing 20-12 the last two days while dropshotting.

The Livingston Lures Leader Awards went to Hardy for leading the pro division on Day 2 and Halbert for leading the co-angler division.

Visit Syracuse (www.visitsyracuse.com) is hosting this event. Saturday’s takeoff is at 5:30 a.m. ET at Oneida Shores Park. The Top 12 finalists from each division will weigh in at 3 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops in Utica, N.Y.

Classic Bracket Tournament On Niagara River Will Be First Of Its Kind For B.A.S.S.

Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., is one of eight Bassmaster Elite Series pros that earned a spot to compete in the first-ever angler vs. angler, bracket-style event — the Bassmaster Classic bracket — to be held July 19-22 on the Niagara River out of Buffalo, N.Y.

Classic Bracket Tournament On Niagara River Will Be First Of Its Kind For B.A.S.S.

BUFFALO, N.Y.  — In nearly three decades of professional bass fishing, Kevin VanDam thought he’d experienced every kind of competitive format the Bassmaster Tournament Trail could possibly throw at him.

But on July 19-22, KVD and seven others will be part of something new to professional bass fishing.

That’s when the Bassmaster Classic Bracket tournament will be held on the Niagara River, with the Top 8 finishers from last week’s Elite Series event at Cayuga Lake competing in an angler vs. angler, bracket-style format. A total purse of $50,000 and a berth in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic will be on the line.

As the winner of the Cayuga Lake event, VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., will be the No. 1 seed and will face off against eighth-place finisher Drew Benton of Panama City, Fla., in the quarterfinals. Other quarterfinal matchups will include No. 2 Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., vs. No. 7 Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; No. 3 Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., vs. No. 6 Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas; and No. 4 Jacob Powroznik of Port Haywood, Va., vs. No. 5 Koby Kreiger of Bokeelia, Fla.

The Classic Bracket will feature — for the first time ever in a B.A.S.S. competition — a catch-weigh-release scoring system. That means competitors will have each bass they catch weighed on the water by judges and released immediately.

Also for the first time, Bassmaster LIVE will broadcast coverage of the entire tournament, from first cast until the fishing stops, with a camera in every boat. Fans can watch the LIVE show on Bassmaster.com Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and on WatchESPN and the ESPN app on Wednesday.

“We have a fantastic long-term partnership with ESPN,” said Mike McKinnis, producer of The Bassmasters TV show on ESPN2. “We’ll be testing the idea of live streaming Bassmaster LIVE on WatchESPN and the ESPN app for one day of the tournament, showcasing the sport to their very large audience.”

Only the heaviest five bass per angler will be counted, and there will be no post-tournament weigh-in.

“For the fans, it’s really going to bring a new look to the sport,” said VanDam, who holds the B.A.S.S. record with 22 career victories. “I know the coverage is going to be better. When you have a live camera on all of the competitors the whole time, that makes it a lot of fun.”

The quarterfinal matchups will play out over two days with Match One (VanDam vs. Benton) and Match Two (Powroznik vs. Kreiger) taking place July 19 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. ET. Match Three (Hite vs. Combs) and Match Four (Lee vs. Rojas) will be held the same day from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

“This event is what we all dream about — live, blow-by-blow coverage of B.A.S.S. competition with the world’s best anglers taking part,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “Now that the second day has been picked up by WatchESPN, it just enhances the prestige of this event.”

The anglers will make their initial runs by boat to their chosen locations before the start of competition, and official weights will be shown on Bassmaster.com via the same BASSTrakk function that shows unofficial weights during standard Elite Series events.

“You’re not competing against the fish here,” VanDam said. “You know you’ve got to beat this other guy or you go home. It’s a unique format, and I’m looking forward to it.”

The quarterfinals will continue July 20 with Match Three (Hite vs. Combs) and Match Four (Lee vs. Rojas) taking place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and Match One (VanDam vs. Benton) and Match Two (Powroznik vs. Kreiger) moving to the afternoon hours of 1:30-4:30 p.m.

The semifinal round on July 21 will pit the Match One winner vs. the Match Two winner and Match Three winner vs. the Match Four winner. The weights will go back to zero, and all anglers will fish six hours, from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

The winner of those two matches will advance to the July 22 championship round. With weights starting from zero again, the anglers will fish head to head from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. for the title.

Of the eight anglers involved, Kreiger likely has the most to gain.

He’s currently ranked 72nd in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, and only about the Top 30 anglers in the final standings earn a berth into the Classic. With just two regular-season Elite Series events left, Kreiger is a long shot to qualify through that route.

“This is a golden opportunity for me,” he said. “The seven other are guys have already pretty much punched their tickets to the Classic. That gives me a chance to do something really special in this bracket.”

The payout for the bracket event will be distributed as follows: $10,000 and a Classic berth for first place, $8,000 for second place, $6,000 each for third and fourth place (eliminated from semifinals) and $5,000 eac h for fifth through eighth place (eliminated from quarterfinals).

Elliott Eases Into Lead At First Northern Open

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Checking social media reports helped Randy Elliott develop the game plan that has him leading the pro division of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open at Oneida Lake.

“I didn’t see anybody posting anything for the last week on big largemouth so I decided to stay with all smallmouth,” said Elliott, a veteran angler of Bassmaster Northern and Southern Opens. The Bowie, Md., angler caught a five-fish limit of smallmouth bass weighing 19 pounds, 3 ounces to take over the pro-division lead.

The smallmouth bite was early and often for most of the top contenders including Elliott, who had his limit by about 8 a.m. However, while other anglers struggled to catch fish later in the day, Elliott kept catching them.

“The fish are postspawn,” he said. “They are hungry and feeding up. There are lots of baitfish around. Every time I caught a fish it was coughing (baitfish) up.”

The weather was sunny with a light north wind today, but the forecast calls for clouds and rainstorms throughout Friday. Elliott doesn’t expect the weather to change his pattern.

Bird watching is usually a good way to find schooling smallmouth on Oneida as the diving seagulls indicate baitfish and bass activity on the surface, but neither Elliott nor Thursday’s runner-up Derek Yasinski relied on the birds to find their fish.

“I found five or six places this week (in practice) where I knew fish were there,” said Elliott. The government contractor decided to key on those spots rather than run around looking for bird activity.

“We saw some birds later this afternoon, pulled up on them and caught a few little fish, but I am not fishing the birds,” Yasinski said.

Yasinski caught his limit in about his first 30 minutes of fishing and finished the day with 18-9.

“Then we jumped around and caught one or two here or there,” said the 29-year-old machinist from Senoia, Ga. “I tried to catch a bigger fish (after catching his limit), but I mostly went prefishing so I could hopefully catch a decent limit tomorrow.”

Other pro division anglers in the Top 5 include Jesse Tacoronte, Orlando, Fla., third place, 18-0; Wesley Strader, Spring City, Tenn., fourth, 17-7; and Mike Shumanis, Bethlehem, Pa., fifth, 17-6.

Local angler Andrew Hammond took advantage of a one-hour spurt in the middle of the day to catch a three-fish limit weighing 11-3 to move into first place in the co-angler division. The 38-year-old sales rep for a paint coating company lamented losing a fish that would have padded his lead.

“I dropped about a 4 1/2-pounder on my second cast, so I would have had about 13 pounds today,” said the Fulton, N.Y., angler.

Hosting this tournament is Visit Syracuse. The competitors will take off the next two days at 5:30 a.m. ET at Oneida Shores Park. Tomorrow’s weigh-in will be held at 2 p.m. at Oneida Shores Park, with the final weigh-in on Saturday being held at 3 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops in Utica, N.Y.

Back for the Attack: Kevin VanDam Stacks Second Big Win

Back for the Attack: Kevin VanDam Stacks Second Big Win
Humminbird® pro Kevin VanDam takes tops on New York’s Lake Cayuga
 [print_link]
RACINE, WI. (June 30, 2016) – Look into the eyes of a prize fighter and there’s an intensity there that the rest of us can only dream about. Sometimes the intensity burns bright and other times it flickers. But come hell or high water, real heroes never let that fire extinguish.
Michigan native Kevin VanDam, whom many consider the greatest bass angler of all-time, has seen peaks and valleys over his career. Forever humble, he’ll tell you he’s spent his time on the canvas and taken a few licks. And while some have questioned the champion’s ability to return to former glory, VanDam has stayed above the white noise, maintaining machine-like intensity and focus cast after cast, event after event, year after year. The true champion he is, he just keeps swinging.
Most recently, VanDam answered the bell with two Elite Series wins in almost as many weeks. On Toledo Bend, VanDam demonstrated his genius for deep-water cranking (complete with 8-11 giant) and the Cayuga win only serves as an exclamation point to let everyone know he’s still got it.
Kevin went into Day 4 in third place, but weighed 15-7 to finish first with 71-13. Jordan Lee took second with 70-12.
Kevin may have been down for the count, but he’s back, and there’s a fire in his belly that could fuel even more big wins. Kevin’s win at the Busch Beer Bassmaster Elite on Cayuga Lake marks his 22nd major victory and approximately $6 million in career winnings.
Although the greatest bass angler of all-time, he’s still mortal.
VanDam can’t see under the water—and the fish are glad for that. But he is a whiz when it comes to using today’s top fish-finding technologies to locate structure and fish—like LakeMaster® mapping, and patented Humminbird technologies including Side Imaging®, Down Imaging®, 360 Imaging® and 2D SONAR—via a HELIX 12 CHIRP unit at the bow and an ONIX 10 and HELIX 10 at the console.
“To fish at the level I do, you really have to know what’s going on under the water’s surface. My Humminbirds are literally my eyes to see underwater. Side Imaging has played a huge role in my success over the years and helped substantially on Cayuga, too. I was able to find patches of hard bottom in the grass and that’s where the bass were,” said VanDam.
This HELIX 10 SI screen capture illustrates the kind of grass-to-rock transitions where KVD caught winning bass on Lake Cayuga. Note the zoom box in the Side Imaging view (right).
Following some good sight fishing on Thursday, VanDam turned to fishing the lake’s grass flats and shallow interspersed weeds for cruisers, where he flipped, threw a wacky-rigged Strike King KVD Ocho worm, and a KVD jerkbait on the final day.
We’ve all heard the saying “don’t pull a tiger’s tail.” It’s universally accepted that when you awaken a predator it’s a bad deal. That said, competitors beware—Kevin’s awake and there are still three tournaments left in the season. He’ll also fish the Bassmaster Classic Bracket tournament on the Niagara River, July 19-22.

TAYLORVILLE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

TAYLORVILLE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (June 30, 2016) – Mike Daley of Taylorville, Illinois, correctly picked five of the top 10 finishers at last week’s Walmart Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour event on Lake Champlain presented by General Tire. For his picks, Daley won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, held in conjunction with the FLW Tour fishing tournament.

Daley said his experience with fishing in tournaments on Lake Champlain helped him formulate his team.

“I knew both smallmouth and largemouth bass were going to play a role in this event,” said Daley. “Shinichi Fukae won a tournament there with smallmouth in 2010, so I picked him. Austin Felix, who also is a smallmouth guy, was a bargain at $8 and ended up finishing in the top 10. That was really good. And considering his history on the lake, I had to have Scott Martin.”

Daley went on to say that the fantasy tools provided by FLW also helped him gain an edge over his fellow competitors.

“I watched the practice reports that were posted each night and used the angler profile pages to look up their previous finishes on the lake,” said Daley. “Those statistics, along with my own knowledge of the lake were really what got me the win.”

Finishing in second place was Will Storey of Dothan, Alabama, who won $1,000, and in third place was Ken Kraft of Columbus, Georgia, who won $500.

Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The 2016 Fantasy Fishing season consists of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.

To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of 10 anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights. Player’s modifications to their teams must be finalized by 11:59 p.m. EST the night prior to the tournament.

High-Class Glass Reimagined ST.Croix

High-Class Glass Reimagined

Four new super-premium St. Croix Legend Glass Casting Rods give anglers a fighting chance when feeding crankbaits and other continual motion lures to big bass

[print_link]

Park Falls, WI (June 30, 2016) – An savvy group of anglers prefer the unique qualities of glass to graphite in situations where a more forgiving rod is required. Especially when big predators like smallmouth and largemouth bass slash at crankbaits or other lures fished with a steady retrieve. The ideal crankbait rods have a soft enough tip to allow fish to eat without pulling hooks, but plenty of power for ripping lipless lures through the weeds and driving home meaty trebles. And once the fight is on, a competent cranker’s more moderate action is a great help in keeping hooks firmly locked in a hostile bass’s maw.

But is glass a thing of the past? Not when the rod wizards at St. Croix take the core properties of glass and lace it with unbridled technology.

New for 2017, St. Croix Rod announces its super-premium line of Legend Glass Casting Rods, a four-rod series born from 68 years of American rod-building know-how and the very best materials and components available. Each of these all-new rods delivers the full benefits of glass in its intended applications, plus the elevated feedback, increased strength, reduced weight and heightened manufacturing quality that are absent in the marketplace. Don’t let their traditional, deep-honey finish fool you. The attractive color is a throwback to the days when St. Croix pioneered color-impregnated glass. Neat, huh? Well, that’s where the similarity to any fiberglass rods of the past ends.

The Best Rods on Earth begin with the highest quality blank materials and expert manufacturing techniques and processes. These modern Legend Glass Casting Rods feature premium, linear S-Glass blanks built on St. Croix-exclusive Integrated Poly Curve (IPC)-engineered mandrels. Designed to eliminate all transitional points in the rod blank, IPC rods feature smoother actions, increased strength and greater sensitivity, while 100% linear S-glass is also stronger, lighter, higher in modulus and more dynamic than traditional, woven E-glass. The results are the finest, high-performance fiberglass rod blanks ever created.

Proof that St. Croix’s new Legend Glass Casting Rods are worthy of their name; each model is expertly outfitted with top-shelf, task-minded components.

Fuji® K Series Concept Tangle Free guides with Alconite rings and polished frames are ideal for super braid, mono and fluorocarbon lines. The sloped frames and rings on these premium guides work to effectively shed line tangles before they can cause problems. A Kigan hook-keeper keeps things tidy, while two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish protect all meticulously-administered thread wraps.

Cranking is tough business. Legend Glass Casting Rods are designed to minimize wrist and hand fatigue over extended fishing sessions, courtesy of split-grip, super-grade cork handles and angler-favorite Fuji® ECS reel seats with frosted silver hoods. The heaviest-duty Legend Glass model features an alternative Fuji PSS-SD palming reel seat, which places the trigger on the outside of the palm, rather than between the fingers, for extra comfort while fishing extremely deep-diving crankbaits.

Model LGC610MM: 6’-10” length, medium power, moderate action. Ideal for making shorter, precise casts with smaller, lighter crankbaits.

Model LGC72MM: 7’-2” length, medium power, moderate action. Highly versatile model built to handle a wide variety of crankbaits.

Model LGC74MHM: 7’-4” length, medium-heavy power, moderate action. Ideal for use with larger, deep-running crankbaits, including lipless lures.

Model LGC711HM: 7’-11” length, heavy power, moderate action. Ideal for the largest,

deepest-diving crankbaits.

We’ve all heard it… and many of us have uttered the words ourselves: “How did he possibly miss that with all those treble hooks hanging off it?” Well, crankbaits are highly popular and effective lures, but the fact remains that crankbait hookup ratios can suffer due to stiffness. Perhaps it’s time you owned some crankbait rods that give you a fighting (and hooking) chance. Handcrafted one at a time in Park Falls, Wisconsin, U.S.A., St. Croix’s new Legend Glass Casting Rods are super-premium, high-performance fishing tools built like no other fiberglass rods on the planet. With a retail price between $240 and $250 and backed by a 15-year transferable warranty and St. Croix’s Superstar Service, it’s the highest-class glass available to crank in success.
