Big Second Round Lifts Jordan Lee Into Lead At Cayuga Lake

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — Like many of the anglers taking part in the Busch Beer Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake, Jordan Lee found plenty of bedding smallmouth bass in practice.

The young Alabamian relied on those smallmouth during the first round for a solid catch, and he planned to do the same during Friday’s second round.

But a couple of hours after takeoff Friday, Lee could tell things just weren’t working out. So he went looking for largemouth and put together a catch of 21 pounds, 7 ounces that pushed his two-day total to a tournament-best 40-8.

Lee’s plan for Saturday is now clear.

“I’m done with the smallmouth,” he said. “I’m just going to go fish largemouth all day tomorrow.”

Lee, who is six days shy of his 25th birthday, keyed on one small grassy area of the lake. He said he was surprised to find as many fish there as he did.

In practice, the area only produced a handful of bites. But a change in weather conditions made the area easier to fish Friday.

“It was cloudy and windy in practice, and you couldn’t really see the grass,” Lee said. “Today, it was sunny, and I could see a lot better. I pulled up in that one little small section where I had those bites in practice, and I caught three good ones in about 20 minutes.”

Two of the fish Lee caught in the area were in the 4 1/2- to 5-pound range — and with a good limit in the livewell, he went looking for more smallmouth. But after a while, he abandoned the smallmouth strategy again and returned to his largemouth area.

“I went back there and culled one more fish,” said Lee, who weighed in three largemouth and two smallmouth. “There’s obviously some fish around there, and I know exactly where they’re going to be. But there are a lot of guys fishing in there.”

Lee also earned the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500 for being the second-day leader.

Virginia angler Jacob Powroznik (40-3) was just 5 ounces behind Lee, and Thursday’s leader, Japan’s Morizo Shimizu (40-0), was just 8 ounces back.

Powroznik, who brought in 18-5 Friday, said he’s been sight fishing for bedding bass in 7 to 8 feet of water. He believes he’s catching fish that many anglers aren’t seeing or have written off as uncatchable.

“The fish that are bedding out that deep are a lot harder to see,” Powroznik said. “So I think a lot of guys are probably just missing them. I can barely see them sometimes, and it’s hard to tell exactly how big they are.”

While Powroznik relied mostly on smallmouth for Thursday’s catch of 21-14, he targeted largemouth Friday. Unlike the smallmouth, which tend to bite quickly in a sight fishing scenario, he said the largemouth were a little tougher to catch.

“They’re definitely more time consuming,” Powroznik said. “I spent an hour and 20 minutes on one fish today. When I finally caught the fish, it weighed about 3 1/2 pounds.”

After taking the lead with 23-6 Thursday, Shimizu brought in a respectable catch of 16-10 Friday and only fell two places to third. He said he fished the same techniques in the same areas Friday, but probably caught twice as many fish.

“I caught eight to 10 fish the first day, and today I caught maybe 20,” said Shimizu, who speaks in broken English with a distinct Japanese accent. “The difference was, yesterday, I only caught big fish. Today, no big ones.”

Since the bedding smallmouth he found in practice have disappeared, Shimizu said he plans to continue fishing two main areas for largemouth — a small point and a grassy area.

“I need wind this time to catch fish,” Shimizu said. “Both spots have been good all day long. But today, the bigger fish bit in the morning. The first day, I caught biggest fish in afternoon.”

Florida rookie Drew Benton is fourth with 39-8, and Arizona pro Dean Rojas is fifth with 39-7. Michigan superstar Kevin VanDam is in sixth place with 38-15.

It took a whopping mark of 33-3 to make the Top 50 cut for Saturday’s semifinal round. It was easily the highest total needed to make the cut for the 2016 Elite Series season.

Louisiana pro Greg Hackney, who had his Day 1 catch disqualified for a rules violation, caught 15-4 and finished the event in 107th place. Alabamian Gerald Swindle, who moved into the lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race after Hackney’s DQ, caught 19-10 Friday and rocketed from 44th place to 15th with a two-day mark of 36-10.

Swindle now holds a 45-point lead over Powroznik in the Angler of the Year race. Hackney has fallen into fourth place in the AOY standings, 62 points out of the lead.

The tournament will continue Saturday with only the Top 50 anglers remaining. Only the Top 12 will advance to Championship Sunday.

Daily takeoffs will be at 6:15 a.m. ET from Frontenac Park, with weigh-ins back at the park each day at 3:15 p.m.

FLORIDA’S MARTIN EXTENDS LEAD ON DAY TWO OF THE WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRESENTED BY GENERAL TIRE

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 24, 2016) – Pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds even to extend his lead after Day Two of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Champlain presented by General Tire. Martin will bring a 3-pound, 9-ounce advantage into Day Three of the four-day competition that features 160 of the top bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

In second place is Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland, who weighed in a five-bass limit totaling 21-5 Friday – the largest of the day – for a two-day cumulative total of 10 bass worth 38-12. The field is trimmed to the top 20 on Saturday, with only the top 10 anglers fishing on final day Sunday.

“This lake has been has been special to me,” said Martin, who has earned more than $2.39 million in FLW competition. “The first time I won in 2004, I did it with all spawning fish. The second time around in 2009, it was all largemouth. This time, I’ve got a mixture of both which I’m excited about.”

Martin said he returned to his area from Day One – an offshore location in the northern end of Lake Champlain that he refers to as ‘the reef’. He said he is rotating between four different baits, but withheld any specifics about their presentations.

“I only caught one good largemouth from the reef today,” said Martin. “I moved around and caught another decent one, but they’re not out there like they were yesterday. I know some little sweet spots here and there that I can milk. That’s my strength out there right now.”

In addition to the two largemouths, Martin said he rounded out his limit with three smallmouths.

“Thanks to the slick conditions, I was able to sight-fish for the smallmouths,” said Martin. “I had to run about 15 minutes for them, but I also had some other spots that I wasn’t able to check. If the weather is nice tomorrow, I’m going to go there again and see what is left.”

The Florida veteran said he plans to spend Day Three covering new water.

“For me, it’s all about confidence in your strengths,” said Martin. “I like to sight-fish, and I like to target largemouth in open water. With those two at my disposal, I have a lot of confidence in this lake.”

5 Overlooked Summer Frog Fishing Targets by Walker Smith

5 Overlooked Summer Frog Fishing Targets

Walker Smith

June 20,2016

It’s no secret that topwater frogs are incredibly productive in warm weather, but Elite Series pro Dean Rojas urges anglers to broaden their horizons when it comes to finding optimal areas.

The effectiveness of summer topwater frog fishing is well documented; these lures’ ability to reach and catch heavy-cover bass is undeniable. When most bass anglers think of frog fishing, however, rather stereotypical visions of lilly pad fields and thick vegetation flood our minds. The two go together like, as Forrest Gump would say, peas and carrots.

But there’s much more to a solid frog bite than grass, according to Elite Series pro and frog fishing legend Dean Rojas. He believes that by targeting lesser-known frogging targets, you’ll have an opportunity to catch some huge limits of bass this summer.

Here’s his challenge to you: The next time you go to the lake, bring only a frog rod and ditch the grass. Instead, target these areas and your eyes will quickly be opened to the versatility of these special bass fishing lures.

Jenko Fishing CD25 Deep Diving Crankbait Review by Jason Sealock June 20,2016

Jenko Fishing CD25 Deep Diving Crankbait Review

Jason Sealock

June 20,2016

Here is a great review of a new deep diving crankbait for bass fishing anglers will want to check out!

The window for throwing deep diving crankbaits is not very large, so testing them can be a bit tricky. You can catch fish throughout the warmer months and some in cooler months on deep diving crankbaits. But the best bite definitely occurs within the first month after post spawn bass move deep. So I’ve had a lot of deep diving crankbaits on my deck including a new one from a new company—the Jenko Fishing CD25.

My first real experience throwing the Jenko Fishing CD25 was one of the more memorable days of fishing I’ve had in a while. I was fortunate to find a new big school of bass on Kentucky Lake. I say new in that the bass had just grouped up on this particular spot and were not bait weary yet. To say the CD25 caught them would be a massive understatement. For more than 45 minutes I caught bass in the 2 to 6-pound range on nearly every cast, save for a couple times I had to reposition the boat in the wind to reach the sweet spot again.

Japanese Angler Morizo Shimizu Takes Lead As Elite Pros Put On Big Show At Cayuga Lake

Japanese Angler Morizo Shimizu Takes Lead As Elite Pros Put On Big Show At Cayuga Lake

[print_link]

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — As a native of Osaka, Japan, Morizo Shimizu doesn’t speak quite as much English as the average angler on the Bassmaster Elite Series.

But he knows the words “Big Momma” very well.

That’s the nickname he uses for the size bass he likes to catch — and on Thursday, he caught five of them.

Shimizu, an 11-year veteran of the Elite Series, brought 23 pounds, 6 ounces to the scales and took the first-round lead in the Busch Beer Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake. His catch was anchored by a 6-3 largemouth that he said came during the afternoon hours.

“I catch about eight fish all day,” Shimizu said in his usual broken English. “But I only catch five big ones. I caught fish early and late — all day long — from about 5 feet of water. But the biggest one came during afternoon.”

Including Shimizu’s mammoth catch, the 107-angler field produced 12 bags that weighed 20 pounds or more. It took 19-5 to make the Top 20 and 16-15 to make the Top 50 — the highest Day 1 mark needed to make the Top 50 this year.

Spawning smallmouth played a role for many anglers, but Shimizu opted to fish for largemouth because the smallies he located during practice had disappeared.

“I saw some on beds, but they had gone,” he said. “I don’t know if somebody caught them or if they just left. But they weren’t there anymore.”

New Jersey pro Michael Iaconelli was second with 21-15 — and like Shimizu, he chose to concentrate mainly on largemouth.

He said two quick flurries helped him to his big limit.

“It was all timing for me,” Iaconelli said. “I’ve been fishing here long enough to know that you get them in little spurts. If you can be in the right area when they’re feeding, it happens so quickly.
“I had one flurry early that lasted about 30 minutes and a second one later that lasted about 40 minutes — and without those today, I would have only weighed in about 15 or 16 pounds.”

Iaconelli also said luck played a role in what he termed a “magical day.”

With a big limit already in the livewell, he said he was lingering in a good area, mainly to keep other anglers away. When another competitor approached, Iaconelli picked up an unlikely lure.

“I just picked up a different lure and chunked it out away from the spot I was sitting on,” Iaconelli said. “This lure … there was no way it should have worked. But I caught a 5 1/2-pounder on it.

“That’s the kind of day it was for me.”

Because Iaconelli is targeting postspawn largemouth, he said he might have a better chance of bass moving into his areas — “replenishing” in bass jargon — than some of the pros who are zeroing in on bedding fish.

Virginia angler Jacob Powroznik went the other route Thursday, mostly sight fishing for the spawning smallies that he found during practice. He said he used a topwater bait with no hooks to locate the fish while practicing — and he was shocked by their size when he went back to the catch them.

“I didn’t actually fish for them when I was practicing. I just went over the top of them,” said Powroznik, who weighed in four smallmouth and one largemouth. “I thought they were maybe 3 or 3 1/2 pounds, but they ended up being 4 1/2-pounders.”

Powroznik said he has more fish in reserve, and he believes the conditions will be even more conducive to his kind of fishing Friday.

“It’s supposed to slick off and be really calm, so I like my chances,” he said. “I’ve still got a good many largemouth left that I know are 3 1/2- to 4-pounders. So we’ll just have to see what happens.”

South Carolina angler Britt Myers, who won an Elite Series event earlier this year at South Carolina’s Winyah Bay, is fourth with 21-3, and Arizona angler Dean Rojas is tied with Connecticut pro Paul Mueller in fifth with 20-9.

Shimizu took the lead in the race for Phoenix Boats Big Bass with his 6-3 largemouth, and Louisiana pro Greg Hackney maintained his lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race with 17-8 that landed him in 36th place after one day of competition.

The tournament will continue Friday with a full field of 107 anglers. The field will be trimmed to the Top 50 for Saturday’s semifinal round and to the Top 12 for Championship Sunday. Daily takeoffs will be at 6:15 a.m. ET from Frontenac Park, with weigh-ins back at the park each day at 3:15 p.m.

FLORIDA’S MARTIN LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRESENTED BY GENERAL TIRE

FLORIDA’S MARTIN LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRESENTED BY GENERAL TIRE

Connecticut’s Gagliarducci Leads Co-Anglers

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 23, 2016) – Pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 22 pounds, 5 ounces to take the lead after Day One of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Champlain presented by General Tire.

Martin targeted areas on the northern end of Champlain, catching a limit consisting entirely of largemouth bass to lead the field of 160 anglers in the four-day tournament that features top bass-fishing anglers from around the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

Canadian angler Chris Johnston of Peterborough, Ontario, is in second place with 21-2, while Alex Davis of Albertville, Alabama, is in third place with 19-13.

Martin, who won the coveted Angler of the Year title last season, is seeking his third career win at Lake Champlain in FLW Tour competition. He won previously in 2004 and 2009 visits and has earned more than $450,000 on Champlain in his 17-year professional career.

“This lake has been good to me over the years and I had a really good day again today,” said Martin. “I caught them off of five different areas and bounced around a bit. I’m doing something a little different than I usually do here bait wise, and it played a big part today.”

Martin said that he mixed it up and caught fish on four different baits, but wasn’t ready to divulge any specifics. He said that he caught around 15 fish throughout the day.

“I’m not catching a ton of fish, but they are very healthy,” Martin said. “They are fat and don’t look beat up. I had 17 pounds in my livewell by mid-morning. The different lure seemed to be getting bit better than everything else.

“It’s hard to say what is going to happen tomorrow,” Martin continued. “I didn’t have to share any of the areas that I was fishing today, so I hope I’ll be able to do the same tomorrow. There are a lot of fish up there and I think I might have something special figured out.”

Greg Hackney’s First-Day Catch Disqualified

Greg Hackney’s First-Day Catch Disqualified

[print_link]

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — Louisiana angler Greg Hackney came into this week’s Busch Beer Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake with a commanding lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race — and it seemed for a while on Day 1 like he had maintained that lead.

Hackney caught 17 pounds, 8 ounces to land in 36th place, but it was announced after Thursday’s weigh-in that his catch had been disqualified.

“Greg Hackney’s Day 1 catch was disqualified for fishing in an off-limits area,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “ There are several of these off-limits areas on Cayuga Lake. These areas were marked and confirmed with law enforcement. Then we took several steps to make the anglers aware of the areas, including posting them at the pre-tournament meeting Wednesday night.”

Hackney could not be reached for comment.

On glacier lakes in New York, state law says all man-made marinas and boat basins are private property. There are 11 such areas on Cayuga.

After the disqualification, Hackney fell from first place to fourth in Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, 37 points behind new leader Gerald Swinde. Jacob Powroznik is second, followed by Takahiro Omori.
