POTOMAC RIVER SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION OPENER PRESENTED BY PLANO

POTOMAC RIVER SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION OPENER PRESENTED BY PLANO

[print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (June 7, 2016) – The Costa FLW Series is headed to the Potomac River June 16-18 for a tournament presented by Plano when as many as 400 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the first stop of 2016 in the Northern Division.

“The Potomac is fishing phenomenally right now,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland, who has 18 career top-10 finishes on the Potomac River in FLW competition. “It’s getting back to old form when we saw 15- or 16-pound limits on a daily basis. We’re seeing a lot of anglers needing five bass worth 20 pounds to win some recent local tournaments. It’s a great time to be fishing this river.

“I see areas on the south end, near Aquia Creek, being a big factor in this event,” Schmitt continued. “There’s a lot of man-made riprap and rocky shorelines to tackle. Vibrating jigs, swimjigs and red-colored worms will be popular baits. The grass is a lot thicker than it has been in years, so I think we’ll see a strong frog and jig bite as well.”

Schmitt said that boat docks could also produce some quality limits for competitors.

“There are so many different options for anglers to catch fish out there,” said Schmitt. “The bass will primarily be postspawn, which means they’ll be actively feeding. It’s going to be exciting.”

Schmitt predicted that a three-day catch weighing 50 pounds will win the tournament.

Anglers will take off from Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day. Weigh-ins each day will be held at the State Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. This event is being hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners.

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z175 with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 3-5 on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

CHURCH HILL’S GRIMM WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE VOLUNTEER DIVISION EVENT ON CHEROKEE LAKE

CHURCH HILL’S GRIMM WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE VOLUNTEER DIVISION EVENT ON CHEROKEE LAKE

Ball wins co-angler title

[print_link]

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (June 6, 2016) – Brant Grimm of Church Hill, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 15 ounces, Saturday to win the fourth FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division tournament of 2016 on Cherokee Lake. For his victory, Grimm took home $6,159.

“I spent my day on the Holston River fishing shallow bars and flats where the bass were pulling up to feed on shad,” said Grimm, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I only had six bites all day, but I caught a 6-pounder within my first 20 casts. That fish really anchored my limit.”

Grimm said he needed only one 50-yard stretch to catch his winning bass.

“After the 6-pounder, all of my bites were about an hour apart,” said Grimm. “On my final cast I was able to make a small cull, which helped, but it was really that early big bass that sealed the deal for me.”

Grimm said he used one bait during the tournament – a shad-colored swimbait from Foolin’ Bass Custom Baits.

“They poured it to my exact size and color specifications and it really made a difference,” said Grimm. “It was a pretty straightforward day out there. Everything came together and it worked out.”

FLOWOOD, Miss. (June 6, 2016) – Timmy Smith of Petal, Mississippi, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 4 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mississippi Division tournament on Ross Barnett Reservoir presented by Power-Pole. For his victory, Smith took home $5,103.

Smith said he began his day fishing an assortment of brush piles on a hump near the dam. He said he positioned his boat in approximately 15 feet of water while he casted into 7-foot ranges.

“It was one of those areas where you can sit all day and not catch anything, or you can get some good, quality bites fairly quickly,” said Smith, who earned the first win of his FLW career. “In three hours, I caught three good-sized fish – two on a Carolina-rigged, Plum Apple-colored Zoom Ol’ Monster Worm and one on a custom green-pumpkin-colored jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw.”

Smith said he followed a similar pattern throughout the day at nearby humps, ledges and points. He said he rotated between the two baits and boated an additional 12 keepers.

“We hopped around to about four or five more areas to finish out the day,” said Smith. “We caught a lot in terms of numbers, but only those first three had some size to them. I still had a great time out there.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (June 6, 2016) – Quincy Houchin of Mabelvale, Arkansas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 13 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Arkie Division tournament on Lake Ouachita presented by Power-Pole. For his victory, Houchin took home $3,386.

Houchin said he spent his day targeting grass, wood and bushes in two areas within the mid- and upper-lake regions of Ouachita.

“I followed a fairly basic pattern for this event,” said Houchin, who logged his second BFL win of the 2016 season. “I caught my limit on three baits – a white Heddon Zara Spook, a leopard-colored Spro Dean Rojas Bronzeye Frog 65 and a perch-colored 6th Sense Lures jig.”

Houchin said the Spook was the most productive of the three and that he caught the majority of his fish before 10 a.m.

“There wasn’t any deciding factor that forced me to switch baits,” said Houchin. “I basically followed my instinct when it came to the rotation.”

The Arkansas angler said he managed to catch seven keepers over the course of the event.

The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 6-8 Regional Championship on Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tennessee. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Benton High’s Richardson And McKinney Win Bassmaster High School Fishing Tournament

CLINTON, Ill. — Dailus Richardson and Trevor McKinney of Benton High School win the Costa Bassmaster High School Midwestern Open on Clinton Lake with 16 pounds, 9 ounces.

The Illinois teammates took the title in their home state by a slim 7-ounce margin over Cole Miles and Dillan White of the Southside Anglers Club. The winners used a two-pronged approach to overcome windy conditions on Clinton Lake and vault to the top of the 63-team field.

“Right now is a really tough time to catch fish on Clinton,” McKinney said. “There is a hot portion of the lake and then a cooler area, so the fish are doing so many different things. Having knowledge of this fishery really helps.”

The teammates showed their versatility by fishing out of their comfort zone and deeper than they normally like to. A key bait for the one-day tournament was a custom shaky head created by Richardson paired with a Zoom Magnum Trick Worm. McKinney also boated his fish on a Zoom 10 1/2-inch Ol’ Monster Worm.

Patience was a big factor as fishing in the early morning was slow, which the pair blamed on a dozen other teams fishing near their starting spot.

“We weren’t thrilled when there were a lot of boats to start the morning, but we figured most would leave after an hour so,” McKinney said. “After most left, we were able to hit the key spot we wanted. We caught a 3-pounder, and Dailus boated the 5-5 that anchored our weight.”

Weather conditions were a challenge, with partly cloudy skies and sustained winds in the teens and gusts up to 20 mph. Those windy conditions helped keep the pressure of tournament anglers from effecting Richardson and McKinney’s area because it was hard to stay on the main lake all day.

At the halfway point in their day, they only had three keeper bass and knew they needed to change their strategy. The Benton anglers moved to shallower water, where they caught two more bass and filled their limit.

“We caught a couple (of bigger) fish shallow in practice, so we had confidence to do that today,” Richardson said. “After fishing shallow we went deep to finish the day, and we caught another 5-pounder before we came in.”

The Benton High School seniors were recently named to the prestigious Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. They will attend this week’s GEICO Bassmaster BASSFest presented by Choctaw Casino Resort on Lake Texoma, Oklahoma, where they will fish with Elite Series pros in their own competition. The teammates have committed to fish for McKendree University on scholarship. In addition to the trophies for winning the Midwestern Open, they each received $2,500 per year in additional scholarship funds from McKendree University.

Dayten Schureman and Chance Fears of Rogers High School Bass Club took home the Big Bass Award for their 5-10 largemouth.

The Top 6 teams from the Midwestern Open punched their ticket to the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship later this summer on Kentucky Lake pending any double qualifications that may arise.

Swift Creek Reservoir Fishing Report – June By Charlie Machek

Swift Creek Reservoir Fishing Report – June

Rain, rain, and more rain has been the theme of this Spring, but the end of May has finally showed us a little of that Summer heat. All of the rain, in combination with a new carp stocking has the water extremely muddy, so I have been using either dark (black, blue, purple) or bright (chartreus, yellow, bright green) colors. Hopefully some vegetation growth will help the water clarity as we get into summer. With the heat of the day warming the water up to the 70’s and 80’s the largemouth bass have finished up their spawning season, and are all in the “postspawn” phase of the year. This means that they are feeding up on shad, bluegill, and any other bait species to recover the weight and energy they lost while spawning. They are also on the move back to the deeper water of the main lake. If you can find any aquatic vegetation that the grass carp have not eaten (I have only seen a very little bit as of May 31), that is a great place for these fish to stop and feed on the way. Weedless texas rigged soft plastics, weedless swimbaits, and topwater lures are great for areas with some grass left. If the grass is near deep water, or a creek channel even better. Another place to concentrate your efforts are the many submerged main lake points. Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, and one of my favorite baits for this month: diving crankbaits (6’ – 10’ diving depth). If the shad move out deeper into the 10’-15’ range you have to move out with them as the bass will follow. Carolina rigs, and deep crankbaits will still work, and I will also try a heavy weighted swimbait, or a big casting spoon. Keep your eye out for balls of schooling shad, as the bass will typically be nearby. If you are not ready to abandon the bank fishing, target anything that creates a shade line: docks, laydown trees, and grass lines are perfect examples. Anywhere that has shad, or bluegill present will increase your chances of a bite. The fishing during the sunrise and sunset this month can provide some exciting topwater strikes. I like to throw a buzzbait, spook style walking bait, or a popper during the low light times.
Panfish: The Brim are going to remain in the shallow for most of June. Find shaded banks, with overhanging trees and shrubs, and there will likely be brim around. The brim typically spawn around the full moon in these same areas. Just like in May brim can be caught on a variety of baits, the most effective being earth worms with a bobber. For Crappie fish around drop offs and submerged brush, keep moving until you catch a few, then slow down and thoroughly work the area. Occasionally you can find crappie feeding on the surface, look for small “boils” on the surface and use crappie jigs with grubs, minnows, and worms. Take a kid fishing, practice catch and release, and I’ll see you out on the water!
