SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON POTOMAC RIVER

SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON POTOMAC RIVER

[print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (June 4, 2016) – The Slippery Rock University team of Logan Pollman of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, and Tyler Sheppard of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, won the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference event on the Potomac River Saturday with five bass weighing 18 pounds, 1 ounce. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“This is the first time our club has ever won an FLW College Fishing event,” said Pollman, a senior majoring in exercise science. “We’re a small school so it really means a lot for our program.”

“I’m hoping we can get more people interested in the sport after a win like this,” said Sheppard, a senior majoring in biology. “It’s great exposure for our school and community.”

The duo said they spent their day concentrating on a large grass bed in water ½- to 2½-feet deep at the mouth of Mattawoman Creek. The bed, which stretched along the shoreline, was approximately 60 yards long and 25 yards wide.

“We started our morning throwing a black Snag Proof Ish’s Phat Frog where we could see weeds,” said Pollman. “We had a 6-pounder blow up on it within the first 10 casts which really helped set the tone for the day.

“We caught our limit fish sporadically throughout the event,” continued Pollman. “As the tide came in and pushed the fish deep, we slowed down and threw a Chartreuse Shad-colored Buckeye Lures swimjig. When the grass wasn’t folded over the top, we flipped a black and blue-colored Buckeye Lures Jig.”

The team said they also preferred a Tennessee Shad-colored Keitech swimbait when the tide receded.

“Every half-hour we got a decent bite and culled,” said Sheppard. “At 2 p.m., Logan was pulling up the trolling motor so we could head in to the scale and I caught a 3-pounder on the Phat Frog. That fish helped us secure the win.”

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2017 College Fishing National Championship are:

Hamilton Hammers Down Central Open Win

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Tennessee angler Skylar Hamilton won the pro division of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River by the slimmest margin possible.

The 21-year-old Douglas Lake guide bested Hattiesburg, Miss., angler Teb Jones by 1 ounce to win his first Open and qualify for the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic contingent upon his fishing the remaining two Central Opens.

Hamilton’s winning total of 45 pounds, 6 ounces earned him the grand prize of a $45,000 Triton 19TRX/Mercury 200 Pro XS rig and $8,277 in cash.

After catching a 19-pound, 4-ounce limit Friday, Hamilton found the fishing tougher in his primary area today.

“I did the same thing as I did (Friday), but the weather was a lot different this morning,” he said. “We had some storms roll through.”

His primary spot was a backwater area where he flipped to reeds. The area featured baby blackbirds falling in the water and a mayfly hatch, which triggered bluegill into eating the insects and bass feeding on the sunfish, he related.

“My fish were still there today, but they were smaller,” Hamilton said. “I don’t know if I wore them out, but there was another guy in there with me. We planned on fishing there together and everything worked out well.”

Hamilton managed to catch a small limit there by about 10 a.m. and then left for his second spot close to the Three Forks Harbor, where he fished around current breaks.

“I would just flip into those eddies that I knew had fish in them because they had nowhere else to go,” Hamilton said. “They weren’t going to be out there swimming around in that current.”

He was able to cull out some fish at that stop and finished the day with a 12-6 limit.

The Tennessee angler spent all three days flipping a Texas rigged Berkley Havoc Pit Boss in the Okeechobee craw color with a 1/4-ounce weight and a 4/0 Gamakatsu Heavy Cover Flipping Hook.

Runner-up Jones did “the exact same thing” as he did the two previous days to catch his 13-9 limit today.

“I fished eddies and slack water around gravel bars and upstream and downstream of islands,” said Jones, who finished the week with 45-5.

His main lures included a Strike King Shadalicious hollow body swimbait on a 1/2-ounce jighead, a V&M swim jig with a plastic craw trailer and Texas-rigged V&M Baby Swamp Hog.

“All of my big fish this week came on the swimbait and the rest came about equally on the swim jig and the Swamp Hog.”

Finishing in the Top 5 of the pro division were Jason Christie, Park Hill, Okla., third with 45-3; Keith Poche, Pike Road, Ala., fourth, 43-5; and Lee Livesay, Longview, Texas, fifth, 42-6.

Fishing in his first Open, Joe Nance of Pearland, Texas, won the co-angler division and the top prize of a $30,000 Triton 179 TRX/Mercury 115ELPT Four Stroke package with a three-day total of 21-3.  The 58-year-old retired Houston firefighter caught some of his bass on a spinnerbait but the majority bit a Texas rigged black-and-blue Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver that he flipped to reeds and shallow bushes.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 went to Mark Goines of Shady Point, Okla., with a 6-1 largemouth. Vernon Sliver of Boutte, La., weighed in 5-12 largemouth to earn the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award on the co-angler side worth $250.

Hamilton also received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Day 2. Finishing as the Day 2 leader on the co-angler side, Robert Fortner, Conway, Ark., received a Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250.

Hamilton earned the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $500 for being the highest-finishing angler using A.R.E. products.

Gerald Spohrer of Gonzales, La., earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $500.

CLINTON, Ill. — Lance Freeman and Chandler Christian of Murray State University surprised even themselves by bringing in a huge limit on the final day to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwestern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on Clinton Lake Saturday.

What they thought would be their toughest day of the three-day tournament was actually their best as they brought in a limit of five bass weighing 20 pounds, 4 ounces, their biggest catch of the week. The haul gave them a total of 57-5 and a nearly 6-pound margin over their nearest competitor, the McKendree University team.

Clinton Lake suited the Murray State duo as they fished the way they do back home on Kentucky and Barkley lakes. Fishing offshore was the key. Their prime fishing area on the main lake produced all three days of the tournament, despite intense fishing pressure from the 93-boat field.

“I started to second guess this area today with the rain and clouds,” Freeman said. “As soon as I started doubting, I caught a 3-pounder. Then Chandler caught a 5-13, and we knew it was going to (pay off) slowly, but surely.”

As on the previous two days, the pair landed four keeper bass before 8:30 a.m., but they went on a three-hour dry spell had to calm their nerves before finishing their limit.

“We sat on four fish for a long time today,” Freeman said. “We ran around quite a bit and then came back. We settled our nerves, and then Chandler pulled out a finesse tactic and put the fifth fish in the boat. We culled a couple times real fast after that.”

The baits that vaulted them to victory were “old school” lures that have caught bass in deep water for years, and Freeman and Christian were comfortable fishing them. They relied on a 10-inch Zoom Ol’ Monster Worm in the plum color and a 7/16 to 1/2-ounce green pumpkin colored jig.

Along with the win, Freeman and Christian took home the Livingston Lures Leader Award worth $250 for each angler.

McKendree University’s Austin Chapman and Curtis Lilly brought the Bass Pro Shops Nitro Big Bag of the tournament to the scales on Championship Saturday and vaulted into second place. Their final day weight of 22-4 helped them earn the award and also surpassed the second biggest bag of the event by 2 pounds.

After stumbling Friday and only weighing three fish, Chapman and Lilly altered their game plan and capitalized on the weather change to catch the biggest limit of their lives. Local knowledge played a big part for the team as Chapman lives less than an hour from Clinton Lake.

“We were able to watch most of our areas in practice to see how many people fished them,” Chapman said. “We concentrated on three different areas, and knowing the lake was a big help when it came to managing spots.”

Like the winners, they too, used slow-moving bottom baits like jigs and shaky heads to catch the majority of their weight.

St. Cloud State University’s 7-7 largemouth from Day 1 of the event held up for the Carhartt Big Bass and Joachim Speldrich and Marcus Welk cashed in on the $500 big fish prize.

The Top 14 teams in the regional qualified for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship on Green River Lake in Campbellsville, Ky., July 28-30.

Murray State University Maintains Lead In Bassmaster College Regional

Murray State University Maintains Lead In Bassmaster College Regional

CLINTON, Ill. — Lance Freeman and Chandler Christian of Murray State University maintained the top spot after the second day of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwestern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on Clinton Lake with a two-day total of 37 pounds, 1 ounce.

The teammates caught 17-13 on a tougher Friday on Clinton Lake and have a 6-ounce lead over their nearest competitor. The second round of this college fishing event is normally considered moving day, and as a result the leaderboard experiences a shuffle as teams look to string two consistent days of fishing together. True to form, several teams vaulted up the standings, but none could overtake Murray State.

“A big advantage for us tomorrow is that we actually have the ability to run around and fish different areas that haven’t been pressured,” Freeman said. “With 93 teams cut to 20, the lake will be less pressured, so we may have free reign for our pattern.”

Friday’s fishing was a little slower for the duo as they had to sift through nonkeepers for much of the morning to slowly upgrade their weight. They caught four bass by 8:30 a.m., and at 10 a.m., they left to let their area rest. Once they returned they caught one of their biggest fish of the day.

“I definitely feel that fishing offshore is an advantage for us because I don’t think a lot of people do it up here,” Christian said. “We actually feel at home this week because we are fishing like we would back at Kentucky Lake.”

Normally, fishing offshore structure is better with sunny skies and the last two days have proved that for Murray State. Championship Saturday, on the other hand, has thunderstorms and cloudy conditions in the forecast, but you couldn’t tell that based on the duo’s confidence.

“If you lose confidence, you’re out of the game already,” Freeman said.

The second-place team of Andrew Mlotek and Calvin Vang of the Universtiy of Wisconsin-Whitewater brought the biggest bag of the tournament to the scales on Friday and closed the gap. Their 19-15 weight gave them an almost 3-pound cushion over third place.

Mlotek and Vang utilized moving baits on Friday as they adjusted their presentation to catch the highly pressured fish on Clinton. Heading into the final day they know adjusting will be crucial as they feel like they have burned through some of their areas and caught too many fish. Championship Saturday brings a new set of conditions and possibly more fish to their primary areas.

“We saw some contenders catch a couple fish in our area that we were saving for tomorrow,” Mlotek said. “I think the weather is going to make us switch up our plan, but I definitely will be happy with a limit tomorrow. It’s going to be a grind for us.”

The biggest factor for Mlotek and Vang hasn’t been a specific bait or a specific area, but rather timing and decision making as they negotiate the fine line between catching as much as possible while trying to manage their areas.

The 93-boat field was cut to the Top 20 after Friday’s weigh-in, and those teams will now battle for the Top 14 spots on Saturday’s competition day. The Top 14 spots after Saturday will clinch a berth to the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.

The final day takeoff will be at the Clinton Lake Marina at 5:30 a.m. CT while the weigh-in will take place at Forsyth Park in Forsyth, Illinois at approximately 2:30 p.m. CT.

Sky Is The Limit For Skylar Hamilton At Bassmaster Central Open

Skylar Hamilton of Dandridge, Tenn., takes the lead on Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #1 held on the Arkansas River out of Muskogee, Okla. Hamilton brought 19 pounds, 4 ounces to the scales at Friday’s weigh-in for a two-day total of 33 pounds even.

Sky Is The Limit For Skylar Hamilton At Bassmaster Central Open
[print_link]
MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Tennessee angler Skylar Hamilton took a slow ride today to move into first place in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River.

The 21-year-old Hamilton is running an aluminum boat which helps him get into skinny water areas, but he is concerned about his boat’s lack of speed.

“Going up current my speed is not good at all,” said Hamilton, who took over the lead in the pro division with a two-day catch of 33 pounds.

Fortunately for Hamilton, he found a place down river Thursday where he caught a quick limit.

“My little area is just a real shallow backwater,” he said. “It just looked good to me, and I knew it was going to be tough for fiberglass boats to get in there. I saw a couple there, but they kept getting stuck so they got kind of disheartened and went away.”

The Dandridge, Tenn., angler returned to the same spot today and caught another quick limit before moving to another spot.

“There is a really big bag in there because I don’t have much company with me,” said Hamilton, who guides on Tennessee’s Douglas Lake. “I would have probably caught more if I would have stayed in my area, but I just figured I needed to save it.”

When he moved to another spot he culled out two fish and finished the day with a five-bass limit weighing 19-4. “So I have a pretty good deal going on,” Hamilton said.

First-day leader Scott McGehee struggled today as he caught only two keepers, but his travelling buddy Teb Jones caught his second straight 15-pound limit (15-13) to take over second place with 31-12.

“I was doing the same kinds of things in the same area (both days),” said the Hattiesburg, Miss., angler. “I just had to catch every one that bit because it was slow.  I fished clean today, and I fished clean yesterday.”

Jones has noticed the fishing pressure is starting to affect the action in his area. “I leaned on my fish pretty hard the last couple of days to try to make the (Top 12) cut, and it is starting to show,” said Jones, who serves as the Mississippi B.A.S.S. Nation conservation director. “I fished hard, and I focused hard. The main thing is fishing clean because it is so hard to catch quality fish here even though the weights have been good.”

Rounding out the Top 5 in the pro division are Lee Livesay, Longview, Texas, third place, 30-5; Jason Christie, Park Hill, Okla., fourth, 30-4; and Chris Jones, Bokoshe, Okla., fifth, 28-5.

Being paired with Hamilton paid off for 49-year-old Robert Fortner who caught three keepers weighing 9-15 to take over the lead in the co-angler division.

“I fished the way I like to fish, and it was also the way he liked to fish, so it worked out for the both of us,” said Fortner. The City of Conway, Ark., water system superintendent has a two-day total of 16-4.

The Livingston Lures Leader Awards went to Hamilton for leading the pro division on Day 2 and Robert Fortner for leading the co-angler division.

The Muskogee Chamber of Commerce is hosting this three-day Open. Saturday’s launch will be held at Three Forks Harbor at 5201 Three Forks Rd. The weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops, 101 Bass Pro Drive, in Broken Arrow and will begin at 3 p.m. CT.

Murray State University Leads Opening Round Of Bassmaster College Tournament

[print_link]

CLINTON, Ill. — Lance Freeman and Chandler Christian of Murray State University grabbed an early lead in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwestern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops tournament on Clinton Lake with a five-bass limit of 19 pounds, 4 ounces.

They head into Friday’s competition with a 2-ounce lead and have high hopes of duplicating what they brought to the scales on Thursday.

“These fish change so much based on sunshine or clouds, so we are confident they will position like today,” Freeman said. “When the clouds roll in on Saturday, I’m not so sure what we will do.”

The day started fast for the Murray State anglers as they got their first bite much earlier than expected. They were able to put a limit in the boat before 8:30 in the morning.

“I think we caught 10 keepers today,” Freeman said. “We caught our five fish limit on one place and then left and caught some more in other areas. We tried to stay under the radar.”

Keeping a low profile may be the biggest key to their success this weekend because of the plentiful boat traffic and fishing pressure from 93 college teams on little Clinton Lake, which is only 4,900 acres. No other anglers shared their area today, which gives them confidence for another good catch on Friday.

The St. Cloud State team of Joachim Speldrich and Marcus Welk only brought four bass to the scales on Thursday, but they were the right ones as they weighed 19-2. The team trails the leaders by a slim margin.

Fishing was steady for the Minnesota natives as they plugged away all day and slowly put keeper after keeper in the boat. There was a buzz around this team soon after takeoff because one of their first bites of the day resulted in the big bass of the day.

“We didn’t really know what to expect coming into the day because our (practice fishing) was a little shaky,” Welk said. “We are just happy to be where we are right now; it’s very exciting.”

Happy is an understatement as this is Welk’s first week fishing solely for bass. The walleye angler saw that St. Cloud State had a bass fishing team so he decided to join. Today, Welk caught a 7-pound, 7-ounce largemouth that shot them up the leaderboard and set the bar for the Carhartt Big Bass.

Speldrich, the more experienced bass angler, was impressed with his partner’s ability to make an impact this early into the learning process.

The duo hit their primary spot multiple times throughout the day and each visit yielded a keeper bass. Their plan on Friday is to milk the spot for as long as they can so they can in hopes of putting together a heavy limit.

“We had No. 5 hooked up at the side of the boat,” Speldrich said. “It made one more run to deep water and it came off, but that’s fishing.”

The field of 93 teams will fish on Friday at Clinton Lake as they battle to make the Top 20 cut, which will fish on Saturday.

The anglers will take off from Clinton Lake Marina at 5:30 a.m. CT and will weigh-in there as well at approximately 1:45 p.m. CT.

McGehee Sticks Close To Take Lead On Arkansas River

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — While several contenders made long runs and played the lock game, Scott McGehee stayed close to take the lead today in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River.

“I might have burned 3 gallons of gas,” said the 55-year-old McGehee. “I am just not a lock guy. There is too much risk for too little reward.” The Madison, Miss., angler stayed around the Three Forks Harbor area and caught a five-fish limit weighing 16 pounds, 7 ounces to move into first place of the pro division.

During practice this week, Mcgehee and his traveling buddies, Teb Jones and Darold Gleason, worked an area that produced for all three anglers. “I pulled in there and caught them real quick this morning,” said Mcgehee, who owns a moving and storage company. “I had a limit by about 8:45 and I only upgraded once since then.”

Mcgehee said he was a “little bit” surprised by the quality of fish he caught today. “I know I can catch 9 or 10 pounds tomorrow, but I don’t think I can catch that big of a stringer again,” he said. “But these river fish replenish, so it should be pretty good.”

The Mississippi angler has been fishing Bassmaster events since 1996 but he has never won an Open. He has been in this spot before. He recalls leading an Open on Texas’ Sam Rayburn Reservoir in 2002 for two days but fell short on the final day.

Local favorite Chris Jones is in position to win his second Open on the Arkansas River as he finished the day in second place with 16-3. The Bokoshe, Okla., angler won the 2013 Central Open on his home waters and has won several local events in the month of June. Two weeks ago, he won a BFL tournament with 18 pounds, and he and his dad weighed in 18 pounds in a buddy tournament last week.

Jones said he is fishing the same pattern that has worked for him the last couple of weeks. He is lock through to other pools on the Arkansas River, making a round-trip run of about 140 miles. “I only have about three hours of fishing time,” said Jones, who was still catching fish when he left his area today.  “I am hitting specific spots that are all the same kind of stuff. I am just running as many spots as I can hit in a day.”

Other anglers placing in the top five of the pro division are Teb Jones, Hattiesburg, Miss., third place, 15-15; Lucas Ragusa, Gonzales, La., fourth, 15-14; and Brandon Lee, Ratcliff, Ark., 15-10.

Sulphur, La., angler Brian Murphy fished to perfection today as he got four bites and caught four bass to take over the lead in the co-angler division with a three–fish limit weighing 8-11. The 25-year-old college graduate has never fished the river before but Murphy said he got to “somewhat” fish his strengths. “It was kind of a junk fishing day,” he said.

Hosting the three-day event is the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce. Friday’s launch, weigh-in and the final day launch will be held at the Three Forks Harbor at 5201 Three Forks Rd. The final day weigh-in will shift to the Bass Pro Shops at 101 Bass Pro Drive in Broken Arrow.

How to Fish Offshore on Shallow Bowl Lakes David A. Brown

How to Fish Offshore on Shallow Bowl Lakes

David A. Brown

Thursday at 12:31 AM

Get bass offshore even on shallow lakes like you find in Florida in the heat of the summer with these great fishing tips.

In Florida and anywhere anglers fish shallow, bowl type lakes, the notion of “deep water fishing” is all relative. Nevertheless, a lot of the local bass actually do make an offshore move upon which anglers can capitalize.

Having sampled most of the nation’s top fisheries, FLW Tour pro Mike Surman is well-acquainted with what most envision when they hear the phrase “offshore fishing.” However, calling Lake Okeechobee his home waters, Surman also knows the opposite end of the spectrum holds its own challenges and opportunities.

“Generally, the offshore deep fisheries will have some type of structure; they’ll have a drop-off, a severe ledge, a big rock pile,” Surman said. “Some Florida lakes will have some of that, but in general, most Florida lakes are bowl-shaped that drop off gradually.

“A lot of what you find offshore in these lakes is manmade — like rocks from where a channel was dug.”
