BASS- With the rising water temps, the top water bite has finally started. Pop R’s, Buzz Baits, Walking Baits and Wake Baits will all draw explosive strikes from hungry bass. Fish around willow grass, stump fields, boat docks and rip rap. Day break until a couple of hours later will be the best times, however, you can still catch them throughout the day from boat docks. They will charge out from under a dock to smash a slow moving walking bait or popper.

Look for spawning bluegill and herring as well. Lots of fish will key in on this opportunity to grab an easy meal. Soft jerk baits, poppers, spinnerbaits and buzz baits are all great choices. Shallow crankbaits fished around bluegill beds will also draw strikes for you.

Once the morning feed is over, it is time to slow down. Shakey head rigged soft plastics are very hard to beat. Crankbaits that will dive down to 10 feet, spinnerbaits fished in and around the willow grass and Jig & Pig Combos will all catch fish. Rocks and boat docks in the Pamunkey arm fished with plastics or crankbaits are hard to beat.

There are lots of fry guarders out there at this time, if you catch one of these smaller male bass, please be sure to put him right back……..HE IS PROTECTING OUR FUTURE!!!!!!!!!
CRAPPIE-   The crappie have finally finished their spawn and are either headed back to deeper water or they are already in place for the summer. Look for them around the uplake bridge pilings, deep brush and deep boat docks. Small minnows rigged on a slip bobber will be the best way to catch them.

STRIPER-  The striper are now beginning to school up very well and are aggressively chasing baitfish to the top at first light. Broken back redfins, zara spooks and small swimbaits are all catching fish. After the feed is over, look for them to go deep and locate them with your electronics and drop toothache spoons to them.
If casting and jigging is not your thing, the trolling bite will begin to pick up with the rising water temps. Deep diving red fins with a 1/4-1/2oz  bucktail trailer or a Norman DD22 are my baits of choice.
Look for them from 208 to the splits and in front of Dike 1 & Dike 2. Lots of smaller fish in the Dike 3 area, lots of fun to cxatch if you are just looking for some rod action.
The Hybrid Striper (Wiper) are also getting really close to being the legal minimum length of 20 inches to keep. Pound for pound,  these fish are more aggressive and stronger than the striper.

Classic Champion Edwin Evers Partners With OPTIMA Batteries For Healing Heroes In Action Tour

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion Edwin Evers is teaming up once again with OPTIMA Batteries and a new partner, B.A.S.S., with live coverage on Bassmaster.com, to give deserving Purple Heart veterans a once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience in the OPTIMA Batteries Healing Heroes in Action Tour presented by General Tire.

Now in its second year, the Healing Heroes in Action Tour supports the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to serving the nation’s combat-wounded Purple Heart veterans through outdoor sporting activities.

“After a successful inaugural year, we’re honored to again bring these incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to veterans and fans nationwide in a way only OPTIMA Batteries can,” said Cam Douglass, director of marketing for OPTIMA Batteries. “The addition of new partners and sponsors, as well as our longstanding relationship with Edwin, only help extend the impact this program has on the lives of deserving veterans as well as the foundation.”

The tour is set to raise funds through a Facebook auction on Evers’ page, where fans can bid for a chance to fish against Evers and a Purple Heart veteran in one of four events across America. All money raised goes directly to the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation.

The 2015 tour raised more than $12,000 for the Foundation through five local events, but new partnerships with B.A.S.S. and presenting sponsor General Tire bring the tour to a national audience via livestream and extended coverage on Bassmaster.com.

“B.A.S.S. is truly honored to partner with OPTIMA Batteries and Edwin on the Healing Heroes in Action Tour,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “We have been blown away by our live audience, so this is the perfect platform to make the program and its efforts more accessible to fans.”

The first event is set to kick off June 13 on Lake Texoma in Durant, Okla., after the conclusion of the GEICO Bassmaster BASSfest, and continue with three more events coinciding with Evers’ travels on the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament trail. Bidding for the first event begins Wednesday, June 1 and concludes June 8.

“A day out on the water fishing with Edwin is a one-of-a-kind experience we’re grateful to be able to offer to our veterans,” said John J. McDaniel, founder of Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation. “Through this initiative and the camaraderie Edwin brings to the events, we are not only honoring the service of these veterans, but also promoting healing and wellness.”

Evers added, “I’m honored to support veterans through this program. It’s an opportunity to give back just a little bit to the people who give so much. The B.A.S.S. audience will be able to join us on the water this year through the live coverage, and I hope the show offers some teaching components and a few laughs!”

H2 Pro Tournament Scales Review [Terry Brown] Terry Brown

H2 Pro Tournament Scales Review

Terry Brown

May 30,2016

The H2 Pro Tournament Scales are very simple to use and incredibly accurate when money is on the line for tournament bass fishermen.

Accuracy is the key when weighing fish and money is on the line. No matter the conditions, anglers want an accurate measurement of their catch and cutting corners is not an option whether fishing for bragging rights, a club tournament or at the professional level. I cannot tell you how many tournaments I have seen or participated in where a hundredth of a pound separated the top place and second. The key is being able to accurately weigh the catch and not have the scales jumping back and forth.

I recently got to test a set of H2 Pro Tournament Scales from Franklin, Indiana’s ATC Industries and these are the best and most accurate tournament scales I have ever used.

If You Could Only Have One Fishing Rod, What Would it Be?

David A. Brown

May 30,2016

We asked 5 pros what one rod would they choose if they were faced with only having one rod to fish for an event or a year to help other budget minded anglers.

Theft, accidents; could the worst-case-scenario ever find you at a tournament or a road trip destination with just one rod/reel outfit? Unlikely, but if it happened what would you choose?

We talked to some of the sport’s top anglers, and we asked what they’d chose if faced with a one-rod scenario. Their strategies are worth noting, as limited budgets don’t have to limit your fishing ability.
