CEDAR LAKE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

CEDAR LAKE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

MINNEAPOLIS (April 21, 2016) – Donald Freundt of Cedar Lake, Indiana, correctly picked five of the top 10 finishers at last week’s Walmart Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour event on Beaver Lake presented by Jack Link’s. For his picks, Freundt won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, held in conjunction with the FLW Tour fishing tournament.

“I’ve been playing FLW Fantasy Fishing since it was launched in 1998,” said Freundt. “I’ve won smaller prizes in the past, but never thought I’d win this kind of money.”

Freundt said he primarily used the Member’s Advantage tools on the Fantasy Fishing website to conduct research for his team.

“In some cases I just went with guys who are having a good year – like Scott Martin,” said Freundt. “He’s a great angler and is consistently finishing high in the standings. For other selections, I used the search tool for local anglers. Sometimes I can find a great pick at a bargain price.”

Freundt said he is excited about his chances of winning the $10,000 grand prize, which awarded to the best Fantasy Fishing player in the world at the conclusion of the FLW Tour regular season.

“This finish definitely gave me a boost in the world standings,” said Freundt. “I think I’m sitting in 32nd overall, which is pretty amazing in itself.”

Finishing in second place was Curtis Wheeler of Indianapolis, who won $1,000, and in third place was Tommy Jarvis of Athens, Alabama, who won $500.

Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The 2016 Fantasy Fishing season consists of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.

To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of 10 anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights. Player’s modifications to their teams must be finalized by 11:59 p.m. EST the night prior to the tournament.

Bassmaster Elite Series Returns To Northern Alabama’s Wheeler Lake

Bassmaster Elite Series Returns To Northern Alabama’s Wheeler Lake

DECATUR, Ala. — If there is one area of the country where most of the Bassmaster Elite Series anglers feel most at home, it’s on any number of the Tennessee River reservoirs.

Following a tournament on the unfamiliar waters of Winyah Bay, and a uniquely formatted, four-day event held on both Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes, the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Wheeler Lake should bring some normalcy back to the schedule.

At 67,100 acres, Wheeler is Alabama’s second largest reservoir. As a bass fishing destination, it is often overshadowed by other reservoirs along the Tennessee River — renowned Pickwick Lake to the west and Lake Guntersville to the east. But those in the know believe Wheeler will in prime shape when the Elite Series gets under way Thursday, April 28.

“I really think this is going to be a great event,” said Bassmaster Elite Series angler Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala. “We’ll be on Wheeler during a time when the bass will be in multiple stages of the spawning process. We won’t likely find them in the prespawn phase, but we’ll definitely be catching fish that are on beds, and also those that have moved off beds and into deeper water.”

Horton said there will be a lot of different ways and locations to catch bass during this event, which will likely result in most of the 108-angler field weighing limits, with some very large bass sprinkled in the mix.

“For a while, Wheeler wasn’t the easiest lake in the region to fish,” said Horton. “The vegetation disappeared, and that made the fishing much less productive than it should have been. But in the past several years it’s come back strong, making it one of the top bass-fishing lakes in the state of Alabama.”

Horton estimates that in order to make the Top 50 cut on Saturday’s semifinal round, it will likely take 13 to 14 pounds each day. To win the event, he thinks 19 pounds per day will be required.

The last time the Bassmaster Elite Series made a stop on Wheeler Lake was in 2011, and Horton finished in eighth place. He lives just a short distance from the main boat launch, and has years of history on the lake.

When it comes to fishing history, who better to ask than a local fishing guide who has amassed nearly 40 years of guiding experience? Reed Montgomery, owner/operator of Reed’s Guide Service grew up fishing many of the Tennessee River impoundments, especially Wheeler.

“The fishery is in great health, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a largemouth bass close to 10 pounds,” Montgomery said. “What will surprise a lot of people are the amount and quality of smallmouth bass that will turn up during the daily weigh-ins. There are plenty of smallies that will weigh 3 to 4 pounds, but I’ve seen them come out of Wheeler weighing up to 6 and 7 pounds.”

While Montgomery believes the smallmouth will be a factor in the tournament, he said to take home the $100,000 first-place prize, the winner would need to focus on big largemouth.

“Wheeler really sets up as a largemouth fisherman’s dream lake,” he said. “There is an abundance of traditional bass-fishing structure, such as shallow flats, flooded timber, vegetation, bluff walls, rock and gravel points and creek channels. This time of year will have the fish really spread out and susceptible to numerous presentations, especially topwater.”

Montgomery estimates that the lake will be at full pool by the time the anglers begin practice April 25. With the stable weather and water conditions the region has been experiencing recently, he expects some 20- to 22-pound limits of bass brought to the scales.

Daily takeoffs will take place at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur, Ala., at 6:15 a.m. CT, and weigh-ins are scheduled each afternoon in the same location at 3:15 p.m.

A total purse of $638,000 will be paid to the Top 50 anglers. Those anglers will also earn points toward the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and qualification for the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Jin Nguyen turned around a bad practice session on Lake Guntersville by taking the lead at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Nguyen, of Kansas City, Mo., caught 4 bass weighing 21 pounds, 6 ounces, to take a narrow lead in the regional competition between bass clubs.

Close behind is Lee Byrd of Pell City, Ala., with 20-3, followed by Josh Nelson of Saint Bonifacius, Minn., with 19-14. Mark Nies of Cannelton, Ind., holds down fourth place with 19-4 and Chuck Campbell of Hartsburg, Mo., is fifth with 19-2.

“There was a lot of luck involved today because I caught only two bass during practice,” admitted Nguyen. “I went back to that same spot and the bass were there, obviously.”

Nguyen, like many anglers, is taking advantage of waves of largemouth bass leaving shallow water spawning areas. This is the postspawn timeline and the bass are moving to deeper water for the summer.

Success involves locating numbers of bass as they form schools on the ledges along the Tennessee River.

“I’m catching them as they are coming back out,” he added. “I’m not sure if there will be more coming through tomorrow.”

Call his day a combination of good timing and better luck. Nguyen came up one shy of a weighable limit, although his catch is just enough to take first place.

Competing on Lake Guntersville are B.A.S.S. club anglers from 19 states. To be determined are overall winners, the top finishing state team and qualifiers to bass fishing’s club championship.

That event is the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. The top boater and non-boater from each state advance to the championship.

Indiana’s 20 anglers collectively caught 192 pounds to lead the team standings after Wednesday. Arkansas holds down second place with 170 pounds, 1 ounce. Missouri is third with 154-5 and Minnesota has 152-4 for fourth place. Wisconsin is fifth with 149-3. Alabama is sixth with 146-6.

The state with the most weight is awarded a new bass boat and trailer. That is a Triton 189 TrX with Triton boat package accessories and a Yamaha VF150LA. Total package value is $37,293.

On Thursday, the tournament field is cut to the Top 38 boaters and non-boaters from each state to include each state’s top 3 anglers. That group competes on Friday for championship berths and overall titles.

Two anglers are paired with the boat owner, who is allowed to keep five bass. The accompanying angler can keep three bass. A keeper bass measures at least 15 inches for largemouth and smallmouth. Spotted bass measuring at least 12 inches also qualify as keepers.

Leading the non-boater division is Justin Harris of McPherson, Kan., with 14-4. Big bass of the day honors go to Brandon Pickett of Wichita, Kan. He caught a largemouth weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces.

The tournament begins at 6 a.m. CT with boats returning in staggered flight times beginning at 2:15 p.m. Tournament launch and weigh-in is at Guntersville City Harbor.

PLANO’S NEW T-SERIES TACKLE TOTES BRING THE BLING BUT WON’T BREAK THE BANK

TRENDING TACKLE BAGS SHOWCASE AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDES

PLANO’S NEW T-SERIES TACKLE TOTES BRING THE BLING BUT WON’T BREAK THE BANK

[print_link]

Plano, IL (April 20, 2016) – Competitive bassers to weekend casters, each angler works the water with his or her own brand of fishing flair; flat bill hat and Chuck Taylor Cons’ to skull cap with flip-flops. Dudes and dames each want statement-making gear that reflects their own ruggedly individualized attitude. So much the better if the stuff saves time and adds convenience.

Taming the totality of your tackle collection, of course, isn’t the easiest task on earth. So when all your jigs, cranks, topwaters, plastics, and swimbaits come together inside one stylish statement-making tote, somehow, it all makes setting the hook just a little sweeter. And perfectly portrays the progressive spirit behind Plano’s flashy yet functional T-Series Tackle Bags.

413940 T-Series Messenger Bag

The aggressive new-look totes extend a stand-out style—rad patterns brought back to earth by a subtle brown base color. Per usual, Plano engineers went a step further, employing a special fabric that’s softer, tougher and built around a quick-access enclosure.

Competitive minded T-Series bags gift anglers with a three-tier approach to toting tackle: the T-Series Tackle Bag, T-Series Power Bag and T-Series Messenger Bag.

“The 3600- and 3700-size Tackle Bags leverage a tried-and-true design that zips up around the top of your boxes with a front flap that easily buckles down to the base,” denotes Plano Director of Brand Management, Ryan Olander. “But we’ve upgraded this with even stronger, softer walls surrounding the bag.”

Olander adds that the T-Series Power Bag incorporates a totally new zipper-free design for granting immediate access to tackle. “This enlightened blueprint also moves the stress-point of the bag away from what used to be the zipper to the buckle-straps, assuring even weight distribution and more years of rugged performance than ever,” he says.

With a continuing flair for thinking ‘outside the bag,’ Plano’s new T-Series Messenger bridges the gap between “wearable” backpacks and traditional shoulder-strap designs. Says Olander, “This is accomplished by using a silhouette common in bags for other categories but sized specifically for fishing.” The main compartment of the Messenger Bag holds eight 3600 StowAway boxes or four 3700s, while the front pocket carries an additional 3600 or other gear. Two more zippered side pockets plus exterior slip-pockets assure ample storage and versatility to the max.

KENTUCKY LAKE SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

KENTUCKY LAKE SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. (April 19, 2016) – The Costa FLW Series is headed to Kentucky Lake on April 28-30 for a tournament presented by Lowrance when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the second stop of 2016 in the Central Division.

“We may very well see the bass in all three phases of the spawn – prespawn, spawn and postspawn – come tournament time,” said Strike King Lures pro Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tennessee, who has eight previous top-10 finishes on Kentucky Lake in FLW competition. “It’s still a little early to be catching them offshore, so I think that this tournament will likely be won shallow – bed fishing, or in the bushes.”

“We’re fixing to get quite a bit of rain here in the next couple of days, and the lake needs another foot of water to get up into the bushes,” Wooley continued. “If that happens, that is where this tournament will be won.”

Flipping creature baits, crankbaits, swimbaits, spinnerbaits and topwater baits were all mentioned by Wooley as possible winning baits and patterns.

Last year’s Costa FLW Series tournament on Kentucky Lake was won by Boy Scouts of America pro Tom Redington with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 71 pounds, 13 ounces. Wooley expects this year’s winning weight to be a bit smaller, but still thinks an angler will need at least 63 pounds to win.

“Last year the tournament had great timing and we had the perfect storm of conditions,” Wooley said. “The fish were swarming to the ledges while the tournament was going on. This year we’re a little earlier, but it’s still Kentucky Lake so you’re going to need to weigh in at least 20 pounds a day to win.”

Anglers will take off from Paris Landing State Park, located at 16055 Highway 79 N. in Buchanan, at 6:30 a.m. CDT each day. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-in will be held at the State Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart, located at 1210 Mineral Wells Avenue in Paris, beginning at 3:30 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The event is being hosted by the Henry County Alliance.

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z175 with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 3-5 on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE READIES FOR SECOND TOURNAMENT OF SEASON ON FORT GIBSON LAKE

FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE READIES FOR SECOND TOURNAMENT OF SEASON ON FORT GIBSON LAKE

[print_link]

WAGONER, Okla. (April.19, 2016) – FLW College Fishing is headed to Fort Gibson Lake on April 30 for the second of three regular-season bass-fishing tournaments in the Southern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“Fort Gibson Lake is fishing excellent right now,” said FLW Tour pro Andrew Upshaw, a former collegiate fishing standout from Stephen F. Austin University who now resides in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. “The lake is loaded with fish and the teams are going to be able to spread out and fish their strengths.

“They can run up the river where the water is dirty and throw spinnerbaits and squarebill crankbaits, or they can stay down in the clearer water and finesse fish,” Upshaw continued. “The fish are super close to spawning and a lot of them are coming from secondary points that lead into the spawning flats. I think targeting the inside edges of boat dock with big jigs and flipping baits will be a very strong pattern.”

Upshaw said that black and blue-colored baits would do better in the dirty water, while he would opt for green-pumpkin or watermelon red-colored baits in the clear water. He said that a team that concentrates on finesse fishing with shaky-head rigs should also do well.

“My advice would be to slow down and don’t get in too big of a hurry,” Upshaw said. “Fort Gibson is a really good finesse lake and there will definitely be quite a few fish caught on shaky-heads.

“Really study the maps as well,” Upshaw went on to say. “There is a lot of information out there as far as where the best creeks are, so really pick the area you want to fish based on your strength and put the time in. I think the winning team is going to weigh between 18 to 20 pounds.”

Anglers will take off from the Taylor Ferry Marina & Resort, located at 34179 Marina Drive in Wagoner, at 6:30 a.m. CDT Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Bass Pro Shops to Bid for Cabela’s – FTR Staff

Reuters news agency is reporting that Bass Pro Shops has partnered with a private equity arm of Goldman Sachs Group (a multinational investment banking firm) to make an offer for Cabela’s. The unidentified sources are “people familiar with the matter.”

According to Reuters, “The move gives Bass Pro the equity financing necessary to pursue Cabela’s and makes such a deal more likely, given the potential cost savings and synergies a combination of the two U.S. hunting and fishing retailers would bring.”

Bass Pro and Cabela’s are generally regarded as the number one and number two big box outdoor retailers in North America. Together they would form a giant worth upwards of $7 billion.

FLW WILL FISH FOR KIDS CHARITY TOURNAMENT RAISES MORE THAN $203,000 FOR ARKANSAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

FLW WILL FISH FOR KIDS CHARITY TOURNAMENT RAISES MORE THAN $203,000 FOR ARKANSAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

[print_link]

ROGERS, Ark. (April 19, 2016) – The Walmart FLW Tour anglers weren’t the only big winners on Beaver Lake last weekend – A record-breaking total of $203,894.60 was raised for the Dental Clinic at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Monday at the Will Fish for Kids Bill Kerr Memorial Charity Tournament on Beaver Lake presented by Quaker State.

Entry fees paid by pro contestants and Walmart employees, as well as corporate boat sponsorships, were collected prior to the event. That money, along with funds raised on Sunday night’s registration dinner and silent auction, combined to smash the previous record of $88,710 which was donated in 2015.

“This was just an incredible event to be a part of and I am so proud of everybody that stayed in Arkansas after the FLW Tour event and could participate,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Shirley Crain of Fort Smith, Arkansas, who was the honorary chair organizer for the event. “It was an honor to host this event and it warms my heart to know what we accomplished for the kids.”

Since 2005 Will Fish for Kids has raised more than $940,594 for the Dental Clinic at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

The tournament was won by Walmart pro David Dudley and Jason Piper, who also represented Walmart. The Walmart duo had a magical day on Beaver Lake, catching a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 7 ounces – larger than any limit ever before weighed in FLW competition at Beaver Lake. Though the charity tournament was not nearly as strenuous or stressful as a Walmart FLW Tour event, catching 23-7 on Beaver Lake was still quite a feat.

“We talk about lakes that you can make up ground at, like Okeechobee,” says Dudley. “At Beaver Lake, once you’re 5 pounds behind you’ve accepted that you’re not going to win. But after today I won’t ever count myself out again.”

The top 10 teams finished the tournament:

1st:          Walmart pro David Dudley and Jason Piper (Walmart), five bass, 23-7

2nd:         Old Spice pro Greg Bohannan and Tony Bauer (Anything Possible), five bass, 16-11

3rd:          Kerry Milner and Tom Martin (Northside Steel, Inc.), five bass, 15-6

4th:          David Knight and Kenneth Knight (Walmart), five bass, 14-14

5th:          Jay Johnston and Charlie Spooner (Walmart), five bass, 14-10

6th:          Walmart pro Mark Rose and Jim Enneking (Strike King), five bass, 14-5

7th:          Blake Smith and Chris Smith (Reynolds Consumer Products), five bass, 14-0

8th:          Bryan Thrift and Jeff George (Walmart/Charlie’s Worms), five bass, 13-12

9th:          Bobby Dennis and Michael Morgan (Luck-E-Strike), five bass, 13-7

10th:        Quaker State pro Jimmy Houston and Blake Stout (Quaker State), five bass, 13-5

A complete list of results can be found at WillFishForKids.com.

The Will Fish for Kids charity auction and tournament was started in 1992. In 2015, the tournament was renamed to the Will Fish for Kids – Bill Kerr Memorial Charity Tournament in memory of the late Bill Kerr.

Bill lived most of his life in Bentonville and worked for Walmart Stores Inc. for over 25 years. For the last several years Bill had been with Outdoor Cap, Inc. He also served on the board of Igloo Corporation. Bill enjoyed fishing and was a constant and enthusiastic supporter of the Will Fish for Kids tournament and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

All the money donated through this event goes to the Dental Clinic at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Dental problems are the number one reason for children missing school and if a child has dental problems, it has a direct effect on their overall health.

The Dental Clinic at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital also provides pediatric dental care for children with significant medical and/or developmental problems.
