GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (April 18, 2016) – Drew Boggs of Lebanon, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 21 pounds, 13 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes presented by Navionics. For his victory, Boggs took home $4,872.

Boggs said his morning was marred with equipment malfunctions that forced him to borrow a boat and return to the takeoff ramp for a mandatory boat inspection.

“After all of my troubles, I arrived at my area and threw my first cast at 10 a.m.” said Boggs, who earned his third win in FLW competition. “I spent the day on the south end of the lake flipping a green-pumpkin-colored Big Bite Baits soft-plastic into flooded bushes.

“The bushes I preferred were in two spawning pockets and had more water covering them than others,” said Boggs. “I would’ve hit more but I only had a few hours to fish. All five of the bass I weighed in came from my second pocket, along a 75-yard stretch.”

The Tennessee angler said he ended up boating six keepers in a 45-minute flurry.

“I was just grateful to be fishing after the morning I had,” said Boggs. “It was humbling to overcome that adversity and still go out there and catch nearly 22 pounds for the win.”

‘The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

SUMMERTON, S.C. (April 18, 2016) – Ronnie McCoy of Lamar, South Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 25 pounds, 5 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) South Carolina Division tournament on Santee Cooper presented by Navionics. For his win, McCoy took home $5,756.

McCoy said he spent his day in the Wyboo area of Potato Creek fishing various clumps of cypress trees.

“We had a cold front blow through Friday night so the morning bite was slow, especially near trees where there wasn’t any wind,” said McCoy, who earned the second win of his career in FLW competition. “I decided to move to a group of trees that the wind was hitting on the Potato Creek side and caught three fish. The wind definitely affected how the bass were setting up in the water.”

McCoy said he threw a Buckeye Lures Su-Spin Blade spinnerbait with a white Zoom Split Tail Trailer to catch his initial keepers.

“At 1:30 p.m. I went into a smaller creek off Potato looking for spawning fish,” said McCoy. “Within 30 minutes I caught three 6-pounders off of three different beds using a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Roadkill Craw. That was the deal-maker. The craw, with its unique shape, is great for sight-fishing.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Ronnie McCoy, Lamar, S.C., five bass, 25-5, $3,756 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Bradford Beavers, Ridgeville, S.C., five bass, 24-8, $1,878

3rd:          Ken Ellis, Bowman, S.C., five bass, 23-10, $1,253

4th:          Mark Hutson, Moncks Corner, S.C., five bass, 23-4, $1,366

5th:          Greg Rikard, Leesville, S.C., five bass, 23-3, $751

6th:          Jason Morse, Sumter, S.C., five bass, 22-1, $689

7th:          Chris Gramling, Gilbert, S.C., five bass, 21-9, $626

8th:          Marty Quesada Jr., Appling, Ga., five bass, 21-7, $863

9th:          Dustin Henson, Landrum, S.C., five bass, 20-13, $501

CANTERBURY WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY JACK LINK’S

CANTERBURY WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY JACK LINK’S

Alabama Pro Catches 17-pound Final Day Limit, Wins $125,000

[print_link]

ROGERS, Ark. (April 17, 2016) – In one of the most dramatic finishes in FLW history, Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury of Springville, Alabama, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 17 pounds even to win the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Jack Link’s Sunday and the top prize of $125,000.

Canterbury’s four-day total of 62 pounds, 7 ounces narrowly edged out day two leader Darrel Robertson (61-4) who finished second and Keystone Light pro Jeff Sprague (60-13) in third place.

“Beaver Lake has been pretty special this week,” said Canterbury, who earned the first FLW Tour win of his career and surpassed $1 million dollars in career earnings with FLW. “This lake is fishing so good right now, and the best anglers in the world were right behind me. I knew that I was going to have to catch 15 pounds today to even have a shot, and to go out and catch 17 – I have truly been blessed.”

Canterbury won the tournament by covering new water each day in pockets and coves up the White River.

“Every tournament here for the past three months has been won on the lower end of the lake, in the dirtiest water,” Canterbury said. “I fished down there a bit on the first day, but I’m more comfortable with where I’ve fished the last eight times that I have been here and that is up the river.

“I went up there after lunch on day one and caught a couple of decent fish, so I decided to put all of my eggs in that basket,” Canterbury continued. “There wasn’t as much pressure there, and the key to Beaver Lake is being able to run new water each day.”

Canterbury said that 19 of the 20 fish that he weighed in came via flipping and pitching a Dirty Jigs Tackle Scott Canterbury Flippin’ Jig with a NetBait Paca Chunk and a Dirty Jigs Tackle Luke Clausen Compact Pitchin’ Jig with a NetBait Paca Slim. He boated one keeper off of a bed with a Texas-rigged NetBait Paca Craw.

“I started this season with one of the worst tournaments of my career at Lake Okeechobee, and my goal here was to battle back and earn some solid points towards qualifying for the Forrest Wood Cup in my home state,” Canterbury went on to say. “To finally win one of these is unreal.”

The top 10 pros finished the tournament:

1st:          Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury, Springville, Ala., 20 bass, 62-7, $125,000

2nd:         Darrel Robertson, Jay, Okla., 20 bass, 61-4, $30,500

3rd:          Keystone Light pro Jeff Sprague, Point, Texas, 20 bass, 60-13, $25,000

4th:          Scott Martin, Clewiston, Fla., 20 bass, 59-8, $20,000

5th:          J.T. Kenney, Palm Bay, Fla., 20 bass, 57-15, $19,500

6th:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 20 bass, 57-12, $18,000

7th:          Quaker State pro Matt Arey, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 55-1, $17,000

8th:          Chris Whitson, Louisville, Tennessee, 20 bass, 53-4, $16,000

9th:          Livingston Lures pro Stetson Blaylock, Benton, Ark., 20 bass, 51-4, $15,000

10th:        Andrew Upshaw, Sapulpa, Okla., 20 bass, 51-1, $14,000

Joey Cifuentes of Clinton, Arkansas, won the co-angler division and $25,000 Friday with a two-day total of nine bass weighing 25 pounds, 12 ounces, followed by Mike Devere of Berea, Kentucky, who finished in second place with 10 bass weighing 23 pounds, 6 ounces worth $7,500.

In addition to casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division, anglers are also competing for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2016 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Huntsville, Alabama, Aug. 4-7 on Wheeler Lake.

Coverage of the Beaver Lake tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) September 14 from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. EST. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

The Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Jack Link’s was hosted by Visit Rogers. The next event for FLW Tour anglers will be the Walmart FLW Tour at Pickwick Lake presented by Quaker State.

A bow pierces the morning fog. Ribbons of water stream from either side, cutting a trail through the south Georgia swamp. They glide silently through pad fields, under canopies of Spanish moss, and then… an explosion.

But this is no Rambo movie. The explosion is a bass—the victim, a buzz bait. And rather than a tank, the battle buggy calling the shots is the Old Town Predator XL Minn Kota. From atop its perch, stealthy bass anglers wield the most bass-centric, ultra-portable fishing platform on the planet. They go places no other bass anglers can reach and deploy advanced technology to zero-in on their prey.

Griffin, Georgia’s Randy Vining is one of those anglers. During the week, Vining is an architect. On the weekend, he fishes and guides shoal bass expeditions on the Peach State’s Flint River near Atlanta. Now and then, he makes it down south into the swamps that harbor giant largemouth and a noticeable lack of big bass boats.

Clinton High School Wins at Lake Guntersville – BASS

Clinton High School Wins at Lake Guntersville

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala.— With 20 pounds of largemouth in the livewell by 9 a.m., the team members from Clinton High School didn’t believe their day on Lake Guntersville could get even better.

It did, but only after the weigh-in concluded at the Costa Bassmaster High School Southern Open.

Ryan Winchester and Jake Lee, seniors at the school in Clinton, Tenn., won the tournament with 24 pounds, 8 ounces after sitting in the hot seats for the three-hour weigh-in. That’s how long it took to weigh the catches of 322 high school bass club teams, a Bassmaster High School program record.

Sean Hall and Kyler McKie of North Augusta High School in South Carolina finished second with 23-12. Tyler Lubbat and Matt Runge of the Buffalo Grove Bass Fishing Club in Illinois took third with 22-2.

The last casts of the practice day sent good vibes to Lee and Winchester after they caught consecutive 2-pound largemouth from a long point on Lake Guntersville. They returned the next morning to find the shad in the process of spawning. The largemouth had plans too, and those involved feeding on the baitfish.

“Two-pounders turned into 4-pounders,” said Winchester, a senior who signed a bass fishing scholarship with Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. “We never left the spot after they started biting.”

And bite they did. Winchester and Lee caught a five-bass limit by 7:45 a.m., a little over an hour after fishing began. They sweated out the mandatory 15-minute halftime at 10 a.m., wondering how other contestants fared.

“What made the spot so good was the shad spawn,” added coach Scott Winchester. “I had to make them stop fishing after we found them in practice.”

The baitfish sweetened an already-prime spot for springtime largemouth on Lake Guntersville. The shoreline formed a long point sloping into 4 feet of water. Between the bank and river channel was a subtle, but key deep spot at 6 feet. Eelgrass grew over the top of the deeper water and the bass used the cover and depth to ambush the shad.

All it took to connect with the bass was casting into the deep hole with a spinnerbait, giving it a tug when encountering the grass, and hanging on for the strike.

“When the lure went through the grass all you needed to do was jerk it free,” said Lee, also a senior who signed a bass fishing scholarship at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn. “They hit it hard and tried to swallow the lure.”

Alternating between two lures caught all the fish. Those were 1/2-ounce shad color Terminator and white/chartreuse Showboats Custom Lures spinnerbaits.

Lee and Winchester said after catching the five-bass limit, they culled through at least 20 pounds of largemouth.

“They just kept hitting in that one spot and it was amazing,” said Lee, also from the 2015 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. “We never experienced anything like it and probably never will again.”

The anglers from Clinton High School advance to the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship. The date and location will be announced soon.

The big bass weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces got caught on a ChatterBait by Jake Mims of Alexander High School in Douglasville, Ga. The strike occurred as he retrieved the lure off a river ledge sloping from 8 into 19 feet of water. Mims won an Abu Garcia Revo SX reel for the catch.

Eight states were represented with 112 high school bass fishing clubs participating. The open tournament is one of three that advances teams to the championship event.

ALABAMA’S CANTERBURY TAKES LEAD ON DAY THREE AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY JACK LINK’S

ALABAMA’S CANTERBURY TAKES LEAD ON DAY THREE AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY JACK LINK’S

Tightly-Stacked Weights Set Stage for Dramatic Championship Sunday

[print_link]

ROGERS, Ark. (April 16, 2016) – The Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Jack Link’s is setting up for a dramatic final day on Sunday – all of the anglers that made the top-10 cut are in striking distance and have a legitimate shot to win the tournament, and the top prize of $125,000.

Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury of Springville, Alabama, who started the day in second place, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 6 ounces to take the lead with a three-day total of 45-7.

Day two leader Darrel Robertson of Jay, Oklahoma, (44-3) fell to second after bringing in a limit weighing 13-1. Keystone Light pro Jeff Sprague (44-0), Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan (43-15) and reigning FLW Angler of the Year Scott Martin (43-5) round out the top five.

With just 4-15 separating leader Canterbury from 10th place angler Andrew Upshaw (40-8) the tournament is still very much up for grabs.

“I’m excited, but I know that it’s not like I’ve got this tournament in the bag,” said Canterbury, who is seeking the first FLW Tour win of his career after six previous second- or third-place finishes. “I’ve got the best in the world right behind me – ‘Mr. Beaver Lake’ Matt Arey, the G.O.A.T. Andy Morgan right on my tail, and Jeff Sprague has caught them every day. I’m going to have to go out and catch five good ones tomorrow.

“I only caught 14 pounds today and if I do that tomorrow, I won’t win,” Canterbury continued. “I have to catch at least 15 pounds, otherwise I won’t have a shot at this. This lake is as healthy as it has ever been and is fishing really good.”

Canterbury said that he has caught all of his fish this week pitching a jig, and he is catching 8 or 9 keepers each day. He has been running mostly new water throughout the tournament, returning only to a few choice locations.

“I’ve been to this lake so many times that I just know little stretches that I like to fish. I’ve been fishing down almost to the dam and I’ve been up the White River and all over this place. Four of the five fish that I weighed in today came in places that I hadn’t fished before. I have caught a fish every day off of one rock, and I caught a 3-pounder there today, so I’m going back to it but other than that I’m not repeating a lot.

“I don’t know yet what I’m going to do tomorrow,” Canterbury went on to say. “At Beaver Lake, you have to fish the conditions each day. I’ve been in this spot before and I know how quickly this lake can change. I’m just going to go fishing and try to have some fun.”

A Reel That’s Nearly Impossible to Backlash Leads Daiwa’s New Bass Pack By Joe Sillis

Cody Meyer let the lure fly. He took his thumb off the spool and waited. Meyer, of course, is a fool. Every bass angler knows that a baitcaster without a thumb might as well be a rat’s nest of tangled line and frustration.Seconds later, his lure splashed down. But the backlash never followed.

Meyer was not a fool. The FLW veteran knows his reels, and at the 2016 Bassmaster Classic Expo in Tulsa, he showed up with one that’s nearly impossible to backlash. (Seriously…check the video at the bottom of this story.) It’s called the Zillion SV, and it’s the flagship of three new models of bass-oriented baitcasters from Daiwa for 2016.

“We wanted to introduce the bass reels to the right audience,” says Daiwa’s Curt Arakawa. “When we launch a new product at ICAST, the consumers might not be able to really use them until spring. That’s why we decided to launch these at the Classic. We wanted to put them in the hands of the dealers right there, so consumers at the show had a chance to see them and purchase these products right off the bat.”
