QUEEN WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION EVENT ON KERR LAKE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

Milligan wins co-angler title

HENDERSON, N.C. (April 11, 2016) – Jeff Queen of Catawba, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 9 ounces, Saturday to win the second FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division tournament of 2016 on Kerr Lake presented by Power-Pole. For his victory, Queen took home $4,507.

“On the morning of the event we had wind gusting up to 40 mph, so I had to change my game plan,” said Queen, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “With huge the swells on the main lake, I opted for running points in Nutbush Creek.”

Queen said he positioned his boat in 8 to 12 feet of water where larger females were active. He said that this tactic was crucial to his success.

“Everyone else was fishing up shallow on the banks with their boats over the top of the fish,” said Queen. “In those spots, there will never be a shortage of bass, but they will be smaller bucks. With the cold front that moved through, the scarce, heavier females were out deep. I only had about 8 bites, but they were the right ones.”

Queen said he dragged a green-pumpkin-colored TrueSouth Jig with a green-pumpkin Zoom Super Chunk trailer to hit nearly 30 wind-blown points.

“I felt good about the decisions I made,” said Queen. “I was able to produce a decent limit and get my first win.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jeff Queen, Catawba, N.C., five bass, 20-9, $4,507

Brandenburg wins co-angler title

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (April 11, 2016) – Mark Morgan of Somerset, Kentucky, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 21 pounds, 1 ounce, Saturday to win the second FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament of 2016 on Dale Hollow Lake. For his victory, Morgan took home $6,830.

Morgan said that he spent his day focusing on bass that were congregating in shallow water, near steep banks. He said he ran to multiple sections of the lake and rotated between seven points.

“My boat was in deep water, between 15 and 20 feet, but the bait was shallow,” said Morgan, who notched his third win in FLW competition. “A lot of bass were up very shallow and spawning, but mine were still staging and getting ready to spawn. I spent around 45 minutes in each section and after my first rotation I had my winning weight in the boat.”

Morgan said he used one bait to catch his limit – a green-pumpkin-colored Cumberland Pro Lures jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Tail Craw.

“The water was very clear so I didn’t want anything with flash,” said Morgan. “The small profile of the lure was crucial for my catch as well.”

Morgan finished by saying he was able to catch approximately 14 keepers throughout the event.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Mark Morgan, Somerset, Ky., five bass, 21-1, $4,830 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

WASHAM WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MISSISSIPPI DIVISION EVENT ON PICKWICK LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Best wins co-angler title

[print_link]

IUKA, Miss. (April 11, 2016) – Jimmy Washam of Covington, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 4 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mississippi Division tournament on Pickwick Lake presented by Navionics. For his victory, Washam took home $7,273.

“I was able to dial in on fish that were in very specific transition areas,” said Washam, who logged the first win of his FLW career. “Basically, they were in small stretches of bank or cuts half way back into major creeks, including Yellow Creek.”

Washam said he hit 12 different areas, methodically working 50- to 75-yard stretches of bank.

“I focused on small spots that boats in front of me weren’t making multiple casts to,” said Washam. “It could’ve been between two docks or a subtle transition in the bank. At my first two stretches, I caught two 5-pounders and I built the rest of my catch around them.”

Washam said his lure – a green-pumpkin-colored Buckeye Finesse Jig with a Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw – was crucial to his pattern.

“There was a lot of boat pressure in the creeks, but with the finesse jig, I was able to get behind people and still catch them,” said Washam. “Several of the fish I weighed in came from spots directly behind people. That was a huge advantage for me.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jimmy Washam, Covington, Tenn., five bass, 18-4, $5,273 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

ELBERTON, Ga. (April 11, 2016) – Kevin Chandler of New London, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 8 ounces, Saturday to win the third FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division tournament of 2016 on Lake Russell. For his victory, Chandler took home $5,466.

Chandler said he began his day targeting bass on the Savannah River. He split his efforts between a Hawg Caller spinnerbait and a chartreuse-colored Strike King spinnerbait.

“I slow rolled both along rocky points until about 10 a.m.,” said Chandler, who has three career wins in FLW competition. “I was able to bring in about 10 keepers before the bite slowed down. After that I decided to make a run for new cover and switch techniques.”

The North Carolina angler said he finished out his day flipping shallow brush in the backs of creeks using a green-pumpkin and brown-colored custom jig.

“I caught two of my heaviest fish on the jig – a 5½- and a 3½-pounder,” said Chandler. “I used a more subtle approach because the water was only about a foot deep. I ended up with five more keepers and figured I had enough to make a run for the win.”

HANDSOME AND DURABLE PLANO A-SERIES TACKLE BAG DELIVERS UNMATCHED ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITY IN AN ULTRA MANAGEABLE SIZE

HANDSOME AND DURABLE PLANO A-SERIES TACKLE BAG DELIVERS UNMATCHED ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITY IN AN ULTRA MANAGEABLE SIZE

[print_link]

Plano, IL (April 11, 2016) – The old saying warns that beauty can be skin deep. Sometimes, however, what’s inside can be just as glorious – or even more so – as the outside. Find this combination, and you’ve got yourself a keeper.

Such is the case with the new Plano A-Series Tackle Bag.

Its rugged good looks come courtesy of the same deep green, high-performance, proprietary polyester fabric, MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) tactical webbing and high-end componentry shared with other innovative bags in Plano’s premium new A-Series line. Beneath its attractive exterior, a parade of clever features combine for new levels of embodied utility, durability and performance that can only be credited to 63 years of tackle box and bag-building experience.

At 15” long by 10.25” wide by 9.25” tall, the new A-Series Tackle Bag has what Plano engineers call “a manageable footprint.” You’ll call it perfect… not too big and not too small…. Right-sized for carrying up to five fully loaded Plano 3600 Utility Boxes (four included) inside its padded main compartment.

The key to the high-end A-Series Tackle Bag’s durability is its camera bag-inspired design, which uses a pair of reinforced straps and new stronger buckles in lieu of a zipper to close the main compartment lid.

“When some tackle bags are zippered shut, the zipper can become the weak point and eventually fail because it bears the entire weight of the bag when carried by the handle on top,” says Plano Brand Manager, Ryan Olander. “For the premium A-Series Tackle Bag, we eliminated that risk by creating a bag without a zipper… using improved buckles, instead, that allow the bag’s main compartment to be opened faster and more easily… even with cold or slime-covered hands.”

Plano innovation and capability resonate throughout the rest of the A-Series Tackle Bag, which offers anglers an interior lid storage system consisting of a large, zippered pocket and four smaller slip pockets in addition to an astonishing 12 exterior pockets to store, secure and access every angling essential.

Two generously sized zippered pockets on each end of the bag are capped off with open slip pockets. Three additional zippered pockets gild the bag’s front—one slip pocket at the top near the opening to the inner compartment and two zippered face pockets finished with hardworking MOLLE webbing for securing additional small items to the bag’s exterior. The back of the bag has a large, mesh slip pocket that closes with a Velcro tab at the top.

Plano Model No. 413800 A-Series Tackle Bag

  • Holds five 3600 size StowAway Utility Boxes (Four are included)
  • Zipper-free main compartment for fast access and durability
  • Maximize storage efficiency with compact footprint and 12 exterior pockets
  • Durable proprietary polyester fabric in attractive, deep green with water-resistant lining

A is for access. Four Ounces Lock In Victory For South Carolina’s Britt Myers

Four Ounces Lock In Victory For South Carolina’s Britt Myers

[print_link]

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — For the fourth day in a row, Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., made a long run to the Cooper River near Charleston, S.C., knowing that he needed to make all the right moves to claim the championship title.

Due to a strong cold front that shut the fishing down, Myers was forced to scrap his original game plan and try something new. The adjustment proved to be the right decision, which produced 9 pounds, 5 ounces of bass, and a four-day total of 56-3 during Championship Sunday at the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay presented by GoRVing.

Myers had only three fish by late Sunday morning, and he knew a change in presentation was necessary if he were to remain in contention for the title.

“I thought that I had blown it,” Myers said. “The water got slick and the fishing slowed to a grinding halt, making me wonder what it was going to take to find two more fish. In my mind, I was scrambling to salvage fifth place, and that’s a tough position to be in.”

Near the end of his day, Myers had a bass try to eat a Chatterbait, but he wasn’t able to set the hook in time. He switched to a Zoom Super Fluke in a pearl pattern; a decision he made the evening before in case the Chatterbait pattern dried up.

“After switching to the Super Fluke, I caught a 10- to 11-incher almost immediately,” Myers said. “I felt that was a sign, so I stuck with it and caught several other small fish during the last hour, but I was able to fill out my limit and cull up one time before heading in.”

Myers knew that most of the anglers would fish conservatively and avoid the long boat rides to the Santee and Cooper rivers, which is where the biggest limits of bass were produced during all four days.

“I went all in on this tournament,” he said. “I knew before I ever got here that I would be making a near two-hour run to access the Cooper River. I felt that after the recent historical floods on the Santee River, the fishing would be difficult there. Honestly, I was pretty surprised at how well Kelly Jordon did on the Santee.”

Myers was fishing an abandoned rice field with irrigation drains that were filled with hydrilla and stumps creating an ideal situation to catch bass during all phases of the spawn.

“When the tide wasn’t perfect, I fished stumps looking for spawning bass,” he explained. “When the tide picked up, I fished the current breaks near the hydrilla points and near logs and laydowns. There were times when I could almost call my shot.”

Myers got his start fishing with South Carolina bass clubs, and B.A.S.S. Nation tournaments, and anglers from those same clubs helped him become more familiar with the Winyah Bay fishery.

“To me, that’s a fine representation of South Carolina bass fishermen,” Myers said. “I’m beyond proud to win this event in my home state, it’s just hard to accurately describe what I’m feeling right now.”

Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., caught only two fish on Sunday that weighed 5-13. His four-day total was 55-15, which was good enough for a second-place finish just a mere 4 ounces behind Britt Myers.

“The bite was tough today, and looking back there were definitely a few things I could have done differently,” Hite said. “But, I didn’t loose any fish. I fished a good, clean tournament; I just didn’t get enough bites today.”

Hite was sure to point out that the Georgetown hospitality was fantastic, and the fans made the event very enjoyable.

The remainder of the Top 12 was as follows: Kelly Jordon, 55-3; Brent Chapman, 47-11; Randy Howell, 47-11; Keith Combs, 46-13; Gerald Swindle, 46-7; Jacob Powroznik, 46-2; Boyd Duckett, 45-5; Chris Zaldain, 43-9; John Hunter Jr., 40-14; and Mark Menendez, 39-2.

Chapman was awarded $1,000 for the leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race at the end of the event.

Myers earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $1,000 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

He also earned the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500 for leading on the second day.

Myers won the Toyota Bonus Bucks of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program. The second-highest-placing eligible entrant, Chapman, received $2,000.

The Big Bass Award of $1,500 was presented to John Murray for weighing in the overall biggest bass of the event — a 8-9 bass.

WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE OPENER ON TABLE ROCK LAKE

WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE OPENER ON TABLE ROCK LAKE

[print_link]

KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. (April 9, 2016) – The Western Illinois University team of Alexander Bouldin of Girard, Illinois, and Matt Wolz of Joliet, Illinois, won the FLW College Fishing Central Conference opener on Table Rock Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 14 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“Our goal was to come into this event and make the top-10 cut,” said Wolz, a junior majoring in fire science. “The entire tournament was a great experience. We couldn’t be more excited about making a run for the national title.”

The duo said they built their winning limit running the backs of isolated pockets on the James River, just south of Piney Creek.

“We focused on transition areas where bass were schooling around edges of small chunk rock and pea gravel,” said Bouldin, a senior majoring in law enforcement and justice administration. “We just kept trying to key in on the finer rock by cranking a jig in there and ended up catching some nice smallmouth early.”

“I think we hit eight or nine different pockets and fished slower through the areas that produced during practice,” said Wolz. “We wanted to keep dragging on those rocks in spots that fit our schooling pattern. It was nice to really slow down and see what the lake could produce.”

The duo said they primarily used a green-pumpkin-colored Gene Larew Biffle Bug rigged on a Biffle HardHead Jig, as well as a green Storm Wiggle Wort. The team’s stringer consisted of two smallmouth and three largemouth bass.

“We only had eight or nine bites all day, luckily five of them were the right kind,” said Bouldin.

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2017 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:          Western Illinois University – Alexander Bouldin, Girard, Ill., and Matt Wolz, Joliet, Ill., five bass, 16-14, $2,000

OKLAHOMA’S BIRGE WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION EVENT ON GRAND LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

OKLAHOMA’S BIRGE WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION EVENT ON GRAND LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

[print_link]

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (April 9, 2016) – Pro Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event on Grand Lake presented by Evinrude with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 51 pounds, 13 ounces. For his win, Birge took home $40,000.

Birge, who started the day in eighth place, said he spent the majority of his tournament targeting prespawn bass in three mid-lake areas that were littered with small chunk rock.

“I’d fish a 300-yard staging area in Wolf Creek, and then leave it alone to replenish,” said Birge, who earned his third career victory in FLW competition. “I’d make my way down to the mouth of the creek and fish another 200-yard stretch, and then make my way back up. There were fish moving up shallow throughout the day, so I just kept bouncing around and junkfishing.”

Birge said he rotated through his three areas for the duration of the three-day event, and that his bites gradually got heavier.

“I know the fish in this lake and their quality,” said Birge. “I knew the numbers were here if I stuck with it until they started to bite. I probably casted my lure a thousand times each day. I just kept chunking and plowing the bottom with it. I just about wore the paint and bill off of it.”

The Oklahoma pro said he used one lure and rod to catch his bass over the course of the tournament – a Live Baby Bluegill-colored 6th Sense Crush Mini 25X Crankbait on a 7-foot, medium-action Falcon Cara T7 casting rod.

“I found that the bigger bass didn’t like bluegill and were biting at them,” Birge said. “One of my keepers spit up a bluegill in my livewell yesterday, and it reassured me that what I was doing was right.”

The top 10 pros on Grand Lake were:

1st:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 15 bass, 51-13, $40,000

2nd:         Toby Hartsell, Afton, Okla., 14 bass, 50-5, $15,500

3rd:          Sammy Burks, Joplin, Mo., 15 bass, 48-7, $12,000

4th:          Quaker State pro Matt Arey, Shelby, N.C., 15 bass, 48-3, $10,000

5th:          Chad Warren, Sand Springs, Okla., 14 bass,   47-1, $9,300

6th:          Jesse Wolfe, Nelson, Wis., 13 bass,  47-0, $8,000

7th:          Bill Tervin, Pocola, Okla., 12 bass, 44-11, $7,000

8th:          Matt Cooper, Smithville, Texas, 12 bass, 39-7, $6,000

9th:          Russell Cecil, Willis, Texas, 10 bass, 37-0, $5,000

10th:        Earl Hoskins, Burns Flat, Okla., 10 bass, 33-2, $4,000

Brett Hite Schools Top 51, Takes Lead On Day 3

Brett Hite Schools Top 51, Takes Lead On Day 3

[print_link]

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Despite a powerful cold front accompanied by strong northerly winds, many of the Top 51 anglers still made the long grueling run to the Cooper River near Charleston, S.C., to catch their fish.

Saturday was a shootout between the Top 3 anglers, which ended with the third lead change in as many days.

Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., successfully plucked 18 pounds of largemouth bass from the same area he has been fishing the past two days. Hite will leave the docks on Championship Sunday with a three-day weight of 50-2, looking for the second victory of his career at the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay presented by GoRVing.

So far, the biggest concern has been the long boat rides to access the bass-rich waters of the Cooper River. However, the attention has now shifted to rapidly dropping tides and a large cold front that will likely impact Sunday’s fishing.

“I’ve been focusing my efforts on the same school of bass for the past three days, and I expect the fishing to be just as good for one more day,” Hite said. “But, I’ll have to adapt tomorrow after this front pushes through. I’ve been catching good numbers of fish each day, but with the dropping tide, I had shallower water to deal with, which positioned the schools of bass near certain pieces of structure.”

Hite, who holds a slim lead over Texas angler Kelly Jordon (49-0), has been catching his limit of bass early enough during the day to head back to the launch ahead of time.

“The long boat rides have been going smoothly, but when you’re in contention to win a tournament like this, it’s smart to play it safe whenever you can,” he said. “It’s going to be much colder in the morning, but typically, tidal-river bass aren’t as affected by weather conditions — I hope that holds true. I will likely have to make some adjustments tomorrow, but I’m confident I’ll be able to stay on the school.”

Hite’s weights have been going up each day, but yesterday Jordon swung for the fences and weighed the heaviest five-bass limit of the tournament with 24-7. Jordon’s Friday limit, plus today’s 16-4, has put him in position to win on Sunday.

“I gambled yesterday, and it paid off,” Jordon said. “I slept great last night, and I’m going to sleep well again tonight. It helps to know exactly where I’m going tomorrow, and how I will be fishing. It’s just going to depend on whether or not the right bass eat or not.”

Jordon said the bite was different today. He caught a couple solid fish, but lost several others that would have helped his total Saturday.

“The fish were short striking my lures, which made it difficult to get a solid hook set and keep the bass on the line,” he said. “I blame the cold front for that, and I’ll adjust accordingly tomorrow.”

After leading on Friday, Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., slipped into third place today with 8-15, pushing his three-day total to 46-14. Myers explained that while he didn’t do as well as he had hoped, he’s still in contention for the title.

“To be honest, today’s small limit of bass might be the best 8 pounds, 15 ounces I’ve ever weighed. Especially if it turns into a victory tomorrow,” Myers said. “The fish I’ve been catching are still in the same basic location, but they’ve relocated to accommodate the shrinking tide, and I think I figured out where at the end of the day.”

Sunday’s field will be cut to the Top 12 anglers who will compete for top honors and the $100,000 payday. Behind Hite, Jordon and Myers, the remainder of the field will be as follows: John Hunter Jr., 40-14; Brent Chapman, 38-7; Jacob Powroznik, 37-9; Keith Combs, 36-6; Randy Howell, 36-1; Mark Menendez, 35-12; Boyd Duckett, 35-5; Chris Zaldain, 35-0; and Gerald Swindle, 34-13.

Take-off on Championship Sunday will be held at 7a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex with the final weigh-in scheduled at the same location at 3:30 p.m.
