WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE OPENER ON TABLE ROCK LAKE

WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE OPENER ON TABLE ROCK LAKE

KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. (April 9, 2016) – The Western Illinois University team of Alexander Bouldin of Girard, Illinois, and Matt Wolz of Joliet, Illinois, won the FLW College Fishing Central Conference opener on Table Rock Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 14 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“Our goal was to come into this event and make the top-10 cut,” said Wolz, a junior majoring in fire science. “The entire tournament was a great experience. We couldn’t be more excited about making a run for the national title.”

The duo said they built their winning limit running the backs of isolated pockets on the James River, just south of Piney Creek.

“We focused on transition areas where bass were schooling around edges of small chunk rock and pea gravel,” said Bouldin, a senior majoring in law enforcement and justice administration. “We just kept trying to key in on the finer rock by cranking a jig in there and ended up catching some nice smallmouth early.”

“I think we hit eight or nine different pockets and fished slower through the areas that produced during practice,” said Wolz. “We wanted to keep dragging on those rocks in spots that fit our schooling pattern. It was nice to really slow down and see what the lake could produce.”

The duo said they primarily used a green-pumpkin-colored Gene Larew Biffle Bug rigged on a Biffle HardHead Jig, as well as a green Storm Wiggle Wort. The team’s stringer consisted of two smallmouth and three largemouth bass.

“We only had eight or nine bites all day, luckily five of them were the right kind,” said Bouldin.

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2017 College Fishing National Championship are:

OKLAHOMA’S BIRGE WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION EVENT ON GRAND LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

OKLAHOMA’S BIRGE WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION EVENT ON GRAND LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (April 9, 2016) – Pro Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event on Grand Lake presented by Evinrude with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 51 pounds, 13 ounces. For his win, Birge took home $40,000.

Birge, who started the day in eighth place, said he spent the majority of his tournament targeting prespawn bass in three mid-lake areas that were littered with small chunk rock.

“I’d fish a 300-yard staging area in Wolf Creek, and then leave it alone to replenish,” said Birge, who earned his third career victory in FLW competition. “I’d make my way down to the mouth of the creek and fish another 200-yard stretch, and then make my way back up. There were fish moving up shallow throughout the day, so I just kept bouncing around and junkfishing.”

Birge said he rotated through his three areas for the duration of the three-day event, and that his bites gradually got heavier.

“I know the fish in this lake and their quality,” said Birge. “I knew the numbers were here if I stuck with it until they started to bite. I probably casted my lure a thousand times each day. I just kept chunking and plowing the bottom with it. I just about wore the paint and bill off of it.”

The Oklahoma pro said he used one lure and rod to catch his bass over the course of the tournament – a Live Baby Bluegill-colored 6th Sense Crush Mini 25X Crankbait on a 7-foot, medium-action Falcon Cara T7 casting rod.

“I found that the bigger bass didn’t like bluegill and were biting at them,” Birge said. “One of my keepers spit up a bluegill in my livewell yesterday, and it reassured me that what I was doing was right.”

The top 10 pros on Grand Lake were:

1st:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 15 bass, 51-13, $40,000

2nd:         Toby Hartsell, Afton, Okla., 14 bass, 50-5, $15,500

3rd:          Sammy Burks, Joplin, Mo., 15 bass, 48-7, $12,000

4th:          Quaker State pro Matt Arey, Shelby, N.C., 15 bass, 48-3, $10,000

5th:          Chad Warren, Sand Springs, Okla., 14 bass,   47-1, $9,300

6th:          Jesse Wolfe, Nelson, Wis., 13 bass,  47-0, $8,000

7th:          Bill Tervin, Pocola, Okla., 12 bass, 44-11, $7,000

8th:          Matt Cooper, Smithville, Texas, 12 bass, 39-7, $6,000

9th:          Russell Cecil, Willis, Texas, 10 bass, 37-0, $5,000

Brett Hite Schools Top 51, Takes Lead On Day 3

Brett Hite Schools Top 51, Takes Lead On Day 3

[print_link]

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Despite a powerful cold front accompanied by strong northerly winds, many of the Top 51 anglers still made the long grueling run to the Cooper River near Charleston, S.C., to catch their fish.

Saturday was a shootout between the Top 3 anglers, which ended with the third lead change in as many days.

Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., successfully plucked 18 pounds of largemouth bass from the same area he has been fishing the past two days. Hite will leave the docks on Championship Sunday with a three-day weight of 50-2, looking for the second victory of his career at the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay presented by GoRVing.

So far, the biggest concern has been the long boat rides to access the bass-rich waters of the Cooper River. However, the attention has now shifted to rapidly dropping tides and a large cold front that will likely impact Sunday’s fishing.

“I’ve been focusing my efforts on the same school of bass for the past three days, and I expect the fishing to be just as good for one more day,” Hite said. “But, I’ll have to adapt tomorrow after this front pushes through. I’ve been catching good numbers of fish each day, but with the dropping tide, I had shallower water to deal with, which positioned the schools of bass near certain pieces of structure.”

Hite, who holds a slim lead over Texas angler Kelly Jordon (49-0), has been catching his limit of bass early enough during the day to head back to the launch ahead of time.

“The long boat rides have been going smoothly, but when you’re in contention to win a tournament like this, it’s smart to play it safe whenever you can,” he said. “It’s going to be much colder in the morning, but typically, tidal-river bass aren’t as affected by weather conditions — I hope that holds true. I will likely have to make some adjustments tomorrow, but I’m confident I’ll be able to stay on the school.”

Hite’s weights have been going up each day, but yesterday Jordon swung for the fences and weighed the heaviest five-bass limit of the tournament with 24-7. Jordon’s Friday limit, plus today’s 16-4, has put him in position to win on Sunday.

“I gambled yesterday, and it paid off,” Jordon said. “I slept great last night, and I’m going to sleep well again tonight. It helps to know exactly where I’m going tomorrow, and how I will be fishing. It’s just going to depend on whether or not the right bass eat or not.”

Jordon said the bite was different today. He caught a couple solid fish, but lost several others that would have helped his total Saturday.

“The fish were short striking my lures, which made it difficult to get a solid hook set and keep the bass on the line,” he said. “I blame the cold front for that, and I’ll adjust accordingly tomorrow.”

After leading on Friday, Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., slipped into third place today with 8-15, pushing his three-day total to 46-14. Myers explained that while he didn’t do as well as he had hoped, he’s still in contention for the title.

“To be honest, today’s small limit of bass might be the best 8 pounds, 15 ounces I’ve ever weighed. Especially if it turns into a victory tomorrow,” Myers said. “The fish I’ve been catching are still in the same basic location, but they’ve relocated to accommodate the shrinking tide, and I think I figured out where at the end of the day.”

Sunday’s field will be cut to the Top 12 anglers who will compete for top honors and the $100,000 payday. Behind Hite, Jordon and Myers, the remainder of the field will be as follows: John Hunter Jr., 40-14; Brent Chapman, 38-7; Jacob Powroznik, 37-9; Keith Combs, 36-6; Randy Howell, 36-1; Mark Menendez, 35-12; Boyd Duckett, 35-5; Chris Zaldain, 35-0; and Gerald Swindle, 34-13.

Take-off on Championship Sunday will be held at 7a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex with the final weigh-in scheduled at the same location at 3:30 p.m.

Utah’s Brown Wins B.A.S.S. Western Regional On Lake Mead

[print_link]

HENDERSON, Nev. — Bill Brown of Grand Junction, Colo., representing the Utah B.A.S.S. Nation remained atop the leaderboard for three days to win the boater division of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

On Friday, Brown’s winning weight of 15 pounds brought his overall total to 49 pounds, 1 ounce.

Scott Hausman, of Las Vegas, Nev., won the non-boater division with a three-day weight of 22 pounds, 2 ounces. Hausman fished for the Nevada team.

Brown and Hausman are among 22 anglers from 11 states with the heaviest cumulative weights for their states. Each top placing boater and non-boater advances to the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. Date and location of the championship will be announced soon.

Brown made a final day gamble that proved a winning move. At 1 p.m. and without a bass in the boat, he ditched his fishing strategy that worked on Wednesday and Thursday.

His first strategy was fishing a topwater buzzbait along the shoreline of shallow coves near the main lake. To save the win, Brown moved to deeper water and caught the winning weight within an hour of his weigh-in time.

“All of my bass had already spawned and were feeding on baitfish,” he said. “The shallow fish moved to deeper water, and I found them.”

Gusty winds pushed the baitfish into a cove and the bass followed. Brown caught the bass by casting a heavyweight jig into boulders where the bass ambushed the bait.

The lure choice was a 3/4-ounce Pepper Custom Baits jig with a 3.75-inch Gary Yamamoto Custom Lures Flappin’ Hog. The jig was camo and green with a 301 color choice for the trailer.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Brown found postspawn bass in the opposite direction. He targeted bass in the far reaches of basins in the middle lake. The bass were shallow, about 2 feet or less.

The bait of choice was a Pepper Custom Baits Commando Series Buzz Bait. The lure featured a gold blade with a white/chartreuse skirt. And, Brown said his lure presentation was key.

“I had to cast it onto the shoreline, gently drag it into the water and retrieve just fast enough to turn the blades,” said Brown, a member of the Top of Utah Bass Anglers.

Strikes occurred as the lure passed through tumbleweeds and brushpiles near the shoreline. Brown reasoned the bass were ambushing baitfish from the cover.

Hausman is a recent Nevada transplant from Utah. He’s a former member of that state’s team and was welcomed to his new home with sound advice from teammates.

“A lot of anglers cast the lure directly into the spawning bass,” he said. “What the Nevada guys taught me is the bass stay off the beds and guard the nests.

“I focused on finding the little spots my partners missed or avoided,” continued Hausman, now a member of the Nevada Bass Anglers.

Brown earned the Livingston Lures Leader award of $250 by leading the tournament on Day 2.

He also earned the Big Bass award of  $250 for catching the biggest bass of the tournament. Brown caught a largemouth weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces on Wednesday.

Mark Lassagne of California earned the A.R.E. Top Angler award of $250 award as the top-finishing angler using the brand’s truck caps.

South Carolina’s Myers Takes Command At Winyah Bay

South Carolina’s Myers Takes Command At Winyah Bay

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Britt Myers fully understands the amount of risk that comes with making a near two-hour boat run to access his fishing spots, but today it paid off in a big way.

Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., brought in a heavy five-bass limit that weighed 21 pounds, 7 ounces, which catapulted him into the lead with a two-day total of 37-15 during the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay presented by GoRVing.

After a weather delay on Thursday, Friday’s take-off was on time and preceded a beautiful spring day that produced some impressive bass.

Kelly Jordon of Flint, Texas, weighed the heaviest limit of the tournament so far with 24-7 pushing his two-day total to 32-12. Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., is in third with 32-2, while Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas, is holding down fourth place with 26-1. Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., round out the Top 5 with 25-8.

With two days remaining, Myers won’t divulge specific details yet, but he is confident that the right bass will still be where he’s fishing for at least one more day.

“After a good day on Thursday, I really zeroed in on a specific area that was holding a lot of big bass,” Myers said. “I found this spot during practice, but I wasn’t really sure of the fish quality because I avoided setting the hook hoping the same fish would bite again once the tournament began.”

Myers was targeting bass in deep and shallow water, bass that were spawning and bass that were just roaming. But the tide impacted which particular group of fish he focused on, and when he targeted them.

“Today it was all about the timing,” he said. “When the tide was perfect, the biggest fish would eat, which I figured out on Thursday. I capitalized on what I learned today, and I really think I can put myself into position to do it again tomorrow — and hopefully on Sunday for the win.”

Myers believes that if he can catch 13 to 14 pounds each of the final two days, he should be able to claim the championship. However, after Jordon brought in 24-7 during Friday’s weigh-in, it’s hard to predict what might happen.

Jordon had the kind of day that a tournament bass fisherman dreams about.

“I’m the type of angler who swings for the fence at every event,” Jordon said. “It’s cost me big time in the past, but today it definitely paid off. So much of the success in this sport hinges on simple decisions, and I learned something valuable yesterday that made me think I could replicate it again today.”

On Thursday, Jordan weighed only one big bass for 8-5, which revealed what he thought might be a workable pattern. That gut feeling helped put the Texas angler in second place leading into Saturday’s semi-final round.

“I am going to fish the same pattern again tomorrow,” he said. “But, it’s hard to say whether the same caliber fish will bite or not. Because this fishery is so expansive, once you decide where you’re going to fish, you’re pretty much committed. I’m going to gamble and see if I can do it again.”

Hite said that the Winyah Bay area reminded him of the California Delta, which is one of his favorite fisheries.

“I was confident that this event would play out much like a tournament on the California Delta, but you really can’t be sure until you catch some fish,” Hite said. “I found an area that had very similar characteristics to what I’d look for out West, and it’s holding a big school of nice fish.”

Hite is confident that his pattern will hold up for a couple more days. He is one of the many anglers who are making a long run to access prime waters, which naturally comes with risk of travel delays.

“So far the traveling aspect of this tournament has been a breeze, which really keeps me confident in making good decisions and staying on the right fish,” he said. “That kind of confidence doesn’t come easy, but it helps tremendously. I’m excited to see how Saturday shapes up.”

After Saturday’s semi-final round, the Top 12 anglers will advance to Championship Sunday for a shot at the $100,000 prize.

Myers also earned the Livingston Lures Leader award of $500 for leading the second day of the event.

Daily take-offs are scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, with weigh-ins scheduled at the same location at 3:30 p.m.

Utah Wins State Title At B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional

Bill Brown of Grand Junction, Colo., maintains the lead on Day 2 of the the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Western Divisional presented by Magellan Outdoors on Lake Mead held out of Henderson, Nev., after bringing in 13 pounds, 6 ounces for a two-day total weight of 34-1.

Utah Wins State Title At B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional

HENDERSON, Nev. — Utah won the competition between 11 western states Thursday, claiming the state title at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Utah’s winning effort got a boost from Bill Brown, who maintained his individual lead in the tournament that concludes Friday.

Utah won the state title by virtue of a tie-breaking rule. The teams from Utah and Nevada both caught 335 pounds, 15 ounces after two days of competition. In the event of a tie, the angler with the heaviest single-day catch earns his state the title. That Utah angler was Brown, who caught 20-0 on Day 1.

Utah won a Triton 189 TrX with a trailer, accessories and a Mercury 150 Pro XS. The total package value is $33,340.

Idaho claimed third place with 326-4, while Washington took fourth with 277-12 and Colorado placed fifth with 271-8.

Utah anglers hold down the top four spots on the individual leader board. Brown holds a narrow lead, with Travis Graham in second with 31-5, Mike Lavallee in third with 30-4 and Ben Byrd in fourth with 29-5.

“Most of these guys (from Utah) fish clear water and are very skilled on this type of water,” said Rick Culver, president of the Utah B.A.S.S. Nation.

That’s an understatement, actually. Lake Mead is downstream on the Colorado River from Lake Powell, the home lake for Utah.

“We have a lot of tournaments on Powell and it fishes the same way,” continued Culver. “So things just naturally fell into place for us.”

Brown caught a limit weighing 13-6 on Day 2 by using the same strategy as Day 1. He is fishing the middle portion of the lake where bass are just beginning to spawn.

“I went back to the same area thinking I could catch the bass I lost there yesterday,” said Brown, a member of the Top of Utah Bass Anglers.

On Day 1, Brown lost enough bass in the 4-pound range to draw him back. His choice of lures is the reason why.

“I’m fishing a topwater lure and you get your fair share of missed strikes,” he said. “The bass are hitting short, and I am having to try and catch them twice.”

The slaphappy bass are getting a second cast from a leadhead jig. He is flipping the lure along shoreline tules when not using it behind the topwater. On the upside the lure imitates baitfish, and spawning bass usually strike aggressively to defend their beds.

“It’s a very niche bite, and I realize there are risks,” he continued. “But for me a topwater is a confidence bait that I feel very comfortable using for spawning bass.”

The tournament began Wednesday with a full field of 212 anglers representing B.A.S.S. clubs from 11 states. After two days, the field has been trimmed to the Top 21 anglers and the three highest-ranking boaters and non-boaters from each state.

Friday’s round will determine the overall winner and the qualifiers for the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. The top angler from each state advances to the championship.

The Livingston Lures Leader Award was presented to Brown. He earned the $250 bonus by leading the tournament on Day 2.

Callville Bay Resort and Marina is tournament headquarters. Anglers depart at 6:15 a.m. PT and return for the weigh-in beginning at 2:30 p.m.

April Kerr Lake Report by Jason Houchins

April Kerr Lake Report

By Jason Houchins

With water levels more stable and conditions clearing throughout the Lake, the spawn is close. Some are spawning, a few have spawned, but most are in a holding pattern. With front after front, constant wind, and water temperatures hovering in the upper 50s, the bass have been hesitant to commit. But eventually they all will commit and I’m guessing the first full moon of April that things will be pretty interesting. But, as long as we have nights in the 30s, it could keep them at bay and us confused. Once we can get consistent water temperatures above 60 start looking. It will not be long.
April is a great month to fish here and this April will be no different. All phases of the spawn will be happening throughout the lake and you can catch them however you feel comfortable. One bait that will always be on my deck is a spinnerbait, and if the wind blows I will have two on the deck. A jig or something to flip or pitch will also always be there as well. This year the water is pretty low, leaving fewer pieces of cover to spawn on. Look for fish to spawn on stumps, wood, or rock, or really anything available. As the month continues the shallows will have fish spawning and guarding fry in and around pockets on the main lake and in creeks. A buzzbait is a great tool to cover water fast and locate spawners that are hard to see. Follow that up with a wacky rig worm of some kind and you can really catch some fish. Just remember all pockets are not the same and you may have to fish a few before you locate one that has several fish. This is where history can help you, fish always seem to use the same areas to spawn year after year. If you have an area where you’ve caught them in the past, chances are they are there.
With the number of large five fish limits I’ve seen this year, I’m really excited for the future. There have been several bags over 20 lbs. caught this past month and at least two over 24 lbs. This lake is really on the rebound and with the lower water, I think you could see a fish in the 9lb-10lb range caught this April. I could be wrong but the amount of fish being caught in the 4 lb. range is awesome. So either way you should have an excellent opportunity at a great bag of fish. Come out and enjoy the outdoors at Virginia’s largest lake this April, who knows you may get the big one.

Australian Angler Jocumsen Faces Down Variables For Early Lead On Winyah Bay

Australian Angler Jocumsen Faces Down Variables For Early Lead On Winyah Bay

[print_link]

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — A near two-hour boat ride to the Cooper River just outside of Charleston, S.C., was a risk worth taking for Australian angler Carl Jocumsen on the first day of the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay presented by GoRVing.

After a one-hour weather delay due to a thin line of quickly moving thunderstorms, Jocumsen endured a one-hour, 45-minute boat ride to access his prime fishing locations. Upon arrival, he was restricted to only three hours of fishing before having to make a return trip to the weigh-in site in Georgetown.

The risky ride paid off for Jocumsen, as he currently leads the field of 109 anglers with a limit of five bass that weighed 19 pounds, 11 ounces. Local favorite Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, S.C., is in second place with 16-8, while Matt Herren of Ashville, Ala., is holding down third with 14-6.

Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas, is in fourth with 13-13, and Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., is in fifth with 13-11.

Jocumsen, who lives in Frisco, Texas, during the tournament season, was concerned about making such a long run to fish the river system. But, after returning to the scales with 10 minutes to spare, he’s much more comfortable with his circumstances. He nicely augmented Thursday’s limit with two big bass, one was just shy of 7 pounds and the second tipped the scales at 7-3.

“I believe my fishing will remain productive,” Jocumsen said. “I can see the fish on my sonar, so I know they are there. The challenge is getting them to bite during the short window that I have to fish before making the long run back to the scales. Tidal fisheries are finicky that way — bass often only bite during short periods of the day, which makes it imperative for you to be in the right spot at the right time.”

Jocumsen said that his fishing spot has all the right ingredients to keep him in contention to win, but there are many variables that he must face and overcome.

Well before the tournament officially kicked off Thursday morning, it was predicted that the larger limits of bass would be more abundant on the Cooper River, and that a sizable number of anglers would risk the time-consuming run for a shot at heavier fish.

“Practice was up and down for me, but what I learned was crucial to how today panned out,” Myers said after weighing a limit of bass that was good enough for second place. “I caught them pretty well today, but I was concerned about how I would do after losing an hour this morning because of the weather delay.”

While not yet willing to divulge his specific location or tactics, Myers said his pattern is strong, and if he can keep good fortune on his side and access his fishing spots without trouble, he is confident in remaining consistent.

Herren is in third place and knows he is on the right size bass to stay in the hunt.

“I didn’t do anything special today, but I know there is a solid limit of fish to be caught where I’m fishing; I just need to stay in front of the changing tide,” said Herren, who ran only about half as far as Jocumsen or Myers. “I really like this kind of tournament. The conditions are tough and the fish are spread out, but I like the fact that the entire field is dealing with the same variables — it really levels the playing field.”

Each of the Top 3 anglers said that during a tough tournament like this, it’s not uncommon to see more pressure near the leaders’ fishing spots during the second day. Pressure like that can make it more difficult to stay consistent.

Also, when anglers are making such a long run, they risk mechanical failure, empty gas tanks and a myriad of potential obstacles.

The risks are substantial, but the reward that comes Sunday could certainly offset those risks. The winning angler will receive $100,000.

A full field of anglers will fish again during Friday’s second round. The field will be cut to the Top 51 for Saturday’s semi-final round, with only the Top 12 advancing to Championship Sunday.

Daily take-offs are scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, with weigh-ins scheduled at the same location each afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Locations of the final two events in the 2016 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series schedule — the Wild Card tournament and the national championship — have been decided, B.A.S.S. announced today.

The nation’s best college anglers who qualify for the 2016 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops will be competing on Green River Lake, out of Campbellsville, Ky., July 28-30.

“We are so pleased that B.A.S.S. has chosen Campbellsville for their 2016 College Series National Championship,” said Alisha Nelson, executive director of the Taylor County Tourist Commission. “This event will bring anglers and their families to our community, and we’re excited to share it with them. We hope they love our community as much as we do and come back to visit.”

Campbellsville University will play host to the more than 90 teams expected to compete.

“The staff at Campbellsville University realizes the importance of tourism and the economic impact sports tourism can bring to the community,” Nelson said. “They have gone above and beyond to make this tournament happen in Campbellsville. It wouldn’t have been possible for us to host a tournament of this size without a partnership with Campbellsville University.”

“We are excited to take our national championship to central Kentucky,” said Bassmaster College Series tournament manager Hank Weldon. “With the support of such a great host and school, we expect this tournament to be the premier event in college fishing.”

At the national championship, the entire field competes on the first two days. On the third day, the field is trimmed to the Top 12 teams catching the heaviest cumulative five-bass daily limits.

National championship takeoffs will be held at Green River State Park, and weigh-ins will be on the Campbellsville University campus.

Following the championship round, members of the Top 4 teams compete individually in the Carhartt College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops Aug. 4-6 on Kentucky Lake out of Paris, Tenn.

The top college angler in the Classic bracket competition earns an invitation to compete with the world’s top professional bass anglers in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

Teams qualify for the championship through a series of conference regional tournaments that began in February. The final qualifier is the Carhartt College Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops event, which will be held on Lake Murray, Oklahoma, June 8-10 in conjunction with GEICO Bassmaster BASSfest on nearby Lake Texoma.

This event gives competitors who do not qualify for the championship through their regional a second shot at making the national championship.

Lake Murray is a 5,700-acre lake near Ardmore, Okla., and lies within Oklahoma’s oldest and largest state park, Lake Murray State Park. During the first two competition days, anglers will weigh in at the park. On the final day, competitors will weigh in on the BASSfest stage, and the top teams in the final standings are invited to the 2016 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops.

The championship, like all Carhartt Bassmaster College Series events, will be aired on the ESPNU network.
