LAKE DARDANELLE SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION OPENER PRESENTED BY MERCURY

LAKE DARDANELLE SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION OPENER PRESENTED BY MERCURY

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (March 22, 2016) – The Costa FLW Series is headed to Lake Dardanelle March 31 to April 2 for a tournament presented by Mercury when as many as 400 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the first stop of 2016 in the Central Division.

“Lake Dardanelle is well-populated with bass so I think we’re going to see anglers utilizing a lot of different areas and techniques,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Scott Suggs of Alexander, Arkansas, the 2007 Forrest Wood Cup Champion. “Both prespawn and spawning bass will be in play which means more options for catching fish.

“In areas closer to the main river, they’ll be targeting prespawners,” Suggs continued. “The majority of the lake is stained, so we’ll likely see a lot of moving baits in play such as vibrating jigs and spinnerbaits. If the water is clear, competitors will be able to slow things down with a Texas-rigged worm or a swimbait.”

Suggs said that anglers who choose to focus on spawning bass will catch them ”blind fishing” – a term he uses to describe catching spawning bass in dirty water.

“We’ll likely see competitors dialing in on what depth and cover the bass are spawning at to find a pattern,” said Suggs. “Basically they’ll be catching spawners they can’t see. Typical spawning baits like wacky-rigged worms will be the deal. That’s how I think a lot of fish are going to be caught at this tournament.”

Suggs went on to say that a three-day total nearing 55 pounds should be enough to win the event.

“The lake is right on the verge of producing some really big weights,” said Suggs. “If someone gets the right thing going, they should be able to bring in at least two 20-pound stringers with an additional 15-pounder to round it out.”

Anglers will take off from Lake Dardanelle State Park located at 2428 Marina Road in Russellville at 7 a.m. CST each day. Weigh-in on Thursday and Friday will be held at the marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart located at 2409 E. Main St. in Russellville beginning at 4 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The tournament is being hosted by the Russellville Advertising and Promotions offices.

Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z175 with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 3-5 on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

WOODLANDS COLLEGE PARK HIGH SCHOOL WINS TEXAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP ON SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR

WOODLANDS COLLEGE PARK HIGH SCHOOL WINS TEXAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP ON SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR

JASPER, Texas (March 22, 2016) – The Woodlands College Park High School duo of Joe Beebee and Chad Mrazek brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 18 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the 2016 TBF/FLW High School Fishing Texas State Championship on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The win earned the team trophies, the title of state champions and advanced the team to the High School Fishing Southern Conference championship on Cypress Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 14-15.

For Beebee, it was his second High School Fishing state championship win. In 2014 he and partner Will Brady caught the largest five-bass limit ever weighed in FLW/TBF High School Fishing history – 32 pounds – to win the title on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. Saturday, Beebee and new partner Mrazek bested a field of 115 teams to earn the title.

The pair used a green-pumpkin and red-colored Xcite Baits jig to catch the majority of their fish.

“We caught all of our fish punching heavy mats of what we call hay grass,” said Beebee, a junior at College Park High School.

“We found that the combination of 9 to 12 feet of water and where the heavy mat was connected to the bottom seemed to be holding more fish,” said Mrazek, a sophomore at College Park.

When asked what the key to their success was the pair answered the work of the boat captain fighting the wind and staying confident when the conditions changed from their pre-fishing pattern.

The top 11 teams on Sam Rayburn Reservoir that advanced to the Southern Conference championship were:

1st:       Woodlands College Park High School, Conroe, Texas – Joe Beebee and Chad Mrazek, five bass, 18-5

2nd:      Leon High School, Jewitt, Texas – River Lee and Colby Vinyard, five bass, 16-3

3rd:       Marble Falls High School, Marble Falls, Texas – Blake Lilly and Calvin Todd, five bass, 17-10

4th:       Permian High School, Odessa, Texas – Andy Ortega and Blake Terry, five bass, 14-10

5th:       Nederland High School, Nederland, Texas – Logan Wood and Keaton Butler, five bass, 14-1

6th:       New Braunfels Christian Academy, New Braunfels, Texas – Chase Hux and Matt Nicholas, five bass, 14-0

7th:       Kirbyville High School, Kirbyville, Texas – Will Rice and Brett Herrin, five bass, 13-3

8th:       Huntington High School, Huntington, Texas – Emily Hamilton and Sam Shaw, three bass, 13-2

9th:       Splendora High School, Splendora, Texas – Hunter Goodrum and Trey Kinard, five bass, 12-13

10th:     Kirbyville High School, Kirbyville, Texas – Braden Berryman and Kenneth Pickett, five bass, 12-13

11th:     Shepherd High School, Shepherd, Texas – Tanner Moreno and Andrew Moore, five bass, 12-12

PIEDMONT BASS CLASSICS $10,000 SPRING TEAM BASS TRAIL QUALIFIER #2 RESULTS
Saturday March 19th, 2016 ~ Jordan Lake ~ Farrington Point Wildlife Ramp

[print_link]

The 2016 Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Qualifier #2 at Jordan Lake produced another  great turnout for the PBC Trails!!  The weather turned out great with air temps about 49 degrees in the am on up  to 54 in the pm. The predicted rain held off except for one little sprinkle. Water temps ranged from 62 to 67.  Winds were quiet in the am and blowing up to about 8 in the pm. A whopping total of 80 teams participated with  nearly all of them weighing in fish. Jordan will only get better in the next few weeks. Spring fishing is just about to  explode!!

Butch Trimmer & Don Boivin took their first ever win with PBC weighing in 5 bass at 28.24 lbs. for a total of  $1,344 in winnings. The team found a hot hole with 67 degree water early on and it was loaded with some nice bass which were busting top water lures at that location!

1st Place Team…Boivin on left…Trimmer on right
Seth Ellis & Jamey Caldwell took 2nd place with 5 fish weighing 27.47 lbs. They also won 1st Place TWT, 1st Place Big Fish (8.44 lbs.) and the Tow Boats US Membership Award for a grand total of $3,633.

2nd Place Team…Ellis on left…Caldwell not pictured

3rd Place Team,  Tony Fofi & Dave Murdock, had 5 weighing 26.81 lbs. and along with 2nd Place TWT, they took home $1,345!!
The 2nd Place Big Fish (8.20 lbs.) was caught by the team of Johnny Wilder & Mike Harris netting them $474.

290 fish were weighed in for a total of 1,079 pounds for an average of 3.72 lbs. each. Most of the fish were caught  on WLS shaky heads, crankbaits, Bass Alarm Buzz Baits, Shanes A-rigs, Sharp Shooter jigs and jerk baits in 8 foot of water or less. Water temps are very important now and bass are starting to bed in the shallower water.

I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail. Our next tournament is Saturday March 26th, the Piedmont Bass Classics Easter Open at Falls Lake out of Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp.

GROVE, Okla. (March 21, 2016) – Kyle Kitts of Joplin, Missouri, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 23 pounds, 11 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament of 2016 on Grand Lake. For his victory, Kitts took home $6,975.

“The key for me was fishing the docks and banks that the wind was blowing into,” said Kitts, who earned the first victory of his career in FLW competition. “It was extremely windy and most people were trying to avoid it as much as possible, myself included. But once I started catching them I realized I needed to fish the areas where the bait was being blown.

“I used a Yum Baits Yumbrella Flash Mob Jr. with white Keitech Swing Impact swimbaits all day long. I fished around deep water all day, but the bass were all pretty shallow. Even when I’d pull up and fish some of the deeper docks, the bass were suspended right below the surface.”

Kitts said that he caught 12 or 13 keepers throughout the day, and weighed in two fish that were more than 5 pounds.

“They bit pretty steadily throughout the day,” Kitts said. “It seems like I’ve been fishing in BFL events for a long time, and these tournaments are always very tough. It’s really nice to finally get a win.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Kyle Kitts, Joplin, Mo., five bass, 23-11, $6,975

2nd:         Eric Faucett, Moore, Okla., five bass, 21-9, $2,737

ABBEVILLE’S DAUGHTRY WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE BAMA DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE MARTIN PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

ABBEVILLE’S DAUGHTRY WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE BAMA DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE MARTIN PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Crane Hill’s Johnson wins co-angler title

[print_link]

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (March 21, 2016) – Scott Daughtry of Abbeville, Alabama, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bama Division tournament of 2016 on Lake Martin presented by Navionics. For his victory, Daughtry took home $4,866.

“The win really caught my by surprise,” said Daughtry, who earned his first win in his 29th career tournament in FLW competition. “I knew that my 9-pounder was likely to win the big bass award, but I really didn’t think that I had enough weight to go with it to win. It was a very nice surprise.”

Daughtry said that he caught his winning stringer up the Tallapoosa River, targeting clean water in the backs of pockets.

“I had found some fish on Friday in practice that I shook off to save, so I ran right back to those pockets when the tournament started,” Daughtry said. “I was fishing a jig, while my co-angler was fishing a Hematoma-colored Reaction Innovations Kinky Beaver. I couldn’t get a bite, while my co-angler caught eight keepers behind me, including a 5-pounder.

“He only had three of the Kinky Beavers, but he was kind enough to share one of them with me. It had been chewed up and was pretty mangled, but I super-glued it back together and it worked great. My co-angler ended up catching 21 or 22 bass throughout the day, while I ended up with seven. My first bite was the 9-2.”

Daughtry said that he Texas-rigged the Kinky Beaver with a 1/8-ounce weight and that the key to the presentation was fishing extremely slow.

“You really had to let the bait soak. I knew that those fish were going to be there, the key was just fishing it really slow and persistent. We ran pocket after pocket right behind other boats and were catching fish right behind them. It was a very fun day.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Scott Daughtry, Abbeville, Ala., five bass, 15-3, $4,866

2nd:         David Millsaps, Ranger, Ga., five bass, 14-10, $2,136

3rd:          David Gaston, Sylacauga, Ala., five bass, 14-8, $1,424

4th:          Terry Tucker, Gadsden, Ala., five bass, 14-4, $925

4th:          Scott Hayes, Newnan, Ga., five bass, 14-4, $925

6th:          Ben Weldon, Wetumpka, Ala., five bass, 14-0, $783

7th:          Michael Luster, Prattville, Ala., five bass, 13-8, $712

8th:          Chris Baxter, Winder, Ga., five bass, 13-4, $941

9th:          Marty Giddens, Alpine, Ala., five bass, 11-11, $569

10th:        Mark Richardson, Eastanollee, Ga., five bass, 11-6, $498

Complete results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Cory Johnson of Crane Hill, Alabama, weighed in five bass totaling 12 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to earn $2,136 and win the co-angler division.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

2nd:         Slaton Jemison, Mathews, Ala., five bass, 11-12, $1,068

3rd:          Michael Reed, Maylene, Ala., five bass, 11-5, $712

4th:          Rusty Smith, Six Mile, S.C., five bass, 11-4, $498

5th:          Randy Smith, Fayetteville, Ga., five bass, 9-14, $427

6th:          Dennis Sandoval, Decatur, Ala., five bass, 9-10, $374

6th:          Dennis McGouirk, Carrollton, Ga., five bass, 9-10, $671

8th:          Chance Hebert, Norcross, Ga., five bass, 9-9, $320

9th:          Mike Chirico, Brundidge, Ala., five bass, 9-8, $285

10th:        Ricky Parpolowicz, Decatur, Ala., five bass, 9-3, $249

McGouirk caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the co-angler division, a fish weighing 5 pounds, 2 ounces and earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $297.

The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 27-29 Regional Championship on Lake Hartwell in Seneca, South Carolina. BYRDSTOWN’S JOHNSON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MOUNTAIN DIVISION OPENER ON DALE HOLLOW LAKE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

BYRDSTOWN’S JOHNSON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MOUNTAIN DIVISION OPENER ON DALE HOLLOW LAKE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

Sensabaugh wins co-angler title

[print_link]

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (March 21, 2016) – Billy Joe Johnson of Byrdstown, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 22 pounds, 8 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament of 2016 on Dale Hollow Lake. For his victory, Johnson took home $5,582.

“I fished around 12 to 15 different staging areas and caught the majority of my fish in 10 to 14 feet of water,” said Johnson, who earned his second career BFL win on Dale Hollow Lake. “I caught 11 largemouth, with a few smallmouth mixed in. My limit that I weighed consisted of all largemouth, though, and all of the fish that went to the scale came on a Yum Baits Yumbrella Flash Mob Jr.”

Johnson said that he did manage a few keepers on a jerkbait, but the umbrella rig was the key to his success.

“I’ve been fishing Dale Hollow for a long time,” Johnson said. “My buddies and I used to catch a lot of fish and win tournaments with jerkbaits and spinnerbaits, but now you can’t really compete unless you’re throwing an umbrella rig. I believe the majority of guys that were in the top 10 were throwing it.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Billy Joe Johnson, Byrdstown, Tenn., five bass, 22-8, $5,582

2nd:         Joe Haunert, West Chester, Ohio, five bass, 19-13, $2,791

3rd:          Jonathan Green, East Bernstadt, Ky., five bass, 18-9, $1,861

4th:          Bill Bowling, Somerset, Ky., five bass, 18-2, $1,302

Boones Mill’s McRoy wins co-angler title

BEDFORD, Va. (March 21, 2016) – Steven Coleman of Madison Heights, Virginia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 4 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Shenandoah Division tournament of 2016 on Smith Mountain Lake. For his victory, Coleman took home $5,565.

“I’m still in shock,” said Coleman, who was fishing in his first event ever as a professional in BFL competition. “I went to the Blackwater River arm and ran pockets, looking for stained water. I knew that with as many boats that there were in this event that a lot of people would be looking for clear water. I figured that if I fished the stained water then I wouldn’t have to try to fight the crowds to get a good spot.

“I lost a 5-pounder right away, and I really thought that I had just lost the tournament when that one came off,” Coleman continued. “If you want to win you cannot have any mistakes, so when I lost that first fish it was pretty disheartening. I just put my head down and kept fishing, running pockets and skipping boat docks.”

Coleman said that he only had six bites all day – the 5-pounder that he lost along with the five fish that he weighed in. Four of his five stringer fish came on an unnamed 3/8-ounce black and blue jig with a black and blue Zoom Super Chunk trailer. One came via a white and purple-colored War Eagle spinnerbait.

“The key for me was my decision making,” Coleman went on to say. “I didn’t panic when I lost that big one and I knew what I had to do – keep my head down and grind it out.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Steven Coleman, Madison Heights, Va., five bass, 20-4, $5,565

2nd:         Bradley Staley, Pleasant Garden, N.C., five bass, 19-11, $2,783

ANDERSON, S.C. (March 20, 2016) – Florida pro John Cox, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 16 pounds, 2 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Hartwell presented by Evinrude. Cox’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 67 pounds, 6 ounces earned him the win by a slim 7-ounce margin over second place angler Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, and $100,000 in the second FLW Tour event of 2016.

“It feels absolutely incredible to win this event,” said Cox, who now leads the 2016 FLW Angler of the Year race. “I haven’t won a Tour event in five years. Everything just came together for me this week.”

Cox said he spent the first three days of the tournament scouring nearly 70 miles of shoreline in search of spawning bass. He said his most productive baits were a wacky-rigged, watermelon-seed-colored Yamamoto Senko and Zoom Trick Worm.

“I ran to as many pockets as I could and caught most of my stringers off of beds,” said Cox. “My biggest bass of the tournament, a 6-pound, 11-ouncer, actually came off of a dock. It was crazy because I caught that one as I was targeting a 3-pounder.”

On day four, Cox said he decided to concentrate on a ¼-mile stretch of dirty water near Seneca that he called ”the pond”. He said he rotated between a black and blue jig and a Z-Man ChatterBait in a variety of cover and ended up boating seven keepers.

“I put my head down and got to work,” said Cox. “I threw to various pieces of wood and some rocks, basically anything on the bank. Every 200 yards I’d get a bite. I ended up catching each stringer fish from a different piece of cover. It’s amazing that I could spend three days running for miles sight-fishing, and then all of a sudden do so well in a such a small area.”

The Florida pro said that his decision to stay in the pond ultimately got him the win.

“Every time I tried to leave the area, I’d catch one,” said Cox. “I ended up being in there all day. It worked out perfectly.”

The top 10 pros finished the tournament:

1st:          John Cox, DeBary, Fla., 20 bass, 67-6, $100,000

3rd:          Jamie Horton, Centerville, Ala., 20 bass, 62-9, $25,000

4th:          Jeff Gustafson, Keewatin, Ontario, Canada, 20 bass, 59-14, $20,000

5th:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 59-8, $19,000
