Pullins wins co-angler title

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (March 14, 2016) – Local angler Marcus Sykora of Osage Beach, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 24 pounds, 15 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Ozark Division tournament of 2016 on Lake of the Ozarks. For his victory, Sykora took home $6,336.

Sykora said he focused on the Bagnell Dam area, fishing steep banks that led into flatter pockets.

“The bass were grouped up in transition areas along an 18-mile stretch,” said Sykora, the 2014 BFL All-American Champion. “I used a chartreuse and white-colored War Eagle Spinnerbait and a 6th Sense Crush Flat 75X Crankbait. I threw the spinnerbait on the steeper structure, and the crankbait when it flattened out.”

The Missouri angler said his bait color was crucial to his catch and he caught 12 keepers throughout the day.

“With the stain we had in the water, those colors ended up attracting the largest fish,” said Sykora. “Even if the bite was slow, I knew I had to keep pushing on and sooner or later I’d trip over a big one. I ended up hitting nearly 25 different spots.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Marcus Sykora, Osage Beach, Mo., five bass, 24-15, $6,336

REAGAN WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MUSIC CITY DIVISION OPENER ON DALE HOLLOW LAKE

Humphrey wins co-angler title

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (March 14, 2016) – Local angler Robert Reagan of Byrdstown, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 10 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Music City Division tournament of 2016 on Dale Hollow Lake. For his victory, Reagan took home $7,155.

Reagan said he caught his winning stringer out of mid-lake chunk rock scattered throughout 20 different areas. He said he was able to catch four bass fairly quickly using a homemade jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Zoom Super Speed Craw.

“I caught them shallow in 3 to 4 feet of water,” said Reagan, who earned his second career win in FLW competition. “After that, my goal was to find the largest kicker possible.”

Around noon, Reagan said the jig bite slowed down so he began targeting channel banks within his areas using an umbrella rig with SXE Shad-colored Roboworm EZ Shad swimbaits.

“The bass were near the surface and bit as soon as the rig hit the water,” said Reagan. “I was only able to get two in the boat, but they were decent-sized fish.

“My biggest bass came on the umbrella rig and that put me on top,” Reagan went on to say. “I don’t think I would’ve won without it.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Robert Reagan, Byrdstown, Tenn., five bass, 20-10, $5,155 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Jonathan Green, East Bernstadt, Ky., five bass, 19-6, $2,078

3rd:          Daniel Johnson, Lebanon, Tenn., five bass, 18-12, $1,383

4th:          Gary Bowens, Byrdstown, Tenn., five bass, 17-9, $970

5th:          Rick Looper, Livingston, Tenn., five bass, 17-0, $831

6th:          William Merrick, Mount Juliet, Tenn., five bass, 16-10, $727

6th:          Brock Jones, Livingston, Tenn., five bass, 16-10, $727

RECENT SURVEY SAYS ANGLERS CHOOSE FRABILL LANDING NETS MORE THAN ANY OTHER BRAND

RECENT SURVEY SAYS ANGLERS CHOOSE FRABILL LANDING NETS MORE THAN ANY OTHER BRAND

[print_link]

Plano, IL (March 14, 2016) – Southwick Associates, the nation’s premier outdoors market research firm, has announced the fishing brands anglers purchased most frequently in 2015. Results were compiled from the 13,347 internet-based surveys completed by panelists who volunteered to participate last year in Southwick Associates’ AnglerSurvey.com polls.

In 2015, anglers participating in the surveys said they purchased Frabill landing nets more than any other brand.

“When it comes to fishing accessories, Frabill is the brand anglers have trusted for over 70 years,” says Plano Synergy Director of Marketing, Ben Rand, who was humbled but not surprised by the recent AnglerSurvey.com findings. “Frabill makes the gear that helps ensure a great experience on the water. Like the rest of our product lineup, our popular Conservation Series Landing Nets are engineered and manufactured to provide years of faithful, worry-free service,” he continues.

Frabill Conservation Series Nets

Frabill’s popular Conservation Series nets are designed with safe catch and release in mind. All nets feature 100% knotless mesh netting, eliminating fish injuries commonly caused by sharp knots. Flat, linear bottoms on the net bags reduce fish rolling and support weight evenly, while a proprietary tangle-free coating preserves a fish’s protective slime coat and prevents hooks from entangling in the net.

Frabill Conservation Series nets feature extremely durable handles, hoops, yokes and other high-end componentry, and are offered in a series of species-specific designs that make proper net selection easy for any angler.

Frabill Crankbait Series Nets

Designed for quick removal of multiple-hook lures, the specialty netting on Frabill Crankbait Series nets takes the sting out of crankbaits, spoons, topwaters, swimbaits, and any anything sprouting hooks.

“This isn’t just another rubber net. In fact, it’s not just another coated net. This netting was developed after several years of trial and error to perfect its design,” says Freshwater Hall of Fame inductee and Frabill prostaff Tom Neustrom. “From the way the material is woven, to the shape of the loop and the composite of the coating, this netting makes untangling hooks a breeze.”

It all starts with the Crankbait Net’s unique hexagonal mesh that resists snarls from all styles of hooks. Second is the fabric’s knotless composition that further denies hook-points. Third, the meshing is sealed in poke-resistant double-dipped flat-black vinyl coating, which means there’s nothing for even the most razor-sharp hook’s point to penetrate. As well, Crankbait Nets are easy on the fish’s fins, scales and protective slime on account of the flat-bottom blueprint that supports fish head to tail.

Crankbait Nets are now offered in three sizes and on several of Frabill’s most admired hoop and handle options, including the Conservation Series 9517, 9521 and 9522, and the Conservation’s saltwater-safe 9510 and 9512, as well the Tru-Trax 3813 and 3814 and Sportsman Net’s 3443 and 3444.

Don’t be afraid to ladle up a lunker net time one smashes a crankbait. Frabill’s new Crankbait Nets take the crankiness out of fishing…and that’s definitely a high-five moment.

Home-Lake Knowledge Pays for Walters on Santee

[print_link]

Todd Walters celebrates with his wife Leiding and son Patrick.

Co-angler Todd Walters of Summerville, S.C., has fished and duck hunted on Santee Cooper all his life, and today he proved how well he knows it with a victory in the co-angler division of the Costa FLW Series event presented by Frabill.

Todd Walters

After weighing in 20 pounds, 13 ounces on day one and 13-13 on day two, Walters saved the best for last, checking in 21-1 on the final day for a three-day total of 55-11.

“This feels great to win here in front of all my friends and family,” Walters says. “We are all going to celebrate tonight.”

With all his experience on lakes Marion and Moultrie – the two lakes that are joined together by a canal to create the Santee Cooper system – Walters knew exactly what he was going to throw and where he was going to throw it at every spot that his pros took him. Some of the places Walters visited this week he has waded while duck hunting, so he knows where all the stumps and depressions are located.

“Bradley [Dortch] took me down to the hatchery today, and that’s my home. I know a lot of things about that place,” Walters says.

Second attempted...

Walters’ bait of choice all week was a green pumpkin Zoom Ol’ Monster worm rigged with a 1/16-ounce weight and fished on a spinning rod. He used 30-pound-test braid joined to 12-pound-test fluorocarbon by a uni-knot.

“The fish on Santee Cooper like big plastics fished real slow,” Walters says. “I mean, I don’t just throw to a stump; I want to rub that stump, get hung up on it, and sort of shake it free, and then just let it soak for 15 seconds. Then you’ll just feel your line tighten up, and it’s game on.”

For his win, Walters received a Ranger Z117 with a 90-hp outboard and $6,100 in cash.

THRIFT CATCHES 30 POUNDS, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNEY ON SANTEE COOPER PRESENTED BY FRABILL

THRIFT CATCHES 30 POUNDS, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNEY ON SANTEE COOPER PRESENTED BY FRABILL

[print_link]

MANNING, S.C. (March 12, 2016) – FLW Tour star Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, weighed a monster five-bass limit totaling 30 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division event on Santee Cooper presented by Frabill with a three-day total of 14 bass weighing 79 pounds, 15 ounces. For his win, Thrift earned $48,200 and a new Ranger Z518 bass boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard engine.

“It’s really nice to get a win after the terrible start that I’d had to begin this season,” said Thrift, who earned his eighth career win in FLW competition and pushed his career earnings to more than $1.75 million. “The two poor finishes at Okeechobee were a pretty big monkey on my back. I had no idea how I’d do in this event after my practice, but it was a fun tournament and I brought in the biggest bag that I’ve ever weighed today.”

Thrift estimated that he caught 10 fish on day one, just four on day two, and around 20 today, the third and final day of competition. He junk-fished throughout the week, catching fish on a green-pumpkin Damiki Mamba jig with a Damiki Knock Out or a Zoom Super Chunk, a Damiki DC200 crankbait, an unnamed frog and a Rat-L-Trap.

“I’m pretty sure that I caught fish in all three phases of the spawn,” Thrift said. “The key for me this week was my signature series 6’9” Fitzgerald Skipping Special rod. It has enough tip to get the bass out of the wood but is still small enough to be able to skip a jig into areas that a longer rod can’t.”

Thrift lived up to his nickname of “Smoke on the Water”, as he fished both Marion and Moultrie lakes in all three days of competition and estimated that he used 30 to 35 gallons of gasoline each day.

“I guarantee that I ran faster and farther than anyone this week,” Thrift said on stage. “My Ranger and (Evinrude) G2 ran flawlessly. I didn’t re-visit any of the same spots and ran all new water every day.”

The top 10 pros on Santee Cooper were:

1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 14 bass, 79-15, $48,200 and a Ranger Z518 w/ 200-horsepower outboard

2nd:         Pat Fisher, Colbert, Ga., 15 bass, 76-2, $19,500

Mr. “I never win anything” Wins Big at 2016 Bassmaster Classic – Still Time to Win

Humminbird Contest

STILL TIME TO WIN – TWO TRIPS LEFT!

Mr. “I never win anything” Wins Big at 2016 Bassmaster Classic

[print_link]

Humminbird surprises volunteer high school fishing coach Sam Reynolds with a trip for two to Billy Chapman Jr.’s Anglers Inn International, Lake El Salto, Mexico!

Eufaula, AL (March 11, 2016): The unassuming Sam Reynolds describes himself as “a guy who never wins anything.” But all that changed on the evening of Sunday, March 6th at the final day weigh-in of the 2016 Bassmaster Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The 66-year-old Sanger, Texas native won a big prize … and it wasn’t an electric leg lamp.

Reynolds, retired from 32 years of building trucks for Peterbilt Motors Company, now spends his free time as a volunteer captain for the Sanger, Texas high school bass fishing team. “I enjoy working with the kids, it’s real rewarding,” says Reynolds.

Most recently, that meant chaperoning 16-year-old son Teddy and teammates to the biggest event in bass fishing, the 2016 Bassmaster Classic. Little did he know that as he and his group filed down the stairs into Tulsa’s BOK Center destiny was indeed unfolding.

Randomly sitting in a seat emblazoned with Humminbird’s logo underneath, Reynolds had no idea that this was his day in the limelight. To him, it was simply a good spot to enjoy the final weigh-in. “I sat in that same seat during the second day weigh-in. The kids gave me the spot so I had the end,” laughs Reynolds.

(l-r): Billy Chapman Jr. (Anglers Inn), Sam Reynolds, Teddy Reynolds, Kevin VanDam, Jeff Kolodzinski (Humminbird)

As Kevin VanDam and Dave Mercer announced Humminbird’s “El Salto Revealed” Giveaway onstage, Reynolds and company cheered when loudspeakers boomed, “Who wants to go to Anglers Inn on El Salto, the greatest big bass lake in the world?”

The emcees then directed everyone in the stadium to look under their seats. Seconds later Reynolds yelled “I won, I can’t believe it” and the arena spotlights lit up his seat in the crowd, K1 of Section 121.

“My buddy saw the whole thing live online. Funny thing, he was supposed to take the boys, but had a tournament, so I volunteered. His wife said he started hollering and cheering when I stood up,” says Reynolds.

Anglers Inn owner Billy Chapman Jr. remarks, “I’m honored to part of this promotion with Humminbird, and I am looking forward to showing Sam and Teddy the dream fishing trip of a lifetime! They will have the opportunity to catch and break their new personal best bass numerous times during their stay at my resort – and on video for the world to see!”

Turns out Reynolds is a Humminbird user but of more simple roots, with two compact Humminbird 386 units installed on his bass boat. “I was looking really hard at upgrading to the HELIX 7 SI GPS with a little income tax money. I did not expect this,” says Reynolds.

Not only will Reynolds and his son get the chance to catch the bass of a lifetime over five days at Anglers Inn, they’ll also help map the greatest big bass lake in the world with Humminbird’s AutoChart Live, which comes standard on HELIX 9, 10 and 12 CHIRP units. Plus, Reynolds also receives a Humminbird HELIX 10 SI GPS KVD edition to upgrade his own boat.

The story only gets better. While the last few spectators trickled out of the BOK Center Reynolds also met 4-time Bassmaster Classic champion Kevin VanDam, who walked over to personally congratulate the father and son, as well provide a few fishing tips for his upcoming trip to famed Anglers Inn on Lake El Salto, Mexico.

“Not only did I win, I got to meet one of my favorite pros! I wanted KVD’s autograph earlier on but the lines were too long. Didn’t figure I’d meet him and get to talk to him for so long. He gave me some good advice, like deep diving crankbaits for the giant bass and topwaters in the morning. I really enjoyed talking with him.”

Reynolds adds: “It was an exciting day. Tell you what, I didn’t get one bit sleepy driving home!”

STILL TIME TO WIN – TWO TRIPS LEFT!

Humminbird will be sending two more lucky anglers and one guest each to Billy Chapman Jr.’s Anglers Inn International at Lake El Salto, Mexico! Not only will the winners have a shot at the bass of a lifetime, each will get the chance to explore and map the El Salto using Humminbird® AutoChart® Live.

Winners Receive:

  • Free trip for two including hotel, airfare and meals
  • 4 night stay at Anglers Inn El Salto fishing resort
  • 5 days of guided fishing

Entering is simple: Visit Humminbird’s Facebook page, click on the “El Salto Revealed” button, fill out your info, take a simple quiz, and hit ENTER! Plano, IL (March 11, 2016) – Whoever coined the phrase, “less is more” was probably ashamed of his undersized and underperforming tackle bag. Less storage capacity? No thanks. Fewer features? Um… no. Less functionality? Okay, as long as it’s your bag, not mine.

New for 2016, Plano is proud to introduce a newly designed family of tackle bags offering more high-capacity storage than ever before.

Meet the all-new M-Series, which includes two sizes of core M-Series Tackle Bags (3600 and 3700 sizes), as well the M-Series Messenger Bag and M-Series Hydro-Flo™ Tackle Bag, magnum-caliber offerings from the masters of tackle management.

Plano M-Series 3700 and 3600 Tackle Bag

Available in familiar, industry-standard 3600 and 3700 sizes, Plano’s new M-Series Tackle Bags feature mighty main compartments that hold up to eight fully-loaded StowAway Utility Boxes; a delightfully cavernous capacity that is sure to have guides, tournament anglers and any other lure-centric fishing fanatics smiling from ear to ear.

On the exterior, these striking olive green bags with cerulean blue accents feature a total of eight zippered pockets and four slip pockets to secure all tools, accessories and gear in easily accessible locations. An impact-resistant and waterproof base prevents both slipping and soaking in sloppy locations.

A tournament field of 169 boats will compete in next week’s event, March 17-20 on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina.
