Humminbird® SmartStrike® Coming to HELIX® 9, 10 and 12 CHIRP

Humminbird® SmartStrike® Coming to HELIX® 9, 10 and 12 CHIRP

HELIX anglers gain revolutionary fish-patterning power; free software download available this month

EUFAULA, AL (March 3, 2016) – Previously compatible with Humminbird® ONIX® units only, revolutionary fish-patterning program SmartStrike® will soon be compatible with HELIX® 9, 10, and 12 CHIRP. That’s big news for any angler who wants to eliminate unnecessary searching and wasted casts.

“If the features available in HELIX 9, 10 and 12 CHIRP like AutoChart® Live weren’t impressive enough, we’ve added SmartStrike compatibility to really kick it up a notch,” says Humminbird brand manager, Jeff Kolodzinski. “Whether you’re a pro angler or taking the family out on a weekend fishing trip our goal is always the same – to find and catch fish in a very limited amount of time. SmartStrike does just that by helping anglers develop fish-catching patterns quicker than ever before.”

Here’s how it works: SD card-based cartography product SmartStrike allows anglers to quickly run searches for various target species by entering criteria like season, time of day, water conditions, cloud cover, wind, depth, structure, slope, aspect, sun & current exposure, and more. A press of the button later and your LakeMaster HD map comes alive with color-illuminated spots to investigate, greatly reducing the amount of time it takes to learn new lakes, reservoirs and rivers – not to mention, teach us more about home waters.

“SmartStrike is a great pre-fishing tool that can be used before you even hit the water,” says 4-time Bassmaster Classic Champion Kevin VanDam. “Enter your various criteria and it automatically highlights high-probability areas of the lake to fish. Then, once you get on the water, you can use SmartStrike to narrow it down even more. It’s kind of like having your own guide or local knowledge.”

Not only does SmartStrike help anglers locate and pattern fish more efficiently, once you find fish in a given area, simply click on that area, select Find Similar Areas, and millions of data points are searched to return other areas just like it. Combine that with simultaneous use of Humminbird LakeMaster’s patented Depth Highlight, Shallow Water Highlight and Water Level Offset, and creating milk runs has never been easier and more rewarding.

Get Software Update Notification

Humminbird Helix 9, 10 and 12 CHIRP users should verify they have registered their product in the free Humminbird Select Program for automatic notification when the new software becomes available later this month. The software update will allow compatibility with SmartStrike for eleven North American regions, including Dakotas/Nebraska, Great Lakes, Great Plains, Mid-South States, Mid-Atlantic States, Minnesota, Northeast States, Southeast States, Western States, Wisconsin and Woods/Rainy, purchased separately.

With any of these SmartStrike map cards anglers can take advantage of awesome LakeMaster features, including the following:

  • Minn Kota® i-Pilot® Link™ compatibility
  • Easy-to-read contours
  • Depth Highlight Range
  • Water Level Offset
  • Shallow Water Highlight
  • Scrollable Lake List

A classic prediction By Jason Houchins

A classic prediction

By Jason Houchins

[print_link]

With the Super Bowl of professional bass fishing starting today, I can’t help but wonder as I always do, what it would be like to compete at the highest level. I know a few people personally who have, and by just by talking with them about it I can feel their excitement. What is going through the minds of rookie contenders and veterans alike as the Bassmasters Classic begins? How do they mentally and physically prepare for such an event? For many years I’ve watched in amazement as some of my heroes (Woo Daves and Denny Brauer) hoisted the trophy after years of chasing it. I remember when Takahiro won the Classic, and I actually cried as he rode around the stadium alone celebrating his victory. Look at what he sacrificed just to be a professional bass fisherman. He left his friends and family to come to a foreign country and live in a camper/ tow van to accomplish his dreams. He won the Bassmasters Classic! All these are pretty compelling Classic memories that are now history. What will this year’s Classic memory be? Will history play a role?
Reading all the latest reports and practice information from everyone, Grande looks a lot like several lakes around the country. It’s muddy, a little high, and colder than normal. These few factors will definitely help level the playing field in this cast of great fisherman. I believe that someone as always will figure this one out and bring a significant catch to the scales but I look for it to be someone who is an unknown to the world of bass fishing. Crankbaits and Jigs will most likely dominate this tournament as low visibility will hamper the possible jerkbait bite that played such a huge factor the last time the Classic was at Grande. All of this will definitely play a big physiological factor as well, and histories past memories and patterns will be erased with the current conditions of the lake.
I do most things fishing related with my gut. I’m not into all the little fine details that most people are about tournament fishing. I’m sure it has cost me in the past but I’m also sure it’s helped shaped me much more in the big picture of tournament angling. That being said my Classic pick is definitely a gut thing and has to be, considering this guy has never fished one. Nothing satisfies me more than to see someone in any walk of life work, scrape, and claw to get their opportunity. Most of us fish at the modest levels in the world of bass fishing just trying to break even as fishing will never be more than a passion to us. Be it financial strains, careers, family, jobs, or a combination of these things, we know we will never get that chance. But seeing a man that I have competed against for many years make to the Classic, sorry but he’s my pick.
Fabian Rodriguez has fished at all levels of competition throughout the many years and has the stripes to prove it. He has earned his way through the BASS Nation this year to compete in his first ever Classic. This guy is no rookie and to underestimate him would be quite foolish. His battle scars of Federation and BASS Opens of years past has help mold him into the perfect Classic Underdog. Someone who is an everyday guy who loves to fish and has juggled career, family, and fishing for many years. He didn’t qualify through a college team event, he didn’t win one tournament and coast his way to the Classic, he did it through maybe the toughest way possible, via the Federation. Do I have stats to from Classics past to back up my pick, of course not. I have nothing but a gut feeling and the belief that someone who has struggled to get to the Classic and is an everyday guy is going to have his day. Maybe its wishful thinking, or maybe it’s just me justifying my own hope as possibly being in his position one day. No matter the reason, whether it’s a genuine belief, a hope, or deep down me trying to live vicariously through someone else, I’m rooting for him to win it all!

LAKE HARTWELL SET TO HOST WALMART FLW TOUR EVENT PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

LAKE HARTWELL SET TO HOST WALMART FLW TOUR EVENT PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

Multiple patterns in play for World’s Best Bass Anglers at 150th FLW Tour Event

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. (March 3, 2016) – The second tournament of the 21st season of the Walmart FLW Tour, the most competitive circuit in professional bass-fishing, continues March 17-20 with the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Hartwell presented by Evinrude. Hosted by the Anderson Convention & Visitors Bureau, the tournament will feature 170 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

The Lake Hartwell event will mark the organization’s 150th FLW Tour event, dating back to event No. 1 in 1996.

“With the warming trend we’ve had, Lake Hartwell is going to fish really well for this tournament,” said Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, South Carolina, the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup Champion. “Fish will be feeding heavily in preparation for the spawn which means there’ll be a lot of opportunities for anglers to fish to their strengths.”

Gagliardi said that both shallow- and deep-water patterns will likely come into play for tournament competitors.

“Any time you have a lake with a healthy population of both largemouth and spotted bass, you’re going to have a lot of different depth options and more fishable water,” said Gagliardi. “I think we’re going to see anglers targeting spotted bass near points, drops and humps. If anglers prefer to focus on largemouths, they’ll likely be found congregating in creeks near rocks and wood. It’s going to come down to which areas are most active.”

Gagliardi went on to say that craw- and shad-colored baits will likely be favored by competitors due to the prespawn feeding frenzy.

“I see football-head jigs and finesse worms on a drop-shot rig doing well out deep,” said Gagliardi. “Anglers choosing to tackle the shallow water will likely be running crankbaits near points or flipping a jig in the backs of bays. That’s the great thing about Hartwell. We’re going to see a lot of quality stringers caught using all kinds of techniques.”

Gagliardi finished by saying that a four-day catch weighing 70 pounds should be enough to win the event.

In FLW Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2016 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Wheeler Lake in Huntsville, Alabama, Aug. 4-7 and is hosted by the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Anglers will take off and weigh-in on all four days of competition at Green Pond Landing located at 470 Green Pond Road in Anderson at 7:30 a.m. each day. Weigh-ins on Thursday and Friday will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s final weigh-ins will begin at 4 p.m.

Fans will also be treated to the FLW Expo on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at Green Pond Landing prior to the final weigh-ins. The Expo includes interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and the opportunity to interact with professional anglers to learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public.

As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit students at Lakeside Middle School in Anderson on Wednesday, March 16, from 8-9:30 a.m. to introduce students to fishing and outdoor activities in their community. During the presentations the pro anglers will reinforce how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) relate to outdoor activities as well as boating safety. The presentation will promote the sport of fishing and outdoor recreation and give youth the information they need to “Get Outdoors. Go Fish!”

Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at Chris Taylor Memorial Park located at 5 Jim Ed Rice Circle in Anderson on Saturday, March 19, from 9-11 a.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to area youth 15 years of age and younger and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. All bait is provided by the DMF Bait Company.

St. Croix sports serious mojo; demos new Mojo rods and kicks-off contest at the Classic

[print_link]

Mr. Mojo Risin’

St. Croix sports serious mojo; demos new Mojo rods and kicks-off contest at the Classic

Park Falls, WI (March 2, 2016) – There isn’t a singular trait that propels a tournament angler to victory. Knowledge of the lake? Yep. Adaptability? Sure thing. Mastery of multiple techniques? No brainer. Luck? It plays a role, too…

Yet there is this one characteristic, or rather vibe that elevates one angler to the podium while the rest of the field find themselves packing. St. Croix calls it “mojo,” and in fact named multiple series’ of smooth operating sticks after this electric, intangible feeling of invincibility.

Mojo Bass

Released in 2009, roundabout the time the Pittsburgh Steelers were being showered in tickertape, Mojo Bass nearly altered the earth’s orbit. (Befitting for “The Best Rods on Earth”) Primo, yet shockingly affordable, Mojo Bass rods were instantly stripped from rod racks everywhere, and lauded by bass fishing junkies for being so sweet for the dollar.

For 2016, St. Croix Rod has re-mojo-ized the lineup, improving what were already killer features paired with distinctive technology.

“We’ve updated the graphite in Mojo Bass rods to feature our premium, high-modulus SCIII blanks, along with [Integrated Poly Curve®] IPC® tooling technology,” said St. Croix Vice President of Brand Management, Jeff Schluter. “This makes the rods lighter, more sensitive, more durable and fish with improved balance. We also tweaked the rod assortment to match current trends in bass fishing techniques.” This means specialty rods like a 6’ 8” spinning for Wacky Worms and a 7’ 10” casting rod for Alabama Rigs and Swimbaits. All told, there are 17 technique-specific models in the Mojo Bass assortment.

Brandishing Mojo Bass’ popular Black Cherry Metallic finish, the SCIII blanks are created with advanced high-modulus graphite, making the rods up to 15% lighter than before. St. Croix’s exclusive IPC technology aims to eliminate all transitional points in the rod blank, yielding smoother actions, increased strength and greater sensitivity.

Mojo Bass will continue featuring Kigan Master Hand 3D guides with slim, strong aluminum-oxide rings surrounded by stylish black frames. The thread wraps are protected with two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish.

A Fuji® ECS reel seat with black hood graces the casting models, as a Fuji® DPS reel seat with black hoods comes standard on spinning rods. The split-grip/premium-grade cork handle offers extreme comfort and sensitivity in the hand. And let us not forget the exclusive Kigan hook-keeper, which holds lures steadfast while at rest. Mojo Bass Glass models sport all this on a super-premium, 100% linear S-glass blank.

Mojo Bass Fly

St. Croix wasn’t happy with just spreading mojo to the conventional bass angler. No, it was time to infuse that fishing buzz with other groups of anglers. And hey, why not the most classic of the classics and formal of the formals…the fly angler. Boom! Time to feel the mojo, Mr. River Runs Through It.

Also new for 2016, Mojo Bass Fly was conceived to both offer the traditional fly angler a rod for subduing hulking quarry, as well as get conventional bass anglers to reach across the aisles to fly fishing.

Winner of ICAST’s “Best of Show” in the Fly Fishing category, Mojo Bass Fly successfully achieved both intended results.

All three models of Mojo Bass Fly (MBF7117.2, MBF7118.2, MBF7119.2) are built on St. Croix’s lightweight yet sensitive SCII graphite 2-peice blanks—Black Cherry Metallic in color just like their spinning and casting brethren—and designed with a moderate-fast action for quick, untroubled loading during the cast. Premium-grade cork graces the grip, and reels are snugged securely with uplocking, machined-aluminum reel seats. Fly lines slide through the Kigan Master Hand 3D stripper guides and hard-chrome snake guides with ease. And the thread wraps are protected by two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish.

Mojo Cat

This mojo thing feels good, does it not? Might as well share it with another growing legion of serious practitioners, the catfish angler. Hatched, too, for 2016, is St. Croix’s answer for the bank and boat anglers who aren’t impressed with the mishmash of subpar sticks in the stores. Mojo Cat gives whisker-wishers an assortment of technique-specific and purposeful catfish rods engineered with precision features and components.

“We looked at how fast this sport was maturing, and felt the time was right to design and build a new category of premium-performance catfish rods,” said Schluter. “Our goal with the Mojo Cat series was to create the best possible rods for hardcore catfish anglers. In the past, too many of these folks have had to compromise with inferior quality rods, or custom rods built on blanks not even designed for catfish angling.”

The company used premium-quality S-Glass, rather than cheaper, traditional E-Glass. “Our linear S-Glass material has a tremendously positive influence on blank weight and performance,” said Schluter. “Built on blanks with a dynamic blend of premium SCII graphite and 100-percent linear S-Glass, Mojo Cat rods provide exceptional strength and lifting power, plus enhanced sensitivity and tip flex.”

Bolstering strength and enhancing line flow and sensitivity, Mojo Cat rods carry Kigan Master Hand 3D guides with slim, strong aluminum-oxide rings and black frames. All thread wraps are safeguarded with a dual coat of Flex Coat slow-cure finish. Fuji ECS reel seats with black hood clutch casting reels, while Fuji DPS reel seats with black hoods are affixed to Mojo Cat spinning models. Each rod is equipped with a high-grade cork handle and an exclusive Kigan hook-keeper for securing all sizes of catfish hooks.

Seven Mojo Cat models include five casting and two spinning rods. Built specifically for channel, blue and flathead catfish specialists—and ideal for die-hard tournament anglers—these rods are matched to specific line and bait/sinker weight designations. Both 7-foot medium power, fast action casting (MCC70MF) and spinning (MCS70MF) rods are rated for 10- to 25-pound test and ½- to 3-ounces of weight—tailor made for medium-duty channel catfish applications.  The 7-foot 6-inch MCC76HF casting rod perfectly matches drift fishing approaches, including walking bait in rivers. And at 8-feet in length, the extra-heavy power MCC80XHF casting rod is ready to waylay the next world-record, beefy enough to handle 50- to 100-pound test line and up to 32-ounces of weight (or the equivalent of a 1-pound skipjack fillet plus a 16-ounce sinker.) Lastly, for packing small but biting big are a pair of 2-piece, 8-foot medium-power models (MCC80MF2–casting and MCS80MF2–spinning).

Feeling it yet? The mojo? If not, St. Croix has a plan to put you up on that podium, if even in your mind while going mano y mano with fish from the casting deck.

Soon, you’ll be feeling the mojo, too…

FREE Software Update Allows CHIRP Capability on Humminbird® ONIX® Units

FREE Software Update Allows CHIRP Capability on Humminbird® ONIX® Units
Latest version 2.700 software update gives anglers CHIRP 2D SONAR functionality and more!
EUFAULA, AL (March 2, 2016) – Humminbird® is proud to announce Version 2.700 Software, a free download through the Humminbird Select Program that brings ONIX users CHIRP 2D SONAR functionality and more. The free software update allows existing ONIX units and transducers to use CHIRP technology.

With no additional hardware purchase or change in installation, ONIX units are now even more potent, bringing anglers better target separation and greater image clarity.

Humminbird’s free 2.700 software download gives ONIX users unparalleled image clarity and target separation via CHIRP 2D SONAR functionality — no additional hardware or re-rigging required.

“CHIRP is another technology that helps build a more complete picture of what’s going on under your boat,” says Humminbird brand manager, Jeff Kolodzinski. “Used along with Side Imaging™, Down Imaging™, 360 Imaging™, and amazing cartography like Humminbird LakeMaster™ charts, CHIRP is another tool anglers can add to their arsenal to become more formidable at finding and catching fish.”

Used in combination with Humminbird SI, DI and 360, CHIRP completes a suite of awesome fish-finding technologies, giving anglers another tool to interpret fish returns and their exact location relative to the boat.

But the increased capabilities in the software update don’t end with CHIRP. For example, version 2.700 software also brings Depth Contour Labels to the AutoChart™ Live feature that reveal numerical depth data for easier navigation and fishing. Other upgrades include:

  • 2D CHIRP SONAR
  • Added Sonar Auto Detect On/Off options
  • 2D Sonar Digital Depth tracking improvements
  • Depth Contour Labels on AutoChart Live
  • Depth Contour Labels on metric Lakemaster chart data
  • Dynamic labels on Autochart Live colorbar
  • Navionics performance upgrades
  • Increased boat icon and chart performance at low speeds
  • THS NMEA 0183 sentence support
  • “Minimize Clusters” Waypoint Clustering option

The Software Update Process

To begin the update process, users should first verify they have registered their product in the free Humminbird Select Program and have previously updated to the most current software previous to Version 2.700.

Following product registration, users should download the software to their computer. Once successfully downloaded onto your PC, unzip the files on your computer before copying them to a blank 4 GB or greater Class 6 SD card. Do not rename files.

Once the files have been saved to the blank SD card, eject the card from your computer or external card reader and insert into your Humminbird ONIX unit. Please note that during the update process it is critical that you maintain continual power to your unit.

Once the installation is completed, power down the unit and restart to begin using your ONIX with newly-expanded functionality.

SANTEE COOPER SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY FRABILL

SANTEE COOPER SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY FRABILL

[print_link]

MANNING, S.C. (March 1, 2016) – The Costa FLW Series is headed to Santee Cooper March 10-12 for a tournament presented by Frabill when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the second stop of 2016 in the Southeastern Division.

Veteran Santee Cooper guide Lindwood Thornhill of Pineville, S.C., won the 2014 FLW Series event on Santee Cooper with a three-day total of 72 pounds, 4 ounces.“There are a variety of ways to catch fish this time of year on Santee Cooper, and that’s what makes it such a fun fishery,” said Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury, who has two previous top-20 finishes at Santee Cooper in FLW Series competition. “The guy that can find something off the wall all on his own is the guy that usually ends up winning.”

The last time the Costa FLW Series visited Santee Cooper in 2014, local guide Lindwood Thornill of Pineville, South Carolina, fished prespawn bass in a rock bed in the upper part of the canal that connects lakes Marion and Moultrie all alone en route to his first career win, by a 12-pound, 4-ounce margin of victory. Canterbury believes that a similar pattern will play out in this event.

“If someone can find those big prespawn fish and have them all to themselves, they can win the tournament,” Canterbury said. “Local anglers tend to have a little bit of an advantage before the spawn, as they know where the fish are staging and what brush piles they like to get into. Once the fish move shallow, though, the advantage is over. The next two weeks are supposed to be pretty warm, so I think it’ll have those fish shallow and moving.

“I’m going to be throwing a Dirty Jigs Tackle jig and flipping a NetBait Paca Craw,” Canterbury continued. “I know that big spinnerbaits – ¾- to 1-ounce – are real popular with some of the local guys. Rat-L-Traps are always a player there prespawn, and if you’re cranking around trees you want to make sure that your lure has some buoyancy so it’s not constantly getting hung up. I’ll be throwing Bagley Balsa B crankbaits, the B2 and the B3.”

Canterbury estimated that the winning angler would likely weigh a three-day cumulative total of 65 to 70 pounds.

Anglers will take off from the John C. Land III landing, located at 4404 Greenall Road in Summerton, at 7 a.m. EST each day. Weigh-in will be held on Thursday and Friday at the landing beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart, located at 2010 Paxville Highway in Manning, beginning at 4 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. The event is being hosted by the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce.
