Harris wins co-angler title

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 29, 2016) – Byron Kenney of Griffin, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 7 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bulldog Division tournament on Lake Lanier presented by Power-Pole. For his victory, Kenney took home $4,763.

Kenney said he started his day by running south to target bass in ditches that were 8- to 30-feet deep. He said he used a shad-colored Fish Head Spin and was able to get three spotted bass in the boat fairly quickly.

“The fish I caught were mostly from water that I had never been in before,” said Kenney, who earned his third career win in FLW competition. “They just happened to be in the type of structure that I was targeting and it worked out.”

Kenney said he fished the ditches for about an hour, then moved to shallower water and focused on wood and docks using a Citrus Shad-colored Strike King KVD HC Square Bill Silent Crankbait. He said he caught his fourth fish – a 5-pounder – near a lay-down.

“It was so deep in there that I have no idea how I caught it,” said Kenney. “I was very fortunate that I didn’t lose it when I was pulling up.”

The Georgia angler said he then went nearly five hours without a bite before catching his fifth and final keeper at 2:45 p.m. on a custom jig near some rock.

“After the day I had, I didn’t think I would have enough weight to win,” said Kenney. “I was quite surprised when I ended up on top. I guess it was meant to be.”

WRIGHT WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE NORMAN

WRIGHT WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE NORMAN

Foley wins co-angler title

[print_link]

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 29, 2016) – David Wright of Lexington, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 11 ounces, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division tournament of 2016 on Lake Norman. For his victory, Wright took home $5,905.

Wright said he targeted bass along rocky banks in dirty water on the upper-end of the lake to earn his victory.

“I split my day between three shallow areas and used a small crankbait,” said Wright, who earned his 10th career win FLW competition. “The bait was important. It had a tight wiggle which gave a subtle presentation that the bass seemed to like.”

Wright declined to share the specific crankbaits he used, but said he preferred chartreuse in muddy water and olive if he fished in a cove where the water was clearer.

“I fished them slow with a Lew’s reel,” said Wright. “I paid close attention to how fast I was cranking. When I told myself to slow down, I’d get a bite.

“The fish weren’t aggressive at all,” continued Wright. “There were a few that I know bumped up on the bait and didn’t bite.”

Wright said he caught around 15 keepers consistently over the course of the day.

“Normally I bring in all spotted bass, but since the water was muddy I ended up weighing in three largemouth and two spots,” said Wright. “I just kept my head down and stayed persistent.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          David Wright, Lexington, N.C., five bass, 15-11, $5,905

[print_link]

The RowdyTime Lures Ice Buster Open at Shearon Harris was a great success, for our 1st tournament of the  year, with 40 teams showing up in 28 degree morning temps and afternoon temps around 50. It was chilly!! The  winds were light for the most part and the water level was about a foot higher than normal.  Water temps  averaged 47 degrees and the water was a little dingy. Only 25 bass were weighed in, but quite a few more slot
fish were caught that couldn’t be weighed in. Not a bad day for this time of year. The lake water should start  warming up this week and next Saturday’s tournament at Harris should be a good one.

Max Newell and Tyler Faggart weighed in just 4 bass weighing 22.95 lbs to take 1st Place and 1st Place TWT  along with big bass of day (8.64) plus the RowdyTime Lures 1st Place Bonus Package for a total of $3,117!

2nd Place team was Jerry Marshburn and Chuck Byrd with 3 bass weighing 17.34 lbs. They also won 2nd  place
TWT and 2nd place Big Fish (8.31) to take home a total of $1,273. The team of Michael & Chris Hinson took 3rd
Place with 3 weighing 14.51 lbs for $560 in prize money!

Most bass were caught with crankbaits, jerkbaits, RatLTraps and WLS Shakey Heads. Quite a few over slot  bass weighing 5 to 8 pounds were caught which is a good sign that warm water is soon to come!!

I want to thank Raeford Faircloth and Joe Smith with RowdyTime Lures and all the anglers that participated.  Our next tournament will be the 2015 Piedmont Bass Classics $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Qualifier #1,

GUY WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION OPENER ON SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR PRESENTED BY MERCURY

GUY WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION OPENER ON SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR PRESENTED BY MERCURY

[print_link]

JASPER, Texas (Feb. 27, 2016) – Ricky Guy of Humble, Texas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division opener on Sam Rayburn Reservoir presented by Mercury with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 61 pounds, 3 ounces. For his win, Guy earned a prize package worth $95,300, which includes a new Ranger Z518 bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard engine.

“I’m feeling pretty dang good right now,” said Guy, who earned his first career win in FLW Series competition. “I’ve fished a lot of these tournaments, so to finally come out on top is special. The FLW Series is truly one of the toughest tournament circuits in the country.”

Guy said he spent his first day running a red Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap in three mid- to upper-lake areas in Caney Creek and Veach Basin. He said he primarily targeted creek channels near spawning flats.

“I had four keepers in the boat within 20 minutes,” said Guy. “Around 11:30 a.m., I caught an 8-pound, 10-ouncer out of a ditch that had some grass in it. That really got me fired up.”

Guy said it was his technique that proved to be most effective in getting bass to bite the Trap.

“You had to be touching the grass with the bait,” said Guy. “It’s a lot of work to run it in all of that grass, but you had to fight through it. If you weren’t touching it, you weren’t going to catch the big ones.”

Guy said he returned to the same areas on day two, but found them overrun with tournament traffic. Confident in a flipping pattern that he had found in practice, the Texas angler made a run to a small area north of the Highway 147 Bridge known as The Canyons.

“I had a small, productive area where I focused on prespawn bass,” said Guy. “I flipped flooded brush that was mixed with Cypress and Willow trees using a black and blue-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. I also mixed in a Texas-rigged Strike King Rodent of the same color, but the Beaver ended up being far more productive.”

Guy said his day-two catch was anchored by a 10-pounder that he caught in buck brush around 10:30 a.m.

On day three, Guy said he returned to his original areas from day one, but again didn’t find any action on the Rat-L-Trap. He said he decided to go with what was working and made a run back north to The Canyons and flip for prespawn bass using the same Sweet Beaver presentation.

“I decided I was going to live or die by flipping,” said Guy. “It didn’t get me a lot of bites day on day three, but luckily the five I managed to get in the boat were enough to push me to the top.”

University of Lousiana-Monroe Takes A Gamble That Pays Off To Earn College Central Title

University of Lousiana-Monroe Takes A Gamble That Pays Off To Earn College Central Title

[print_link]

HOUMA, La. –– Tyler Stewart and Nick Joiner from the University of Louisiana-Monroe led wire-to-wire to take the title at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on the Atchafalaya Basin with a three-day total of 42 pounds even.

On Championship Saturday, the duo put 14 pounds, 14 ounces in the boat to officially pull away from the field. They entered the final frame with just over a 4-pound cushion, and with the help of the second biggest limit of the tournament, Stewart and Joiner bested the competition by an 8-pound, 11-ounce margin.

Having faith that quality fish were in their area proved to be crucial as they caught six fish on Saturday and grinded out one cull the entire day to push through for the title. They kept a weightless wacky rigged Gary Yamamoto 5-inch Senko in their hands all day, and slowly, but surely, added necessary bass to their bag. The confidence they had in their technique and in their area stemmed from numerous days of practice before the tournament ever got started.

“We went south on our first practice day, and we probably caught 40 to 50 fish,” Stewart said. “None of those fish were bigger than two pounds, but we figured we could at least scratch out eight to 10 pounds a day and give ourselves a shot. On our second practice day, we decided to explore the north end of the basin around Lake Verret.”

On that second practice day, they proceeded to catch several 4-pound bass, and they were completely sold on sticking to that area and expanding on their few spots each day.

The entire college field dealt with an influx of rain and a cold front that passed through this week, but that didn’t hurt Stewart and Joiner because they could slow down knowing what lived in their areas.

After the teammates started the tournament off with a bang, catching 17 pounds, 9 ounces on Day 1, they managed their areas and sustained their lead after catching 9 pounds, 9 ounces on Day 2.

On the final day, they could pressure their spots and catch as many fish as needed. But, the duo didn’t start on their normal spot. Instead, Stewart and Joiner took a gamble and fished an area they hadn’t fished in the tournament.

“We didn’t want to start on that spot today because we knew this other canal had some good quality fish,” Joiner said. “We knew could always lay-up at our other spot if we needed to catch a limit, and that’s actually what we did today.”

Stewart and Joiner started Saturday strong as they boated a 4-pounder within 15 minutes after arriving. Then they proceeded to catch a 3-pounder and two bass around 2 pounds.

With four fish in the livewell at 10:30 a.m., they ran to their normal area and caught a quick keeper to fill their limit. They later added 2 pounds to their weight with a significant cull after moving back to their canal.

Gunner Durrett and Austin Watkins of Louisiana Tech tried their best to catch ULM, but after boating 11 pounds on the final day, they came up short. With a three-day total of 33 pounds, 5 ounces, Durrett and Watkins relied on flipping patches of reeds in the 70-mile area of the Atchafalaya Basin.

They didn’t have any problems boating fish this week, but after Day 1 quality fish seemed to funnel to the numerous areas they targeted. They weighed only 9 pounds on Thursday, but backed it up with 13 pounds, 5 ounces including the Carhartt Big Bass of the tournament that weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces.

Primarily, the Louisiana Tech team flipped a Strike King Space Monkeys in black-and-blue and a Ballistic Blue Missile D Bomb rigged it on a 3/8-ounce weight.

“The deeper the reeds we fished, the better quality showed up it seemed,” Durrett said. “I think that’s why the heavier weight excelled for us compared to the lighter sizes.”

Matthew Leblanc and Matthew Benoits of the host school, Nicholls State, finished in third with a three-day total of 31 pounds, 11 ounces. They relied on moving baits like a spinnerbait to put an early limit in the boat in the first 15 minutes every day of the tournament.

“We knew consistency was going to be big,” Benoits said. “Knowing where the deeper water was helped out enormously because when it got cold, those fish wanted to funnel as deep as they could.”

The Top 13 teams earned a berth into the 2016 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship on a body of water to be named later.

Along with the win, Stewart and Joiner of ULM took home the Livingston Lures Leader award as well as the Nitro Big Bag of the tournament for their 17-9 effort on Day 1.

Stewart And Joiner Maintain Lead Heading Into Final Day Of College Central

[print_link]

HOUMA, La. — Tyler Stewart and Nick Joiner from the University of Louisiana-Monroe managed a solid five-bass limit during Friday’s second round of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on the Atchafalaya Basin.

After wrangling 17 pounds, 9 ounces on Day 1, Stewart and Joiner added 9-9 Friday — and with a two-day total of 27-2, they will carry a 4-pound, 1-ounce advantage into Championship Saturday.

Although they didn’t boast a big bag Friday, the teammates from ULM said they didn’t explore all of their spots and are hoping that fish management will pay off Saturday.

“We did save some areas that we found in practice,” Stewart said. “We don’t know if they will be big-fish areas, but we are probably going to start on one of them tomorrow. In 15 minutes during practice, we had about 10 pounds in there. So with more time, we may be able to catch more than that.”

Stewart and Joiner seemingly boated bass on whatever baits they threw Friday. But after filling their limit, they stuck with a couple of key lures hoping to catch more of the big bass they caught in practice.

They know how crucial a 4-pounder can be in this event, especially on the final day — and they have a specific plan in place to boat that kind of kicker bass Saturday.

“We are hopefully going to start with our key baits and get our quick limit, and then we will go head hunting,” Joiner said. “Hopefully, we can get one of those 4-pounders and improve our bag.”

The Warhawk teammates will need to stay focused, with the rest of the top five also from Louisiana. Marcus Kliebert and Francis Robichaux from nearby Nicholls State University caught four bass that weighed 12-5 Friday and jumped from sixth to second, just 4-1 back of the leaders.

The Nicholls State duo sported a solid bag of 10-12 on Day 1 and upgraded even more on Day 2. The one asterisk on their tournament so far is the fact they only brought four fish to the scales Friday. That could possibly hurt their chances if things are tight down the stretch.

“We had some missed opportunities today, as we lost a 3-pounder at the boat,” Robichaux said. “We are just going to focus on every bite that we get and making sure we get those in the boat, and we will see how it plays out tomorrow.”

Having that 3-pound fish would’ve put Robichaux and Kliebert right behind Stewart and Joiner with a considerably smaller margin to make up.

This tournament has featured a local flavor the entire week, as 11 of the Top 20 teams fishing Saturday are from Louisiana. Six are from the host school Nicholls State.

Matthew Leblanc and Matthew Benoits from Nicholls State are in third with 22-10, and Gunner Durrett and Austin Watkins from Louisiana Tech are in fourth with 22-5. The Nicholls State team of John Authement and Cameron Naquin is fifth with 21-3.

Stewart and Joiner also earned the Livingston Lures leader award of $250 of Livingston product for leading the second day.

The Top 20 teams will advance to Saturday’s final round, and the Top 13 teams will clinch a berth into the 2016 Carhartt College Series National Championship, which will be held at a site to be announced later this year. There is roughly a 2-pound margin separating 13th and 20th place.

Saturday’s take-off will begin at 6:30 a.m. CT from Bayou Black Marina in Gibson, with the weigh-in set for  3:30 p.m. on the campus of Nicholls State’s in Thibodaux, La.

And for those looking to transport a good chunk of it in a single bag, Plano’s new A-Series Tackle Duffel is just what the traveling angler or gear junkie ordered – a right-sized package offering maximum capacity and utility, all wrapped up with top-quality components, durable construction and handsome aesthetics. Add it all up and you’ve got a traveling tackle companion that’s true to the Plano name.

Our venerable 3600 StowAway Utility Box lies at the heart of the new A-Series Duffel’s tackle toting capability. It’s designed to house 14 of them: 10 inside its cavernous main compartment and another four in its secondary front compartment. Or, remove a few 3600s and you’ll create capacity for additional gear, from rainwear and reels to fish-grippers and fillet knives.

Aside from its workmanlike primary and secondary zippered compartments, the A-Series Tackle Duffel serves up added gear garaging with four more zippered, exterior pockets – two on each end – perfect for protecting smaller items like sunglasses, keys, portable electronics or soft plastics.

A tackle duffel should be versatile, and the A-Series Tackle Duffel’s authentic brand of Plano utility comes not only from its hungry capacity, but also from the numerous ways it can be carried. Traditional handles arch up from the front and back of the duffel for short-haul situations and a requisite padded shoulder strap is perfect for long-distance carrying. Two additional sets of reinforced handles make the A-Series Tackle Duffel easy to manage in other transport situations.

Need a handhold to drag the bag out of the back of a pickup bed or the belly pan of a floatplane? There’s a handle on either end, right where you need it. Want to buddy-carry the bag or pass it to another person from a boat or dock?  We thought of that, too, and placed handles on top of both ends the duffel. 63 years in the business has taught us a few things about what makes a great and useful tackle bag.

Continuous innovation often means adapting ideas and technology from other industries. Take the MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) webbing borrowed from the tactical industry that adorns the front of the A-Series Duffel. It provides a sturdy and functional means of attaching additional gear or accessories to the bag’s exterior, which means added value and utility for the user.
