JB Custom Rods releases the “JC Pro Angler Rid Series” for 2016

Dunn, NC – Elite Custom Rod Builder JB Custom Rods announces the production of the “JC ProAngler Series” for 2016, built to the specifications of Under Armour and Strike King Pro Jamey Caldwell. The former Army Special Operations member has long known the importance of equipment in performing his craft, and he now has the chance to refine the rod line he has come to trust in his quest to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series.

“The big story behind these rods is the blank JB is using” says Caldwell, “its high strain, multi-modulus Japanese graphite that allows us to custom make the strength, flexibility and action to match technique to design. In doing so, most of the rods will have a primary technique associated with it, but have also been designed with several alternate techniques in mind.”

The JC Pro Angler Series Rods will feature the spiral guide design JB Custom rods are known for, which eliminate line slap, less rod torque and increased casting distance with all line types.

Caldwell says that this rod will be all about the blank however, and that it is the most advanced graphite blank he’s ever fished. “It’s a high strain graphite fired at a very high temperature, which in turn gives you a rod that is lighter with stronger graphite that’s more responsive – it will go from its load position back to neutral faster. Lighter and stronger- what every fisherman wants”.

The 18 rod series (16 baitcasters and two spinning rods) is due to be released in January of 2016, and cover techniques from drop-shotting to heavy mat punching. Anglers can get their hands on any rod in the series starting at the Raleigh Bass and Saltwater Fishing expo in January (7-9), and sales will continue at the Richmond and East Tennessee Fishing shows. The JC ProAngler Series will then be available for purchase online at www.custombassrods.com.

Martens Earns Classic Bid With Final-Day Catch Of 28-14 On Lake Guntersville

Thomas Martens of Lago Vista, Texas, caught a total of 28 pounds, 14 ounces Saturday to win the Team Championship Classic fish-off on Lake Guntersville. Martens earns a spot in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees out of Tulsa, Okla., March 4-6.

Martens Earns Classic Bid With Final-Day Catch Of 28-14 On Lake Guntersville

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Things didn’t go exactly as Thomas Martens had hoped during Saturday’s six-man Bassmaster Classic fish-off on Lake Guntersville.

The current he had relied on all week disappeared, and that may have caused him to lose a couple of good fish Saturday morning. He also had to share his best spot with the crowd of recreational fishermen who always flock to Guntersville on the weekends.

But none of it was enough to keep Martens from his biggest accomplishment as a tournament angler.

Martens caught just two fish that weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces during the morning session of the fish-off. But he rebounded with four giants that weighed 22-12 during the afternoon session and claimed the individual title with a combined weight of 28-14.

The victory earned Martens a berth in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, which is scheduled for March 4-6 on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

“We found a bridge in practice that was really good, along with about 20 other boats,” said Martens, who qualified for the fish-off by teaming with fellow Texan Dean Alexander to finish second in the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship earlier this week. “We had to wait in line to get to it during the week, but it was worth it. Then today, there were a lot of crappie anglers there, and I had to go inside of them. But they were great about it.”

Martens used a 7-inch Basstrixx Swimbait in the ayu color pattern to catch the fish he needed to slip past Nickolas LeBrun who finished second with 23-13. That swimbait was the same one used by California pro Skeet Reese to win the Bassmaster Elite Series event held on Guntersville back in April.

“There was no current today, and I had a couple of pull-offs that could have helped,” Martens said. “You could see the fish down there (on an electronic fish finder), and it was just a matter of dropping the bait down to them and waiting for a bite. I was literally getting about one bite an hour.

“I lost another fish this afternoon, and I was afraid that fish was going to be the one that really hurt me.”

The original plan for this week’s Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship was for 197 teams to compete Wednesday and Thursday for the national team title, with anglers from the Top 3 teams advancing to fish solo in the Bassmaster Classic fish-off Friday and Saturday.

But after a solid day of fishing in Wednesday’s opening round, the weather threw a kink into everyone’s plans.

Thursday’s second round of the team portion was wiped out by heavy fog in the Guntersville area. That forced the anglers to complete the team competition on Friday. Michigan anglers Chris Risner and Timothy Eaton claimed that team title with a two-day weight of 48-7, ahead of Alexander and Martens (46-10) and LeBrun and Randy Deaver (45-4).

Then instead of fishing the originally scheduled two days for the Classic fish-off, the six remaining anglers fished one day with two four-hour sessions. All anglers were attempting to catch five bass during the morning session and five more during the afternoon.

Saturday’s morning session saw LeBrun jump into the lead with four bass that weighed 12 pounds, 14 ounces. His closest competition was from Risner, who brought three bass to the scales that weighed 10-4.

After a short break, the anglers went back onto the lake at 11 a.m. for the afternoon session. While Martens was working his magic at the bridge, LeBrun was flipping and pitching grass for a modest five-bass limit that weighed 10-15.

“With a lack of current on our main spot, I kind of just went into survival mode,” LeBrun said. “I figured my best chance was to get five fish of some sort and just let the cards fall. So I went and did something that I had confidence in, something I know how to do. That’s how I caught what I caught.

“When it’s your day, it’s your day, and it was (Martens’) day today.”

Risner finished third with six fish in the two sessions that weighed 18-2. He was followed by Alexander with 5-7, Deaver with 4-9 and Eaton with 0-0.

Martens said he’s never seen Grand Lake, but he’s looking forward to doing some research on the fishery before he takes on the challenge of fishing the Classic.

“I’ve never even fished in Oklahoma before,” Martens said. “But how much different from Texas can it be? It’ll be a great experienced for sure.”

Michigan Anglers Claim Team Title At Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Everything went right for Chris Risner and Timothy Eaton during Friday’s second round of the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship on Lake Guntersville.

Even some things they never could have imagined.

The Michigan anglers, who qualified for the event through their home state’s D&R Sports Center Tournament Trail, caught five bass that weighed 24 pounds, 13 ounces and claimed the national team championship with a two-day weight of 48-7. Two of their best fish came around mid-morning on one magical cast.

“Chris had just finished telling me that he needed me to catch an 8-pounder,” Eaton said. “Then on the very next cast, I got a bite and set the hook. I couldn’t believe it. It was 8 pounds of fish, but it was two of them on the same bait — a 5-pounder and a 3-pounder.

“That’s when we started to feel like maybe it was just meant to be. This is our biggest dream come true.”

Risner and Eaton finished just ahead of the Texas team of Dean Alexander and Thomas Martens (46-10) and the Louisiana pairing of Nickolas LeBrun and Randy Deaver (45-4).

Now the six anglers from the Top 3 teams will compete individually against one another on Saturday in a fish-off. The winner will earn a bid to the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, March 4-6.

Risner and Eaton said they might have been aided by the heavy fog that forced the postponement of the second round Thursday. During the fog delay, they sat at the dock worrying they might not be able to put together a good limit if the anglers were sent out to fish a shortened day.

“I truly think that it helped us, because I don’t think the conditions were right for how we wanted to fish,” Risner said. “We sat there and talked about it, and we felt like if we only had four hours to fish, we didn’t know if we could get it done.

“It was taking us the full day to get a big bag. That’s what it took us today, and we were fortunate to have it.”

Excitement and nervousness was obvious for both anglers during Friday’s award ceremony. Risner even complained of his hands cramping because he had gripped his winner’s trophy so tight.

During Saturday’s Classic fish-off, they said they’ll share the spots they’ve fished as a team all week and fish without pressure.

“This is what we came here for,” said Eaton, gesturing to the trophy he was awarded for the team title. “Anything else that happens from this point on is just extra. If one of us is going to win, I’d honestly rather it be Chris.”

The format will change radically now as the tournament shifts to an individual competition. Three anglers will fish in their own boats, while their team members move to Nitro Boats provided by B.A.S.S.

The Classic fish-off was originally slated for Friday and Saturday. But since Thursday’s round of team competition was wiped out by fog, the fish-off has been shortened to one day with two separate sessions.

The six anglers will leave Lake Guntersville State Park at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and return to the park for the day’s first weigh-in at 10:30 a.m. Then as soon as the morning weigh-in is completed, they will go back onto the lake for a second four-hour session.

They’ll be allowed five fish for each session, and the angler with the highest total weight at the end of the day will earn a Classic berth.

“Several things played into the decision to do it this way, including the threat of severe weather Sunday,” said Jon Stewart, tournament director of the Team Championship. “Instead of stretching it to Sunday and fishing two more days, we’re basically going to have two tournaments on one day.”

Unlike the Team Championship where landing nets were allowed, anglers will be forced to hand-land their bass in the fish-off — just as anglers on the Bassmaster Elite Series do all season.

Team members will be forced to decide among themselves Friday night who will start where and how all of their best spots from the week will be divided.

“We’ll discuss it tonight, and however it works out is however it works out,” said LeBrun on the subject of fishing against Deaver, his Louisiana teammate and friend. “At the end of the day, we’re still going to be best friends — and that’s all that matters.”

Lund Pro-V Bass boat reveals innovative engineering and remarkable performance

The Bass Boat Re-Imagined

Lund Pro-V Bass boat reveals innovative engineering and remarkable performance

New York Mills, MN (December 11, 2015) – Eclipsing tournament wins by Lund luminaries Al and James Lindner and Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson, the legendary boat builder recently unveiled a radical new 1875 Pro-V Bass boat during its August dealer meeting – a progressive boat blueprint that sets out to redefine the concept of the modern day bass and musky fishing vessel.

Designed and destined to tame waves from Lake Erie all the way to Florida’s Okeechobee, the Pro-V Bass reflects far-reaching research, development and pro-angler input. Infused with exceptional engineering, the original Pro-V Bass is built on Lund’s benchmark IPS2 aluminum hull. This superior framework features a flat center pad, multiple lift strakes and two reverse chines. The result is lightning quick hole-shot and a fast, stable, drier ride.

“Wow, this boat’s incredible,” exclaimed Gussy, still buzzing from his initial test ride. “I can’t believe how fast it gets up on plane—like a rifleshot. Tons of extras, too—this rig’s full of surprises. This boat is just an awesome fishable platform perfect for bass or musky.”

When the adrenaline of the ride finally mellowed, Gussy got down to brass tacks. “Lund has engineered an amazingly fishable, functional bass boat combined with the best aluminum V-hull in the industry. This is the perfect rig bass or musky anglers have been waiting for—perfect for comfortably running small water, skinny water or big waves, Sam Rayburn to the Great Lakes.”

“Both bass and musky anglers are going to embrace this boat.”

Musky in particular, is a species near and dear to James Lindner, who not surprisingly, also happens to be one of the best bass anglers in the north. “What’s remarkable about the Pro-V Bass is its incredible responsiveness and short recovery time in waves. The ride of this boat is so smooth and stable—especially in big water—that it will literally be an incredible new experience for bass anglers more accustomed to fiberglass.”

Rated for up to a 200-HP outboard, the 1875 Pro-V Bass is quick to plane and has impressive top end speed.  With a lighter load, the 200-HP Optimax easily hit speeds in excess of 60-mph, yet travels over rough seas with a remarkably soft ride. “I don’t know how guys fishing big fiberglass bass boats can do it,” adds Lindner. “Spearing big waves when the water’s cold isn’t much fun. It’s a huge reason I love the IPS2 hull; not sure it’s even possible to spear a wave with this light, speedy hull. Staying dry and safe is always a good thing, regardless of season, and this boat makes sure you do.”

This boat comes in two distinct seating configurations—the classic bench-seating or the multi-species pedestal seating version—giving anglers versatile fishing platforms, based on personal preference. The bench-seating version includes recessed bench-seating and also features a patent pending extraordinary gas-assist tackle storage that literally rises vertically out of the back deck for unprecedented tackle access.

Similar in fishability and function, the pedestal seating layout includes two swivel cockpit seats plus two additional “jump” seats, which flip up and instantly fold back down into the rear casting deck, providing ample seating for up to four anglers.

Each boat has an in-deck 3-tier center rod locker, with individual tubes for five 9-foot rods, five rods up to 8’ 8” and five more to 8’ 4”. A built-in bump stick mount lies just to the left of the rod locker for taking snap measurements. Meanwhile, on the deck, four stowing rubberized rod tie-downs keep critical combos within easy reach.

Tackle and gear storage is immense and intelligently engineered. The massive bow casting deck has four cavernous storage compartments, each built with Lund’s new patent pending Advanced Water Control deck system. Storage hatches are fully sealed, while any excess water is channeled down and away from the compartment itself, so tackle and gear stays drier. As noted, the bench seat version also includes a patent pending shock-assist pop-up tackle compartment under the rear casting deck, which accommodates nine additional 3700 size boxes. Sixteen more 3700s fit snuggly beneath the bench seat.

A longtime leader in livewell design, Lund has amped up its patented Prolong System with a 28-gallon, 36-inch livewell. “Everyone knows Lund’s livewells are the best in the industry,” said Lindner. “In tournaments, my bass are always kicking at the weigh-in. And the Pro-V Bass has even added a pump-out feature, so I can empty and refill the ‘well with fresh water whenever necessary.”

Further to fishing features, the Pro-V Bass is available in a 24- or 36-volt battery configuration. A removable port console adds precious interior real estate, while a rear ski-pylon offers versatility for family watersport use. On the bow, a recessed, in-floor trolling motor foot-pedal slot allows for direct wiring or connection via plug-in. Recessed sonar mounts accommodate giant 12-inch screens, both on the bow and in the console.

“Seems like everyone’s asking about it,” adds Gussy.  “All I can say is, Lund’s done it again—made a true bass and musky fishing machine that will also allow me to guide walleyes on Lake of the Woods . . . on my days off from the tournament trail, that is.”

Maxed in quality, features and performance, the 1875 Pro-V Bass is set out to redefine the bass and musky fishing boat world.  For more information on the new 1875 Pro-V Bass, or to shop Lund’s full selection of fishing boats, visit lundboats.com.

Tyler Courtney Of Texas Wins Fantasy Fishing Grand Prize

Tyler Courtney Of Texas Wins Fantasy Fishing Grand Prize

[print_link]
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Tyler Courtney of Lubbock, Texas, will be upgrading his 1998 Triton for a 2016 version after winning the grand prize in Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing presented by Toyota, a fantasy game that follows the Bassmaster Classic and the Bassmaster Elite Series.

Before each tournament begins, fans predict the best angler in each of five groups, or “buckets,” and are awarded with points based on the angler’s finish. Big prizes are awarded to the top player for each event and to the best overall player of the season.

“I still really can’t believe it,” said Courtney, who took first place overall by the eighth tournament of the 10-event season.

“I thought it was great but that I probably would end up making some bonehead move.”

Courtney lost the lead in the ninth event but gained it back when it counted. He beat more than 30,000 other players of Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing and won a Triton 189TrX boat with a Yamaha VF150LA motor, a single-axle trailer, MotorGuide trolling motor and a Lowrance Mark 5X. His prize package is valued at $37,793.

Courtney had never even played Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing until this year.

“This is my first season,” said Courtney. “My buddies invited me and we started our own group. We didn’t even put any money in it; it was all just for bragging rights.”

He definitely earned bragging rights. When the season was drawing to a close and Courtney was hovering around the top of the leaderboard for the last few weeks, his friends were constantly texting him.

“I started getting nervous those last few weeks, and I asked my buddies to help me so I wouldn’t mess up,” said Courtney. “But they wouldn’t help! They said I just needed to keep doing what I was doing.

“I did, and I guess it worked out!”

Courtney, 28, stays busy with his sales job, but he did give his Fantasy Fishing picks some time during the season.

“I would spend 15 or 20 minutes on the Monday before a Bassmaster Elite Series event, looking up each angler’s past results on a lake,” said Courtney. “When I got to the lower buckets, I would choose an angler who lived close to the lake, hoping he would have some experience there.”

Courtney also picked Aaron Martens often, which was a win for any Fantasy Fishing player. Martens, who won the 2015 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year award, was the best angler to pick in his bucket several times throughout the year.

The Wednesday night before each Elite Series event, Courtney would go back over his picks to be sure he didn’t want to make any changes.

“I certainly didn’t have any elaborate planning method,” Courtney said, “but I was consistent.”

Courtney wasn’t the only winner. He may have won the season, but 10 other players won individual events. The prize for those was a $2,500 gift card to Bass Pro Shops, and each winner who was also a member of B.A.S.S. won an additional $500 gift card to Bass Pro Shops.

Winners were Austin Crank, Oklahoma; Mark Trodden, Virginia; Josh Edwards, Georgia, Steven Bow, California; Cristy Collier, Oklahoma; Justin Earps, Tennessee; Kenneth Bulin, North Carolina; Dylan Adams, Arkansas; Mike Whitley, West Virginia; and Christopher Pike, Virginia.

Playing Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing is free. The season for 2015 is complete, but play will resume in early 2016 to kick off the Classic and the Bassmaster Elite Series season.

Old Town’s ‘Shallow Minded’ Fishing Reach difficult-to-reach waters, find untapped fish

Must-See Video: Old Town’s ‘Shallow Minded’ Fishing

Reach difficult-to-reach waters, find untapped fish

OLD TOWN, ME (December 10, 2015) – We anglers like to dream of far-off, bucket-list fishing destinations: permit and bones in Belize, the big bull reds of Louisiana’s coastal marshes, Grand Bahamas flats, Patagonia’s browns

But there’s awesome fishing closer than you might think. Look out your back door and chances are there are virtually untapped fish to be caught. All you have to do is push farther away from the bedlam of boat launches and community holes.

In a word: explore. Make adventure part of your fishing. Get intimate with the waters where you live, whether rural or urban.

The perfect vehicle? Fishing machines like the Old Town Predator 13, Predator MX, or Predator XL Minn Kota

Need proof? Watch Old Town’s David Hadden and Steve Stracqualursi from 12wt. portage their Predators through woods, and silently slip into the riffles and runs of Maine’s Kennebec River. A gorgeous paddle far from the madding crowd, and they’re seemingly light-years from any other angler, like stepping back in time.

See, it’s not just about fishing, it’s also about getting there. And no watercraft makes it so easy and fun. Speaking of the journey, now anglers can access even more hard-to-reach fish-holding waters across the globe … Old Town’s Predator XL Minn Kota brings power to the equation, bridging the gap between fishing kayaks, bass boats and shallow water skiffs.

This Ultimate Fishing Machine allows complete hands-free navigation and trolling via a full 45lbs of thrust with variable speed control and Minn Kota’s Digital Maximizer technology for full-day motoring. A true industry first, now anglers can get to fish-filled waters easier, faster and have more control once they get there. Not to mention silently motoring back to base camp when your arms and shoulders are sore from hours of epic fishing!

Fog Nixes Second Round Of Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship

Fog Nixes Second Round Of Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Dense fog and low visibility brought things to a standstill Thursday for the 394 anglers who were hoping to compete in the second round of the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship on Lake Guntersville.

Jon Stewart, tournament director for the Team Championship, postponed Thursday’s round when the teams were still sitting at the launch site at 10:30 a.m. waiting out a fog delay more than four hours after the scheduled takeoff time.

B.A.S.S. rules call for competition days to be postponed if the anglers can’t fish at least four hours of a scheduled eight-hour day. Thursday’s weigh-in was scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

“I knew that if it was foggy, it was going to be bad,” Stewart said after announcing the postponement. “It was foggy when we were setting up on Tuesday, and it didn’t lift until after 10:30. I told the anglers at the briefing Tuesday that if it got foggy at all, it would probably be tough.”

The schedule will now be adjusted as such:

Weather permitting, the tournament will resume Friday with a full field of 197 boats leaving Lake Guntersville State Park at 6:30 a.m. and returning for the weigh-in back at the park at 2:30 p.m. The leaders after Friday’s weigh-in will be crowned national team champions.

Then the six anglers from the Top 3 teams are scheduled to compete individually against one another in the Bassmaster Team Championship Classic Fish-off. The winner of the individual competition will earn a bid to the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, March 4-6.

That event was scheduled for two days, but the schedule is now on hold.

“Since there will only be six anglers taking part in the fish-off, I’ll have a discussion with them,” Stewart said. “If they can all stay an extra day, the fish-off will be two days — Saturday and Sunday. If one of them isn’t able to stay, then we’ll finish up with a one-day fish-off on Saturday.”

Friday’s forecast for the Guntersville area from Weather Underground calls for overcast skies around takeoff time, with a 30 percent chance of rain for most of the day. Conditions are expected to be clear to partly cloudy Saturday, but severe storms are possible across the northern half of Alabama on Sunday.

“They’re calling for some rain here, which actually should help the fog Friday morning,” Stewart said. “It does look better for tomorrow. We’ll be watching it closely.”

Alabama anglers Billy Sharp and Kevin Stubblefield took the lead in the team competition Wednesday with five bass that weighed 27 pounds, 6 ounces. The Guntersville husband-and-wife team of Kent and Shannon Ware is in second with 26-9.
