BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2015) – Kyle Weisenburger of Ottawa, Ohio, weighed four bass totaling 6 pounds, 5 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Buckeye Division Super Tournament on Indian Lake with a two-day total of eight bass weighing 12 pounds, 11 ounces. For his victory, Weisenburger earned $3,971.
“I started off the tournament by targeting channels and pockets, especially ones where there were baitfish crammed into the backs,” said Weisenburger of his third win in FLW competition. “I used a black spinnerbait and also flipped  the grass with a green-pumpkin-colored Bass Shack Baits Boss Hog.”
Weisenburger said he was able to catch one fish before a storm moved through the area and then three more after it passed.
On Sunday I focused on the pocket where I had caught my final three fish the day before,” said Weisenburger. “The wind had repositioned the grass so I needed to adjust my approach a bit. I found out how the baitfish were relating to the grass and brought in my first fish at 9 a.m. – a 3-pound kicker.”
After boating a couple of more keepers, Weisenburger said he casted a buzzbait to a grass edge and caught his final keeper around 2 p.m. before heading in to the scale.

NORTH EAST, Md. (Sept. 21, 2015) – Jamie Hartman of Newport, New York, weighed four bass totaling 9 pounds, 10 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Northeast Division Super Tournament on Chesapeake Bay with a two-day total of nine bass weighing 30 pounds, 5 ounces. For his victory, Hartman earned $5,004.
“I decided to target a series of docks and wood in the northeast arm,” said Hartman, who earned his seventh career BFL win. “I rotated through spots and it ended up coming together.”
Hartman said he used a Tidal Blue-colored Riot Baits Instigator Jig with a green-pumpkin Riot Baits “R” Craw, a Strike King KVD Square Bill Crankbait and a finesse worm to catch his fish.
“When choosing a bait, it depended on how much water was around the dock,” said Hartman. “If it was deep I used the jig. If it was shallow, I reached for the crankbait and the finesse worm. I caught about 15 fish throughout the day on Saturday.”
Hartman said the bite was much more difficult on Sunday due to a strong north wind blowing tidal water out from his area.
“I could only hit half of the wood and docks that I did on Saturday because it was so shallow,” said Hartman. “Luckily, I was using a Cashion rod that was unbelievably sensitive. There were barely any fight to these fish and the rod really helped me yank them in.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Jamie Hartman, Newport, N.Y., nine bass, 30-5, $5,004

EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE ON RED RIVER
[print_link]
NATCHITOCHES, La. (Sept. 19, 2015) – The East Central University team of Wyatt Smith of Depew, Oklahoma, and Trevor Yates of Norman, Oklahoma, won the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference event on the Red River Saturday with five bass weighing 16 pounds even. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Championship tournament.
“This win is a major step forward for our club,” said Smith, a junior majoring in Environmental Health and Safety. “It’s going to give us more notoriety and hopefully help attract more anglers to the program.”
“We had a pretty tough practice,” said Yates, a freshman majoring in Business Marketing. “But, we were able to find an area in Pool No. 4 that we were confident in so we decided to hit it during the tournament.”
“For a while we were the only ones dissecting the area,” said Smith. “I caught a decent keeper on a green-pumpkin Gene Larew Biffle Bug around 9:30 a.m. We couldn’t figure out any patterns, so we junk-fished around wood just trying to find more bites.”
Smith said the duo’s primary baits were a black Spro Frog and a black and blue V&M Jig with a craw trailer.
“I think we won because we fished slower,” said Yates. “We knew the fish were going to be finicky because of the cold front that came in last weekend. We also chose to throw a frog in the muddy water, which is unconventional.”
The top 15 teams that advanced to the Southern Conference Championship tournament on Grand Lake are:

The Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Qualifier #5 at Falls Lake gave  notice to the 29 teams fishing that fall is going to be tough. One team, however, didn’t pay any attention to the  notice! The rain was predicted but never came to the ramp. I heard Upper Barton got some but that was about  it. The winds were 5 to 10, the air temps ranged from 70to 83 and the water level was down about 2 feet. Surface  water temps averaged 81 warm degrees! It stayed overcast just about all day and that messed up some plans
for the deep water guys. The winning team found their fish earlier in the week, but it took a lot of patience and hard work to get them to bite today! But they finally did!

Dan Glosson & Scottie Morris surpassed the field catching 5 bass weighing 27.99 lbs to take 1st Place, 1st
Place TWT and 1st Place Big Fish (7.06 lbs.) for a total of $1,771!
2nd Place team was K.C. Choosukal & Tim Penhollow with 5 bass weighing 17.06 lbs. They also won
2nd place TWT to take home a total of $725. The 3rd Place Team of William Small & Lee Williams
netted 5 bass weighing 16.89 lbs. which included the 2nd place big fish (6.66 lbs.) netting them a total of $534.

81 bass were brought to the scales for a total of 223 pounds averaging 2.75 lbs. each. Most were caught on
plastic worm combos in 10 to 15 feet of water. Fall fishing is pretty tough! This was our last event at Falls Lake
this year and I’m here to tell you that Falls really put out some good bass this year! What a great lake!!

I want to thank Cashion Fishing Rods and all the anglers that participated. Our next tournament will be the

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. — Capping off the most dominant season in Bassmaster history, Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., was finally awarded the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) trophy Friday.

Martens locked down the AOY title in late August during the final day of competition at the Plano Bassmaster Elite at Lake St. Clair, but it wasn’t etched into stone until Friday when he hoisted the trophy over his head with his family standing at his side.

“He’s had such an amazing year, and we’re very proud of him,” said Martens’ wife, Lesley. “I know what this sport means to him, and I think it’s safe to say a third AOY title completely erases his 13 second-place finishes.”

“It’s surreal to stand here and think about my season,” the three-time AOY winner said. “Taking home two wins and the Angler of the Year title is so satisfying, but it’s hard to put this feeling into words right now. You really can’t hope for more than that; it’s very humbling to compete against the best in the world and win.”

Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., maintains the lead in weight for the second consecutive day of the championship on Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Friday, he brought in a limit of smallmouth bass for 18 pounds, 5 ounces for a two-day total of 39-12. He is holding steady in seventh place in AOY points.

The stories transpiring during the 2015 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship don’t stop with Martens and Hackney. Several anglers pining for a 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic berth are impacting the AOY points in a big way.

Todd Faircloth had another impressive day, bumping his two-day total to 33 pounds, 12 ounces by weighing 15-7 on Friday. He is currently sitting in 29th place in AOY standings, which is just inside the Classic qualification bubble. He has one more day to make the Classic berth official.

“I feel that if I can catch a limit of smallmouth on Sunday I will qualify for the Classic,” said Faircloth, who is in fourth place (by weight) after two days. “Smallmouth bass have burned me before, but they’re working for me lately and it’s been fun.

“I’ve been catching all my fish from 15 to 25 feet of water on a drop shot, which is similar to the pattern I used on Lake St. Clair,” he said, referring to the tournament he recently won.

Michael Iaconelli of Pittsgrove, N.J., came into the championship on the bubble of earning a 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic qualification. He had a dramatic Thursday morning by losing three hours of fishing time due to gear-related complications. He rebounded, however, and weighed enough fish to put him in a strong position to earn a Classic berth on Sunday.

“I arrived at my spot on time this morning, and I caught my two biggest fish right away,” Iaconelli explained. “After I had a limit in the livewell, I felt so much better. I was able to expand my area and better understand it.”

Iaconelli knows he hasn’t made the cut yet, but he feels that weighing 15 pounds of bass on Sunday will put him high enough in the tournament standings to provide enough points to compete at the Classic next March on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., and Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., are holding down 40th and 41st place respectively, and the two anglers are separated by a single point. With 40th place being the current Bassmaster Classic cutoff, both anglers — among others — have only Sunday to catch the right fish in order to earn a 2016 Classic berth.

Typically Bassmaster Elite Series events cover a four-day span, which includes a Top 50 cut for Saturday and a Top 12 cut on Sunday. This event, however, will keep the full 50-angler field all three days of competition, and fishing will take a one-day hiatus on Saturday as the pros participate in Bassmaster University.

Competition will resume Sunday morning out of CenterPointe Marina at 6:30 a.m. CT. The final weigh-in will be held at the same location beginning at 3:15 p.m.

On Saturday, all 50 anglers will participate in Bassmaster University, which will take place during the day at CenterPointe Marina. Anglers, including former AOYs Kevin VanDam, Michael Iaconelli and Skeet Reese, will be available for meet-and-greets, bass-fishing advice and seminars. Local vendors and sponsors will also be on-hand to discuss products and services.

Also on Saturday as part of its Bassmaster Fan and Military Appreciation Day, B.A.S.S. will give a special commemorative Bassmaster cap to the first 250 military service members who come to the B.A.S.S. booth with a military identification card. All 50 Elite anglers will be on hand to sign autographs as well.

Activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public. Companies like Mercury, Nitro, Skeeter, Triton and Yamaha will have booths at the expo and will offer demo rides. Toyota, Carhartt, Berkley, Humminbird, Livingston Lures, Lowrance, Minn Kota, Power-Pole, Shimano, Rigid Industries and A.R.E. Accessories, Dick Cepek Tires, HUK Performance Clothing will also exhibit.

For more event information, including the Bassmaster University schedule, visit Bassmaster.com.

The local hosts for the event are the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center and the Door County Visitor Bureau.

Wetherell Wins On Home Waters In Eastern Divisional – Bass

Wetherell Wins On Home Waters In Eastern Divisional

[print_link]

HARTFORD, Conn. — Alex Wetherell of Middletown, Conn., staged a come-from-behind win Friday on his home waters of the Connecticut River during the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Divisional.

The 22-year-old angler came in with only four fish on the final day of the tournament. Even though he knew the four largemouth he had were good ones, he wasn’t convinced he could pull out a win with them.

“I was heading in from an hour-and-a-half ride, and I thought as I got closer, I could stop and cast some more,” said Wetherell, a student at Central Connecticut State University. “I stopped at one spot, but I didn’t get any bites.

“Then, instead of stopping any more, I decided to play it safe and come in,” he said. “And I guess it worked out.”

Wetherell’s name is familiar to long-time fans of the sport because five years ago, he hoisted a B.A.S.S. trophy over his head. He was the 2010 Junior Bassmaster World champion when he was just 17. He then went on to fish as many other events as he could with the aim of becoming a professional bass fisherman.

Now, he’s made one big step toward that goal by securing a berth in the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, Nov. 5-7, in Monroe, La. If he wins his division there, he’ll advance to the bass fishing world’s biggest stage, the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

“I’ve had some really good mentors,” Wetherell said. “Terry Baksay mentored me throughout the Junior Bassmaster program, and Dan Stevens has taught me how to become an ever better fisherman as an adult. I used to only want to fish my strengths, but now I’m open to whatever will help me win.”

Those lessons came in handy during the Eastern Divisional, when he had to change course to upgrade his weight.

“I had been targeting smallmouth each morning, and really throughout the day,” Wetherell said. “But today, I scrapped all that and targeted only largemouth.”

That decision landed him one of the only two double-digit sacks in the competition. His weight increased daily, from 6 pounds, 5 ounces of smallmouth on Wednesday, to 9 pounds, 11 ounces of largemouth on Thursday, to a 10-pound, 12-ounce catch on Friday, the final day.

It was also helpful that the two anglers ahead of him — Day 2 leader Jamie Hartman of New York, and David Dziob of Connecticut, who caught the biggest bag of the tournament on Day 2 — weighed in bags of 2 and 3 pounds, respectively, on Friday.

Wetherell was grateful that he was familiar with the Connecticut River.

“There’s no way to figure out this river in a week or two,” he said. “You have to know certain rocks, certain grass areas, that the bass only get on at certain times of the year. And then you have to hit them at the right tides.

“You could work a certain grassline or piece of wood and get nothing, but then half an hour later, when the tide has changed, you could come back and it’s a whole different story.”

Remembering that fish could change that quickly was key for Wetherell.

“My early morning spot for Wednesday and Thursday was a sand flat down south in Middleton with small bunches of eelgrass,” he explained. “They get up on those flats and feed.”

There, he caught two smallmouth on a topwater on Wednesday and a 12-incher that he later culled on Thursday.

His next area was the Salmon River in Haddam, where he caught three 2-pound-plus largemouth on a Texas rigged worm on Thursday afternoon.

Those catches inspired him to chase only largemouth on the final day, making that hour-and-a-half run south on Friday where he could fish the outgoing tide early in the morning. There, he caught a 3 1/2-pound largemouth dragging a tube and a 4-pounder with a crankbait.

He felt that two of the spots he had hit earlier on Friday to no avail were worth a revisit. He went back and caught his other two bass, right off the same tree.

That’s when he decided to head back to weigh-in. His fishing time was cut short by his long run, and he left his area at 12:30 to get back in, even though he was short of a limit.

By being the top angler on the Connecticut team, Wetherell qualified for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. Alongside him will be the following other team winners: Robert Williamson, Maine; George Barnes, Massachusetts; Dave Andrews, New Hampshire; Casey Smith, New York; Charles Sim, Ontario; Brian Croteau, Rhode Island; Cesar Ventura Pecellin Munoz, Spain; and Skip Sjobeck, Vermont.

In a close race among the states, New York won for having the highest cumulative weight. Its 14 members brought in 155 pounds, 8 ounces. Right behind New York was the home team of Connecticut with 149-12. The next-closest state was Vermont with 104-8.

Another competition was taking place simultaneously, too. Each state sent its high school champions to compete on the Connecticut River alongside the adults. Doug Marino and Noah Winslow of Connecticut, with their coach, Terry Baksay, were the top performers among the high school teams with 10 pounds, 2 ounces. Their next-closest competitors were Ben Wiitala and Damon Coleman of Rhode Island with 9-9.

The biggest bass of the Eastern Divisional was caught by Dave Andrews of Massachusetts on Day 1, at 4 pounds, 10 ounces. Jamie Hartman won the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for leading on the second day, and Skip Sjobeck won the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $250 for being the highest-finishing A.R.E. Truck Caps owner in the tournament.

This divisional was the final one of the season, and now all the contenders for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship have qualified. Stay tuned to Bassmaster.com leading up to and during the championship, Nov. 5-7, for news regarding amateur bass fishing’s biggest championship.
