Missile Jigs Ike Mini Flip Jig Review Jason Sealock

Missile Jigs Ike Mini Flip Jig Review

Jason Sealock

Check out this great little jig for fishing docks, sparse cover and more.

The Ike Mini Flip Jig from Missile Jigs offers bass anglers a compact jig for fishing on lighter flipping setups around more sparse cover. It features a short-shank, lighter-wire flipping hook with a recessed line-tie in the jighead and a finesse strand skirt. It can be used as a finesse casting jig, light pitching jig and makes a great dock jig.

The jig is not meant to be a replacement for all heavy-duty flipping jigs. It’s designed for ultra clear water, cold water and pressured bass fishing waters, where natural presentations are of paramount importance. The finer strands on this skirt will move more with less movement by the angler. If you trim them a bit they will open up and “breath” even more.

FLW FOUNDATION SPECIAL OLYMPICS FISHING DERBY SET FOR SATURDAY OF FORREST WOOD CUP

FLW FOUNDATION SPECIAL OLYMPICS FISHING DERBY SET FOR SATURDAY OF FORREST WOOD CUP
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (August 13, 2015) – As thousands of fishing fans gather in Hot Springs next week to celebrate the Forrest Wood Cup, the sport of fishing will celebrate the athletes of Special Olympics Arkansas by hosting the FLW Foundation Special Olympics Fishing Derby. Supported by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), the derby will be Saturday, August 22nd from 9-11 a.m. at the AGFC Family Park located at 215 Family Park Road in Hot Springs.
The derby was the brainchild of FLW Tour pro Cody Kelley of Conway, Arkansas. Kelley supported Special Olympics Arkansas by donating his title sponsorship to the organization throughout the entire 2015 season, his first as a professional.
“Over the year I have come to know real champions and I have established real friendships through my partnership with Special Olympics Arkansas,” said Kelley. “With the Forrest Wood Cup taking place in Hot Spring this year, I knew that it was a special circumstance that we had to capitalize on for them. The idea of hosting an FLW fishing derby for those athletes seemed like the perfect fit.”
Kelley presented the idea to FLW officials and the AGFC, who immediately agreed to provide support.
“We were extremely excited when Cody presented the idea to us and we committed to do whatever we could to help support the event,” said Joe Opager, Director of Public Relations with FLW. “The FLW Foundation encourages all FLW anglers, members and fans to promote the sport of fishing and build passion through participation. Cody has gone above and beyond in the organization of this event and FLW is very proud to be a part of it.”
More than 50 rod-and-reel combos have been donated by Kid Casters for the Special Olympics Athletes to use in the two-hour event. Derby winners will be recognized at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the Walmart FLW Tour stage prior to the Forrest Wood Cup day-three weigh-in at the Bank of the Ozarks Arena. Special Olympics Arkansas Athletes will then watch the FLW Tour pros bring their bass to the stage in style in a special V.I.P. seating section.
“I am honored to be a part of two wonderful organizations and I am proud that they are coming together for this great event,” Kelley said.
The Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of professional bass fishing, returns to Lake Ouachita and Hot Springs, next week, August 2023 to crown bass fishing’s top angler of 2015. Hosted by Visit Hot Springs and the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the tournament will feature 50 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for the sport’s biggest awards – $500,000 cash in the pro division and $50,000 cash in the co-angler division.

Martens Seizes Control At Bassmaster Elite On Chesapeake Bay

NORTH EAST, Md. — Some fishermen like to play it safe when they’re leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race late in the season.

They focus on getting a good limit, drawing a paycheck and earning valuable AOY points.
But Aaron Martens seems to be taking a different approach during this week’s Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Chesapeake Bay.

The Alabama angler, who came into the event with a slim 11-point lead in the AOY standings, caught 17 pounds, 8 ounces of bass and claimed the Day 1 lead in a tournament that is shaping up to be a tough one down the stretch. Michigan angler Chad Pipkens is second in the tournament standings with 16-14, and Japanese pro Morizo Shimizu is third with 16-9.

“I had seven keeper bites, and I broke two of them off,” said Martens, who increased his AOY lead over Dean Rojas to 52 points. “My bites were spread out all day. I wish I could catch them faster. But no matter how fast or slow you move, it’s going to be a bite about every hour and a half.”

Like most of the anglers near the top of the leaderboard, Martens seemed almost surprised to bring in a good catch after a dismal three days of practice.

He said he only has a handful of spots he feels he can depend on, but he thinks he has something figured out with the tidal flows that have such a profound effect on the fishing at Chesapeake Bay. That could affect his decision-making process out of the gate Friday morning.

“There is a one-hour window with the tide when you can catch them really good,” Martens said. “I could run the tide if I had enough spots, but I really don’t.”

Martens said Friday’s early-morning tide isn’t likely to be right in the areas where he caught his fish Thursday. So he’s considering starting in a totally different area, much closer to the launch site.

“There’s a lot of fish right here, and the tide’s going to be really good here tomorrow morning,” Martens said. “If I run straight there (to Thursday’s area), the tide’s not going to be good. I’ve got to look at the tides and consider everything.”

One thing Martens said he won’t be thinking much about is the AOY race.

“I don’t even check the AOY stuff,” Martens said. “My wife checks it and tells me where Dean Rojas is, but I can’t worry about that. I’ve got to put AOY to the back of my mind and worry about this event.”

Martens was Angler of the Year in 2005 and 2013, and he has finished in the Top 20 in five out of the six Bassmaster Elite Series events so far this year, including first in the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Havasu presented by Dick Cepek Tires & Wheels in May.

Despite Martens’ excellent day, he’s only 10 ounces ahead of Pipkens, who caught 16-14 after getting off to a slow start.

The 31-year-old pro said he only got four to seven bites a day during practice. But since most of the fish he caught were good ones, he came into the event with perhaps a little more confidence than some of his competitors.

“I knew it was going to be a tough tournament, but I felt like I was probably getting a few more bites than a lot of guys,” Pipkens said. “Between the handful of bites that I was getting every day, I was hoping I could bounce around and catch four to six keepers a day once the tournament started.
Pipkens said success on Chesapeake Bay is not just a matter of finding the right spot, but of hitting that spot at just the right time.

“I didn’t have a fish the first three hours, and I was fishing some good stuff,” Pipkens said. “You’ve just got to keep your head up. I caught my biggest fish today the third time I hit a place, and I hadn’t had a bite yet. It’s just a matter of timing. You hit a place just right, and you might catch two or three like that.”

Behind Martens, Pipkens and Shimizu are California pros Brent Ehrler (15-15) and Skeet Reese (15-13). Florida rookie Koby Kreiger and Virginia pro Jacob Powroznik are tied for sixth with (15-2). Rojas, who led the AOY race much of the season before falling behind Martens, is in 42nd place with 8-7.

The fishing was so tough that 25 anglers zeroed or caught only one fish. Among the anglers who failed to boat a keeper were New Jersey pro Michael Iaconelli and popular Florida pro Shaw Grigsby.

The tournament will resume Friday with takeoff from Anchor Marina and North East Community Park. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3 p.m., with only the Top 50 anglers advancing to Saturday’s semifinal round.

Dom Barretta & Dennie Gilbert Win PBC Cashion Fishing Rods Q#3 ‘EOY’ Trail Results, Kerr Lake Aug. 8th

The Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Qualifier #3 at Kerr Lake was  just a little tough for the 34 teams that fought 15 to 20 mph winds and low water conditions. Air temps ranged
from 72 to 85 and the water level was around 298 for this day. Surface water temps averaged 84 degrees! The  shallow bite was on for a few hours early on then the bass backed off to dropoffs around 15 to 20 feet. It was
tough to sit on deep fish in the high wind conditions.

Dom Barretta & Dennie Gilbert deep caught 5 bass weighing 16.31 lbs to take 1st Place and 1st Place TWT  for a total of $1,695!
2nd Place was won by Ryan and Wayne Mace with 5 bass weighing 16.24 lbs. They also  won 2nd Place TWT & 1st Place Big Fish (4.92 lbs.)to take home a total of $1,323. The 3rd Place Team of
Brandon Gray & Robert Perkins landed 5 bass weighing 16.05 lbs. & also tied for 2nd Place Big Fish (4.09 lbs.)  with Vern Fleming & Glen Long to take home $510. It was really close weights for these top 3 !!

92 bass were brought to the scales for a total of 231 pounds averaging 2.51 lbs. each. Most were caught on  straight lining spoons, Drop Shots, Carolina worm rigs, crankbait & jig combos in 15 feet of water on average. A

B.A.S.S. Partners With Three Local Organizations For Chesapeake Bay Event

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. has acquired three new local partners for the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Chesapeake Bay — the Maryland Lottery, the town of North East and the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC).

“Partnerships with local and regional companies highlight organizations that are committed to the success of their community,” said Michael Mulone, B.A.S.S. director of event partnerships. “These partnerships provide the companies with a platform for employee and customer recognition as well as the affiliation with the Bassmaster brand.”

The tournament, Aug. 13-16, will mark the first time B.A.S.S. has held an Elite Series event on the bay; however, the fishery has an impressive B.A.S.S. history as the site of the 1991 Bassmaster Classic.

“ODEC is excited to partner with the Bassmaster Elite Series to bring this event to Cecil County, Maryland,” said Rick Beam, ODEC’s senior vice president for power supply. “As an electric cooperative, we’re very dedicated to the communities we serve, and this tournament is a great way to enhance tourism activities in this part of the state.”

The tournament pits 107 of the top bass anglers in the world against each other, as they compete for the $100,000 first-place prize and valuable Toyota Angler of the Year points.

“We are thrilled to host this amazing event along our shores, and to share our county with anglers, families and fans from Cecil County, the Mid-Atlantic and across the United States,” said Tari Moore, of Cecil County Executive. “It is my sincere honor to welcome everyone to Cecil County and the 2015 Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite tournament and Summerfest, where visitors will find some of the best bass fishing on the East Coast.”

Under terms of the agreements, B.A.S.S. will host VIP experiences for guests of the companies, including back stage tours, meet and greets with anglers and extensive hospitality. In addition, the companies will exhibit at the outdoor expo.

“The Maryland Lottery’s partnership with the Bassmaster Elite Series allowed us to provide a unique opportunity for eight of our players who won tournament VIP packages,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director Gordon Medenica. “Our winners will get a look behind the scenes of the tournament and get to meet some of the world’s best anglers. We are proud to support the Cecil County Economic Development and Tourism Department, and we salute B.A.S.S. for its conservation efforts.”

Guests of the Maryland Lottery are winners of a second-chance sweepstakes, which ran earlier this year. These winners will be travelling to the event from outside of the local area, with a guest of their choice and $1,000 cash prize.

“We’re pleased to have partnered with such highly regarded organizations within the Cecil County community,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “Support from these local companies reinforces the importance of valuable partnerships, which are key to making our events a success.”

Daily takeoffs will be at 6:15 a.m. ET from Anchor Marina and Adjoining North East Community Park with weigh-ins scheduled at East Community Park for 3 p.m.

The Elite Series Outdoor Expo will have B.A.S.S. sponsors onsite throughout the weekend with activities, games and prizes for attendees. All of the family-friendly activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public.

The local host for the event is Cecil County Tourism.

SHORAGA WINS WALMART BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION EVENT ON OHIO RIVER

GOLCONDA, Ill. (Aug. 10, 2015) – Dan Shoraga of West Frankfort, Illinois, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday to win the fourth Walmart Bass Fishing League Illini Division tournament on the Ohio River. For his victory, Shoraga earned $6,505.
Shoraga said he ran to the Cumberland River to target bass congregating in 20-yard stretches of riprap.
“I stayed on three spots throughout the day,” said Shoraga, who picked up his first win after two previous top-10 finishes in BFL competition. “I only caught seven keepers during the tournament, but it seemed like fish were biting about every 30 minutes.
“I caught the biggest fish of the tournament – a 5-pound, 4-ouncer – around 8:30 a.m. using a green-pumpkin and chartreuse-colored tube,” continued Shoraga. “For the remaining six I used a Zoom Trick Worm in the same color.”
Shoraga said it was his familiarity with the Cumberland River that helped him edge out the competition.
“There were several boats around me, but a lot of anglers tend to leave if they don’t get a quick bite,” said Shoraga. “In my experience on the Cumberland, you can go without a bite for an hour and then bring in three bass quick. You just have to keep your confidence.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Dan Shoraga, West Frankfort, Ill., five bass, 12-11, $3,505 +$2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus + $1,000 Mercury Bonus

PLATTSBURG, N.Y. (Aug. 10, 2015) – Ed Casey of Whiteford, Maryland, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the fourth Walmart Bass Fishing League Northeast Division tournament on Lake Champlain. For his victory, Casey earned $5,917.
“I had three key spots that were holding fish,” said Casey, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “They were humps right along the weed lines that had chunk rock, mussels and scattered weeds.”
Casey said he used a wacky-rigged Yamamoto Senko worm as bait first thing in the morning, but switched to a white Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper swimbait to attract schools of bass.
“After some fan-casting they started attacking,” said Casey. “After that I didn’t put down the Skinny Dipper the rest of the day.
“At first I worked it fast,” continued Casey. “The fish were aggressive. Later in the afternoon I had to slow down my retrieve. When the bait came out of the weeds I’d let it fall and they would fight for it.”
Casey said he ended up catching approximately 15 keepers over the course of the tournament.
“I caught my kicker around noon – a 5-pounder,” Casey said. “That really sealed the deal for me.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Ed Casey, Whiteford, Md., five bass, 19-3, $3,917 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

Fish Head Spin Review by Jason Sealock

Fish Head Spin Review

Jason SealockPublisher

Here is one of those staple fishing lures that anglers who fish clear waters probably should have on hand. See why here.

One of the things we find fascinating about fishing is how one man’s idea on fooling a fish spawns a whole new class of fishing lures. A lot of those ideas are just expansions of simple lead heads and plastic tails. Creations like the Chatterbait, the Alabama Rig, the Big O or the Senko spawned whole classes of lures and copy cats that sought to catch as many anglers and fish as the original.

One of those original ideas that seems to be a staple in clear-water anglers’ tackle boxes is the Fish Head Spin. This simple lead minnow head and hook with a small swivel and blade attached to it. Sought a better way to present minnow plastics to bass in deeper clear waters.

Similar to its smaller cousin the Road Runner, the Fish Head spin gives the angler a very life-like minnow head and subtle vibration and flash of a blade below a minnow shaped plastic, usually a soft plastic jerkbait or small swimbait. I’ve fished one for years, and a recent outing to Table Rock Lake reminded me how much I enjoyed fishing with these baits.

Here are some thoughts I had on the Sworming Hornet Fish Head Spin and why you might want to get a few for the tackle box.
