Illinois Fan’s Dream Becomes Reality, Wins Fish With Greg Hackney Sweepstakes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For longtime B.A.S.S. member Doug Markwell of Greenup, Ill., getting the opportunity to fish with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Greg Hackney was only a dream. That dream became a reality when he was selected as the sole winner of the Fish with Greg Hackney Sweepstakes.

“I have entered many sweepstakes daily for years from Bassmaster and other outdoor sites, but this is the first big prize I have won, proving the “never give up” theory,” Markwell said.

Markwell will take a trip to a to-be-determined location to fish with Hackney. The trip will include round-trip airfare for one; three nights/four days hotel accommodations; a rental car; and $500 spending money.

In addition to the fishing trip with Hackney, Markwell also won a Garmin echo 551dv Fishfinder, a Garmin echoMAP 43dv Chartplotter, four Dick Cepek Tires, a Quantum Smoke baitcast reel and Quantum Smoke 7-6 heavy action rod, a STORMR Fusion Suit, a Strike King lures pack, a Bass Mafia Tackle Box and Flex Fit Cap and a Gamma lines pack. The value of his prizes total $6,000.

Markwell has been an avid angler and hunter since a young age. He fished local tournaments throughout his 20s, but now enjoys recreational fishing on one of Bassmaster’s Top 100 Lakes, Newton Lake, near his Illinois home.

“A chance to fish with someone like Greg, who represents the current generation of anglers so well, will be truly an honor,” Markwell said. “I am hoping for a smallmouth bass trip, as I rarely get a chance at a big bronzeback in my neck of the woods.”

“The chance to learn from Greg and swap a few fishing stories will be the true prize,” Markwell said.

Another lucky fishing fan will have a chance to get on the water with an Elite Series pro very soon through the Fish with Casey Ashley Sweepstakes, which is currently underway on Bassmaster.com

The winner will receive a fishing trip with 2015 GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion Casey Ashley, which includes round-trip airfare, ground transportation, $500 cash and Casey’s gear. In addition, the winner will also receive a Triton/Mercury bass boat. The total value of the prize is $35,000.

The Fish with Casey Ashley Sweepstakes runs through August 31st, and the winner will be selected on Sept. 8, 2015.

B.A.S.S. Lends Support To Center For Coastal Conservation

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization, today announced its corporate sponsorship of the Center for Coastal Conservation. The sponsorship underscores the commitment of B.A.S.S. to the preservation of recreational angling and conservation of U.S. waterways.

“Having the support of an organization like B.A.S.S. is incredibly meaningful,” said Center for Coastal Conservation President Jeff Angers. “The members of B.A.S.S. clearly share our vision for the future of recreational fishing and boating, and their participation in our organization will serve to strengthen our abilities to advance federal public policy that benefits the entire fishing and boating community.”

This announcement comes on the heels of the official B.A.S.S. endorsement of “Bass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation (BASC),” a new, intuitive online advocacy system that allows fishing enthusiasts to write, call, or tweet their legislators through prewritten engagements online at www.bassforsalt.com.

“The issues addressed by the Center for Coastal Conservation and Bass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation affect legislative policy battles that have the potential to spread to the freshwater fisheries we all love,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “Through our active membership in the Center and our involvement with BASC, we have the opportunity to make our voices heard through advocacy for the preservation and growth of recreational angling.”

The Center for Coastal Conservation is a coalition of the leading advocates for marine recreational fishing and boating. It is dedicated to promoting sound conservation and wise use of ocean resources and supports federal legislators through its political action committee, Center PAC. The organization is non-partisan and focuses on having an impact in the national political arena, principally Congress and federal regulatory agencies, to promote a quality recreational fishery and improve angling and boating access.

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION FINALE SET FOR LAKE DARDANELLE

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION FINALE SET FOR LAKE DARDANELLE
[print_link]
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (Aug. 4, 2015) – The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to Lake Dardanelle August 13-15 for a tournament presented by Mercury when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the third and final stop of 2015 in the Central Division.
“Lake Dardanelle has a lot of bass in it and they’re catching them,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Robbie Dodson of Harrison, Arkansas. “Recent tournament winners on the lake have needed over 20 pounds to win so it’s going to be an exciting tournament for everyone involved.
“If I had to make a guess as to where this event will be won, it would most likely be on the Arkansas River,” Dodson continued. “Anglers will probably be up shallow flipping jigs into the grass or throwing a frog into lily pads, if the high waters haven’t washed them away. I see hydrilla and bank grass playing a role as well. If I were to grab some baits and head out there today, I’d be reaching for swim jigs or frogs of the black and blue variety. They tend to do well in these conditions.
“Another popular pattern will be fishing out deep on the main lake using Carolina-rigged worms and football-head jigs,” said Dodson. “But, I don’t think there will be enough weight in those areas to win it. A good idea would be to fish the current to try and round out the pattern.”
When asked about a winning weight, Dodson said a three-day-cumulative weight nearing 55 pounds should take the top honors.
“18 pounds a day should be enough to be in contention for the win,” said Dodson. “But I know someone will find those 20-pound bags. They’re definitely in this lake.”
Anglers will take off from the Lake Dardanelle State Park ramp located at 2428 Marina Road in Russellville at 6:30 a.m. CT each day. Weigh-in on days one and two will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. Weigh-in on day three will take place at Walmart located at 2409 E. Main St. in Russellville at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.
The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2015 Rayovac FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 29-31 on the Ohio River in Paducah, Kentucky.

CANNELTON, Ind. (Aug. 3, 2015) – Gary Edwards of Milton, Kentucky, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Hoosier Division tournament on the Ohio River. For his victory, Edwards earned $6,963.
“I’ve had a lot of second- and third-place finishes over the years, but never a win,” said Edwards. “It feels really good to finally take a tournament.”
Edwards said he focused on clay banks in a small creek off of the main river in order to catch his winning stringer.
“The fish were setting up well due to the amount of shad fry in the area,” said Edwards. “I also liked the water clarity, which was a factor I focused on during practice.”
The Kentucky angler said he caught six keepers using a black and blue-colored jig with a blue Big Bite Baits worm.
“The fish were very inactive so I had to really slow down and work the jig,” said Edwards.
Edwards said he caught the majority of his fish within the first two hours of the tournament, but his biggest fish – a 3-pounder – came just two minutes before he had to leave his spot to return to the weigh-in.
“That fish put me over the top,” said Edwards. “I was fortunate enough to cull a smaller fish out and secure the win.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Gary Edwards, Milton, Ky., five bass, 11-11, $3,963 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus + $1,000 Mercury Bonus
2nd:         Jason Hubbard, Lewisport, Ky., five bass, 9-10, $1,981
3rd:          Marty Sisk, Evansville, Ind., five bass, 9-1, $1,322

McNaron caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the pro division, a fish weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces and earned the day’s Big Bass award of $535.
Austin LeClere of Cannelton, Indiana, weighed in two bass totaling 5 pounds, 8 ounces Saturday to win $1,981 in the co-angler division.
The top 10 co-anglers were:
1st:          Austin LeClere, Cannelton, Ind., two bass, 5-8, $1,981
2nd:         Rob Leavitt, Richmond, Ind., two bass, 4-14, $991
3rd:          Mark Heidt, Versailles, Ind., four bass, 4-11, $662
4th:          Jacob Bierman, Cincinnati, Ohio, two bass, 4-10, $462
5th:          Matt Orschell, Lawrenceburg, Ind., three bass, 4-9, $396
6th:          Tim Shields, Greenwood, Ind., three bass, 4-1, $363
7th:          Gary McClure, Churubusco, Ind., three bass, 3-14, $330

8th:          Douglas  Salzman, Newburgh, Ind., three bass, 3-13, $280
10th:        Charles   Hardin, Evansville, Ind., three bass, 3-12, $231
Bierman caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the co-angler division and earned the day’s Big Bass award of $267.
The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 15-17 Regional Championship on Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Evers Finishes Strong At St. Lawrence River, Becomes First To Score Back-to-Back Elite Series Wins

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., takes first place at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River. He brought a four-day total of 77 pounds, 10 ounces to the scales to be the first angler ever to win back-to-back Elite Series titles.

Evers Finishes Strong At St. Lawrence River, Becomes First To Score Back-to-Back Elite Series Wins

August 2,2015

WADDINGTON, N.Y.  — Confidence means a lot to a tournament bass fisherman, and Oklahoma pro Edwin Evers said his was sagging a bit after a couple of tough events earlier this year.

A win last month at BASSfest made Evers feel much better — and with a renewed sense of confidence, he went out and claimed his second victory in a row in this week’s Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River.

With a four-day total of 77 pounds, 10 ounces, Evers became the first angler to win back-to-back events in the 10-year history of the Elite Series. He cemented the victory with a Sunday catch of five smallmouth bass that weighed 17-8.

Evers said the victory at BASSfest — and the automatic berth into the GEICO Bassmaster Classic that came with it — played a major role in his New York strategy.

“Last time we were here, I went upriver every day,” said Evers, who chalked up his 10th career B.A.S.S. victory at Waddington. “But I didn’t think I could win there. I felt like this year coming back, everybody was going to try to go that way and get as close as they possibly could to where Brandon Palaniuk won the last time we were here (in 2013). So I went the other direction, and it was hard.”

Evers said he fished extremely long days during practice, taking advantage of a northern sun that often stays out from 5 a.m. to almost 10 p.m. But despite the long hours, he only got seven bites the first day of practice, four the second day and seven the third day.

He said he stuck with his decision, partly because his Classic berth is already in the bag.

“It made it a lot easier to do what I did this week, because I was not getting many bites,” Evers said. “It was a do-or-die deal. To finish 25th the last time we were here was decent, but I wanted a chance to win.”

Evers caught his fish drifting shallow areas where he could see smallmouth feeding in the glass-clear waters of the St. Lawrence. He said he probably used 20 different lures, and even the ones that didn’t produce bites often helped him locate fish that chased the lures back to the boat.

His top producer was a wacky rigged Zoom Fluke Stick in a green pumpkin color. He also used a Megabass Spark Shad swimbait in ayu, a Zoom called a Z-Drop worm, a Megabass X80 jerkbait, a white/silver/gold War Eagle spinnerbait, a small hair jig and a Zoom Speed Craw.

He fished all of the baits on the lightest line possible, using 6- and 8-pound braid all week.

“I could probably name three or four more baits that I caught good fish on this week,” Evers said. “I’m serious when I say I probably had 20 rods laid across the front of my boat, and they all helped me in some way.”

The swimbait often paved the way for him to land fish on the Fluke Stick.

“There were times when I’d throw that swimbait out there, and the fish just wouldn’t commit to it,” Evers said. “But when they’d follow it back to the boat, I would know they were there and I could really go to work on them.”

Sunday’s catch of 17-8 marked the second straight day that Evers failed to break the 20-pound mark after topping it his previous six times on the water. But with the rest of the field fading, he still left with the win.

Texas angler Alton Jones caught 16-7 Sunday and finished second with 73-15, nearly 4 pounds behind Evers. Louisiana’s Greg Hackney, the reigning Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, finished third with 72-11; Tennessee angler Brandon Card placed fourth with 72-6; and Skeet Reese, winner of the Diet Mountain Dew Elite at Lake Guntersville this year, was fifth with 72-5.

A 94th-place finish on the Sabine River in March and 55th on the Sacramento River in May put Evers in a tough spot in the Angler of the Year race. But with a third-place finish at Lake Havasu in May and now his back-to-back victories, he’s moved into fourth place in the AOY standings, trailing leader Aaron Martens by 76 points.

As for becoming the first angler to win back-to-back events on the Elite Series, Evers said it might be next week before it actually sinks in.

“It hasn’t hit home yet,” Evers said. “It’s amazing. I can’t believe it. I know some buddies of mine are going to be really upset with me because I told them I didn’t have a good practice, but I really didn’t.

“It just all came together this week.”

The crowds got larger each day as North Country bass fishing fans turned out in droves to watch Evers make history. Waddington, N.Y., came close to breaking its own Elite Series attendance record of more than 34,000 set in 2013 at the Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown.Bonuses and Contingency Awards:
  • The $1,000 award for the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points leader will go to Aaron Martens.
  • The Power-Pole Captain’s Cash will award $1,000 to Greg Hackney.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON LAKE CHAUTAUQUA

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON LAKE CHAUTAUQUA
[print_link]
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (Aug. 2, 2015) – The Christopher Newport University (CNU) team of Cody Griffey of Smithfield, Virginia, and Peter Kenny of Ashburn, Virginia, won the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference tournament on Lake Chautauqua Saturday with five bass weighing 12 pounds, 11 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Championship tournament.
“This was the last College Fishing tournament that I was eligible to compete in, so the pressure was really on to make it in to the top 15 and advance to the Conference Championship,” said Griffey, who recently graduated from CNU. “To come up here to Chautauqua and get the win feels surreal.”
“We stayed on one key area for the majority of the day,” said Kenny, a senior at CNU.  “It was a shallow, 10-yard long gravel bank that had a mixture of eel grass and milfoil. All of the fish we caught came from one foot of water or less.”
The duo said that the morning bite was crucial for them – they caught eight fish total, but not one after 8:30 a.m. All of their fish came on a 3/8-ounce Perch-colored B.J.’s jig with a white Zoom Swimmin’ Super Fluke.
“The shade line seemed to be the key,” Kenny said. “The sun was rising at our backs, and the way we positioned our boat allowed us to make long casts up to the bank. As soon as we would reel back to the shade line, that’s where we would get bit.”
The top 15 teams that advanced to the Northern Conference Championship tournament on the Chesapeake Bay are:
