LA PLATA, Md. (June 23, 2015) – The Potomac Falls High School team of Jordon Mazza and Richard Wellhouse brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 12 pounds, 2 ounces, to win the 2015 Virginia State High School Fishing Championship on the Potomac River. The win earned the team the title of state champions and qualified the team to compete in the High School Fishing Northern Conference championship on Lake Winnipesaukee in September.
“This river is basically our home water so we are glad we did well,” said Mazza, a senior this fall.
Mazza said the duo mainly used a swimjig in grassy areas to catch most of their fish.
“We used a wide variety of colors, but darker baits seemed to be a little more effective,” said Mazza.
“We would catch a few and then they would shut off,” added Wellhouse, a recent graduate. “I think our two biggest keys to success were sticking with the swimjig and paying attention to the tide.”
The top team on the Potomac River that advanced to the Northern Conference Championship was:
1st:          Potomac Falls High School – Jordon Mazza and Richard Wellhouse, five bass, 12-2
Rounding out the top 10 teams in the Virginia State High School Championship were:
2nd:         Chatham High School – Bradley Gauldi and Austin Carter, five bass, 12-1
3rd:          Brentsville District High School – Christopher Butler and Brian Thomas, five bass, 11-14
4th:          Patrick County High School – Landon Siggers and Logan Reynolds, five bass, 10-5
5th:          Broadway High School / Stuarts Draft High School – Jacob Lambert and Kile Quick, five bass, 10-3
6th:          Abingdon High School – Zachary Francis and Tyler Dixon, five bass, 10-2
7th:          Tunstall High School – Christian Bonar and Jacob Johnson, five bass, 9-14
8th:          Patrick County High School – Dillon Bryant and Dustin Lawless, three bass, 5-10
9th:          Honaker High School – Hunter Eaton and Cody Fuller, two bass, 3-14
10th:        Southwest Virginia Junior Anglers – Connor Harrison and Dylan Andis, one bass, 3-2
Also held Saturday was the Potomac River OPEN, which featured out-of-state High School Fishing teams competing for entry into the Conference Championships. The top three teams in the Potomac River OPEN that advanced to the Northern Conference Championship were:
1st:          Pomfret Student Bass Anglers – Aaron Dixon and Emery Kitts, five bass, 10-2
2nd:         Susquehanna Valley Fishing Club – River Mertz and Brent Engleman, five bass, 9-15
3rd:          Lincoln County High School – Carson Cochran and Hunter White, four bass, 7-15
Complete results can be found at HighSchoolFishing.org.
The 2015 Virginia State High School Fishing Championship and Potomac River OPEN was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held this season. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2016. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2015 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on July 8-11. At the 2014 World Finals more than $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded. Visit HighSchoolFishing.org for details.

ONTARIO’S RICHARDSON WINS WALMART BFL ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE

ONTARIO’S RICHARDSON WINS WALMART BFL ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE
Canadian Angler Wins $120,000, Entry into Forrest Wood Cup
 [print_link]
BUCHANAN, Tenn. (June 20, 2015) – Curtis Richardson of Belleville, Ontario, Canada, brought a 19-pound, 9-ounce five-bass limit to the scale Saturday to win the Walmart BFL All-American on Kentucky Lake and the $120,000 payday. Richardson’s three-day cumulative weight of 15 bass totaling 66-5 gave him a 3-pound, 6-ounce edge over second-place angler Jeremy Lawyer of Sarcoxie, Missouri, in the nationally-televised event which hosted the nation’s top weekend anglers.

“I’m absolutely speechless right now,” said Richardson, who also qualified for the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup – the world championship of bass fishing – via his win Saturday. “This win means a lot for my family and I, and my fishing career. I’m still trying to take it all in.”
Richardson said he secured his winning stringer by targeting a shell bed and a point littered with stumps – a pattern he’s stuck to over the three-day tournament.
“I knew those two areas had big ones. I ran to each of my three main spots before 9 a.m.,” said Richardson. “I used a silver Nichols Lures Ben Parker Magnum Spoon and was only able to get five bites, four of which I lost.
“After that I really pushed for big fish by working my way back through those spots,” continued Richardson. “During my second trip to the point, I switched to a wacky-rigged Red Bug-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm on a drop-shot.”
Around 10:30 a.m. Richardson said he caught three of his winning fish using the Trick Worm at his third spot.
“The drop-shot rig was the only way to get a bite,” Richardson said. “At 12:30 I returned to the point and shell bed for a third time and caught a fish at each location, including the giant 6-pounder that gave me the win.”
Richardson estimated he had around a dozen bites over the course of his final day on the water.
“I didn’t think I had anywhere close to the weight I brought in,” said Richardson. “I actually started thinking about how much prize money second place would take home on my way to the scale. I guess being in that mindset made the victory that much sweeter.”
The top 10 boaters that finished the tournament:
               1st:          Curtis Richardson , Belleville, Ontario, Canada, 15 bass, 66-5, $120,000 + 2015 Forrest Wood Cup entry

ONTARIO’S RICHARDSON TAKES LEAD AT WALMART BFL ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE

Georgia’s Treadwell leads co-anglers

[print_link]

BUCHANAN, Tenn. (June 19, 2015) – Curtis Richardson of Belleville, Ontario, Canada, took the lead on day two of the Walmart BFL All-American on Kentucky Lake with a 21 pound, 15 ounce five-bass limit and a two-day cumulative of 10 bass weighing 46-12. The tournament now heads into the final day of competition with the boater and co-angler fields being cut to the final 10 in the three-day event. Richardson will enter the final day with a 1-pound, 4-ounce lead over second-place angler Billy Schroeder of Paducah, Kentucky, who has a two-day weight of 10 bass totaling 45-8.

“My strategy today was to find areas with a lot of fish but that were close together,” said Richardson, who qualified for the All-American via the TBF National Championship. “I wanted to be able to hit a spot, then let things calm down and go back at a later time.
“I caught my first two fish around 9 a.m. on a ledge with a shell bed on top,” continued Richardson. “They were my two biggest and came from 16 to 18 feet of water. After that I went to a point with stumps on the end and caught two more fish – a 3-pounder on a drop-shot rig and a 4-pounder on my main bait.”
Richardson said his third spot was a “classic Kentucky Lake ledge” that only produced a 2-pound fish for him, the smallest of his stringer.
“I have confidence my bites tomorrow will be 5-pounders on my two main areas,” Richardson said.
Richardson declined to discuss his individual baits, but said that he was “fishing fast.”
“All of my spots were within about five miles of one another,” said Richardson. “Tomorrow I plan to stick to the same pattern. If I get a bite at the spots I’m hitting now, there’s a ninety-percent chance it’s a big one. My co-anglers and I haven’t caught many small ones at all.”
The top 10 boaters advancing to the final day of competition on Kentucky Lake are:
1st:          Curtis Richardson , Belleville, Ontario, Canada, 10 bass, 46-12
