WOOLEY WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

WOOLEY WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS
Tennessee Pro Beats 145 Anglers, Wins $125,000 in Nationally Televised Event

DAYTON, Tenn. (June 14, 2015) – FLW Tour pro Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tennessee, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Sunday weighing 19 pounds, 6 ounces to win the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers. Wooley’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 92-4 gave him a 1-pound, 6-ounce margin of victory over second place angler Livingston Lures pro Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Arkansas, in the nationally-televised event that featured 146 of the best professional bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for the top cash award of up to $125,000.
“I grew up fishing on Pickwick Lake and Kentucky Lake,” said Wooley, who earned the first Walmart FLW Tour victory of his career in just his second season as a professional. “To get the biggest win of my life on the Tennessee River really means a lot to me. This win is just what I needed to continue my career. This lake is absolutely incredible.
“I thought I had lost the tournament today,” Wooley continued. “My key area where I have caught all of my fish this week shut down and I was only able to catch two fish there. I had to scramble and run a couple of schools that I had been practicing on each day after I’d catch my big weight. I was extremely nervous, because those schools weren’t holding the quality of fish that my original area was. Luckily I was able to pick off a few and got a couple of good bites.
“It was a grind. I thought my limit was a lot smaller than what it ended up being, so that final weigh-in was really stressful,” Wooley said.
Wooley said that he caught his fish this week on a mussel-laden bar near the Chester Frost Park boat ramp. He did most of his damage in the mornings when the gizzard shad were feeding and was catching fish in 12- to 13-feet of water. His key baits were a ½-ounce hand-poured shaky-head rig with a green-pumpkin Zoom Magnum Trick Worm and a green-pumpkin ¾-ounce Strike King Football Jig with a Strike King Rage Craw.
“I fished pretty clean all week, and I only lost one fish,” Wooley went on to say. “Lake Chickamauga will always be special to me after this one. I’ve never been to the Potomac River, but now I’ve got some momentum coming off this one and I love to fish in the grass so I’m going to give it my best shot and we’ll see what happens.”
The top 10 pros finished the tournament:
               1st:          Michael Wooley, Collierville, Tenn., 20 bass, 92-4, $125,000
2nd:         Livingston Lures pro Stetson Blaylock, Benton, Ark., 20 bass, 90-13, $29,154

WOOLEY EXTENDS LEAD ON DAY THREE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

WOOLEY EXTENDS LEAD ON DAY THREE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS
[print_link]
DAYTON, Tenn. (June 13, 2015) – Pro Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tennessee, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday, weighing 23 pounds, 7 ounces, to retain his lead after day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers. The tournament now heads into the fourth and final day of competition and the field is cut to the final 10 in the four-day event, hosted by the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council, that featured 146 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world casting for the top cash award of up to $125,000.

Wooley’s three-day cumulative weight of 72-14 extended his lead to 6 pounds, 2 ounces over second-place angler Livingston Lures pro Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Arkansas, who has a three-day weight of 15 bass totaling 66-12
“Today went great for me,” said Wooley, who has one previous career victory in FLW competition – a Walmart BFL series win on Lake Pickwick in 2013. “I pulled into my main area where I have been catching them all week and had my first keeper in the livewell within 10 minutes. I had a solid 17-pound limit by 8 a.m., then by 8:30 I had all of my weight that I caught today. I left there by 10 a.m. to try to conserve it for one more day.”
Wooley spent the rest of the day scouting his other schools that he has located as contingency plans. He estimated that he caught around 10 more keepers throughout the day, but none that could match the size from his prime location.
“My other areas do not have the quality that my main spot does,” Wooley said. “Tomorrow I’m going to spend as much time as possible there. I feel pretty confident that it can hold up another day.”
Wooley said that he again found success today using a jig and a shaky-head rig with a big worm. He said that he tried to find a reaction bite by throwing big spoons, swimbaits, crankbaits and hair jigs, but never had any luck.
“If I have to go to my backup areas as an emergency, I will,” Wooley said. “I’ve found some schools, but I haven’t seen anything over 3 pound there. I am pretty much 100-percent all-in on my main spot.”
Wooley described his main area as a bar in the middle of a creek that has mussel beds and gizzard shad feeding there in the morning. He said that the fish were sitting in only 12- or 13-feet of water. He’s shared the area with 6th-place angler Larry Nixon all week.
“It’s an awesome feeling to be leading the tournament heading in to the final day,” Wooley went on to say. “I’ve got some legends of the sport in the top-10 with me. I’m going to try not to worry about what everyone else is doing and go out and try to catch the biggest five bass that I can tomorrow. If it happens, it happens. I’m pretty confident that I can catch them.”
The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition on Lake Chickamauga are:
1st:          Michael Wooley, Collierville, Tenn., 15 bass, 72-14

EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE EVENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE

EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING CENTRAL CONFERENCE EVENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE
[print_link]
GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (June 13, 2015) – The Eastern Kentucky University team of Ethan Snyder of Flaherty, Kentucky, and Shaw Owens of Barboursville, Kentucky, won the FLW College Fishing Central Conference event on Kentucky Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 21 pounds, 5 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the FLW College Fishing Central Conference Championship tournament.

“Winning a tournament of this caliber is a big accomplishment for our program,” said Snyder, a recent graduate who received a degree in agronomy.
“We spent a lot of hours preparing for this weekend and carved out a good strategy,” said Owens, a junior majoring in political science. “We wanted to fish drops all day and it ended up working well for us.”
The duo said they went to their key areas on the north end of the lake where they were able to catch a 4- and a 2½-pounder by 7:30 a.m.
“We targeted the breaks and drops in 10 to 20 foot depths,” said Snyder. “We preferred spots that we had found in practice where there were structural irregularities.”
“We each used a ¾-ounce green-pumpkin Strike King football-head jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw to catch our fish,” said Owens. “We also caught a few keepers on a custom swimbait.”
Snyder said that even though the bite slowed down in the afternoon, their morning catches were enough to push them to the top of the leaderboard.
“We hit spots that a lot of people overlooked,” said Snyder. “We had our routes carefully planned out and fired up the right schools at the right time.”
The top 15 teams that advanced to the Central Conference Championship tournament on Carlyle Lake are:
1st:          Eastern Kentucky University – Shaw Owens, Barboursville, Ky., and Ethan Snyder, Flaherty, Ky., five bass, 21-5, $2,000 Club Scholarship

Wright & McGill Skeet Victory Carbon Review Walker Smith

Wright & McGill Skeet Victory Carbon Review

Walker Smith

These rods designed by Elite Series pro Skeet Reese have the sensitivity and power often found in more expensive bass fishing rods

It seems as if I become more peculiar about my fishing rod selection as each year passes. I’ve splurged on more expensive rods in the past and had a few of them snap in half on the very first hookset and I’ve tinkered with some of the budget models that have become some of my absolute favorites.

Striking that happy medium between affordability and high-end performance is paramount when you’re purchasing a new bass fishing rod—but it’s not always easy to do. So when I run across a solid rod that meets my expectations in both areas, I make sure to let our readers know about it.

For the past month or so, I’ve been testing the Wright & McGill Skeet Victory Pro Carbon Casting Rod. As the name implies, this rod series is personally designed by Elite Series pro Skeet Reese. He takes a lot of pride in producing reasonably priced fishing equipment for anglers of all skill levels, so I was immediately intrigued.

He uses these rods on tour, so they have to be good, right?

After hours of testing and tinkering, I think there are a few specific things you should know about these fishing rods.

WOOLEY TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

WOOLEY TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

Arkansas’ LaFleur Wins Co-Angler Title, $25,000

 [print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. (June 12, 2015) – Pro Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tennessee, brought five bass to the scale weighing 23 pounds, 5 ounces to take the lead after day two of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers. Wooley’s two-day cumulative weight of 49-7 gives him a 4-pound, 2-ounce lead over second place pro Billy McDonald of Greenwood, Indiana, who has a two-day weight of 10 bass worth 45-5 as the tournament heads into the third day of competition. The field is now cut to the top 20 in the four-day event, hosted by the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council, that features 146 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world casting for the top cash award of up to $125,000.

“My main area isn’t holding huge numbers of fish, but they are the right quality,” said Wooley, who is fishing his second season as a professional on the Walmart FLW Tour. “I’m catching around 20 keepers each day. The fish that I have been catching are solid fish.”
Wooley described his main area as a bar in the middle of a creek that has mussel beds and gizzard shad feeding there in the morning. He said that the fish were sitting in only 12- or 13-feet of water and he was catching them “dragging.”
“I’ve been trying to get the reaction bite going, but I just haven’t been able to get the school fired up,” Wooley said. “I’m catching everything dragging – a jig and a big shaky-head rig with a big worm.”
Wooley said that he left his area around noon and spent the rest of the day looking for more spots to fish during the weekend. He said that he was able to cull out one or two smaller fish throughout the day as he looked for more schools, and expects some of the community hole schools to open up tomorrow with just 20 boats left in the competition.
“I’m hoping that my area will hold up, but I really don’t have a whole lot of experience here so I don’t really know,” said Wooley. “Hopefully tomorrow some of those big schools will open up. I’m just going to go out and try to catch as much as I can and try to keep the lead.”
The top 20 pros that made the Buck Knives Cut and will fish Saturday on Lake Chickamauga are:

RIDGELAND, Miss. — Overcoming a tournament handicap and applying angling ingenuity ranked ahead of a secret lure and technique for Jamie Laiche, overall winner of the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Central Divisional.

Laiche, of Gonzales, La., won the overall title on Ross Barnett Reservoir with a three-day weight of 38 pounds, 1 ounce. Billy Lemon, who led on Wednesday, finished second with 36-14.

Laiche registered for the tournament on Ross Barnett Reservoir as a nonboater, leaving him without the convenience and confidence of using his personal rig and its fish-catching accessories.

“I had at least 30 offshore ledges with specific areas the size of a car hood holding fish on each spot,” he said.

That was a handicap because Laiche stored all the potentially game-winning waypoints on his boat’s large-screen Lowrance HDS-9 Gen3. Laiche plotted the hot spots during practice.

Laiche removed the electronic graph recorder and rigged it to a makeshift, portable platform, complete with power cable and alligator clips. The idea was to power the unit using the batteries in his partner’s boat.

“I knew my boater wouldn’t have the waypoints stored, obviously, so I just brought them with me,” said Laiche, a member of the Ascension Area Anglers.

As the nonboater, Laiche spent his shared portion of Day 1 on the front deck. Within view was the portable graph that allowed him to make pinpoint casts to specific sweet spots holding bass. He caught a tournament-best 14 pounds, 15 ounces.

Laiche fished Thursday as a boater after his partner called in sick. He fished conservatively, hoping for an opportunity to compete from his personal boat on the final day. He got that chance after his final-day partner forfeited the right to use his boat.

The areas holding the winning fish were offshore ledges tapering from a depth of 3 to 12 feet. The sweet spot, as he called it, was the presence of gravel that attracted baitfish.

On cloudy days, Laiche found roaming bass feeding near the sweet spot with a Bandit 200 Series crankbait. Sunny conditions moved the bass stationary to the bottom. As a result, he switched to a Missile Baits Tomahawk, a ribbontail plastic worm rigged with a 1/4-ounce weight.

The regional tournament advances the top finishing anglers from eight states to the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. Joining Louisiana’s Laiche and Lemon, of Oklahoma, are the following state winners: Doug Thompson, Arkansas; Preston Frazell, Kansas; Donald Adcock, Mississippi; Matt Roberts, Missouri; Jerry Pape, Nebraska; Albert Collins, Texas.

The state competition proved just as dramatic as the win by Laiche. His state won it by the slim margin of 1 pound, 3 ounces. Louisiana’s 14-angler team caught a collective weight of 273 pounds, 2 ounces. Oklahoma finished second with 271-14 and Mississippi came in third with 242-13.

The states competed for a Skeeter/ Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

The event included a friendly competition between state championship high school teams from the region. Mentoring the youths and introducing them to a championship event was the goal. Braden Blanchard and Cade Fortenberry, students at St. Amant High School in Louisiana, won the high school title.

The next divisional tournament is the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional on the Monongahela River in West Virginia. The event is June 17-19 Stay tuned for Bassmaster.com for complete coverage.

Tiger bass fingerlings find new home in SML by Karen Dillon

Christmas came early for avid bass fisherman Robert Wood, and he could barely contain his excitement.

On May 21, Wood and Dan Wilson, fisheries biologist for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, transferred 10,000 2-inch F1 tiger bass fingerlings from the Montgomery, Alabama-based American Sport Fish delivery truck onto a boat for stocking in the lake.

“This is going to change the way that fishing is done on Smith Mountain Lake, starting today,” Wood said.

With that, Wood, along with Dewayne Lamb, owner of Captain’s Quarter, Chad Green and Johnny Martin, released nets of tiger bass fingerlings into the lake.

Over the years, Wood said he’s seen the fishing levels decline, especially during tournaments. After meeting with Wilson to discuss ideas, the option that gained momentum was to stock the tiger bass strand of fish in the lake.

“They have traits of northern bass and they grow faster, but they also have southern bass genetics, which grow larger,” Wood said. “You cross the bass over and come up with a true F1 bass that has both northern and southern genetics in it.”

Wood and the other fishermen started a GoFundMe campaign last month to raise money to stock the fingerlings for the next two years, and contributions have continued to come in, Wood said. He is also accepting donations by mail at 5163 Starkey Road, Roanoke, VA 24018 and at SunTrust Bank’s Westlake branch.

“When we have a tournament in three years and the tournament weights go up, that’s going to get out, and that’s going to go all over the country,” Wood said. “It’ll benefit everybody.”

MCDONALD LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

MCDONALD LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY IGLOO COOLERS

Virginia’s Francis Leads Co-Anglers

DAYTON, Tenn. (June 11, 2015) – Pro Billy McDonald of Greenwood, Indiana, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Thursday weighing 29 pounds, 12 ounces – the third-largest stringer ever weighed on Lake Chickamauga in FLW competition – to grab the lead on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers. McDonald will start the second day of competition with a 3-pound, 10-ounce lead in the nationally televised tournament, hosted by the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council, that features 146 of the top bass-fishing anglers in the country competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“Today was one of those days where every decision that I made was the right one,” said McDonald, who has 17 career top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “I caught fish all day long. I caught some fish shallow and some fish deep. I didn’t stay in one spot, I just kept moving.”
McDonald said that he started his day targeting grassy areas near deep water, then mixed it up and headed offshore for a bit before returning to the shallow grass. Of the five fish that he brought to the scale, three came deep and two came shallow. He declined to mention any bait specifics.
“I’ve got eight rods on the deck, and I’m catching fish on three of them,” McDonald said. “I’m still trying to mix things in.”
McDonald was confident that the fish would replenish in his key areas overnight and plans to approach day two exactly the same.
“These areas are reloading; there is not a doubt in my mind,” McDonald said. “I’m already out of contention to qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup, so I’m rolling the dice in this one and I’m going for the win. I hope I can go back out tomorrow and catch another good bag. If I don’t it won’t be due to lack of an effort, I can guarantee you that.”

Texas’ Albert Collins Takes Lead At Central Divisional

Texas’ Albert Collins Takes Lead At Central Divisional

[print_link]

RIDGELAND, Miss. — Albert Collins is winning a numbers game he’d rather not play at the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Central Divisional on Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Collins, of the Nacogdoches Bass Club, has a slim lead going into the final day with 27 pounds, 3 ounces. Less than one pound behind the Texan is Louisiana’s Jamie Laiche, with 26-6. Behind them is Wednesday’s leader Billy Lemon of Oklahoma with 24-5.

Friday, an overall winner will be determined, and the top angler from each of the eight competing states will advance to the premier event, the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

“I’m catching a lot of numbers, but not the consistent quality bite that I need to be the leader,” said Collins, a veteran bass club angler and a 2013 Bassmaster Classic competitor.

To shake the numbers game, Collins admits he needs at least one or more bigger bass. That’s not a stretch. Each of the past two days has produced 5-pound class largemouth.

“On this lake and in this tournament, one big bass like that can make the difference,” he added. “I have an all-day area, so spending time running between a shallow morning spot and deeper midday place isn’t an issue for me.”

Collins described his key area as a main-lake dropoff that sharply tapers from 5 to 20 feet deep. That likely means the bass are feeding and biting early on the shallow side. As the water warms, the fish move deeper in search of cooler water.

Finding an all-in-one area means more fishing time and a better chance at catching quality bass.

“I have a shallow and deep bite, and fortunately it’s out in the main lake,” Laiche said. “I don’t need to run anywhere.”

To fill his limit Laiche is using a crankbait, Carolina rig and plastic worm, all of the lures proven fish-catchers in shallow and deep water.

By leading the tournament, Collins also goes home with a contingency prize as the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader. The prize is valued at $250.

Oklahoma continues its dominance in the state standings with a cumulative weight of 188 pounds, 10 ounces. Louisiana is second with 177-10 and Mississippi is in third place with 155-15.

The winning state team is awarded a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

The contenders from eight states qualified from local bass clubs and then advanced to state championships. Each team has 14 members. Two of those anglers are part of another competition underway here.

State championship high school teams are competing alongside the adults to hone their skills at the higher level. Their cumulative weight is added to the overall score of the state team.

Each adult angler who wins his state here advances to the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship in November on the Ouachita River in Louisiana.
