Anglers Compete In First High School All-American Tournament

PARIS, Tenn. — Bassmaster Elite Series pros and the nation’s best high school anglers fished side-by-side Saturday in the inaugural Bassmaster High School All-American event, as part of Zippo Bassmaster BASSfest presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps.

The new program was created to reward young anglers who have gone above and beyond — on the water in competition, as well as off the water in school, leadership and community service — and to let them learn from the nation’s best professional anglers.

The consensus at the conclusion of the fun-fishing derby on Tennessee’s Lake Barkley was that the pros learned from the high schoolers, too.

“It was an inspiration to be around these young anglers,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Kevin Ledoux. “It’s great to see that these smart, skilled anglers are the future of our sport.”

The 12 high school anglers were paired by random draw with 12 pros who volunteered their time.
Zeke Gossett, an Alabama angler representing Pell City High School, won the one-day event with his Elite Series partner, Cliff Crochet. The pair caught 14 pounds, 2 ounces.

“We caught all of our fish with a Strike King Hack Attack Swim Jig with a Rage Menace trailer on it, just swimming it super shallow,” said Gossett. “It was a blast. I learned a ton from the shallow water specialist.”

Crochet said he had a great day, not just fishing on Lake Barkley, but also spending time with the accomplished young anglers.

“It’s not just a fishing deal how they were selected,” said Crochet. “It was grades and community service, all that rolled in. All 12 of these kids achieved real high, and I think that’s a cool thing.”

All of the pros shared his sentiment, and many said they are excited about the future of professional fishing with aspiring pros being so skilled at such a young age.

“I think this is one of the most awesome programs,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Gary Klein. “This was the age I started a professional career, at 15. I’m really impressed with these kids. My partner, Trevor Yates from Oklahoma, is absolutely a phenomenal individual, an awesome angler and very passionate about the sport.”

“What we’re doing here in fishing and what B.A.S.S. is doing is building better people,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mark Menendez.

“These 12 All-American kids that you see here, not only are they fantastic fishermen; they have been guided by their parents and their loved ones to do the right things in life, they’re good students, and they’re doing things for our community,” continued Menendez. “If we can do that through fishing, we’re building better people.”

“Thanks to all the pros, especially my partner, Keith Poche, for taking me out today, and to B.A.S.S. for putting this on,” said Nick Montilino of Edina High School in Minnesota, who placed second in the competition. “It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.”

Only 12 young anglers were selected from a pool of more than 200 nominees to be a part of the 2015 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. The high school anglers traveled from all over the country to Lake Barkley, from as far west as Arizona and Colorado and as far east as New Hampshire.

College Wild Card Win For Wallace State – Bassmaster

Joshua Butts (left) and Justin Rivers of Wallace State Community College-Hanceville weighed in 15 pounds Friday for a three-day total weight of 42 pounds, 5 ounces to take home the trophy in the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops held on Lake Barkley out of Dover, Tenn.

College Wild Card Win For Wallace State

DOVER, Tenn. — Joshua Butts and Justin Rivers of Wallace State Community College-Hanceville pulled a come-from-behind win on the final day of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Butts and Rivers caught a five-bass limit weighing 15 pounds to end the tournament with 42 pounds, 5 ounces.

Teams from McKendree University held down the top spots on the first two days, making them favorites to win the title until unseated by Wallace State.

Phillip Germagliotti and Shane Campbell took second with 40-2, while classmates Jordan Ledbetter and Trent Robinson finished third with 37-7.

On Lake Barkley, the winning team focused on fishing a dropoff tapering from 5 feet into the main-river channel.

“The key was a shell and rock bottom,” said Rivers, 27, who is majoring in industrial maintenance. “It’s the hardest bottom around and really held the fish for us all three days.”

Butts and Rivers slowly worked 1/4- and 3/8-ounce lead-head jigs in the shallow shellbeds to trigger strikes. Jig trailers included the Gene Larew Biffle Bug and NetBait Paca Craw soft plastic lures. Strikes occurred as the lure dropped into deeper water where the bass were staging to feed.

The area produced consistently each day and gave the anglers no reason to search for new water.

“Current didn’t even matter that much,” said Butts, 22, who is majoring in welding. “That was huge since the current moved fish deeper in a lot of similar areas.”

Wallace State entered the final round in third place, behind the two teams from McKendree University. Day 2 on Thursday proved a challenge after a two-hour fog delay postponed the start of the competition.

“We were making a long run, and the delay really cut into our fishing time,” Rivers said.

The Top 13 teams in the final standings are invited to the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops. The championship is July 9-11 at Lake DuBay on the Wisconsin River.

Teams received contingency awards in the following categories today:

The Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award goes to McKendree University’s Jordan Ledbetter and Trent Robinson, who led the tournament on Day 2 with 28-11 to share the $500 award.

The Bass Pro Shops/Nitro Big Bag is awarded to Justin Singleton and Zac Bennett of Georgia State for a five-bass limit weighing 17-11, the heaviest single-day catch. The anglers received Bass Pro Shops gift cards worth $250.

The Carhartt Big Bass award of $500 goes to Lance Freeman of Murray State University and Justin Singleton of Georgia College, who with a largemouth bass weighing 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

Howell, Nine Others Earn Second Chance At BASSfest Dollars

[print_link]

DOVER, Tenn. — For the first two days of competition, the Zippo BASSfest at Kentucky Lake presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps has been like most any other Elite Series event.

Besides having 13 extra anglers invited from the Bassmaster Open circuits, the format was exactly the same. But on Friday, a major shift in the rules left no doubt that BASSfest is a special event with its own distinct flavor.

While the Top 50 pros from Days 1 and 2 rested and conducted seminars for fans, the remaining 74 anglers took part in a unique Second Chance tournament on Lake Barkley. While no money was awarded for the one-day free-for-all, the Top 10 finishers earned the right to rejoin the rest of the field Saturday at Kentucky Lake and fight for their share of the $850,000 purse.

Alabama angler and 2014 GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion Randy Howell won the Second Chance event with 18 pounds, 1 ounce. He earned the right to continue fishing Saturday despite being in 63rd place after the first two rounds.

“We fished here in 2006, and I ran to Barkley in that tournament,” said Howell, who didn’t devote any time to Barkley during the three-day practice period before BASSfest. “I ran to a spot today where I caught fish in that tournament. I still had my waypoints from way back then, and I loaded them in last night.”

Howell caught a 3-pounder on his first cast and quickly put together a strong limit, using a variety of lures. Not knowing exactly what he’d need, he had 12 rods on the deck of his boat ready to go.

The three lures that produced best for him were a Livingston Deep Impact 18 Crankbait, a Yamamoto 12-inch curly-tail worm on a 3/4-ounce Magnum Shaky Head by Lunker Lure and a homemade bucktail hair jig. He was fishing a hump where the water dropped from 10 to 15 feet, and he said most of the fish he caught were sitting on the dropoff.

“It’s really cool for that one spot to have paid off from that many years ago,” Howell said. “It’s just amazing that those fish were still on that spot, and nobody had fished it or beat it up. It was a blessing.”

Texas angler James Niggemeyer finished second with 16-11, meaning he’ll go from 88th place after two days to having a second chance to fish for the BASSfest trophy.

With no prior experience on Lake Barkley, Niggemeyer said he just went out and “fished what looked good.” When his early shallow-water plan didn’t work, he switched to a KVD 2.5 crankbait and caught three good fish.

Then he got a little help from Louisiana angler Cliff Crochet.

“I ran into Cliff, and he needed a Rage Craw trailer for the jig he was fishing,” Niggemeyer said. “He told me all about how he was catching them on a jig, and I thought it sounded like a perfect way to fish the long stretches of dead water in between the areas where I was catching fish on a crankbait.

“I did that, and it ended up working.”

Behind Howell and Niggemeyer, the remainder of the Top 10 was as follows: Kevin Short, 16-8; Chad Pipkens, 16-1; Rick Clunn, 15-14; Terry Scroggins, 15-4; Paul Mueller, 14-13; Scott Rook, 13-11; Chad Wiley, 13-8; and Alton Jones, 13-0.

All of the Top 10 finishers will earn at least $10,000 when the main tournament concludes. But it was Short who made the biggest jump in the standings after finishing 122nd out of 124 anglers the first two days at Kentucky Lake with one fish that weighed just 1-11.

He caught his fish Friday off a hump in 12 feet of water on a 6th Sense Crush 300DD crankbait.

“It was catch them one-two-three real quick, and then nothing for a long time,” Short said. “That’s the way it went for me all day long.”

Short was another angler who had never laid eyes on Barkley before Friday.

“I had never been here in my life,” Short said. “So after the first day on Kentucky Lake, I went to (fellow Elite Series angler) Ott DeFoe and asked what he would do if he was going to go to Barkley on Friday and fish. I knew he wouldn’t lie to me, and he told me some things that ended up helping me find some fish.”

The main tournament will resume Saturday on Kentucky Lake with takeoff scheduled for 6:15 a.m. CT at Paris Landing Marina. The weigh-in is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. CT at Paris Landing State Park.

After Saturday’s round, only the Top 12 anglers will advance to Sunday’s championship round with a chance to earn a first-place prize of $100,000 and an automatic berth into the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

EUFAULA, AL (June 5, 2015) – Fact: Kevin VanDam is the all-time money winner on the Bassmaster Tournament trail. He’s captured four Bassmaster Classic titles and seven Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year titles, besides finishing in the Top 10 over 100 times.

Moreover, he’s a terrific ambassador for bass fishing, a top-level promoter, willing educator, and dedicated family man.

And right now – Friday, June 5th, 2015 — KVD is in the hunt for another win at the Zippo BASSfest on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee, where he’s using Humminbird LakeMaster mapping to locate, catch and cull fish with almost super-human ability.

THREE ANGLERS WITHDRAW FROM WALMART FLW TOUR, STEWART TO SIT OUT CHICKAMAUGA

THREE ANGLERS WITHDRAW FROM WALMART FLW TOUR, STEWART TO SIT OUT CHICKAMAUGA
MINNEAPOLIS (June 5, 2015) – Walmart FLW Tour pros Tony Dumitras, Dale Hightower and Jeremy Starks informed FLW of their decisions to withdraw from the remaining two regular-season FLW Tour events in the 2015 season. Pro Kevin Stewart will also miss the Chickamauga event for a family obligation but will return for the sixth and final regular-season tournament on the Potomac River. A tournament field of 148 boats will compete next week at the FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers.
Dumitras, a Winston, Georgia native, recently suffered a heart attack and was ordered by doctors to not fish over the next three to four months. He hopes to return for the 2016 season. He had fished four events in 2015 with his best showing being a 136th-place finish at Lake Eufaula.
Hightower, of Mannford, Oklahoma, had also fished four events this season with his best finish coming at Beaver Lake, 88th-place. Starks, of Scott Depot, West Virginia, fished just one event on Tour this year after being called up from the waiting list in April. He finished in 145th place at Beaver Lake.
Stewart, a native of Elk Grove, California, has fished in four events this season and is currently ranked No. 134 in the 2015 FLW Tour Angler of the Year race. He will re-join the Tour for the Potomac River event.
In FLW Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2015 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 20-23 on Lake Ouachita and is hosted by Visit Hot Springs. The Forrest Wood Cup Champion could win as much as $500,000 – professional bass-fishing’s richest prize.

Evers’ 8-pound Largemouth Lifts Him Into Lead At Zippo BASSfest

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., takes the lead on Day 2 of the Zippo Bassmaster BASSfest Elite presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps at Kentucky Lake bringing 27 pounds, 2 ounces to the scales for a two-day total weight of 51 pounds, 2 ounces.

Evers’ 8-pound Largemouth Lifts Him Into Lead At Zippo BASSfest

PARIS, Tenn. – Oklahoma pro Edwin Evers got the kind of bite Thursday that helps a professional angler separate himself from the field in a tournament like Zippo BASSfest at Kentucky Lake presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps.

But when the mammoth 8-pound largemouth first bit, he wasn’t sure what he had.

“I set the hook on that thing, and I thought I had the bottom,” Evers said. “It was a really cool bite. I didn’t think she would weigh that much, but she was solid.”

The big fish of the day helped Evers put together a five-bass limit that weighed 27 pounds, 2 ounces and pushed him into the lead with a two-day total of 51-2. Michigan superstar Kevin VanDam is second with 47-14, while Alabama pros Derek Remitz and Tim Horton are next with 47-4 each.

Evers’ 8-pounder was the biggest fish of the day and the biggest of the event so far. The fish also helped him claim the $2,000 Rigid Industries big-bass jackpot.

Also as the leader on the second day of the tournament, Evers will be awarded the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500.

“I caught that fish from a spot where I had already caught several,” Evers said. “It was mixed in with a bunch of fish, but they weren’t all 8 pounds, like that one.”

Unlike Wednesday, when Evers caught most of his 24-pound limit before 10 a.m., it took a while for him to land the five fish he eventually weighed in Thursday. But once he felt he had enough fish in the livewell, he did some looking around and found good reasons to be excited about the next round.

“I feel great about Saturday,” Evers said. “I found another school today that I’m pretty excited about. I made two casts and caught two giants.”

Evers holds more than a 3-pound lead over VanDam, who came back to the weigh-in site almost two hours early Thursday with a five-fish limit that weighed 24-5. Anglers are allowed to weigh their catch early when they’re concerned the fish may die, and VanDam had at least one fish he said was laboring.

The loss of fishing time didn’t hurt him — even though his bites came slower Thursday than they did on Day 1.

“You just never know on this lake,” VanDam said. “There was a lot less current today, so it didn’t happen as fast for me. I have no idea what’ll happen going forward, but I’ve had two solid days.”

Despite the smaller pro field Saturday, VanDam said heavy local boat traffic could be a factor.

Saturday is a really challenging time on a lake like Kentucky Lake,” VanDam said. “Electronics are so good now that a lot of people know where to fish. You just have to do the best you can.”

The biggest bag of the day – five fish that weighed 28-1 – belonged to Remitz, who is establishing himself as one of the tougher anglers to beat on Tennessee River lakes. After finishing in third place at Lake Guntersville in April, Remitz is in third again, less than 4 pounds out of the lead.

One of Remitz’s largest fish weighed just over 6 pounds and didn’t give up easily.

“The fish just had one hook in the corner of its mouth,” Remitz said. “I couldn’t really get my hand in its mouth, so I just tried to scoop it into the boat. I had him against the boat with one arm, and the hook came out of his mouth. I just used my other hand and dumped him in the boat.

“When that happens and you still land the fish, you know it’s going to be your day.”

The Top 50 anglers will take a break from fishing Friday while those who finished 51st or lower compete in a special Second Chance tournament on nearby Lake Barkley. The Top 10 anglers from the Second Chance event will rejoin the original Top 50 on Kentucky Lake Saturday with only the Top 12 advancing to Sunday’s championship round.

It took 33-9 to make the Top 50 and qualify for the day off on Friday.

Friday’s takeoff will be at 6:15 a.m. from Lick Creek Recreational Area in Dover, Tenn. Weigh-in is scheduled back at the recreational area for 2:30 p.m.

Also, on Friday, the Top 50 anglers will be onsite at the state park for Bassmaster University — fishing seminars given by the pros along with an outdoors expo, a carnival for kids, an arts and crafts show and more. More than 125 national and local exhibitors, including a variety of food and beverage vendors, will be on hand starting at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday. Fishing fans and their families can join in all the fun. All B.A.S.S. events are free.

Also on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., be sure to log on to Bassmaster.com and follow the competition with the new Bassmaster Live on-the-water coverage. Mark Zona and Tommy Sanders from The Bassmasters television show, and B.A.S.S. emcee Dave Mercer will be on-hand with commentary.

McKendree University Maintains Lead At College Wild Card

DOVER, Tenn. — The names atop the scoreboard remain the same while the strategies shifted for the two teams from McKendree University leading the Carhartt College Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops. The tournament is underway through tomorrow on Lake Barkley.

Remaining in first place after two days are Trent Robinson and Jordan Ledbetter with an overall weight of 28 pounds, 11 ounces. Within striking distance are classmates Phillip Germagliotti and Shane Campbell with 28-1.

“We have an early bite, and the late start hurt us,” Campbell said of the team’s effort producing a limit weighing 13-10 after a morning fog delay. “Hopefully it won’t happen again tomorrow.”

The late start affected everyone, especially teams making long runs from the launch site at Lick Creek Recreation Area. Fishing time was cut short for everyone due to a nearly 2-hour fog delay that postponed the official start time of 5:30 a.m.

Robinson and Ledbetter faired better because they are fishing near the launch site. Today’s catch weighing 12-13 keeps them in the lead by the slim margin of 10 ounces.

“Probably what hurt us more was the current generation,” Robinson said. “The moving water seemed to pull the bigger fish out into deeper water.”

That’s not uncommon when bass fishing along shoreline cover during summertime. Moving water created by hydroelectric power generation stimulates baitfish activity. In turn, the bass move deeper to feed.

Robinson and Ledbetter returned to the same area today. They chose not to gamble in search of a more productive pattern for a reason.

“Fishing deep water isn’t our specialty,” Ledbetter said. “We just don’t have the confidence to go there, so it makes more sense for us to stick to our strengths.”

The persistence paid off with the Livingston Lures Leader Award for Day 2 worth $500 in Livingston product.

“We are fishing shallow, but there is nothing special about the stretch of water where we are staying,” Ledbetter said.

He added, “there is so much water here that it makes more sense to us to find a confidence area, stay there and fish hard.”

Tomorrow’s matchup of the Top 20 teams concludes with a new challenge. The collegiate anglers will be joined on Lake Barkley by 74 pros competing in the Second Chance Tournament, a spinoff of the Zippo Bassmaster BASSfest presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps.

The Top 13 collegiate teams in the final standings Friday are invited to the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops. The championship is July 9-11 at Lake DuBay on the Wisconsin River.

BFL ALL-AMERICAN BRINGS NATION’S TOP WEEKEND ANGLERS TO KENTUCKY LAKE

BFL ALL-AMERICAN BRINGS NATION’S TOP WEEKEND ANGLERS TO KENTUCKY LAKE

Weekend anglers vie for $120,000, coveted spot in 2015 Forrest Wood Cup

   [print_link]

BUCHANAN, Tenn. (June 4, 2015) – Now in its 31st year, the Walmart Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American will visit Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Buchanan, Tennessee, June 18-20. The top 49 boaters and top 49 co-anglers from across the 24-division BFL circuit will cast for cash prizes of up to $120,000 in the Boater Division and $60,000 in the Co-angler Division, plus an opportunity to compete for the Forrest Wood Cup Aug. 20-23 on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
For 2014 All-American champion Marcus Sykora of Osage Beach, Missouri, winning this tournament was a dream come true.
“In terms of my fishing career, it’s the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me,” Sykora said of his 2014 championship win. “It validated my abilities as an angler and proved to me that hard work and dedication pay off.”
Sykora also said that the victory has improved his ability to mentally prepare for tournaments.
“One of the biggest things I’ve noticed is the confidence boost,” said Sykora. “After winning this tournament you feel like you have the ability to overcome any fishing obstacle no matter how difficult.”
Walmart FLW Tour pro Tom Redington of Royse City, Texas, who won the Rayovac FLW Series event on Kentucky Lake in May, said this year’s All-American should be a great event despite the tournament pressure that Kentucky Lake has seen as of late.
“The fishing could be a little tougher, but it’s still Kentucky and Barkley lakes,” said Redington. “You’ll need a lot of weight each day to be in the hunt for the win.
“Right now the fish are fully in their summer pattern,” continued Redington. “With the activity they’ve seen these past couple of weeks, they will be scattered and suspended offshore. Obviously the ledges are going to be firing on Kentucky, but I could see some anglers going shallow on Barkley as well. The bushes, brush piles and docks rarely disappoint this time of year.
“Baits will be a huge factor in terms of strategy and execution,” Redington said. “If the fish are setting up in schools on top of the ledges, giant spoons, swimbaits and deep-diving crankbaits in shad-related colors will quickly catch a big limit. If the recent tournament action is having a big effect on the fish, the schools could be broken up. In that case fish suspend off the sides of ledges or down their slopes. I’d work a 10-inch worm slowly or stroke a jig to grind out a limit of those fish.”
Redington estimated that a three-day-cumulative weight of 66 pounds will win the tournament.
“There will be a lot of options for the BFL anglers,” said Redington. “It will be exciting to see how the tournament unfolds.”
Anglers will take off from the Paris Landing State Park ramp located at 16055 Highway 79 N. in Buchanan at 7 a.m. each morning. Weigh-in will also be at Paris Landing State Park beginning at 3 p.m. on the first two days of competition. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart, located at 1210 Mineral Wells Ave., in Paris, Tennessee, beginning at 4 p.m.
Fans will also be treated to the FLW Expo at the Walmart in Paris on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. which includes Ranger boat simulators, the opportunity to interact with competing anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.
