MORGAN RETAINS LEAD AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC

MORGAN RETAINS LEAD AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC
Reigning Angler of the Year Takes 1½-Pound Lead In To Fourth and Final Day

[print_link]
ROGERS, Ark. (April 25, 2015) – Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tennessee, caught a five-bass limit weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces Saturday to retain the lead on day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. Morgan’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 39 pounds, 2 ounces gives him a 1-pound, 9-ounce lead as competitors enter the fourth and final day of competition in the event that featured 154 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
“Today was extraordinarily tough,” said Morgan, whose numerous career accolades include only one previous win on the FLW Tour, which came on Beaver Lake in 2007. “I caught my first fish around 9:30 a.m., then my second around noon. I caught my third keeper just five minutes later, and then in the last 30 minutes of the day I caught my last two. Just like yesterday I only caught five fish all day long and it was a grind.”
Morgan said that he is all out of the bed fish after catching them on the first two days of competition and that Saturday was all about junk fishing. Sunday will be more of the same.
“I’ve used a hodge podge of baits all week,” Morgan said. “I’ve caught them on a Zoom Finesse Worm, on a spinnerbait, on a Zoom Z-Craw and on a War Eagle jig. I caught a couple of fish this week on a buzzbait, too, but nothing that I weighed in. The key for me has just been to cover enough water and make enough casts that by the end of the day I’ve gotten five.
Tomorrow, anybody in this top-10 can legitimately win this tournament. You’re going to have to have one big bite to win this thing – if somebody can catch a four- or five-pounder, that’s going to be golden.
“I like having the lead, because that means that someone can beat me by just a little bit tomorrow and I can still win,” Morgan went on to say. “It’s been a long time since I won one of these (FLW Tour events). I’ve had a lot of second place finishes, but I really, really want to get a W.”
The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition Sunday on Beaver Lake are:
1st:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 15 bass, 39-2

MORGAN GRABS LEAD AFTER DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC

MORGAN GRABS LEAD AFTER DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC
Tennessee’s Dunkin Wins Co-Angler Title, $20,000
 [print_link]
ROGERS, Ark. (April 24, 2015) – The weather threw anglers another curveball Friday morning at the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. After cold and wind greeted anglers on Thursday, heavy rainfall and lightning was the story today, prompting FLW Tournament Director Bill Taylor to delay takeoff 45 minutes due to the lightning and low visibility.

After the morning storm passed, 154 anglers embarked on day two of the four-day competition. After starting the day in 15th place, pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tennessee, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 15 pounds, 7 ounces to vault to the top of the leaderboard in the competition, hosted by the Rogers Convention and Visitors Bureau, that features the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
Morgan’s two-day cumulative total of 10 bass weighing 28 pounds, 9 ounces gives him a slim 11-ounce cushion over second place, former Forrest Wood Cup Champion Darrel Robertson of Jay, Oklahoma , who has weighed 10 bass totaling 27-14.
“I caught my fifth fish on my very last cast of the day,” said Morgan, the reigning back-to-back FLW Tour Angler of the Year winner. “The rain delay this morning hurt me bad because I was in the first flight to check in today. It was storming and nasty, but the fish were biting.
“I’m mostly spawn fishing and looking for bedders,” Morgan continued. “All of the fish that I had marked are gone, though. I came in with around 15 marked. I caught 10 keepers yesterday and five today, so I’m going to have to start from scratch (tomorrow).”
The top 20 pros that made the Buck Knives Cut and will fish Saturday on Beaver Lake are:
1st:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 10 bass, 28-9
2nd:         Darrel Robertson, Jay, Okla., 10 bass, 27-14

Overall there were 601 bass weighing 1,094 pounds, 6 ounces caught by 147 pros Friday. The catch included 87 five-bass limits.
Pro Drew Benton of Panama City, Florida, has his day one weight disqualified from the tournament Friday for violating FLW Tour rule No. 13, which contains provisions regarding permitted fishing locations. Rose finished in 142nd place with five bass weighing 8 pounds even. Loeffelman weighed one bass totaling 1 pound, 12 ounces and finished in 141st place in the co-angler division.

Proctor, Team South Carolina Win Southern Divisional

Proctor, Team South Carolina Win Southern Divisional

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Familiar water and tidal fishing knowledge paid off for South Carolina’s John Proctor, the overall winner Friday of the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Divisional held on the Pee Dee River Basin.

Proctor’s winning weight totaled 34 pounds, 11 ounces in a tournament separated by mere ounces all three days. Kentucky’s Mark Pierce finished second with 30-4, followed by Alabama’s Kyle Glasgow with 26-2.

Proctor’s win centers around a fishing tale that is actually real. He fished during practice with a hookless soft plastic jerkbait to avoid spooking spawning bass. Oddly, one fish took the bait and refused to shake free.

“She jumped out of the water, I got a good look and knew I had to go back the next day,” he said.

Proctor, a member of the Conway Bassmasters, went sleepless on competition eve for good reason. He couldn’t wait to go back and try his luck to catch the bass. He returned and caught the fish, weighing 7 pounds, 9 ounces.

That bass proved vital to the win and then some. Proctor received a bonus for catching the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass of the tournament.

Proctor targeted a dike protecting a marina all three days. He said the draw for the spawning females was a hard, sandy bottom created when the marina was dredged.

“That’s local knowledge, and the fish use those areas to spawn,” he said. “There is also deeper water in the harbor bordered by the firm bottom.”

Proctor gained new knowledge even though he is considered a local expert. He discovered the best success for spawning happens on a rising tide.

“The spawning females stay longer because high tide keeps the beds underwater,” he observed. “They are more aggressive and willing to bite.”

Another lesson learned is what happens during a falling tide.

“You can find the beds easier because they are nearly out of the water,” he said.

That’s how he located the bass anchoring the win. During practice he did not see the bed, although he returned later in the day to find it.

Proctor targeted spawning bass for another reason. He claims the recent new moon sparked a major migration. Waves of bass moved from the river channel into the shallow basin.

“That gave me a lot of confidence,” he said. “I felt like when the fishing slowed it would improve when another wave moved shallow to spawn.”

To catch his winning weight, Proctor relied on a rotation of three lures. Those were a weightless Senko, a shaky head and a Zoom Baby Brush Hog. He made casts to the spawning beds to coax fish off the beds.

The contestants qualified from local bass clubs and state championships. As the top angler from South Carolina, Proctor advances to the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be held this fall. The following high finishers from the following states will join him: Mark Pierce, Tennessee; Roger Thomas, North Carolina; Lance Freeman, Kentucky; Kyle Glasgow Jr., Alabama; Wayne Black, Florida; and Brad Durden, Georgia.

The tournament included a competition between states as well. Each team had 14 anglers with their cumulative weight counting toward the total. South Carolina won with 288 pounds, 9 ounces. Alabama took second place with 242-11, followed by Georgia with 227-12. Florida followed with 219-1 and North Carolina placed fifth with 218-10. Tennessee finished with 213-10 and Kentucky claimed seventh place with 199-9.

South Carolina received a Triton 189 TrX rigged with a Mercury outboard, Lowrance electronics and a MotorGuide trolling motor. The complete package is valued at $33,340.

State championship high school teams competed alongside the adults to hone their skills. The cumulative weight caught was added to the overall score of the state team. Carter McNeil and Tucker Smith represented Abbeville High School to win the title for South Carolina. The team’s overall weight was 17-11.

2012 BASSMASTER ELITE SERIES ANGLER OF THE YEAR TO REPRESENT TWO OF THE OLDEST AND MOST-TRUSTED NAMES IN FISHING

 [print_link]

Plano, IL (April 24, 2015) – Lake Quivera, Kansas angler, Brent Chapman is a popular man these days.  With nearly 100,000 likes on his Facebook page, a 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year title, 13 Bassmaster Classic qualifications, four Bassmaster tournament wins, 32 top-ten finishes and $1.65 million in earnings under his belt, one might conclude the man would have an ego to match his resume.

Incorrect.

Like the high school prom king elected by his peers because he’s a genuinely swell guy who considers the needs of others alongside his own, Chapman’s popularity comes not only from what he has accomplished as a professional angler, but also from who he is – a driven and detail-oriented husband and father who successfully balances the demands of a professional fishing career with his love for family and passion for all things outdoors.

Unlike various other superstars who actively promote a public side of their celebrity and shield a private one, Chapman doesn’t separate the two in his social media presence.  “My roles as husband and father are the biggest parts of who I am,” says Chapman, whose Facebook page looks a lot like yours and mine – complete with day-to-day family posts and pics – but also including ample instances of angling insights and ingenuity.  “I share what’s genuine,” Chapman continues. “I believe people appreciate seeing that.”

Plano Synergy certainly does.  The parent company to the time-trusted Plano and Frabill tackle brands has recently added Chapman to their Pro Staff.

“Protecting passions is what we do at Plano,” says Plano Synergy Marketing and Pro Staff Coordinator, Justina Whalen, referring to the company’s focus on delivering the products that organize and protect outdoorspeople’s valuable gear.  “Our products help pros like Brent function at maximum efficiency, while also making it easier for average anglers to make the most of their precious time on the water with family or friends,” she adds.

“Brent is a fabulous fit to represent our brands, not only because of his tournament accomplishments or his exceptional work ethic, but also because he lives and breathes both the competition and recreational sides of fishing.”

Chapman, a self-described type-A personality whose formula for tournament success includes copious quantities of preparation, science, organization and efficiency, feels the love, too.

“All of the work and preparation that go into fishing a tournament is at risk when gear isn’t protected, organized and accessible,” says Chapman, who has used Plano and Frabill products to increase his angling efficiency and enjoyment since childhood.  “Whether I’m grinding the clock looking for an upgrade during the last 30 minutes of a tournament or spending a precious morning with my kids down at the pond, my Plano tackle storage products help make the most of every second on the water.”

The Cashion Fishing Rods Spring Team Bass Mini Trail Qualifier #4 at Falls Lake went off without a hitch! 31 teams fished it out for the top spot! The weather was great..wait a minute! We did have a hitch..the bass knew we were there and they paid very little attention to us! The winds were light, the air temps ranged from 58 to 80 and the water level was ok. Water temps averaged 70. Either the fish are still bedding or are transitioning back to deeper water after the spawn or they just plain ain’t hungry! The bite was really off compared to a week ago. WHEELER LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC

WHEELER LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC
South Carolina’s Thompkins Paces Co-Anglers
[print_link]
ROGERS, Ark. (April 23, 2015) – A cold and blustery morning greeted anglers this morning for the start of the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. After the field of 154 anglers had crossed the weigh-in stage, pro Jacob Wheeler of Indianapolis, Indiana, stood alone atop the leaderboard after bringing a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 15 pounds, 14 ounces. Wheeler will begin day two with a slim 5-ounce lead in the four-day event, hosted by the Rogers Convention and Visitors Bureau, that features the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I went out with a game plan today and stuck with it,” said Wheeler, the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup Champion. “I caught a couple of key fish and really just had the right bites today. I got lucky with a nice 4-pounder, and that was the difference maker for me.”
Wheeler said that he caught eight keepers throughout the day on four different baits. He said three of his fish were caught by sight-fishing, including the 4-pounder.
“The fish that are on the beds here are very moody. One day they’re ready to bite, and then the next day they are not. I have five or six more fish that I think are 3½- to 4-pounders marked, so if I can catch them throughout the next few days I should be able to weigh a good bag.
“I’m fishing a 20-mile stretch of the lake and I’m running to a lot of different spots,” Wheeler continued. “I’m trying to keep my options open and just fish the conditions. Tomorrow is just another day. Hopefully I can catch a few more that keep me near the top of the leaderboard and in contention.”

Tennessee Angler Has Ounces Lead At Nation Southern Divisional

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Only ounces separate Mark Pierce from second-place angler John Proctor going into the final round of the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Divisional underway on the Pee Dee River Basin.

Ounces might separate the leader today and the winner tomorrow. However, include pounds in the equation of who will be declared the overall champion.

Pierce, of Kentucky, has the lead with 22 pounds, 13 ounces. Just 12 ounces behind is Day 1 leader Proctor, of South Carolina. Three pounds behind Proctor is fifth-place angler Hayes Hudson with 19-4. Take away the 4-11 big bass caught today by Pierce, and you have a wide-open race.

Pierce earned earned a $250 bonus as the Livingston Lures Leader Award on Day 2.

Proctor, of nearby Conway, S.C., has the edge with experience on this challenging tidal fishery. Pierce, of Radcliff, Ky., is applying a practical approach to his strategy.

“I never fished a tidal river before this tournament,” said the Montgomery Bass Club member. “What I discovered is a lot of black, stained water that I’m not accustomed to fishing.”

By the process of elimination and intuition, he found something different.

“The tide does not affect where I am fishing,” he added. “And it has plenty of current with 2 feet of visibility.”

Even familiar conditions require a persistent presentation for Pierce, who is fishing for the Tennessee team.

“I’m having to grind it out because the fish are so spread out,” he said.

Even so, consistency is on his side. That is a plus in this tournament with narrow weight margins across the scoreboard. Yesterday Pierce weighed 11-7 compared to his catch weighing 11-6 today.

With the scores so close and much at stake, Pierce declined to disclose his location and lures. The same applied to runner-up Proctor, although he abandoned a bed-fishing pattern in favor of expanding his fishing area.

That’s a good idea on a tournament fishery with six river systems available to the competition. The Pee Dee River Basin includes the Sampit, Great Pee Dee, Waccamaw, Black, Santee and Little Pee Dee rivers. The area covers 232 river miles.

South Carolina widened its lead in the competition between states. The team’s cumulative weight is 187-11. Alabama is second with 164-5 and Georgia has 157-7 for third place. Tennessee is fourth with 147-6.

The winning state team is awarded a Triton 189 TrX rigged with a Mercury outboard, Lowrance electronics and a MotorGuide trolling motor. The complete package is valued at $33,340.

The contestants from seven states qualified from local bass clubs and state championships to at the Nation Southern Divisional. Each team has 14 members. Two of them are high school students taking part in another competition also concluding tomorrow.

State championship high school teams are competing alongside the adults to hone their skills. Cumulative weight caught is added to the overall score of the state team. The winning team receives $500, with $250 going to the runner-up.

Leading the high school rankings is Jake Mims and Jace Garrett of Alexander High School. The Georgia anglers caught 8-9 to take the lead. Caden Watson and Cole Sams of Tennessee are second with 7-15. The anglers represent Marion County High School.

Each adult angler winning his state here advances to the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship in the fall.

Takeoff for the final day, Friday, of the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Divisional will take place at Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown at 6:30 a.m. The weigh-in will occur at the same location at 2:30 p.m.

Visit Bassmaster.com for live daily coverage of the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Divisional.

The tournament host is Georgetown County.
