Tharp raises Red River Cup

EverStart pro wins year-end championship, $500,000

Brett Carlson August, 18 2013 21:19:00

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. – Two years ago, Randall Tharp fished a nearly-flawless Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Ouachita but took second to Scott Martin and a big school of offshore bass. Tharp prepared for the 2013 Cup knowing that deep fish weren’t an option on the Red River. Everything was shallow and positioned around dense cover – right in the honey badger’s wheelhouse.

Coming in to the tournament, Tharp had located a handful of productive backwater areas in Pool 5. He was convinced that the bigger bites that came from the main river were random, whereas the backwater kickers, while extremely difficult, could be patterned. On day one, he learned several other pros had found those same areas and he was forced to regroup and reassess. By Sunday, he was fishing two spots – one a finger off the river located three miles north of Red River South Marina and one a lily pad field adjacent to the marina.

Tharp started each of the last three days on the finger, one of the few areas lined with homes. He’d throw a bluegill-colored 3/8-ounce 4×4 Swim Jig with a Strike King Rage Craw Trailer (green pumpkin) on the side that featured a mud bank. Once the sun got up around 9 a.m., he’d bounce over and fish the longer riprap stretch with a Lucky Craft 1.5 squarebill crankbait (TO color).

After losing three quality fish on the swim jig yesterday, Tharp instinctively opted for a frog on the mud bank and that gut feeling proved correct as he caught one of his three big fish on his very first cast with a Spro Bronzeye Junior 60 (white with orange tails).

In the afternoon, he would return to the backwater area near the marina, which ironically was within walking distance of the campground where Tharp and his wife Sara stayed for the week. That backwater featured some of the thickest vegetation in the system and it’s the area that coughed up most of the 18-8 from day one. Today, it produced the other two kickers, these coming on a black and blue Bronzeye 65. Tharp would pick apart certain areas with his Power-Poles down, saturating stretches with repeated casts.

“On the last day of prepractice I caught 20 pounds in about 30 minutes in that area and knew I was on something special.”

Early in the week, Tharp was surprised at how few bites he was getting. Instead of the 40 or 50 he received in practice, he was now down to a dozen or so per day. In fact, he was fishless for the first three hours of the tournament. Today he caught only seven keepers, but they weighed 14 pounds even, more than enough to fend off a hard-charging Jacob Wheeler. Tharp’s total weight for the week was 53 pounds, 2 ounces.

“The key this week was the swim jig, but today I wanted bigger hooks, bigger line and a bigger rod and that’s where the frog came in.”

Six years ago the EverStart pro was a contractor and a successful regional fisherman in north Alabama. Now with an FLW Tour win on Okeechobee and a Forrest Wood Cup title he’s regarded as one of the best shallow sticks on the planet. For winning the most lucrative tournament in bass fishing, Tharp earned $500,000. Fittingly, he couldn’t wait to have the Cup awarded to him and instead swiftly grabbed it himself after hearing his name called as champion.

“Last year when the schedule came out and I saw that the Cup was going back to the Red River and Shreveport, this was all I could think about; I knew that it was going to be my time. A lot of the lakes we go to don’t afford me the opportunity to win. But this is the way I like to fish. ”

Castaway Anglers – Leesville Lake Club Tournament Results – 8/17/2013

Micropterus_dolomieu2
We had a great tournament yesterday at Leesville Lake. Never thought we would be wearing sweat shirt all day in the middle of August, but we were. It rained off and on but no real down pours which was a blessing. Congrats to the Funks for the win with 15.86 lbs. and having big fish with a 4.66 lb. largemouth. Farmer/Kluender took second with 12.80 lbs. and Eubank/Keane finished third with 10.64 lbs. Congrats to everybody who fished with Castaway Anglers yesterday and this year. I will get an email out to let everybody know who made the Classic next month on Leesville and Smith Mt. (September 14th & 15th). The standings for 2013 are attached. Thanks.

Corcoran crushes it – 2013 Co Angler Champion – Forrest Wood Cup – Red River (Aug. 15-18, 2013)

Corcoran crushes it

Cup rookie wins co-angler title by 7-9 to make dream come ture

16.Aug.2013 by Kyle Wood

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. – Most anglers dream from a young age of one day having the shot to claim the Forrest Wood Cup title. A dream that only a handful of those anglers will ever fulfill. At 23 years old, however, Theo Corcoran made the dream he has had since he was 5 come true in an emotional victory to claim the 2013 Forrest Wood Cup title for the co-angler field.

“I can’t even think right now,” said Corcoran about his victory. “This is a dream come true, or at least the start of one. I have wanted this since I was 5 and watching Jimmy Houston on TV and my mom would take me out fishing.”

Before the tournament even began it was common knowledge that the Red River wouldn’t kick out quality fish with ease. Adding to that was the fact many of the pros would be fishing shallow making it tougher for the guys in the back to get big bites. That’s when Corcoran put his head down and got to work.

His first day partner was Spencer Shuffield, who spent much of his day flipping shallow cover. Shuffield was punching his rig on the inside edge of the cover leaving Corcoran to work the outer edge. It didn’t take long for Corcoran to flip up a solid limit to the tune of 14 pounds, 13 ounces and putting him in the lead by nearly 5 pounds.

“I just wanted to get five little ones today,” the Kansas City, Mo., resident said. “I tried not to think about what weight I needed to catch or anything, I just went fishing.”

Today, Corcoran was paired with the 2013 TBF National Champion Mark Daniels Jr. who was making the run down to the bottom end of pool 4. When they pulled up to the first spot Corcoran began throwing a frog. Just a few casts later he had a 4-pounder eat the frog at the boat and he flipped the giant in. Seconds later, Daniels Jr. set the hook and his 1-ounce tungsten weight went flying right at Corcoran’s face, cutting his eyebrow pretty bad.

“Marks 1-ounce weight cracked me good. He started freaking out and I just told him to get me a towel and some super glue. After we got it patched up I went right back to fishing. And I think it helped take my mind off of stressing about catching a limit to taking it one fish at a time.”

Palaniuk runs down title – 2013 Elite Series Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown at St. Lawrence River – Bassmaster.com

Palaniuk runs down title

Brandon Palaniuk

James Overstreet
Idaho pro Brandon Palaniuk made miles matter to reach his annually-renewing goal – to never miss a Classic.

WADDINGTON, N.Y. – Brandon Palaniuk wanted – needed, in his mind – to find a way into the 2014 Bassmaster Classic, the world championship of bass fishing.

“I don’t care about the money, just give me the Classic berth,” Palaniuk said after he led on the first day of the Aug. 8-11 Evan Williams Bourbon Showdown at St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, N.Y.

The instant qualification that comes with a Bassmaster Elite win was the only unlocked door left to him.

Sunday, the 25-year-old pro from Rathdrum, Idaho, walked right through that door. Palaniuk’s prize included $100,000 as well as the Classic qualification he coveted. The 2014 Classic will be his fourth consecutive appearance.

“It’s been one of my goals since I started (the Elite Series) to never miss a Classic. The Classic is our Super Bowl, so you don’t want to miss it,” he said after his win. “To be able to go out and have a shot at hoisting the Classic trophy is what every kid, every guy out here fishing, dreams of.”

Now a two-time Bassmaster Elite Series champion, Palaniuk won the Showdown wire-to-wire, and by a margin of 7 pounds, 8 ounces. His total weight of 88 pounds, 12 ounces of smallmouth bass bested the 81-4 total produced by Showdown runner-up Jonathon VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich.

A hand’s-down win is Palaniuk’s style. In April 2012, when he took his first Elite trophy, the margin was 11-14. He won that one in wire-to-wire fashion, too.
