 Bedrug Bed Liners

Bedrug and Team Top This have joined forces to sponsor a team of professional anglers.

“We are looking forward to participating in a great industry led by two premier organizations, FLW and B.A.S.S.,” says Bedrug National Sales Manager Mike Timmons. “Partnering with a team of true professionals fits well with our company and brand.”

The team will include:

Kevin Stewart is a third-year pro on the Walmart FLW Tour and participant in the Southern B.A.S.S. Opens in 2015.

Cody Meyer has been one of the most consistent anglers on the Walmart FLW Tour since his first year in 2009.  In 2014, Meyer finished runner-up in the Angler of the Year race by only a few points.

Jimmy Reese, another Californian, is no stranger to the national tournament scene. After primarily a regional tournament career, Reese is going all in this year as he works to become one of the top anglers on the Walmart FLW Tour.

Mark Lassagne, another new team member, will be competing in the Rayovac FLW Series events and B.A.S.S. Southern Opens.

Billy Hines is also fishing the Rayovac FLW Series and B.A.S.S. Southern Opens.

Chuck Kavros is the president of Top This and is fishing his second season on the Walmart FLW Tour.

Spotted Bass Breaking Hearts At The Alabama River

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Tearful stories about big fish being lost are common at any bass tournament. But woeful tales were legion on Thursday at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #2 presented by Allstate on the Alabama River.

Even anglers that caught heavy limits lamented that they lost big bass that would have allowed them to cull up in weight. This is due mainly to the notoriously hard fighting Coosa River spotted bass that teem in the Alabama River where the second of three 2015 Southern Opens is taking place this week.

Tournament leader Dustin Connell, a local Alabama angler, avoided the lost bass jinx. His 22 pounds, 3 ounces of spotted bass was the only limit to top 20 pounds.

Connell is a hot stick that regularly fattens his bank account by fishing tournaments in this area of Alabama. He culled through 10 bass today to catch his impressive limit.

“I did about what I expected to do today,” Connell said. “I feel good about tomorrow.”

If Connell follows up with more limits that exceed 20 pounds, he is likely to run away with this one. However, he said that there are other competitors fishing his water. Also, that the water “dirtied up more today, and the bite might change tomorrow.”

The other anglers fishing on the pro side of this event are hoping that happens.

Alabama’s Jamie Horton had a tough practice, catching limits in the 11- to 12-pound class. That might get a small check here, but it won’t get a sniff at the Top 12 cut to fish Saturday.

Today Horton lugged a bulging sack to the scales. It held five fat spotted bass that totaled 19 pounds, 5 ounces. The largest of these weighed 4 pounds, 15 ounces. That is a seriously big spotted bass.

Horton’s outboard never had a chance to cool down today. He said he fished 60 different places to land the seven bass that he boated. Why did Horton catch bigger spotted bass today than in practice?

“I stayed away from my better stuff in practice,” he said.

Although Horton is looking forward to fishing tomorrow, he said that the water had “muddied up a lot today.” He’s not sure if that will negatively impact his fishing.

Drew Benton, a Florida angler, chose to concentrate on largemouth bass. His day got off to a bad start when his rear running light was accidentally knocked off by another competitor’s boat prior to takeoff. B.A.S.S. rules state that both running lights must be on before any boat is allowed to take off in the morning.

Benton believes the glitch may have cost him a few good bass because he is on a morning bite. Despite the late start, Benton boated an 18-pound, 5-ounce limit by 9:30 a.m. Then he left his fish and looked for productive water elsewhere.

North Carolina’s Taylor Schneider leads the co-angler side of the tournament with a three-bass limit that weighed 9 pounds, 15 ounces. All of his bass were largemouth. The heaviest, 6 pounds, 5 ounces, was the big bass of the day for the co-anglers.

“I caught the big one in the first 15 minutes,” Schneider said. “I was about to jump out of the boat when that bass jumped.”

Take off for Day 2 Friday will be at 6 a.m. CT at Cooters Pond. The weigh-in Friday will take place at the same location at 2 p.m. CT.

The final weigh-in Saturday will take place at Bass Pro Shops in Prattville, Ala., at 3 p.m. CT.

The local host for this event is the City of Prattville.

Keep It Simple, Make It Fun by Bruce Callis

[print_link]

Our passion is fishing. It’s time to go fishing and we load up our gear. If we are bank fishing, it may be a couple poles and a bag of bait, or it could be 15 poles and all the bait the boat will hold. But what about when we are going to take our kids or the neighbor’s kid fishing? What do we do then? How do we pass on our passion and make it a fun day for them?
The day has to be fun, or they will never want to go again, or at least not for a long time. But what do we do to make it happen? Do we just take them out and let them throw topwater frogs back into the lily pads? Do we give them a drop shot to fish in 20 feet of water? Do we expect them to do like us and fish from sun up to dark? What do we do? There are some basic rules that will make sure they have a fun day out with us.
First, we need to make sure they have fun. Don’t expect them to want to stay all day. They may go out and only last an hour before they are ready to go home. Those long days will come later, but don’t get upset that they are done with the adventure. Don’t plan on being out all day. This adventure is theirs; we are along for the ride to help make it great.
Second, my adventure is not setting the hook, but getting his or her hook set into a fish. Notice, I said their hook, not mine. I have seen dads and moms who were too busy with their fishing to notice that the little one was miserable. We want to pass on our passion, and that means putting ever effort into making their day the most awesome time ever. I took my nephew out when he was 6; he caught 2 bass and was done. I asked to make sure he didn’t want to stay longer, but he was done. We were there on a perfect day, the bass were biting good, a dream day, but he had had his fun. Back to shore, we loaded everything back into the car, and home we went. We talked on the way home about his day. A great day, and I had hoped to fish longer with him, but I wanted him to want to come back again, so we called it a day.
Thirdly, try to do what the fish want, and go for the bite, not the big catch. A child that is busy watching fish eat their bait is a child that will want to come back again. My youngest daughter went with me fishing for the first time in many years. I had been out and found the fish were hitting topwater frogs. While this is not a great way for smaller kids, it works great for older ones. We went out and she was throwing a white Zoom Horny Toad and the bass were killing it. She missed a lot at first, but with a little hint, she started landing them. She stayed for a good 5 hours that first day, her choice. Now she is my fishing buddy. We may go out for only an hour at times, but it is quality time.
Fourthly, go simple. A simple rod that they can use, a hook and bobber and you are set. Some worms to put on the hook and let the bream, crappie, or whatever keep them busy. Give them a part in the day by letting them do things. Be responsible for carrying the tackle box, or the snacks. This is what will bring them back. A child’s first fish, no matter how small is the biggest fish of a lifetime.
A child will remember these experiences, good or bad. They will want to do the good things again, so no matter how the fishing was, make it fun, make it good. Every child is different, and these are guides are for you to learn from, and customize to your child. My hope is that you have the most amazing day fishing with your child and they become your fishing buddy, and they beat you like mine does.
Got another suggestion, a hint or tip to share, write it in the comments for others, and myself to learn from.

Jason and Earl Adams Win Region Four Virginia Bass TBF SML April 11th Results

Quick update from our April 11th SML tournament.

44 boats again joined us for a warm, but breezy day on SML.

Anglers found fish in all three stages of the spawn with water temps in the low to mid 60’s.

This made for tough conditions and the results proved as such with over half the field failing to weigh in a single fish. Jason and Earl Adams however continued their hot streak bring a nice mixed bag to the scales the tipped the scale to a shade less than 20lbs!!

We paid 6 places with a few hundreths over 10lbs making the money.

Full results and updated Federation standings will post tomorrow.

Our next tournament is right around the corner on April 18th at Claytor Lake….see you all

there!!
