BIRGE LEADS PROS INTO FINAL DAY OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LEWIS SMITH LAKE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE
Oklahoma Rookie Takes Near Four-Pound Lead In To Final Day
[print_link]
JASPER, Ala. (March 28, 2015) – FLW Tour rookie Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma, caught a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday to extend his lead in a stacked top-20 field that included five former Angler of the Year winners and four Forrest Wood Cup champions. Birge now holds a 3-pound, 11-ounce edge over his closest competitor, legendary pro Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, at the Walmart FLW Tour at Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude. The field is now cut to the final 10 anglers as they enter the fourth and final day of competition in the event that featured 154 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
“I will probably not be getting much sleep tonight,” said Birge, who finished in 13th place at the FLW Tour season opener at Lake Toho just three weeks ago. “I had no expectations coming in to this event, and I had no idea that this tournament would turn out the way it has so far. It’s been an awesome week. I’m fishing just like I do back home – shallow-water bushes – and just having fun.”
Birge stuck to his largemouth pattern that he has had dialed in all week, even when many of his competitors chose to target the abundant Lewis Smith Lake spotted bass in the morning. He caught two largemouth very early in the day, then another eight to 10 keepers in the afternoon as the temperatures warmed.
“The spotted bass that I have been catching have been small, so I figured that I would try to catch a couple of largemouth early and get a few bonus fish,” Birge said. “I was extremely fortunate to catch two of them early and it calmed me down. I knew the bite would turn on around noon, and it did.”
Birge said that he stuck with the baits he has been working with all week, catching three largemouth off of beds with a lizard, two on a frog and the rest of his keepers on a Santone Lures buzzbait.
“I think with a near 4-pound lead, the plan for tomorrow is to go try and catch five spotted bass right away in the morning and get my mind right,” said Birge. “Once I get five keepers in the boat, I’m going to go sit on my largemouth and make them bite. All that I can do is fish for the biggest bag that I and we’ll see what happens.”
The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition Sunday on Lewis Smith Lake are:
1st:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 15 bass, 54-8

Western Carolina University Earns College Series Eastern Regional Win

Western Carolina University Earns College Series Eastern Regional Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three patterns helped Western Carolina University prevail despite adverse weather conditions and a competitive field in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops. Austin Neary and Alex Frazier targeted spawning fish while also fishing nearby docks and rocks with dropshots and jerkbaits to bring in a three-day total of 42 pounds, 6 ounces and take the Eastern Regional title.

“All of our areas setup up for all three patterns,” Neary said. “It would be like a windy marina, so we could drop shot and jerkbait and then catch spawners off bed.”

As practice for the Eastern Regional came to a close, fish flooded the banks in an attempt to find a mate and make a bed to spawn. The first day of competition on Thursday saw partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures and the spawn and dock bite were on. The second day, Friday, brought a nasty cold front to the area and the jerkbait bite picked up with a few spawners still being picked off. Then on the final day Saturday the temperatures dropped to the 30s, and it took all three patterns for Western Carolina to pull off the win.

After B.A.S.S. College Tournament Manager Hank Weldon noted the excitement that Neary exhibited when coming to the stage and mentioned Frazier must be the calmer of the two, Frazier stated, “I could probably run through a brick wall right now.”

The excitement was evident from both Neary and Frazier as the two took the Eastern Regional in Frazier’s first at bat and what would have been Neary’s final college event had they not qualified for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship with their win.

“Financially, I had already decided I wouldn’t be able to make it to the Wild Card, so this was it for me,” Neary said of the June event that will qualify more college teams for the National Championship.

Bother and sister Chelsey and Kristopher Queen of Bethel University finished second in the event, bringing in 40 pounds, 11 ounces over the course of three days.

“I’m excited we’re going to the National Championship,” Chelsey said. “I hate we lost out to these guys, but I want to congratulate them. But I guarantee you nobody had more fun than we did out on the water”

The Queens are the first brother-sister team to ever qualify for the National Championship.

Finishing third and also qualifying for the National Championship were Day 2 leaders from Appalachian State University, Kelly Johnson and Jeremy Gilley, who brought in 39-14 for three days.

The remainder of the Top 17 teams from the Eastern Regional will also move on to the National Championship to be held later this summer on a body of water to be announced within the next few weeks.

The Livingston Lures Leader award at the Eastern Regional went to Appalachian State University’s Johnson and Gilley for leading on Day 2.

Cole Blythe’s 6-pound, 10-ounce big bass from Day 1 earning University of North Carolina-Charlotte the Carhartt Big Bass honors for the event.

UNCC’s Blythe and John Auten also won the Bass Pro Nitro Big Bag award for the event with their Day 1 single-day weight of 16 pounds, 12 ounces.

Booyah Pad Crasher Frog Review

Walker Smith

This topwater frog is soft, durable and attractively priced

If seeing a big bass explode on a topwater frog doesn’t get your heart pumping, you need to get your pulse checked. Seriously—make an appointment with a doctor and get that pump station of yours looked at. That’s just not normal.

Since the beginning of last fall, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time tinkering with the Booyah Pad Crasher Frog. After countless casts into grass beds, underneath docks and any other shallow cover I can find, I’ve been able to learn a lot about this frog and its most effective applications.

Appalachian State University Moves Into First In Carhartt College Series Eastern Regional

Jeremy Gilley (left) and Kelly Johnson of Appalachian State University weighed in a two-day total of 28 pounds, 15 ounces to take the Day 2 lead Friday in the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops held on Lake Norman out of Charlotte, N.C.

Appalachian State University Moves Into First In Carhartt College Series Eastern Regional

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Not rain, nor wind, nor cold could slow Appalachian State University’s Kelly Johnson and Jeremy Gilley who added the heaviest bag Friday weighing 15 pounds, 12 ounces to their Thursday weight of 13 pounds, 3 ounces to take the 2015 Carhartt College Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops lead by 6 ounces on Lake Norman.

Johnson and Gilley have two patterns to thank for their 28 pound, 15 ounce two-day total which has them currently sitting on top of the leaderboard.

“We’re on two different deals right now,” Johnson said. “We have a shallow pattern going and a deeper pattern also.”

Ever-changing conditions brought the air temperature down from the 80s to the 40s, all while introducing heavy rain and stiff winds to the area on Friday. As the front blows through, Saturday promises to be even colder, dropping to 25 degrees tomorrow night. Appalachian State will need both of their patterns in order to contend with the changing conditions and hold onto the lead.

“I think we should still be able to catch them doing what we’re doing,” Gilley said. “The weather slowed things down a little today from yesterday and might slow things down even more for tomorrow, but I think we’ll still be able to catch them pretty good.”

This is the first tournament with the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series for Johnson and Gilley who are graduate students at Appalachian State. Although Johnson had never fished the lake before pre-practice, Gilley has a lot of experience on Lake Norman and together the two have pooled their knowledge and a fresh set of eyes to the lake to put themselves in prime position headed into the final day.

For leading after Friday, Appalachian State’s Johnson and Gilley are awarded the Livingston Lures Leader Award, a $250 gift card.

Consistency puts Austin Neary and Alex Frazier of Western Carolina University in second place headed into the final day. With back-to-back performances in the 14-pound range, Neary is hoping to up the ante a bit tomorrow.

“We’ve had some bedding largemouth every day,” Neary said. “We have five or six beds with 6-pounders on them. We’ve caught some of the bucks off of them but haven’t been able to catch the females yet.”

The field was cut today to the Top 20 who will compete one more day on Lake Norman, vying for one of the Top 16 qualifying spots for the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship to be held later this year.

Cole Blythe’s 6-pound, 10-ounce Carhartt Big Bass from Thursday held strong and remains the big bass for the event so far.

UNC-Charlotte’s Cole Blythe and John Auten also hold onto the Bass Pro Nitro Big Bag for the event with their Thursday single-day weight of 16 pounds, 12 ounces.

Bass Pro Shops in Concord will host the Top 20 weigh-in tomorrow starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. You can follow all of Saturday’s action or catch up on what you’ve missed by visiting Bassmaster.com.

Day 2 Remember

Brad Roberts didn’t just catch more weight than his pro. By the time day two was over, the co-angler had weighed in the biggest bag of any angler on the day.

Leading the co-angler side going into the second day of the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Evinrude on Lewis Smith Lake, Roberts sacked a giant 18 pounds, 13 ounces to complete a two-day sweep with an impressive 32-1.

“This feels awesome,” Roberts says. “I could only fish three [FLW Tour] events this year, and I picked this one because it’s a lot like Dale Hollow and Lake Cumberland back home. Obviously, I picked the right one.”

How impressive was what the Faubush, Ky., angler pulled off? His 18-13 beat the biggest pro weight on day two by 9 ounces (Jason Reyes, 18-4), and his 32-1 cumulative weight would have put him in fourth on the pro side after two days.

While most anglers’ weights dropped due to a cold front hitting the area, Roberts managed to increase his weight by alternating from what his pro was doing and using a little family knowledge.

“My dad finished second here as a co-angler a few years back,” Roberts explains. “So I knew a couple things to try from him.”

Fishing with pro Brad Knight today, Roberts keenly watched what Knight was throwing around the shallow spawning flats they were targeting. When Knight was throwing topwater, Roberts fished on the bottom with a floating worm on a Cumberland Pro Lures shaky head. When Knight started throwing a swimbait, Roberts threw a 3/8-ounce Cumberland Pro Lures swim jig for a different look.

“I really watched where he was casting, and if I saw an area where I thought a bed should be I threw at it,” Roberts explains. “I kind of guessed, and I guessed right.”

On day one Roberts was paired with Stephen McKinnie. The two hit main-lake points, and Roberts again bested his pro thanks to a combo of the shaky head and a Yamamoto Senko.

Local Todd Lee of Jasper, Ala., finished runner-up in front of his hometown crowd with 26-12. Cody Hammontree of Flat Rock, Ala., finished third with 23-13.

Top 5 Patterns from Lewis Smith Day 2

While air and water temperatures plummeted on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour event on Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude, the big surprise came in the stability of the fishing patterns amidst such change. Zack Birge found plenty of production on his primary pattern to send him to the top of the leaderboard, and those under him held true to their patterns as well to secure a ticket to day three’s top 20.

Among the biggest surprises was the number of pros who were still able to pluck fish off beds. Most pros that were sight-fishing say the bass are committed to beds and that the cold snap will not run them off at this point in time. Despite the cold, some even found new fish on beds that were not there yesterday.

Click here to read about Birge’s first-place pattern. Here’s how the rest of the top five made it to the weekend.

Walmart FLW Tour day one leader, Drew Benton, weighs 15-1 on day two to earn his place in the top-20 to fish another day.

2nd Place – Drew Benton – 35 pounds, 13 ounces

Despite a solid catch of 15 pounds, 1 ounce today, day-one leader Drew Benton slid back to second place. His species mix today included four largemouths and one spotted bass. Of those, three largemouths came off beds.

“The biggest lesson I learned today is not to try sight-fishing in the morning,” Benton says. “I wasted too much time trying to catch ones that weren’t ready this morning – way too much time. I came back this afternoon and caught some of those. So tomorrow I’m just going fishing to get a limit, then I’ll sight-fish later in the day.”

Benton notes that the cold did not seem to push the fish off the beds. It just made them far more uncooperative.

“They were still there this morning. They just would not bite,” he says. “They were locked and I pestered them as much as could, but they would not eat. Also, those spots are far less affected by the cold – they’re easy. But those largemouths are a different story. Those jokers are so finicky.”

Benton, like other leaders, is confident that despite 30-degree temperatures forecast for Friday night, there will still be sight-fishing opportunities over the weekend.

“Maybe not so much tomorrow,” he says, “but it’s supposed to warm back up Sunday, and if I make it [into the top 10], there should be more on beds to catch.”

Clark Wendlandt shows his kicker fish on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour on Lewis Smith Lake, he weighed 17-5 and will now have to cross his fingers and wait to see if it will be enough to fish another day.

3rd Place – Clark Wendlandt – 33 pounds, 8 ounces

Clark Wendlandt moved up into third place today with a 17-pound, 5-ounce catch, which was made up of three largemouths and two spots.

Wendlandt, too, was able to sight-fish some of his limit off beds today.

“I’m finding them as I go, and I caught three off beds,” Wendlandt says. “I think there are plenty of fish on beds right now, but the hardest part is seeing them. So many of them are bedding so deep.”

Wendlandt is also of the opinion that the bedding activity has just begun and the cold will not do much to hinder nature’s course.

“I think they’re committed to these areas, and they’re not going anywhere until they’re done spawning,” he says. “I’ve got a couple of other patterns that I can use to catch some fish, but going into the weekend I can assure you I will be looking for more fish on beds. In my opinion, the process has started, and this little cold snap isn’t going to hold it up that much.”

4th Place – Tracy Adams – 31 pounds, 12 ounces

Tracy Adams sight-fished one bass off a bed today, but for the most part, he stuck to fishing for suspended fish over 40 or 50 feet of water.

“These fish are close to spawning, but by no means are they on beds,” he says. “I did catch one off a bed today, but the ones I’m catching are on the points leading into those spawning pockets. Sunny, slick conditions would help me a bunch to get the bait where it needs to be.

“I’ll probably fish those suspended fish in the morning and then look in the afternoon,” he adds. “It’s going to get cold, but sight-fishing is not out of the question.”

5th Place – Scott Wiley – 31 pounds, 10 ounces

Scott Wiley moved into fifth place today with a 16-pound, 2-ounce catch.

Wiley’s pattern is very similar to leader Zack Birge’s pattern in that he is fishing shallow bushes and targeting fish that are moving in to spawn.

“I’m sure the fish are moving in to the bushes to spawn, but I’m actually catching them on the outsides of the bushes before they go in,” Wiley says. “I think a few are postspawn, but a majority of them are feeding up on the outsides of the bushes before they go in there to spawn.”

Like others, Wiley notes that the afternoon window is a premium.

“Once that water warms up in the afternoon, the bite improves tremendously,” he adds. “The activity level increases tremendously with just a few degrees warm-up.”

Kentucky’s Roberts Wins Co-Angler Title, $20,000
JASPER, Ala. (March 27, 2015) – Fishing in just his second event as a professional, FLW Tour rookie Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Friday weighing 17 pounds, 14 ounces to take the lead at the Walmart FLW Tour at Lewis Smith Lake presented by Evinrude. With less than six pounds separating first place from 10th place, the tournament is still very much up for grabs as we enter day three of the four-day event, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County, that features 154 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.
Birge’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 36 pounds, 13 ounces gives him a scant 1-pound lead over day one leader Drew Benton of Panama City, Florida, who brought five bass to the scale Friday totaling 15-1, for a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 35-13.
“I didn’t get my first good bite until around 11 a.m. today,” said Birge, who is the reigning Rayovac FLW Series champion. “The sun came out around noon and the water temperature rose about three degrees. Then the fishing gradually got better.
“I caught my first fish in about a foot of water on a frog, way back in the bushes,” Birge continued. “That’s Oklahoma fishing, and that’s what I’m comfortable doing. I’m fishing shallow, flat pockets and flooded bushes.
“I’m throwing a Santone Lures buzzbait and a frog and bouncing back and forth between them. Yesterday they were tearing up the frog, but today they wouldn’t really touch it. I stopped at a creek today where I had caught some fish yesterday on the frog, but I didn’t get bit. Something didn’t feel right, so I went back through with a buzzbait and ended up catching eight keepers.”
Birge said that he caught around 10 keepers Friday, and his five-bass limit that he brought to the scale consisted entirely of largemouth.
Tomorrow I’m going to go and try to catch five spotted bass in the morning and try to take some of the pressure off,” Birge went on to say. “Then, hopefully the sun will come back up and warm the water up a little bit. I’m going to have three rods on my deck tomorrow – a buzzbait, a frog and a drop-shot rig. I hope I can get a few largemouth bites later in the day.”

Top 5 Patterns from Lewis Smith Day 1

While Drew Benton was busy bugging bedding fish for his day-one tournament lead, several others behind him were scoring big with other fishing options on Lewis Smith Lake. Sight-fishing also played a role in the top limits produce by Tracy Adams, Scott Martin and Ish Monroe, but Clayton Batts and Zack Birge both brought in big bags with other patterns.

Click here to read about Benton’s day-one performance at the second Walmart FLW Tour event of 2015, which is presented by Evinrude. Here’s how the rest of the top five got it done.

Pro Clayton Batts couldn't ask for a better way to start the FLW Tour on Lewis Smith Lake; he weighs 19-9.

2nd Place – Clayton Batts 2nd – 19 pounds, 9 ounces

Sight-fishing might be working for some, but today Clayton Batts didn’t have to look at fish on beds for his runner-up catch, which consisted of three largemouths and two spots.

“These were all feeding fish,” Batts reveals. “I have found a few places that have hoards of [blueback] herring all up on the banks, and the bass are just thrashing them – both largemouths and big spots.”

The Georgia pro says there is no question that his pattern is totally herring-driven.

“I can see schools of herring ripping up and down the banks,” he continues. “When the bass bust them up, herring go skipping everywhere. A couple of the bass I’ve caught have herring tails down their throats. And I’m catching them on a typical herring-imitator like they use on other herring lakes.”

The one piece of bad news on Batts’ prolific pattern is that he needs clouds, which is also consistent with the herring vibe.

“As long as it’s cloudy, it’s on,” he says. “If it gets sunny, it sort of dies, and I have to switch baits and work harder to make them bite.”

Pro Zack Birge starting stop number two of the FLW Tour on Lewis Smigh Lake the way he ended stop one on Toho - in the top-10. He weighs 18-15 and should start day two with a boatload of confidence.

3rd Place – Zack Birge – 18 pounds, 15 ounces

Fresh off a Walmart Bass Fishing League win at Grand Lake a week and a half ago, Zack Birge kept his momentum rolling right into Smith Lake, grabbing third place on day one.

Birge was one of just a few anglers who weighed in all largemouths today.

“I spent two days of practice trying to fish for spots, and the first time I went to the bank I caught a 5-pound largemouth,” Birge says. “That was my sign. That’s the way I like to fish, so I committed to that style of fishing.”

Birge revealed that he is fishing super shallow in stained “largemouth water” and has no intentions of changing.

“I believe they’re coming shallow,” he says of the largemouths. “I have three similar places. I hit two of them today and did not even touch the third. The way they are set up in these places is similar, and when I get in the right stuff I can catch two or three in a row, which is encouraging to me. I might go awhile until I hit another wad of them, but the bites definitely come all together, and I like that.”

4th Place – Tracy Adams – 18 pounds, 9 ounces

Tracy Adams relied on sight-fishing to corral his first limit on day one, but then discovered another pattern that was working within the same bedding areas.

“I ran my first set of beds and caught three largemouths and two spots sight-fishing,” Adams says. “I felt pretty good with what I had, so I started trying some other stuff and sort of ran into another pattern that allowed me to cull out a couple of my bedding fish.

“As it turns out, the other pattern seems to be better than what I originally thought,” he adds. “I think it might just be developing, so I’m pretty anxious to try it a lot more tomorrow.”

5th Place – Scott Martin  – 18 pounds, 6 ounces

Scott Martin is another pro who weighed in all largemouths for his catch today, three of which came off beds.

“I had about 15 fish marked on beds, but a lot of them were gone today,” Martin says. “I did catch a few looking at them, but the others came just casting a variety of lures around in those bedding areas. I caught a couple just fishing secondary points leading into those bedding pockets.”

Martin says he has a few spotted bass schools he is saving for the colder days forecast for later in the week.

“My plan is really to use up these largemouths while it’s warm,” Martin explains. “If I make it to days three and four, I will totally switch gears and fish for spotted bass on the weekend.”
