Berkley Havoc Boss Dog Review by Walker Smith

Berkley Havoc Boss Dog Review

Walker Smith

This soft plastic bass fishing bait is an awesome fish producer at a competitive price point

Contrary to popular belief, soft plastic bass fishing baits don’t have to be covered in crazy appendages in order to be effective. When you walk down the aisle of your local tackle shop, it almost seems as if the more simple-shaped baits are becoming the minority these days. While innovation is awesome, I don’t think we should lose sight of the simplicity of our sport.

I received a very welcomed breath of fresh air recently when I started experimenting with the Berkley Havoc Boss Dog. It’s not necessarily a “sexy” soft plastic. It may not grab your eye at first glance, but I have loved fishing with it. Throughout my testing, it has proven to be a functional and practical bait that does what it’s supposed to do—catch bass.

Hughes wins co-angler title
MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (March 16, 2015) – Jason Bridwell of Gray, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League Volunteer Division tournament of 2015 on Cherokee Lake. For his victory, Bridwell earned $5,127.
“It feels good to grab a check,” said Bridwell. “There are a lot of solid anglers around here so when I can finish strong it feels great.”
Due to recent cold-weather fronts and sporadic warm-ups around Cherokee Lake, Bridwell sought out the warmest water possible in order to find the largemouth bite. He settled into the Three Springs area where the water was hovering around 50 degrees and used an orange Rapala Shad Rap and a Brownback Chartreuse-colored Bandit 200 Series crankbait to catch his first two keepers.
“I also fished the midsection down by the berry farm area,” Bridwell said. “I worked between there and Three Springs creek in 90 minute intervals.”
Bridwell said he caught seven of his nine keepers between noon and 3 p.m.
“I was fishing shallow depths, from zero to four feet of water,” Bridwell said. “The smaller Shad Rap did its job well.”
Bridwell said his immediate goals are to now qualify for the Volunteer Division Regional tournament.
“Of course, I’d like to win another one of these Saturday tournaments, but fishing the regional event would awesome.”

PRICE WINS WALMART BASS FISHING LEAGUE SAVANNAH RIVER DIVISION EVENT ON LAKE RUSSELL

Denny wins co-angler title
ELBERTON, Ga. (March 16, 2015) – Bo Price of Westminster, South Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds even Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Savannah River Division tournament of 2015 on Lake Russell. For his victory, Price earned $6,796.
“The financial part is great, but getting out there and seeing all your hard work come to fruition is always more satisfying to me than the money,” said Price.
In order to claim the tournament’s top prize, Price said that he fished his favorite patches of trees in the midlake area, off the main river.
“The timber has a lot of decent fish in it,” said Price. “I usually can catch some quality bass in there.”
He went on to say that the weather definitely played a big role in this tournament.
“Up until about three days before the tournament, the weather was nice and the fish were pulling up shallow in their prespawn phase,” Price said. “But the recent cold rain pushed everything back a bit deeper.”
Luckily, Price was able to start his day off right by netting a 6-pound, 4-ounce bass and another 5-pound keeper using a white 1/2-ounce Hawg Caller spinnerbait.
“After I caught those two, I was faced with the decision to fish for a limit or chase more big ones,” Price said. “I decided to keep fishing for the limit.”
Around 10 a.m., the bite slowed in the trees so Price finished off his day targeting mainlake points. He used a custom-made peanut butter and jelly-colored football-head jig to fill his limit.
“I figured it would take around 20 pounds to win the tournament,” Price said. “So I kept rolling with the two or three-pounders and ended up with a nice stringer.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Bo Price, Westminster, S.C., five bass, 17-0, $4,796 + $2,000 Ranger Cup award

Fielder wins co-angler title
GROVE, Okla. (March 16, 2015) – Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 29 pounds, 1 ounce Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League Okie Division tournament of 2015 on Grand Lake. For his victory, Birge earned $7,000.
“It feels good to grab a win between Tour events,” said Birge, who is fishing his rookie season at the sport’s top level – the Walmart FLW Tour. “I like these one-day Saturday BFL tournaments. They’re a lot of fun and there is some very good local competition.”
Birge built a winning stringer by returning to a practice spot he had explored earlier in the week. He found warmer water in a pocket and figured the big females he caught in practice would be moving in there. He was right.
“I caught every one of my fish in that spot,” said Birge. “I stayed in there all day and netted 20 to 25 fish in two or three feet of water.”
Birge’s key bait was a Chrome Sexy Shad-colored Rat-L-Trap crankbait. It was the only bait he used for the duration of the tournament.
“Everyone else was throwing umbrella rigs and jerkbaits,” said Birge. “I threw the Rat-L-Trap because nobody else was, so I figured the fish hadn’t seen it. It worked out well.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

Ellis wins co-angler title
GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 16, 2015) – Craig Hipsher of Benton, Kentucky, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 24 pounds, 4 ounces Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League LBL Division tournament of 2015 on Kentucky Lake. For his victory, Hipsher earned $4,981.
“It feels great to cut a check,” said Hipsher. “All the days of practice paid off.”
After a dense morning fog delayed takeoff for two hours, Hipsher said he headed to the south end of the lake near the U.S. Highway 68 bridge to throw his first casts of the day. Within ten minutes he had three bass in the livewell, including two 6-pounders. Hipsher said he caught his fish using a Rayburn Red-colored Rat-L-Trap crankbait and a crawdad-colored Rapala Shad Rap.
“We concentrated on running points and spawning pockets,” Hipsher said. “The fish had moved a bit compared to where I had found them in practice, but I still ended up pulling in 30 bass.”
Looking to add to his already impressive stringer, Hipsher decided to move to shallow around 1 p.m. Using a Sexy Shad-colored Accent Lures spinnerbait, the Kentucky angler wrestled in a 6-pound, 10-ounce kicker to seal the victory.
“I knew the water would be warmer and figured the big fish would be moving back to their spawning areas,” said Hipsher. “I was sitting in about nine or 10 inches of water and I saw him lurking around a stump.
“It was a good day. Everything went right.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

Davis & Milam win Castaway Anglers Stop 1 of 2015

Hey Everybody,

We had a great turnout yesterday (17 boats) and some good bags of fish. First place went to Davis/Milam with 14.26 lbs and Big Fish of 6.0 lbs; second was Dalton/Rowland with 12.70 lbs; and third went to Jennings/Deitterick with 11.50 lbs. It was a great day despite the cold weather and the all day rain shower. Our next tournament should be much warmer and drier at Lake Anna next month on Sunday April 12th. Don’t forget the week after (Saturday April 18th) we are putting on a charity tournament for William Campbell High School Band at Smith Mt Lake State Park, so put it on your calender. See everybody next month.

Jimmy

Humminbird® ONIX™/ION™ 2.000 Software Released

Latest software makes award-winning unit even faster, offers additional features

EUFAULA, AL (February 25, 2015) Humminbird ONIX™ and ION™ just got even better, thanks to Version 2.000 Software, a free download now available to all ONIX and ION users.

For starters, Version 2.000 dramatically increases the speed and performance of both ONIX and ION units. That means that exclusive features like ONIX’s AutoChart Live™, SmartStrike™ and CrossTouch™ all operate with enhanced responsiveness, making them all the more potent. In total, Version 2.000 includes many performance enhancements!

To begin the update process, users should first verify they have registered their product on Humminbird.com, followed by reading the documents found at this link in their entirety before performing the software update. This is critical.

Following product registration and reading the PDF instructions, users should download the software to their computer. Please note that the file download can take up to 30 minutes depending on your internet connectivity speeds. Once successfully downloaded onto your PC, unzip the files on your computer before copying them to a blank 4 GB or greater Class 6 SD card. Do not rename files.

Once the files have been saved to the blank SD card, eject the card from your computer or external card reader and insert into your Humminbird unit. Please note that during the update process it is critical that you maintain continual power to your unit.

Once installed, ONIX users will note significantly improved speed as well new features, including:

  • New Real Time Sonar (RTS) window in Down Imaging (DI) mode that provides instant view of all returns, which is ideal for vertical fishing situations.
  • NMEA 0183 defaults and on/off toggle
  • AIS Source Selection
  • AutoChart Live data loads at cursor
  • Partial Fuel Tool networking support
  • 50/83/455 kHz 2D Offset Menu
  • Simultaneous Med/High CHIRP support with SM3000
  • 14 Pin 200/455 DI transducer support
  • Additional Airmar transducer support
