The Thanksgiving Holiday has come and gone and Old Man Winter has started knocking on the door! Last month proved to be a great month for both crappie & striper.  Fish Tales weighed and photographed several nice striper & crappie, as well as a few nice bass caught by anglers fishing with both live and artificial baits. The November Big Fish Contest at Fish Tales had several leader changes throughout the month, including a four way tie at one time for crappie! Here are the anglers that took top honors taking the $100 first place prize with their fish………..

STRIPER- KURT HAMMERSCHMIDT  12 POUNDS 13 OUNCES

BASS- DAVID COOK  6 POUNDS 12 OUNCES

CRAPPIE- ROBBIE PUGH  1 POUND 9 OUNCES

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THAT PARTICIPATED!!!!!!!!
Fish Tales is doing it again this month as well.
The rules are very simple………1- MUST LAUNCH AT ANNA POINT MARINA
2- IF FISHING WITH A GUIDE, $8 RAMP FEE MUST BE PAID BEFORE OUTING
3- LIVE AND ARTIFICIAL BAIT IS ALLOWED
4- TOURNAMENT CAUGHT FISH ARE ELIGIBLE
5- ALL FISH MUST ME WEIGHED ON THE FISH TALES PORCH SCALESTOP PRIZE IS $100 or A YEARLY RAMP PASS ($125 VALUE)

BASS- The largemouth will be in a full winter pattern starting this month. Look for fish to be on main lake points, deep brush and rock piles, channel edges and deep stump fields.

Great way to catch them are with suspending jerk baits, Scrounger Heads rigged with a Damiki Armor Shad, spoons like the Tooth Ache, blade baits like the Riverside Ripper,DAMIKI VAULT, DAMIKI VORTEX and Jig & Pig combinations.

Fishing slow and finding the bait fish are the keys to winter time fishing. You will still be able to find some schooling action in the Dike 3 area of the lake all month. A-Rigs will be a major player again this winter to put fish in the boat. I like to rig my multi arm rigs with 1/4oz jig heads and I employee several different types of 4 inch swimbaits. Damiki Anchovy Shads, Bass Assassin Sea Shads, Reaction Innovations Little Dipper & Strike King Perfect Plastics KVD Swim-N-Shiner.CRAPPIE- The Specks have moved from the shallows to the winter time hideouts. Bridge pilings, deep docks and brush piles will hold numbers of fish all winter. Small minnows rigged on slip bobbers and 2″ curl tail grubs are great ways to catch them. There will be all sorts of sizes schooled up together this time of year. (not necessarily according to size) Most of the time you will have to catch lot’s of small ones to get the keepers that you are after. This is the reason I prefer artificial bait.STRIPER- These will be the most sought out fish all winter long. Early in the month you can catch them up in the “RIVERS” until the water temps start to drop and then they will follow the bait back down to the mid lake area. Around Christmas they should be located around the 208 bridge and the Dike 3 fish will also be turning on.

Look for birds diving as an indicator that bait fish is in the area. Don’t run all the way up to the diving birds, the school can be very large and fish can be caught 100 yards of more away from the action. Just like with my multi arm rigs for bass fishing, I employee several different 4 inch paddle tail swimbaits rigged on a 1/4oz jig head. My favorite is a Damiki Anchovy Shad in either Pro Purple or Pro Blue colors, followed by Bass Assassin Sea Shads in either Crystal Shads or Salt & Pepper Silver Phantom Chart Tail (commonly known as GREEN TAIL), Strike King Perfect Plastics KVD Swim-N-Shiner in Green Gizzard Shad & Blue Gizzard Shad and Reaction Innovations Little Dipper in Sexy Shad & Pearl Blue Shad colors.

Downsizing your line will help you as well. I use 8lb Izorline on my spinning outfits and 10lb Izorline on my casting. Remember you are fishing open water, no need for large line tests to get them in the boat, just take your time and wear them down. Good luck and I will see you out there!!!Lake Level- 14 inches lowWater TempsDike 3-  50 degrees
Down Lake-  46-49 degrees
Mid Lake-  45-47 degrees
Up Lake-  42-45 degrees

INNOVATIVE, ADAPTABLE ARCRV AND ARCHAUS FROM LET’S GO AERO
OFFER EXPANDED RV LIVING AND STORAGE SPACE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Outdoor lifestyle experts Lets Go Aero introduce an innovative way to expand RV living and storage space with the adaptable new ArcRV and ArcHaus modular shelters. These versatile designs allow users to conveniently add a covered side room, breezeway or a completely enclosed gear storage area or pet’s sleeping quarters to RVs, truck campers or vans.

These unique solutions were developed by Lets Go Aero, Inc., creator of gear management solutions for the automotive and outdoor recreation industries. “The ArcRV and its related ArcHaus family of products were created to be a virtual “Swiss Army Knife type of solution for a range of RV and outdoor applications,” said Marty Williams, president of Let’s Go Aero.

Easy to set up and transport, the ArcRV was engineered to be a durable extension that fits snugly around the doorway or rear area of most RVs. Its sloped, conical shape is 10 feet wide and six and a half feet high in the front, rising up to meet the RV door area with a height of eight feet nine inches. A sturdy lower valance panel securely attaches to the space below the RV door to create a completely enclosed area for gear storage or to create a secure and separate living quarters for pets.

Constructed of 190T ripstop polyester fabric with a 2,000 mm polyurethane coating, one of the highest-quality water and UV-resistant fabric materials among tents, and with rugged powder-coated steel and fiberglass poles, the ArcRV is designed for staying dry in the heaviest of rains and for years of traveling convenience.

In addition to the ArcRV, Lets Go Aero offers the ArcHaus, a modular walk-in, walk-out tent shelter that can be connected to the ArcRV or set up independently.  ArcHaus features the same high-quality construction as the ArcRV, and can be configured with two zip-on panels for full enclosure with large screens or used as a sun shade canopy by removing one or both door panels. This 10-foot long, six-foot wide and six foot six-inches high shelter can be attached to the ArcRV with the Zipper Mate, a zip-on panel option for increased living space or gear storage. Pirch overcomes mountainous odds – Bassmaster.com

Pirch overcomes mountainous odds

Steve Bowman

PAYSON, Ariz. – Clifford Pirch understands the words “purple mountain majesties” better than most.

Pirch spends most of his year chasing bass in the relative flatlands of America on the Bassmaster Elite Series. In the fall, he returns to his Arizona mountain home where he spends his time chasing elk and guiding hunters from ridge top to ridge top.

Pirch spends practically every day in the fall watching the sun light up the landscape washing the mountains with purple hues only mountains can have to black once the sun has robbed all the color from the day. The next day he watches as the process is repeated.

“I have a good life,” Pirch said. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways.”

Mountains are the perfect metaphor for Pirch’s life. Blessings come as big as mountains and difficulties follow suit.

The Elite Series angler has dreamed of being a professional fisherman since childhood. In eighth grade, his teacher/coach Max Foster told him he needed to work harder on his Algebra. Pirch’s response: “All I have to do is be able to count to five.”

His father passes on the story fondly, but it wasn’t always viewed that way. In high school, Pirch was a four-time All-State wrestler and All-State cross-country star. While Pirch was accepting his diploma at graduation, it was announced he aspired to be a professional bass fisherman: The crowd laughed.

Four years later as a senior at Northern Arizona University and just months away from a biology degree, a professor laughed again at his aspirations, moving Pirch to quit school and prove everyone wrong.

Great Gift Ideas for any Budget by Jim Root

Great Gift Ideas for any Budget

If you’re looking for something big, or maybe just a stocking stuffer for your favorite angler, I have some great suggestions for you that will fit any budget! This has been a tremendous year for new product development and I’m really excited to be able to tell you about some of the exciting new stuff I’ve been using this year!

Gear Keeper
Retractor
Price:  Under $10.00
www.gearkeeper.com

I met these guys at ICAST and immediately started looking at all the places I could use Gear Keepers on my boat. Fly Fishermen have been using retractors like this for years on their vests. But there are endless possibilities beyond the shore of a creek. They come in different sizes to accommodate different accessories, but the bottom line is they’re just rugged as hell and eliminate the “where did I put my (blank)” that we all experience at some point, which will save you time and keep you fishing more. Here’s a short list of what I’m using them for on my boat.

1. Pliers. This has been crucial for me. My retractor is able to extend over 3 feet. Rather than use the waist clip attached at the top, I’ve secured the GK to the side of my console with double sided 3m sticky tape, which allows me to reach to nearly both ends of my boat freely. If I need to go further or put them away, the quick detach releases my pliers from the unit with just a snap.

2. Culling System. This might not seem like a big deal, but I hate finding my culling system tangled up at the bottom of my livewell. Like my pliers, I also keep this secured to console, but on the inside by my legs so they’re out of the way until I need them. The 30 inch cable easily reaches my livewell area.

3. Cell Phone. When I’m driving the last thing I want to worry about it is my phone falling off the boat. Not because I’m afraid it’ll get wet, I just don’t want to have to go back and recover it and lose precious time running from place to place or to weigh in. Plus my SLXtreme case has the perfect place for me to attach a GK that makes it readily accessible to me while I’m driving, should I find myself needing a weather update or to check the tides or current depending on where I’m fishing.

4. GoPro Safety Attachment. In case you haven’t heard, I lost a GoPro Hero 3+ Silver edition this year on the Susquehanna river, when I caught my first smallmouth of the day just five minutes into my trip and walked from one side of the boat to the other, creating a tiny shift in weight that sent my camera and suction cup mount tumbling over the side. Ironically, I was able to watch this on video when I got home with my other remaining camera. Not only was that an expensive day on the water, but I could have very easily prevented that had I done what I do now, which is secure it with a GK every time. I’ll never have to worry about watching another camera fall off my boat, and I bought that kind of piece of mind for less than $10.00. I know there are thousands of people who have had similar experiences happen to them. How can you NOT make that tiny investment to protect yourself?

Snowlizard
SLXtreme
MSRP:  $149.99
www.snowlizardproducts.com

I have seen a lot of smart phone/tablet cases that claim to be the best, but I have only seen one that is waterproof up to six feet, can float, has built in battery power to provide you with enough power to fully recharge your unit TWICE, is rugged enough to withstand drops of 6 feet, AND has a solar panel that will charge your device.  Oh, and to remove your phone you just undo one latch at the top and you’re on your way.  Sound extreme?  It is.  Why in the world would anyone want all that in a case?  Because you need it if you live for the outdoors.  Last summer at Champlain I lost both graphs and my outboard, it was probably the roughest experience I have ever had on the water.  This case allowed me to keep catching fish and track the storm.  The floating device attaches to the bottom of the case, insuring if it goes overboard that you can retrieve it quickly and easily, but it also acts as a neck protector, allowing me to wear the phone around my neck and not feel any weight whatsoever.  This put my phone at my fingertips while I was fishing, keeping my coangler and I on my best spots that I had marked on my Fishidy app.  I have been raving about this case for months on my blog at Weather Underground.  I don’t see how anyone who considers themselves to be an avid hunter/angler could use any other case.

New Pro Products
V-T2 Livewell System
MSRP: $44.99
www.NewProProducts.com

This is that one unit I’ve found that I can honestly say I will never again go without. Sure, it’s not gonna save my life. But it might save my fish, and the investment is so reasonably priced at $44.99 that it’s probably just a matter of time before the V-T2 becomes standard on all boats with livewells. By using airflow technology, the V-T2 infuses oxygen into your livewell and simultaneously expels unwanted CO2. It doesn’t require batteries or run off of any power source, keeps your livewells cooler, and will air them out while driving home. If you use this system, you won’t need to bring ice to keep your fish alive, a practice which has been proven to do more harm than good anyhow being that ice typically contains chlorine and other chemicals used in drinking water that can be harmful to fish. Think of it this way, if this product prevents just ONE fish from dying, that one fish could mean the difference between a First Place check and (potentially) thousands of dollars, or tenth place, and a few hundred. If you’ve done the work, and caught the winning fish, you deserve the win. And more than that, the fish deserve to be taken care of to protect the future of the sport.

Dobyns Rods
Champion 703SF Spinning Rod
MSRP: $249.99
www.DobynsRods.com

In my opinion this is the greatest spinning rod ever made. This rod is sensitive enough to feel the softest bite on a dropshot, or every little pebble when dragging a shakyhead rig; but also strong enough to wrestle largemouth over 7 pounds, as you can see in the picture below. I even use this to throw little jerkbaits like the Lucky Craft Bevy Shad when I need a little more distance and slower/more finesse-type retrieve. You will absolutely LOVE this rod.

Stormr USA
Strykr Series Jacket and Bibs
www.StormrUSA.com
MSRP: Jacket $325, Bibs $299

There’s no way to put a price tag on being warm and dry in the outdoors, and during last season’s Deadliest Catch on Discovery I actually saw a guy on the NV Timebandit wearing this suit. I’ve worn it in temps as high as 65 degrees, and as low as 25. At my last tournament I wore only shorts and a tshirt under my Strykr, and it was 38 degrees at takeoff. It’s a huge advantage to not have to wear countless layers under your rain gear; it increases your mobility and reduces fatigue. This is the suit of the ages, that will ultimately redefine the way rain gear is made; it’s that good. More and more anglers are making the switch to Stormr. You should too.

Humminbird
Onix 10CI Combo
www.Humminbird.com
MSRP: $2499

The ONIX system from Humminbird will revolutionize the industry of marine electronics. With features that are cutting edge and unique only to the Onix platform, anglers will have options available to them that were previously considered unattainable. Super responsive touch screens in electric high definition also come standard with a joystick to allow users to toggle with gloves or while battling the rain. Not sure what you missed while you were reeling in that fish? Simply scroll backward and relive the structure and data that you passed over. Many anglers have already discovered the benefits of this new system and have made the switch. You’ll be so glad you did.

So there you go. That’s a full list of gear, and any angler would be thrilled to find any (or even ALL) of that gear under the tree.

Happy Holidays.

Minn Kota Fortrex 112 Trolling Motor Review

Jason reviews the trolling motor he’s been using for bass, crappie and bluegill fishing in 2014

I’ve owned several boats over the last 20 years. Owning different brands of fishing boats you find common denominators. Probably the most important thing a good a fishing boat has in common with other fishing boats is a bow mount trolling motor. This year I had the opportunity to fish with a new one from Minn Kota – the Fortrex 112.

After fishing with the Fortrex 112 for 6 months now, I wanted to share my experience with the motor. I received the Minn Kota Fortrex 112 from Minn Kota the first of June and shot a quick install video with the motor here on Wired2fish.

I’ve fished shallow, deep, in rough water and heavy wind and found several key aspects of this trolling motor to be of note to avid anglers. Here are key points to consider on this relatively new trolling motor:
