Nice cool Autumn day for the Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail  Qualifier #8 and the 27 teams that participated! Air temps ranged from 43 in the am to 73 in the pm. The winds  were pretty much light to variable, maybe 5 mph at times. Water temps averaged 65 degrees. Fish were  scattered with most caught in 8 to 15′ of water with spinnerbaits & jigs. Others were caught using crankbaits,  spoons, jerk baits & worm combos in deeper water.
Tony Woodard & Scott Smith netted 5 bass weighing a total of 16.62 lbs. taking 1st Place worth $865 and 1st  TWT, bringing their total winnings to $1,243.

The 2nd Place Team of Mike Stevenson & Chad Jones weighed in 5 bass weighing 14.69 lbs. They also won the 2nd Place Big Fish (6.27) and took home $659. Big Fish for the day
was caught by the team of Ron Szaro & Keith Deal (subbing for Brian Lipscomb) weighing 6.41 lbs. & earning  them $378 in cash.
1st place team member Scott Smith won the Tow Boats US Member Award of $50.
Only 52 bass were weighed in for a total of 146 pounds. This averaged 2.80 lbs. a fish and they were nice and healthy looking but the Fall fishing was tough this day!

OVERVIEW: Fall is a great time to be on the water! The leaves are changing and the fish are usually feeding as they prepare for winter. Water temperature will be in the 50’s. Fishing for stripers, bass and crappie should be good this month. Stripers will start to feed at night this month.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing will be good. Best lures will be Carolina rigs, crank baits, Texas rigged plastic worms, football head jigs, drop shot rigs, spinner baits and shaky heads. Most largemouth bass will be caught on rocky points, humps, brush piles and docks. Top water fishing will be fair this month. Best depths will be from the surface to 25 feet deep. Schools of shad will start to move towards the back of the creeks and to the head waters of the rivers.

Smallmouth Bass– Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be rocks, humps, ledges and main channel points. Best lures will be jig & pig, top water lures, hair jigs and crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will start to feed on crawfish this month. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line and smaller lures will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the upper sections of the lake
and in the larger creeks. Best lures will be top water poppers, Alabama rigs, swim baits, buck tails, and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4 to 3/8 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from the surface to 40 feet deep. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Casting to schooling stripers will be a good method to catch stripers this month. Live bait and trolling is also a good method this month. Some stripers will feed at night.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be good this month. They will be found 5 to 15 feet deep this month. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month: Don’t overlook fishing at night this month. We will still have warm days and clear water. Make sure you wear your life jacket. You can never be too careful when boating. Remember to be courteous and obey all the boating laws. Please practice catch and release. Take a kid fishing!

Throwing The Bull – PowerTeam Lures.com

Throwing The Bull

The Bull Nose Jig that is. One of the most commonly asked questions we get about this awesome little jig is which of our baits makes the best trailer for it. This of course is a loaded question with many variables because the conditions in fishing change day in and day out (kind of like “what color do you like best?”).  So there’s no one single best answer for that loaded question other than “The one that’s working best that day”. That being said, I’ll give you my simple formula for how I decide which trailer I’m going to start with when I hit the water. Pig on the Bull Nose

The 2 things I take into consideration are:

(1) The size of the profile I want to show the fish.

(2) The rate of fall that will trigger the most strikes.

I also know that if I rig 2 rods up with different size profiles and fall rates, it’ll help me narrow down what the fish are responding best to more quickly.

Here are some simple guidelines.

Small profile/medium fall = Craw D’oeuvre on a 3/8 oz. Bull Nose

Small profile/fast fall = Craw D’oeuvre on a 1/2 oz. Bull Nose

Small stocky profile/medium fall = 3.5″ Texas-Rig Jig on a 3/8 oz. Bull Nose

Small stocky profile/fast fall = 3.5″ Texas-Rig Jig on a 1/2 oz. Bull Nose

*A Bull Nose tipped with a 3.5″ Texas-Rig Jig will fall just slightly slower than a Bull Nose tipped with a Craw D’oeuvre as the TRJ is just a little more stockier than the Craw D.

Medium streamline profile/medium fall =Trimmed Bully Grass Devil on a 3/8 oz. Bull Nose

Medium streamline profile/fast fall =Trimmed Bully Grass Devil on a 1/2 oz. Bull Nose

Large profile/slow-medium fall =Trimmed Conviction Craw on a 3/8 oz. Bull Nose

Large profile/ medium-fast fall =Trimmed Conviction Craw on a 1/2 oz. Bull Nose

Large Profile/slow fall = Diesel Craw on a 3/8 oz. Bull Nose

Large profile/medium fall = Diesel Craw on a 1/2 oz. Bull Nose

Jigs
As for trimming these baits before rigging them on the jig, for the Conviction Craw and Bully Grass Devil I generally snip about 3/4″ off the baits to get the exact profile I’m looking for. For the Diesel Craw I snip about 1/2″, for the 3.5″ Texas-Rig Jig I’ll either just snip the skirt off or just leave the skirt on (leave the skirt on if you want an extra bulkier profile).  As for the Craw D’oeuvre, I just rig it right onto the jig because the little Craw D is compact enough. Unless of course the water temps are below 45 degrees, then I’ll snip about a 1/2″ off it and trim the jig skirt down on the jig as well for a real down sized presentation.

Bull Nose In The Mouth!

Well that’s it! Our recipe for rigging up our Creature baits on the Bull Nose Jigs is now on the table. So the next time you feel like “gettin’ jiggy with it”, use these guidelines as a reference when you’re rigging up your jig rods to do some flippin’ or pitchin’ and be prepared to have your drag tested the next time you hit the water.
