Tommy Biffle asking for prayers By Don Barone

Tommy Biffle asking for prayers

Please pray.

Pray that Elite angler, Tommy Biffle’s wife, Sharon, recovers.

Tommy Biffle is a great friend of mine, great friend of many.  We have had many breakfasts together, many dinners, and I have to tell you that Tommy is a rock of a man, a fierce competitor, somewhat cranky, somewhat funny, one of my favorites on the tour.

I have talked to him when he has been mad, I have talked to him when he has been happy, this morning I talked to him as he was heartbroken.  Several times he couldn’t answer me, several times his voice cracked.

My heart goes out to my buddy.

Sharon, his wife of 34 years, the mother of his only daughter, Jennifer, Sharon the true love of his life, had a massive heart attack, open heart surgery and is touch and go.

Tommy this morning, “db she’s doing a little better today, last night was….bad…was bad.”

As I spoke to him his 56 year old wife lay in a hospital bed “attached to a bunch of machines, a respirator…”

Tommy, obviously will not be at the upcoming Elite event in Philadelphia, I asked him if there was anything, anything I could do to help, and came this,

“Just pray db, just pray for Sharon.”

And so I ask, we the entire family at B.A.S.S. ask, simply this, “Pray for Sharon, pray for Tommy, pray for Jennifer, pray that God’s hands cradles her heart and guides the hands of the doctors and nurses caring for her.”

Please Pray.

IMG_20140725_104009478 Deborah Quinn from Va. Beach with a nice striper caught 7/25/14 while fishing with Captain Dale.

OVERVIEW: Fishing conditions should start to improve as the days become shorter.. Water temperature will be in the upper 70’s to the lower 80’s. Most bass will feed at night , early morning and late afternoon this month. Fishing for stripers will be good.

Largemouth Bass-Fishing will be fair. Best lures will be Carolina rigs, crank baits, large Tevas rigged plastic worms, jigs, and shakey heads. Most largemouth bass will be caught on ledges, points, humps, brush piles and deep docks. Largemouth bass will feed best at night . Top water fishing will improve this month. Best depths will be from the surface to 20 feet deep.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be humps, ledges and main points. Best lures will be jig & pig, top water lures, hair jigs and crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will start to feed in open water around schools of shad this month. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line and smaller lures will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the mid to lower sections of the lake
and the larger creeks. Best lures will be Alabama rigs, swim baits, buck tails, and Zoom flukes fished with 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from 25 to 60 feet deep. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Vertical jigging will be one of the best methods to catch stripers this month. Live bait and trolling is also a good method this month.

Crappie-Fishing for crappie will be poor this month. They will be found 15 to 25 feet deep this month. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Fishing around lights at night will be productive.
TIP OF THE Month: Make sure you leave your running lights on at night. You can never be too careful when boating after dark. Please practice catch and release. Remember to always wear your life jacket and attach your kill switch. Try your luck early in the mornings before the boat traffic begins.

UNC Charlotte wins national title on Chatuge

Shaye Baker
Jake Whitaker and Andrew Helms of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte tapped into experience to get the job done on the Chatuge Reservoir.

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Chatuge Reservoir behaved exactly the way Jake Whitaker and Andrew Helms expected, which led to the University of North Carolina Charlotte team’s win at the 2014 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.

“It’s tough fishing out here,” said Whitaker, who grew up only 2 hours from Chatuge and has fished it multiple times.

“The way to do it is to commit to getting big bites, even if you don’t get very many,” he added.

The plan worked for the college duo. They caught 11 pounds, 12 ounces on the first day, followed it up with 12-11 on Day 2, and closed out the competition with their biggest bag, 14-2.

“I’ve never worked harder in my life,” said Whitaker, after he weighed his catch. “We should have more, but I lost two 3-pounders.”

Why the Sweet Beaver it quickly became the staple in the fishing industry. By Bobby Saffel

image_2

When Reaction Innovation released the Sweet Beaver it quickly became the staple in the fishing industry. Take a look through any serious bass anglers tackle and you will see at least one pack of beaver style baits. The reason is because they flat out catch fish. The soft plastic
manufacturers know this and that’s why almost every company sells a beaver bait. In my eyes, there is many duplicates but only one true beaver. Today I will review the Sweet Beaver and tell you a few tricks along the way.

image

When I look at the Sweet Beaver the first thing that catches my eye is the ribbed body. These ribs serve two purposes: to displace water so the fish can hone in on the bait and to give a life like feel of a crawfish when the fish inhales it. The ribs on the body of the beaver mimics segmented tail of a real crawfish. Further down the body is a flapper on each side of the body. This also displaces water and since they are free moving, they can flare when stationary and look like a real crawfish in a defensive position. Lastly is the tail of the bait. The tail comes perforated from RI, but can be separated if the bait needs more free moving appendages. The head of the bait is very durable and doesn’t tear out as easily as some others on the market. This is a big plus when punching grass all day because the mat alone can tear the bait up.

I’ve found the beaver to be extremely effective as a flipping bait. I’ll fish it around boat docks, cypress trees, and grass mats. Basically anywhere a jig isn’t very effective. It also can draw bites when a jig is too much and the fish are wanting something smaller. Another use for the beaver is on the end of a Carolina rig or Swing head. The Carolina rig accents the free falling spiral that the beaver has. A swing head allows you to fish it around rocks, another hiding spot for crawfish.image_1

Currently there are four styles of the Sweet Beaver: the standard Sweet Beaver 4.20, the Smallie Beaver, the Double Wide Beaver, and the Kinky Beaver. The Sweet Beaver 4.20 is the flagship of Reaction Innovation’s product line and is offered in 50 different colors to match whatever you are trying to imitate. The beaver comes in 10 to a pack and is packaged in a high quality package that won’t fall part when you’re opening them up.

The Sweet Beaver has really improved my fishing over the years and know it will improve yours. Grab a pack at Tackle Warehouse and start hooking into some big bass this summer.

Lake Anna's August Lake Report by Chris Craft

10439503_10203959889147884_8428721162952906137_n

CCBASSN GUIDE SERVICE is offering an EARLY BIRD TOP WATER TRIP for the months of June, July and August on Monday, Thursday and Friday only . These trips will be 3 hour outings for 1 or 2 anglers and will be TOP WATER only. The rate for the EARLY BIRD TRIPS are $125!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

BASS– Most of the bass in the lake have made their move to deeper water for the summer in the Mid and Down lake regions. Look for them on deep brush piles, bridge pilings and rock piles in the middle of the day. Early and late in the day, some of them will move up to feed on the many bait fish pods in the lake, but the majority of them will stay in deep water and feed. You can catch them on deep crankbaits, Texas and Carolina rigged plastics and Shakey Head plastics. One of my favorite crank baits is the Luck E Strike Rick Clunn Freak. This shovel lip deep diver will get to its maximum depth faster than any other crank bait that I have thrown.

Throughout this month you can still catch uplake bass in and around the willow grass. During low light conditions, top water will produce for you. Fish Damiki MTB Noisy Buzz Baits in and around the grass, try putting a Damiki Air Frog in the thickest willow grass you can find and be prepared for very violent strikes. Don Iovino Splash It poppers will work around the edges, Fish Tales has a very large assortment of colors in this great top water popper! once the sun gets above the tree line, pitch an Arson JIgs Arkie Head Jig under boat docks and into the willow grass.

August is the month to start looking for schooling bass in the early mornings and late evenings busting the many pads of shad and herring fry. The top water action is great with these schoolies. The Paycheck Baits Repo Man walking baits, Don Iovino Splash It, Damiki Rambler, D-Pop are great choices for surface fishing. For sub surface strikes, the Damiki Armor Shad is a hard bait to beat. More great soft jerkbaits are Zoom Super Fluke’s, Super Fluke Jr’s and North Anna Bait Company CC Minow’s.

You can also catch these schooling fish with spoons and blade baits. Toothache Spoons are small in size to match the baitfish that they are feeding on. Another great spoon is the Strike King Sexy Spoon, Fish Tales has the in 2 proven colors.

STRIPER- The Lineside’s are in FULL BLOWN SUMMER pattern NOW. You can find them feeding on the surface early in the morning from the 208 bridge up to Stubb’s Bridge on the Pamunkey arm and up to the Holiday Bridge on the North Anna arm. Popping baits, Walking baits and soft jerkbaits are all great choices. My favorite is a Cotton Cordell Broken Back Redfin. Just wake the bait under the surface and hold on, the strikes are usually very violent. After the morning feed is over, look for them with your electronics. Once you find the school, you can catch the by vertical jigging Toothache Spoons, Damiki Vault’s and Damiki Vortex Blade Baits.

Trolling is also in FULL SWING. Deep Diving Redfin’s with a bucktail trailer, DD22’s in Chart/Blue back and BPS LEC15’s in Chart/Blue and XXX Shad are all great trolling baits. One little trick that I do with the DD22’s and LEC15’s are to add a “FLUKE KILLER” bucktail trailer to them. The “FLUKE KILLER” is a weightless bucktail with a spinner blade in front of it.

Live Bait is also working well for the anglers wanting to fish that way. Store bought large or jumbo shiners will work but, the native bait in the lake will be a better choice if you can get up early enough and throw a cast net. Go to Stubbs Bridge, 208 bridge or Holiday Mill Bridge and hang a lantern to attract the Blue Back Herring to it. Remember, that as the water temps get warmer, the striper will “GIVE UP THE GHOST” rather quickly. Once you have your limit (20″ minimum- 4 per person) PLEASE DO NOT not continue to catch and release them. Even though they may swim off right after the release, most will dye for the stress of being caught.

CRAPPIE- The Specks are in their summer haunts at this time. Look for them under deep boat docks, around bridge pilings and brush piles. Small minnows rigged on jig heads or slip bobber’s will be your best bet to catch a cooler full of these tasty morsals.
