Hicks and Lupo take Season opener on Lake Anna

Richmond Marine Center’s AC Tournament Trail Virginia Division started the season on Lake Anna Saturday March 29th. We had 25 teams in the event today launching out of Sturgeon Creek Marina. Conditions were tough to say the least. We had heavy rains in the forecast with air temperatures expected to be in the mid 50’s all day. We started the day off with a fog delay that lasted over an hour and had teams really anxious to get out and capitalize on the low light conditions.

After the fog delay and rain most of the day, the team of Mike Hicks and Keith Lupo topped the field of anglers with 5 bass weighing 17.52 lbs. The winning team also captured the Big Bass award for the tournament with a beautiful bass weighing 6.52 lbs. Hicks and Lupo found there winning fish shallow in the 3-5 foot of water with spinnerbaits and crankbaits. The spinnerbait, fished by a shallow stump was the bait responsible for the big bass of the day. They stated the key to victory was covering water in the mid lake area to catch their fish. With the first place prize and big fish the team took home $1,474 in winnings.

Second Place honors when to the team of Chad Hicks and C.G. Hicks with 4 bass weighing 12.27 lbs. The Rockville VA team stated they were fishing main lake pockets and coves with shallow and medium diving crankbaits. For their efforts the team took home $700.

Finishing third was Don Warren and Robert Whitus with 4 bass tipping the scales at 11.00 lbs even. Team Warren and Whitus were targeting bluff walls and rock on the main lake looking for pre-spawn largemouth with crankbaits and a Yum Flash Mob Jr. They were fishless until about 12:30 when they ran to an area that had been unproductive earlier in the day and started catching their fish. The team took home $403 for their 3rd place finish. They were also the winners of the AC Tournaments Decal Contingency Award and will receive another $100 from AC tournaments.

Rounding out the top 4 was the team of Clay Lewis and Mike Nelms. They weighed only 2 fish for a whopping 9.02 lbs. If you only catch 2, those are the right kind to catch. The team collected $213 for their winnings.

The Virginia Division also offers the Missile Baits “Boost Award” to the team that finishes the first spot out of the money in each event. The Missile Bait “Boost Award” winning team for Lake Anna was the team of Ray Emery and John Hutchins. The team will receive $50.00 in Missile Baits products of their choice. Congratulations!

For the event, we had a total of 39 fish brought to the scales for a total weight of 111.71 lbs for an average of 2.86 lbs per fish. Only 16 teams of the 25 participating were able to bring fish to the scales. With some of the best sticks in the area, these figures show how tough the fishing was for most of the field.

Richmond Marine Center’s AC Tournament Trail Virginia Division could not exist without great sponsors. We would like to thank Richmond Marine Center for logistics and organizing the set up and take down for the event. If you are looking for a new bass boat or need service on your current rig, give Ben Gibson a call, they will take great care of you and your equipment.

A big thank you goes out to Hopkins Gun and Tackle located in Mechanicsville, VA for the awesome weigh-in trailer that provided us protection during the terrible weather conditions. If you have not visited their store, make plans to do so soon. They carry everything a bass fisherman could want and need for their tournament success.

We would like to thank these other great sponsors, Missile Baits, ALX Rods, Optima Batteries, Jethro Baits, Lowrance Electronics, All Terrain Tackle, Propeller Dynamics and Sqwincher.

AC Tournament Trail National Sponsors: Legend Boats, Mercury Outboards, Motorguide, Rayjus, SolarBat, TFO Rods, Lunker Lure, Fishidy, SureLife, EGO S2 Slider and Bass Tackle Depot.

Our next event will be on Lake Gaston on April 19th at Eaton Ferry Marina. If you have questions about the upcoming events or the tournament trail, please feel free to give me a call. Jeff Salmon 804-221-7653

6 Swinging Hammer Tricks By PowerTeam Lures.com

6 Swinging Hammer Tricks

Knowing what you’re throwing is the key to keeping you slaying. The more ways you know to fish the 4.8” Swinging Hammer, the more ways you’ll consistently put pigs in the boat. Whether you’re fishing in a foot of grassy water or a 30 foot hole, the massive side to side swagger of the Swinging Hammer has proven to grab the attention of big fish…and who doesn’t love catching big fish right? So let’s go over some of the ways to draw in the big girls with this powerhouse of a swimbait.

Weightless: When the bass are responding best to a slow presentation, rigging the Swinging Hammer on either a 5/0 or 6/0 EWG hook (preferably with a screw lock) and ever so slowly reeling it just beneath the surface creates a seductive “waking” action that is perfect for drawing strikes in shallow water, especially if you’re doing it over submerged grass. Or, slow reeling near the bottom can be equally effective when fishing it weightless in less than 4 ft. of water for drawing massive strikes from big fish. Remember, true pigs (we’re talking big girls folks) don’t want to burn excess energy chasing down a meal, so when you’re Swinging Hammer comes to a crashing halt, set the hook hard because it’s not a tree!

Weighted swimbait hooks: Weighted swimbait hooks come in all shapes, weights and sizes. When choosing a weighted swimbait hook for the Swinging Hammer, make sure the hook is at least a 5/0 and no bigger than a 7/0 and preferably with a screw lock (starting to see a pattern here?). As far as weight choices go, that all depends on depth, wind, water clarity, and mood of the bass. Having swimbait hooks with multiple weight options in your terminal tackle box will keep you covered for any situation. We personally keep a variety of  1/16,  1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 oz weighted swimbait hooks in our boxes so we’re ready for anything. Also, any time we’re threading the nose of the Swinging Hammer onto the screw lock, we always put a drop of Pro’s Soft Bait Glue on the threads before twisting the nose all the way up. Bass hit this bait with a vengeance so this will definitely increase the amount of fish you catch per bait before the bass totally destroy it.

Chatterbait trailer: The amount of action and vibration the Chatterbait/Swinging Hammer combo puts off is just ignorant and it drives the fish nuts! If you’re fishing in stained or muddy water and you want to make sure they hear your bait coming, this combo will send tasty chills down their lateral lines and they’ll be able to find your bait blindfolded. Again, put a drop of that glue on the hook shaft of the Chatterbait before you slide the Swinging Hammer up it because the bass are going to try to rip the rod out of your hands.

Spinnerbait Trailer : When you see this combo in the water you can pretty much rule out any small fish. If you’re fishing a double willow blade Spinnerbait with a Swinging Hammer on the back, it looks like 3 bait fish swimming together waiting to get engulfed. We recommend either a 3/8  or 1/2 oz Spinnerbait with a big hook and of course do the drop of glue trick on the hook shaft before sliding the swinging Hammer up it. Rigging a Swinging Hammer on a spinnerbait brings the average spinnerbait presentation to a completely different level…the kind of level that pigs love. Can anyone smell bacon?

Swim Jig: Don’t even get me started on this topic! Bite about 3/4 of an inch off the head of the Swinging Hammer and rig it on a swim Jig. Wham! Pair either a Kitchen Sink or a Green Pumpkin Light Blue Swirl Swinging Hammer with a green pumpkin or gill colored swim jig and you have the perfect bluegill imitator (don’t forget about biting off 3/4” to create the stockier profile of a bluegill). We all know how big bass feel about having bluegill near their spawning areas, so throwing this combo is like throwing a chunk of meat at a wild Pit Bull! Definitely make sure you have a stout hook on your swim jig!

Alabama Rig: If you haven’t seen 5 Swinging Hammers on an A-rig then you haven’t lived yet. You’ll call bass in from 5 states away with this bad boy! If you have the shoulders to hoist this rig all day, then you have the shoulders to carry the winning bag to the scales. It’s all about the turbulence peeps, it’s all about the turbulence.

BOATS UNLIMITED NC TEAM TOURNAMENT BASS TRAIL QUALIFIER #3 RESULTS – Saturday March 29, 2014

BOATS UNLIMITED NC TEAM TOURNAMENT BASS TRAIL QUALIFIER #3 RESULTS
Saturday March 29, 2014 ~ Shearon Harris ~ Cross Point Landing Wildlife Ramp

329-141st
1st Place: Mark & Micheal Cummings of Pembroke…5 bass…22.08 lbs

329-14bf1stThe team of Chris & H.T. Eakins took 2nd with 5 bass weighing 20.59 lbs with

Big fish for the day

Even with a forecast of rough weather coming in, the Boats Unlimited NC Team Tournament Bass Trail
qualifier #3 at Shearon Harris went off without a hitch with 69 teams competing! It was about 54 degrees that
morning and around
68 that afternoon with very light winds. Water temps ranged from 50 to 55 depending on
the area fished
.We did have rain off an on but never a big downpour. The winds gusted a few times but were
light for most of the day. In other words, we got lucky even with a little fog trying to hold things up! Actually a
great day for fishing but evidently the front coming thru put a halt to a good bite!

Mark & Michael Cummings, of Pembroke, figured out enough strategy to catch 5 bass weighing 22.08 lbs.
T
he Cummings team won $1,280 for 1st, TWT 1st place of $1,155 and the Boats Unlimited NC 1st Place Bonus
of $750 for a grand total of $
3,185.

The team of Chris & H.T. Eakins took 2nd with 5 bass weighing 20.59 lbs winning $775. Big fish for the day
was a
huge 10.66 pounder caught by the team of Drew Johnson & Gill Young worth $966 and 2nd place big fish weighing 8.85 lbs. went to the team of Jesse & Josh Wise winning them $414.
110 fish were weighed in for a total of 352 pounds. Again the slot limit on bass at Harristook it’s toll on guys that caught many fish but were not able to weigh them in. This slot limit is not fair to anglers that practice and spend time and money to fish and get better. People that control the rules should at least give waivers to
tournament trails that
have a good ‘Catch and Release’ program. That’s just my 2 cents. We had numerous fish over 7 lbs. and all the fish looked healthy. Hot baits for the day were shakey heads, crankbaits and jerk baits.
I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail. The next Boats
Unlimited NC Team Tournament Bass Trail
tournament will be at Falls Lake on April 12th, out of Ledge Rock
Wildlife Ramp
. A Pig-Pickin’ for all participating anglers is planned for this event sponsored by ‘The PropDoc’ www.propdocnc.com  in Zebulon (919-632-9928) one of our newest sponsors!
All the information on our tournaments can be found at www.piedmontbassclassics.com

Power-Pole Sportsman II by: Terry Brown

Power-Pole Sportsman II

by: Terry Brown

There are two things that will make almost any bass angler cringe with disgust—scratching your boat against the dock while tying up and watching a huge bass dart away after spooking it with your trolling motor.

Fortunately, I’ve been using the Power-Pole Sportsman II for quite a while and it has totally eliminated both frustrations. Whether I’m deploying it to dock my boat, re-rig in the middle of a tournament or catch a spawning bass, I’ve been beyond impressed by its ease of use and functionality.

“Fishing among teen anglers is growing exponentially,” said Hank Weldon, Manager for B.A.S.S. for College, High School and Youth. “Based on Facebook® “fans,” state data and ongoing registrations, we expect the numbers of bass anglers aged 13-18 to easily triple by the end of the year, possibly even more,” he added.

“Adding Andy to our Pro Team gives us the opportunity to connect with high school anglers as they continue to grow and establish themselves as future pros,” said David Ittner,  Tournament and Pro Staff Manager, Yamaha Marine Group. “Andy’s enthusiasm and dedication for the sport caught our attention through his interactions with Yamaha on Facebook®. His fishing ability and maturity extend well beyond his years, and we are proud to support Andy’s dream of becoming a bass pro angler.”
