Farewell to Denny Brauer – Bassmaster.com – 5-7-1

Farewell to a

Nebraska Bricklayer

When the Elites kick off the this year at the Sabine River, Denny Brauer will also likely be in Texas, but at his new home in Del Rio rather than in the town of Orange. For the first time in over three decades, his Ranger will not be lined up with the other competitors’ boats on opening day. For the first time in that same time span, if there’s a solid flipping bite going on we can safely assume that there will be one more spot available in the final cut.

The tournament world will go on without Denny Brauer, just as it went on when Ken Cook left last year, just as it will go on when Rick Clunn finally decides that the travel is no longer for him. As every great athlete eventually learns, no one is bigger than the sport. Just when we thought no one would top Dr. J’s exploits, we were introduced to a tongue-wagging dunker named Jordan. No sooner was the ink dry on Jordan’s “greatest ever” plaque than along came LeBron. Indeed, we are all witnesses to the fact that “greatest ever” really means “greatest so far.”

Brauer’s not being forced out. The day did not come when Denny couldn’t “rise above the rim.” He won an Elite Series event as recently as 2011, and while he wasn’t necessarily the same world-beater he was in the 80s and 90s, and while he failed to make a top twelve cut in 2012, he’d still made it to Sunday in Elite Series competition eight times in the prior four years.

The Bassmaster Classic appearances may have been bunched more tightly together in the early days, too, but he’d been to two of the last three.

Bethel dominates in record-setting fashion – Bassmaster.com – 1-5-13

Bethel University's Zach Parker and Matthew Roberts

Bringing in the two heaviest bags of the event, Bethel set the All-Time One-Day and Two-Day Heavyweight records at 29-2 and 54-3 respectively for the Carhartt College Series.

TAVARES, Fla. — Bethel’s Zach Parker and Matthew Roberts brought in 25-1 on Day Two to dominate the competition by a 9-9 margin of victory in the Carhartt College Series Southern Regional on the Harris Chain.

Bringing in the two heaviest bags of the event, Bethel set the All-Time One-Day and Two-Day Heavyweight records at 29-2 and 54-3 respectively for the Carhartt College Series. Their Day One kicker of 9-11 briefly held the All-Time Big Bass record until it was broken by the event’s Carhartt Big Bass, weighing 10-7 and caught by Cody Spears of FSU on Day Two.

The Southern Regional on Harris Chain was earmarked as the tournament where records would be broken. Harris Chain and the 79-boat field did not disappoint.

Lake Anna Fishing Report – January 2013

  9lbs+1oz

January kicks off the start of the Outdoor Show Season. With Old man Winter knocking on the door, many folks will not be on the water. They will be looking for things to do indoors.

The first show of the season is the Richmond Fishing Expo
Jan 25-27 at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell Va. Dave Fauntleroy and I will be there with a Fish Tales/Anna Point Marina booth. We will have the new Lew’s BB1 series of casting reels to go along with a many of other items. Stop by and say hello!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bass- The bass have finally moved into a full blown winter pattern. The water temps have been dropping and the fish getting less aggressive. Main lake points that have a steep drop to them are going to hold fish. Look for fish to be in 10-25 feet of water. On sunny days, they could pull up to the shallows looking for an easy meal and warmer water by the afternoon. My favorite area is between the splits and Sturgeon Creek. Suspending Jerkbaits are a great way of catching these sluggish fish. Long casts and a slow twitch- twitch-pause retrieve. (WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE FISHING SLOW ENOUGH, SLOW DOWN EVEN MORE)

Shad imitations like Sassy Shads and my favorite, Sea Shads, rigged  on 1/4-1/2 oz jig heads slowly bounced on the bottom can entice large fish to eat when they are not active. This is aloso the time of year for MULTI ARM RIGS fished around bait balls to produce big bags of fish. Pig & Jig combinations dragged along the bottom at a snails pace can make the largest fish in the lake bite.

Slow rolling big spinner baits will also produce fish on the same main lake points. Big, meaning 3/4oz and larger with a single willow leaf blade. This is also the time of year when vertical jigging can produce numbers of fish. If you find a school onyour depth finder, try dropping a 1oz Hammered Tooth Ache Spoon or a River Side Ripper to them.

Striper- The most sought out winter time fish are going to be in the mid lake region for most of the month. The warm fall kept them in the rivers for longer than usual. Start looking for them around the 208 bridge up to the splits. Look for diving birds to give away possible locations of feeding fish. Casting is my favorite way to catch them, use a 1/4-1/2oz jig head rigged with a Bass Assassin Sea Shad or a 4″ Sassy Shad. A slow steady retrieve is the best. Sometimes they want a bait with little to no action. A Zoom Super Fluke Jr or Original 4″ Fluke are the tools for this.

Vertical jigging will also work if you locate a school of fish feeding on bait in deeper water. Tooth Ache Spoons, Silver Buddy’s and River Side Rippers will catch everything that swims in the lake. Live bait will also work great, if you can’t get out and catch your own bait, store bought Jumbo Shiners will get the job done.

Crappie- The specks are around just about every bridge piling on every bridge around the lake. Small minnows on either a slip bobber rig or a jig head will produce best. If you are wanting to fish with artificial, baits with little to no action will work best.Bass Assassin Tiny Assassin and Leeland Lures Crappie Magnets are great choices.

Lake Level- Full Pool

Water Temps
Dike 3- 52
Down Lake- 47-50
Mid Lake-  45-48
Up Lake-  40-44

Bomber signs Lee brothers – Bassmaster.com 12-26-12

Bomber signs Lee brothers

Matt and Jordan Lee are now Bomber pro staffers

Matt and Jordan Lee

B.A.S.S.

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Matt and Jordan Lee, the Auburn University brothers who advanced to the Carhartt College Series Bassmaster Classic Finals Bracket to fish against each other for a spot in the Bassmaster Classic, have signed to fish for Bomber Lures. Matt won that event and will fish the Classic at Oklahoma’s Grand Lake in February; Jordan is currently ranked as the No. 1 College Angler according to Bass Rankings.

In addition to Bomber Lures, Matt and Jordan also will represent Booyah Bait Company, YUM Soft Plastics, Heddon Lures and Smithwick.

“The Good Lord has blessed me with some incredible days on the water over the past year, and I am so grateful,” Matt said. “Winning the College Bracket has, of course, earned me a chance to fish in the Classic, but also has opened many doors in the fishing industry. Now, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with some of the biggest and most-used brands in our industry.”

Jordan Lee became the top-ranked college angler by winning or placing near the top in several prestigious tournaments, including a win at the 2012 FLW College Fishing tournament at South Carolina’s Lake Wylie. He also won a BFL tournament at Lake Guntersville during the past year. Jordan is a strong competitor in college and professional fishing despite the demands of completing his senior year at Auburn.

“These two men are super competitors, but what may be more important is that Jordan and Matt also are principled and honorable individuals,” said Melinda Hays, pro-staff coordinator for Bomber Lures. “We are so happy to have them on our team. Matt and Jordan have shown they have the character we demand from our pro staff, and they both are fantastic anglers. They are strong competitors we believe will be a real force in professional fishing for years to come.”

The two brothers fished as partners in the Bassmaster College Classic and finished second to the Oklahoma State University team. The top four teams in that event, however, then competed head-to-head with the winner qualifying to fish the Classic. The finals featured Matt versus Jordan, resulting in an emotional final weigh-in for the entire Lee family.

“It was a great experience fishing against Matt for a shot at the Classic,” Jordan said. “I admit I was a little bitter to know I was that close to my dream coming true, but I am excited and happy for him. He’s not satisfied with just making it there, so look for a strong finish — he definitely has the skills to do it.”
